Abstract:
We study the average $p-$Wasserstein distance between a finite sample of an infinite hyperuniform point process on $\mathbb{R}^2$ and its mean for any $p\geq 1$. The average Wasserstein transport cost is shown to be bounded from above and from below by some multiples of the number of points. More generally, we give a control on the $p-$Wasserstein distance in function of a control on the $L^p$ nor…

In image denoising problems, the increasing density of available images makes an exhaustive visual inspection impossible and therefore automated methods based on machine-learning must be deployed for this purpose. This is particulary the case in seismic signal processing. Engineers/geophysicists have to deal with millions of seismic time series. Finding the sub-surface properties useful for the oil industry may take up to a year and is very costly in terms of computing/human resources. In particular, the data must go through different steps of noise attenuation. Each denoise step is then ideally followed by a quality control (QC) stage performed by means of human expertise. To learn a quality control classifier in a supervised manner, labeled training data must be available, but collecting the labels from human experts is extremely time-consuming. We therefore propose a novel active learning methodology to sequentially select the most relevant data, which are then given back to a human expert for labeling. Beyond the application in geophysics, the technique we promote in this paper, based on estimates of the local error and its uncertainty, is generic. Its performance is supported by strong empirical evidence, as illustrated by the numerical experiments presented in this article, where it is compared to alternative active learning strategies both on synthetic and real seismic datasets.

This work concerns weakly confined particle systems in the plane, characterized by a large number of outliers away from a droplet where the bulk of the particles accumulate in the many-particle limit. We are interested in the asymptotic behavior of outliers for two classes of point processes: Coulomb gases at determinantal inverse temperature confined by a regular background, and a class of random polynomials.
We observe that the limiting outlier process only depends on the shape of the uncharged region containing them, and the global net excess charge. In particular, for a determinantal Coulomb gas confined by a sufficiently regular background measure, the outliers in a simply connected uncharged region converge to the corresponding Bergman point process. For a finitely connected uncharged region $Ω$, a family of limiting outlier processes arises, indexed by the (Pontryagin) dual of the fundamental group of $Ω$. Moreover, the outliers in different uncharged regions are asymptotically independent, even if the regions have common boundary points. The latter result is a manifestation of screening properties of the particle system.

We study the outliers for two models which have an interesting connection. On the one hand, we study a specific class of planar Coulomb gases which are determinantal. It corresponds to the case where the confining potential is the logarithmic potential of a radial probability measure. On the other hand, we study the zeros of random polynomials that appear to be closely related to the first model. Their behavior far from the origin is shown to depend only on the decaying properties of the probability measure generating the potential. A similar feature is observed for their behavior near the origin. Furthermore, in some cases, the appearance of outliers is observed, and the zeros of random polynomials and the Coulomb gases are seen to exhibit exactly the same behavior, which is related to the unweighted Bergman kernel.

We prove that the largest and smallest root in modulus of random Kac polynomials have a non-universal behavior. They do not converge towards the edge of the support of the limiting distribution of the zeros. This non-universality is surprising as the large deviation principle for the empirical measure is universal. This is in sharp contrast with random matrix theory where the large deviation principle is non-universal but the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue are universal. We show that the modulus of the largest zero is heavy tailed, with a number of finite moments bounded from above by the behavior at the origin of the distribution of the coefficients. We also prove that the random process of the roots of modulus smaller than one converges towards a limit point process. Finally, in the case of complex Gaussian coefficients, we use the work of Peres and Vir{á}g [PV05] to obtain explicit formulas for the limiting objects.

Abstract:
We prove the universality of the large deviations principle for the empirical measures of zeros of random polynomials whose coefficients are i.i.d. random variables possessing a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure on C, R or R + , under the assumption that the density does not vanish too fast at zero and decays at least as exp --|x| $ρ$ , $ρ$ \textgreater{} 0, at infinity.

Large deviations for the empirical measure of random polynomials: revisit of the Zeitouni-Zelditch theorem
Authors:
Raphael Butez
Abstract:
This article revisits the work by Ofer Zeitouni and Steve Zelditch on large deviations for the empirical measures of random orthogonal polynomials with i.i.d. Gaussian complex coefficients, and extends this result to real Gaussian coefficients. This article does not require any knowledge in geometry. For clarity, we focus on two classical cases: Kac polynomials and elliptic polynomials.
