We studied the isotropic Compton profile of the prototypical oxide VO$_2$ across the temperature induced electronic and structural phase transition at T$_C$ $\approx$ 340 K. We show that the phase transition leaves an observable signal, which facilitates Compton scattering studies of electronic structure and phase transitions in complex solids in powder form. We compare the experimental results with density functional theory calculations and find agreement in the shape of the difference profile, although the amplitude of the observed features is overestimated. The origin of the disagreement is discussed and we argue that it mainly originates mostly correlation effects beyond our current calculations and possibly to some extent, from thermal motion.

Abstract:
We use electron momentum density in ice as a tool to quantify order-disorder transitions by comparing Compton profiles differences of ice VI, VII, VIII and XII with respect to ice Ih. Quantitative agreement is found between theory and experiment for ice VIII, which is the most ordered phase. Robust signatures of the oxygen disorder are identified in the momentum density for the VIII-VII ice phase…

We use electron momentum density in ice as a tool to quantify order-disorder transitions by comparing Compton profiles differences of ice VI, VII, VIII and XII with respect to ice Ih. Quantitative agreement is found between theory and experiment for ice VIII, which is the most ordered phase. Robust signatures of the oxygen disorder are identified in the momentum density for the VIII-VII ice phase transition. The unique aspect of this work is the determination of the fraction n_e of electron directly involved in phase transitions as well as the use of position space signatures for quantifying oxygen site disorder.

Abstract:
In order to probe electron wave functions involved in the bonding of NH$_4$F, we have performed Compton scattering experiments in an oriented single crystal and in a powder. Ab initio calculations of the Compton profiles for NH$_4$F and NH$_4$Cl are used to enlighten the nature of the bonds in the NH$_4$F crystal. As a consequence, we are able to show significant charge transfer in the ammonium…

Ab initio calculations of the Compton profiles for NH$_4$F and NH$_4$Cl are used to enlighten the nature of the bonds in the NH$_4$F crystal. As a consequence, we are able to show significant charge transfer in the ammonium ion which is not observable using other methods. Our study provides a compelling proof for hydrogen bond formation in NH$_4$F.

The concept of a gamma-ray telescope based on a Laue lens offers the possibility to increase the sensitivity by more than an order of magnitude with respect to existing instruments. Laue lenses have been developed by our collaboration for several years : the main achievement of this R&D program was the CLAIRE lens prototype. Since then, the endeavour has been oriented towards the development of efficient diffracting elements (crystal slabs), the aim being to step from a technological Laue lens to a scientifically exploitable lens. The latest mission concept featuring a gamma-ray lens is the European Gamma-Ray Imager (GRI) which intends to make use of the Laue lens to cover energies from 200 keV to 1300 keV.
Investigations of two promising materials, low mosaicity copper and gradient concentration silicon-germanium are presented in this paper. The measurements have been performed during three runs on beamline ID15A of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and on the GAMS 4 instrument of the Institute Laue-Langevin (both in Grenoble, France) using highly monochromatic beam of energy close to 500 keV. Despite it was not perfectly homogeneous, the presented copper crystal exhibits peak reflectivity of 25% in accordance with theoretical predictions, and a mosaicity around 26 arcsec, the ideal range for the realization of a Laue lens such as GRI. Silicon-germanium featuring a constant gradient have been measured for the very first time at 500 keV. Two samples showed a quite homogeneous reflectivity reaching 26%, which is far from the 48% already observed in experimental crystals but a very encouraging beginning. This results have been used to estimate the performance of the GRI Laue lens design.

A direct measure of hydrogen bonding in water under conditions ranging from the normal state to the supercritical regime is derived from the Compton scattering of inelastically-scattered X-rays. First, we show that a measure of the number of electrons $n_e$ involved in hydrogen bonding at varying thermodynamic conditions can be directly obtained from Compton profile differences. Then, we use first-principles simulations to provide a connection between $n_e$ and the number of hydrogen bonds $n_{HB}$. Our study shows that over the broad range studied the relationship between $n_e$ and $n_{HB}$ is linear, allowing for a direct experimental measure of bonding and coordination in water. In particular, the transition to supercritical state is characterized by a sharp increase in the number of water monomers, but also displays a significant number of residual dimers and trimers.

The (mostly) insulating behaviour of PrBa2Cu3O7-d is still unexplained and even more interesting since the occasional appearance of superconductivity in this material. Since YBa2Cu3O7-d is nominally iso-structural and always superconducting, we have measured the electron momentum density in these materials. We find that they differ in a striking way, the wavefunction coherence length in PrBa2Cu3O7-d being strongly suppressed. We conclude that Pr on Ba-site substitution disorder is responsible for the metal-insulator transition. Preliminary efforts at growth with a method to prevent disorder yield 90K superconducting PrBa2Cu3O7-d crystallites.
