7Li NMR spectra were measured in a magnetic field up to 17 T at temperatures 5-30 K on single crystalline LiCu2O2. Earlier reported anomalies on magnetization curves correspond to magnetic field values where we observe changes of the NMR spectral shape. For the interpretation of the field and temperature evolutions of our NMR spectra, the magnetic structures were analyzed in the frame of the phenomenological theoretical approach of the Dzyaloshinskii-Landau theory. A set of possible planar and collinear structures was obtained. Most of these structures have an unusual configuration; they are characterized by a two-component order parameter and their magnetic moments vary harmonically not only in direction, but also in size. From the modeling of the observed spectra, a possible scenario of magnetic structure transformations is obtained.

The observed anisotropies of the $g$ tensor and the ESR linewidth in untwinned single crystals result from the crystal-electric field and from local exchange geometries acting on the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions in the zigzag-ladder like structure of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. Supported by a microscopic analysis of the exchange paths involved, we show that both the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction provide the dominant spin-spin relaxation channels in this material.

The magnetic properties are similar to earlier findings demonstrating antiferromagnetic ordering below 25 K. Evidence of magnetoelastic coupling is observed in the thermal expansion along the c-direction; not only at the low temperature antiferromagnetic transitions, but an anomalous behavior of the thermal expansion indicate magnetoelastic coupling also to the magnetic ordering related to a weak spontaneous magnetic moment appearing at 150 K. Ac-susceptibility measurements at different frequencies and superposed dc- fields are employed to further characterize this magnetic anomaly.

We report on an investigation of optical properties of multiferroic CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ at terahertz frequencies in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Below the ferrimagnetic transition (94 K), the terahertz response of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is dominated by a magnon mode, which shows a steep magnetic-field dependence. We ascribe this mode to an exchange resonance between two magnetic sublattices with different $g$-factors. In the framework of a simple two-sublattice model (the sublattices are formed by Co$^{2+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions), we find the inter-sublattice coupling constant, $λ= - (18 \pm 1)$ K, and trace the magnetization for each sublattice as a function of field. We show that the Curie temperature of the Cr$^{3+}$ sublattice, $Θ_{2}$ = $(49 \pm 2)$ K, coincides with the temperature range, where anomalies of the dielectric and magnetic properties of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have been reported in literature.

ESR spectra for all monophase samples (0<= x<0.12) can be explained within the model of a planar spin structure with a uniaxial type anisotropy. The NMR spectra of the highly doped single crystal sample Li(Cu0.9Zn0.1)2O2 can be described in the frame of a planar spin glass like magnetic structure with short range spiral correlations in the crystal (ab)-planes with strongest exchange bonds. The value of magnetic moments of Cu^2+ ions in this structure is close to value obtained for undoped crystals: (0.8 +- 0.1) mu_B.

LiCu_2O_2 single crystals were studied in the temperature range 300-1100 K by means of heating-cooling curves of differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray powder diffraction and electrical measurements. A reversible first-order phase transition between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was found to take place at 993 K. At the transition, a peak is observed in the DTA curves, as well as jumps of the unit cell parameters and electrical resistivity. Considering the crystal structure of LiCu_2O_2 and the entropy change associated with the phase transition, it is concluded that the phase transition is related to processes of order-disorder of the Cu2+ and Li+ cations onto their crystallographic positions.

Novel magnetic phase transitions were observed. A spin flop transition of the spiral spin plane was observed for the field orientations H||a,b. The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.

Layered ferromagnetic-piezoelectric composites show mechanical strain mediated electromagnetic coupling. Here we discuss dielectric and piezoelectric properties of ferrite-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and lanthanum manganite-PZT samples. Results of our investigations on dielectric and pyroelectric properties of multilayer ferromagnetic-piezoelectric are presented here. Lead zircinate-titanate PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) was used for the piezoelectric phase in all the structures. The following materials were used for the ferromagnetic component: nickel-zinc ferrites Ni0.9Zn 0.1Fe2O4 (NFO1) and Ni0.8Zn0.2Fe2O4 (NFO2), cobalt ferrite (CFO), lithium ferrite (LFO), lanthanum strontium manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSM), and lanthanum-calcium manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCM). The pyroelectric effect was studied by measuring the current J flowing through a closed loop containing the sample and an electrometer as the sample temperature T was slowly varied at the rate 0.1 K/s. Polarized PZT layers generate a pyroelectric current as the temperature changes. The main indicator of pyroelectric nature of the current is the sign reversal when the thermal cycle is switched from heating to cooling. Almost all of the multilayer structures showed a pyroelectric current, but the pyroelectric coefficient varied in a wide range. (i) For NFO1-PZT system the coefficient was in the range 0.01 - 10 nC/(cm2 K), depending on the temperature. (ii) CFO-PZT and LFO-PZT structures showed a large thermal current and a weak pyroelectric effect. (iii) Thermal currents, however, were absent in LCM-PZT within the temperature range from the room temperature to 400 K. (iv) In LSM-PZT, the thermal current exceeded the pyroelectric current. A model is proposed for an understanding of these results.

Below T about 24 K the NMR lineshape presents a clear signature of incommensurate (IC) static modulation of the local magnetic field consistent with an IC spiral modulation of the magnetic moments. {7}Li NMR reveals strong phason-like dynamical fluctuations extending well below 24 K. We hypothesize that a series of phase transitions at 24.2, 22.5, and 9 K reflects a "Devil's staircase" type behavior generic for IC systems. LDA based calculations of exchange integrals reveal a large in-chain frustration leading to a magnetical spiral.

The resistivity and dielectric constants are smaller than expected values. The magnetoelectric effect (ME) is stronger in ferrite-PZT than in manganite-PZT. The ME voltage coefficient aE at room temperature is the highest in NFO-PZT and the smallest for LCMO-PZT. The transverse ME effect is an order of magnitude stronger than the longitudinal effect. The magnitude of aE correlates well with magnetic permeability for the ferrites.

Optical properties of single-crystal monoclinic CuO in the range 70 - 6000 \cm were studied at temperatures from 7 to 300 K. Normal reflection spectra were obtained from the (001) and (010) crystal faces thus giving for the first time separate data for the $A_{u}$ and $B_{u}$ phonon modes excited in the purely transverse way (TO modes). Mode parameters, including polarizations of the $B_{u}$ modes not determined by the crystal symmetry, were extracted by the dispersion analysis of reflectivity curves as a function of temperature. Spectra of all the components of the optical conductivity tensor were obtained using the Kramers-Kronig method recently extended to the case of the low-symmetry crystals. The number of strong phonon modes is in agreement with the factor-group analysis for the crystal structure, currently accepted for the CuO. However, several "extra" modes of minor intensity are detected. Comparison of frequencies of "extra" modes with the available phonon dispersion curves points to possible "diagonal" doubling of the unit cell \{{\bf a}, {\bf b}, {\bf c}\} $\to$ \{{\bf a}+{\bf c}, {\bf b}, {\bf a}-{\bf c}\} and formation of the superlattice. The previously reported softening of the $A^{3}_{u}$ mode ($\sim$ 400 \cm) with cooling at $T_{N}$ is found to be $\sim$ 10 % for the TO mode. The mode is very broad at high temperatures and strongly narrows in the AFM phase. We attribute this effect to strong resonance coupling of this mode to optical or acoustic bi-magnons and reconstruction of the magnetic excitations spectrum at the Néel point. A significant anisotropy of $ε^{\infty}$ is observed: it was found to be 5.9 along the {\bf b}-axis, 6.2 along the {[}101{]} chains and 7.8 the {[}10$\bar{1}${]} chains. The "transverse" effective charge is value is about 2 electrons.
