Abstract:
Entanglement generation in trapped-ion systems has relied thus far on two distinct but related geometric phase gate techniques: Molmer-Sorensen and light-shift gates. We recently proposed a variant of the light-shift scheme where the qubit levels are separated by an optical frequency [B. C. Sawyer and K. R. Brown, Phys. Rev. A 103, 022427 (2021)]. Here we report an experimental demonstration of this entangling gate using a pair of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions in a cryogenic surface-electrode ion trap and a commercial, high-power, 532 nm Nd:YAG laser. Generating a Bell state in 35 $μ$s, we directly measure an infidelity of $6(3) \times 10^{-4}$ without subtraction of experimental errors. The 532 nm gate laser wavelength suppresses intrinsic photon scattering error to $\sim 1 \times 10^{-5}$.

Abstract:
The Robust Phase Estimation (RPE) protocol was designed to be an efficient and robust way to calibrate quantum operations. The robustness of RPE refers to its ability to estimate a single parameter, usually gate amplitude, even when other parameters are poorly calibrated or when the gate experiences significant errors. Here we demonstrate the robustness of RPE to errors that affect initialization,…

Here we demonstrate the robustness of RPE to errors that affect initialization, measurement, and gates. In each case, the error threshold at which RPE begins to fail matches quantitatively with theoretical bounds. We conclude that RPE is an effective and reliable tool for calibration of one-qubit rotations and that it is particularly useful for automated calibration routines and sensor tasks.

We control the relative coupling strength of carrier and first order motional sideband interactions of a trapped ion by placing it in a resonant optical standing wave. Our configuration uses the surface of a microfabricated chip trap as a mirror, avoiding technical challenges of in-vacuum optical cavities. Displacing the ion along the standing wave, we show a periodic suppression of the carrier and sideband transitions with the cycles for the two cases $180^\circ$ out of phase with each other. This technique allows for suppression of off-resonant carrier excitations when addressing the motional sidebands, with applications in quantum simulation and quantum control. Using the standing wave fringes, we measure the relative ion height as a function of applied electric field, allowing for a precise measurement of ion displacement and, combined with measured micromotion amplitudes, a validation of trap numerical models.
