We unravel the coupled dipole dynamics of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interspecies interaction. We produce a degenerate mixture of $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb in an optical trap and we study the dipole oscillations of both atomic species in the linear response regime. Varying the interspecies interaction from the weakly to the strongly attractive side, we measure the frequencies and the composition of the two dipole eigenmodes. For enough strong interactions, even beyond the mean-field collapse, we find that the frequency of the low-energy eigenmode is determined only by the bare trap frequencies and the species population imbalance. The experimental results are well reproduced by numerical simulations based on two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our findings provide a detailed picture of the dipole excitations in asymmetric bosonic mixtures.

We experimentally demonstrate a multi-mode interferometer comprising a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{39}$K atoms trapped in a harmonic potential, where the interatomic interaction can be cancelled exploiting Feshbach resonances. Kapitza-Dirac diffraction from an optical lattice coherently splits the BEC in multiple momentum components equally spaced that form different interferometric paths, closed by the trap** harmonic potential. We investigate two different interferometric schemes, where the recombination pulse is applied after a full or half oscillation in the confining potential. We find that the relative amplitudes of the momentum components at the interferometer output are sensitive to external forces, through the induced displacement of the harmonic potential with respect to the optical lattice. We show how to calibrate the interferometer, fully characterize its output and discuss perspective improvements.

Understanding the effect of interactions in the phase evolution of expanding atomic Bose Einstein condensates is fundamental to describe the basic phenomenon of matter wave interference. Many theoretical and experimental works tackled this problem, always with the implicit assumption that the mutual interaction between two expanding condensates rigidly modifies the phase evolution through an effective force. In this paper, we present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the interference profile of expanding $^{87}$Rb condensates, with a specific focus on the effect of interactions. We come to the different conclusion that the mutual interaction produces local modifications of the condensate phase only in the region where the wavepackets overlap.

The binary condensate is prepared in the ground state and confined in a pure optical trap. We exploit Feshbach resonances for tuning the value of $a_{12}$. After compensating the gravitational sag between the two species with a magnetic field gradient, we drive the mixture into the attractive regime. We let the system to evolve both in free space and in an optical waveguide. In both geometries, for strong attractive interactions, we observe the formation of self-bound states, recognizable as quantum droplets. Our findings prove that robust, long-lived droplet states can be realized in attractive two-species mixtures, despite the two atomic components may experience different potentials.

We consider a homogeneous heteronuclear Bose mixture with contact interactions at the mean-field collapse, i.e. with interspecies attraction equal to the mean geometrical intraspecies repulsion. We show that the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) energy functional is accurately approximated by an expression that has the same functional form as in the homonuclear case. The approximated energy functional is characterized by two exponents, which can be treated as fitting parameters. We demonstrate that the values of these parameters which preserve the invariance under permutation of the two atomic species are exactly those of the homonuclear case. Deviations from the exact expression of LHY energy functional are discussed quantitatively and a specific application is described.

We study the onset of dissipation in an atomic Josephson junction between Fermi superfluids in the molecular Bose-Einstein condensation limit of strong attraction. Our simulations identify the critical population imbalance and the maximum Josephson current delimiting dissipationless and dissipative transport, in quantitative agreement with recent experiments. We unambiguously link dissipation to vortex ring nucleation and dynamics, demonstrating that quantum phase slips are responsible for the observed resistive current. Our work directly connects microscopic features with macroscopic dissipative transport, providing a comprehensive description of vortex ring dynamics in three-dimensional inhomogeneous constricted superfluids at zero and finite temperatures.

Laser cooling based on dark states, i.e. states decoupled from light, has proven to be effective to increase the phase-space density of cold trapped atoms. Dark-states cooling requires open atomic transitions, in contrast to the ordinary laser cooling used for example in magneto-optical traps (MOTs), which operate on closed atomic transitions. For alkali atoms, dark-states cooling is therefore commonly operated on the $D_1$ transition $n S_{1/2}\rightarrow n P_{1/2}$. We show that, for $^{87}\text{Rb}$, thanks to the large hyperfine structure separations the use of this transition is not strictly necessary and that $"$quasi-dark state$"$ cooling is efficient also on the $D_2$ line, $5 S_{1/2}\rightarrow 5 P_{3/2}$. We report temperatures as low as $(4.0\pm 0.3)\,μ$K and an increase of almost an order of magnitude in the phase space density with respect to ordinary laser sub-Doppler cooling.

We study the emergence of dissipation in an atomic Josephson junction between weakly-coupled superfluid Fermi gases. We find that vortex-induced phase slippage is the dominant microscopic source of dissipation across the BEC-BCS crossover. We explore different dynamical regimes by tuning the bias chemical potential between the two superfluid reservoirs. For small excitations, we observe dissipation and phase coherence to coexist, with a resistive current followed by well-defined Josephson oscillations. We link the junction transport properties to the phase-slippage mechanism, finding that vortex nucleation is primarily responsible for the observed trends of conductance and critical current. For large excitations, we observe the irreversible loss of coherence between the two superfluids, and transport cannot be described only within an uncorrelated phase-slip picture. Our findings open new directions for investigating the interplay between dissipative and superfluid transport in strongly correlated Fermi systems, and general concepts in out-of-equlibrium quantum systems.

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to investigate a polarized spin-mixture of ultracold ${}^6$Li atoms close to a broad Feshbach scattering resonance. Focusing on the regime of strong repulsive interactions, we observe well-defined coherent quasiparticles even for unitarity-limited interactions. We characterize the many-body system by extracting the key properties of repulsive Fermi polarons: the energy $E_+$, the effective mass $m^*$, the residue $Z$ and the decay rate $Γ$. Above a critical interaction, $E_+$ is found to exceed the Fermi energy of the bath while $m^*$ diverges and even turns negative, thereby indicating that the repulsive Fermi liquid state becomes energetically and thermodynamically unstable.

A proper two-mode model in terms of the Bogoliubov functions is also discussed, revealing that in general a two-mode approach is formally justified only for not too large interactions, even in the limit of very small amplitude oscillations. Here we consider specifically the case of a one-dimensional system, but the results are expected to be valid in arbitrary dimensions.

Ferromagnetism is a manifestation of strong repulsive interactions between itinerant fermions in condensed matter. Whether short-ranged repulsion alone is sufficient to stabilize ferromagnetic correlations in the absence of other effects, like peculiar band dispersions or orbital couplings, is however unclear. Here, we investigate ferromagnetism in the minimal framework of an ultracold Fermi gas with short-range repulsive interactions tuned via a Feshbach resonance. While fermion pairing characterises the ground state, our experiments provide signatures suggestive of a metastable Stoner-like ferromagnetic phase supported by strong repulsion in excited scattering states. We probe the collective spin response of a two-spin mixture engineered in a magnetic domain-wall-like configuration, and reveal a substantial increase of spin susceptibility while approaching a critical repulsion strength. Beyond this value, we observe the emergence of a time-window of domain immiscibility, indicating the metastability of the initial ferromagnetic state. Our findings establish an important connection between dynamical and equilibrium properties of strongly-correlated Fermi gases, pointing to the existence of a ferromagnetic instability.

We report on the observation of the Josephson effect between two strongly interacting fermionic superfluids coupled through a thin tunneling barrier. We prove that the relative population and phase are canonically conjugate dynamical variables, coherently oscillating throughout the entire crossover from molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluids. We measure the plasma frequency and we extract the Josephson coupling energy, both exhibiting a non-monotonic behavior with a maximum near the crossover regime. We also observe the transition from coherent to dissipative dynamics, which we directly ascribe to the propagation of vortices through the superfluid bulk. Our results highlight the robust nature of resonant superfluids, opening the door to the study of the dynamics of superfluid Fermi systems in the presence of strong correlations and fluctuations.

The effects of visible and infrared light on potassium atoms embedded in a nanoporous glass matrix are investigated. Photodesorption by visible light enhances the atomic mobility and causes the formation of metallic nanoparticles. Two different populations of metastable clusters with absorption bands in the near-infrared and infrared are grown as a consequence of illumination. Atoms can move between the two groups through sequences of adsorption/desorption events at the pore surface. Irradiation with infrared light, instead, does not significantly enhance the atomic diffusion inside the pores. However, it induces relevant modifications of the substrate, thus changing its interaction with the assembled clusters. Consequently, infrared light alters the dynamics of the system, affecting also the evolution of non-resonant nanoparticles populations, even after the illumination sequence. These results provide new insights on the photo-induced modifications of the substrate-adsorbate interaction in nano-sized confined systems.

We observe growth of shape-controlled potassium nanoparticles inside a random network of glass nanopores, exposed to low-power laser radiation. Visible laser light plays a dual role: it increases the desorption probability of potassium atoms from the inner glass walls and induces the self-assembly of metastable metallic nanoparticles along the nanopores. By probing the sample transparency and the atomic light-induced desorption flux into the vapour phase, the dynamics of both cluster formation/evaporation and atomic photo-desorption processes are characterized. Results indicate that laser light not only increases the number of nanoparticles embedded in the glass matrix but also influences their structural properties. By properly choosing the laser frequency and the illumination time, we demonstrate that it is possible to tailor the nanoparticles'shape distribution. Furthermore, a deep connection between the macroscopic behaviour of atomic desorption and light-assisted cluster formation is observed. Our results suggest new perspectives for the study of atom/surface interaction as well as an effective tool for the light-controlled reversible growth of nanostructures.
