We show via an explicit construction how an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections generically leads to a resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity in any spacetime dimension $D \ge 5$. The theories we consider have two key properties that ensure the results are general and robust: (1) they provide a basis for (vacuum) gravitational effective field theory in five and higher-dimensions, (2) for each value of the mass, they have a unique static spherically symmetric solution. We present several exact solutions of the theories that include the Hayward black hole and metrics similar to the Bardeen and Dymnikova ones. Unlike previous constructions, these regular black holes arise as vacuum solutions, as we include no matter fields whatsoever in our analysis. We show how the black hole thermodynamics can be studied in a completely universal and unambiguous way for all solutions.

When quantum gravity effects are included, we argue that a new type of transition arises, giving rise to Kasner eons: periods which are dominated by emergent physics at each energy scale. We comment on the different ways in which the Einsteinian eon may come to an end and show explicitly how additional Kasner eons arise in the interior of a black hole solution due to higher-derivative corrections.

It has been shown that both the electron-transfer rate constant of an electrochemical reaction and the conductance quantum are correlated with the concept of quantum capacitance. This simple association between the two separate concepts has an entirely quantum rate basis that encompasses the electron-transfer rate theory as originally proposed by Rudolph A. Marcus whether the statistical mechanism is properly taken into account. Presently, it is conducted a concise review of the quantum mechanical rate theory principles focused on its relativistic quantum electrodynamics character to demonstrate that it can reconcile the conflicting views established on attempting to use the super-exchange (supported on electron transfer) or `metallic-like' (supported on conductance quantum) mechanisms separately to explain the highly efficient long-distance electron transport observed in the respiratory processes of living cells. The unresolved issues related to long-range electron transport are clarified in light of the quantum rate theory with a discussion focused on Geobacter sulfurreducens films as a reference standard of the respiration chain. Theoretical analyses supported by experimental data suggest that the efficiency of respiration within a long-range electron transport path is intrinsically a quantum mechanical event that follows relativistic quantum electrodynamics principles as addressed by quantum rate theory.

We present a top-down construction of a three-dimensional non-local theory of massive gravity. This "Non-Local Massive Gravity" (NLMG) is obtained as the gravitational theory induced by Einstein gravity on a brane inserted in Anti-de Sitter space modified by an overall minus sign. The theory involves an infinite series of increasingly complicated higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the quadratic term coinciding with New Massive Gravity. We obtain an analytic formula for the quadratic action of NLMG and show that its linearized spectrum consists of an infinite tower of positive-energy massive spin-2 modes. We compute the Newtonian potential and show that the introduction of the infinite series of terms makes it behave as $\sim 1/r$ at short distances, as opposed to the logarithmic behavior encountered when the series is truncated at any finite order. We use this and input from brane-world holography to argue that the theory may contain asymptotically flat black hole solutions.

While CLIP has excelled in zero-shot vision-language tasks, the resource-intensive nature of model training remains challenging. Many datasets lack linguistic diversity, featuring solely English descriptions for images. CAPIVARA addresses this by augmenting text data using image captioning and machine translation to generate multiple synthetic captions in low-resource languages. We optimize the training pipeline with LiT, LoRA, and gradient checkpointing to alleviate the computational cost. Through extensive experiments, CAPIVARA emerges as state of the art in zero-shot tasks involving images and Portuguese texts. We show the potential for significant improvements in other low-resource languages, achieved by fine-tuning the pre-trained multilingual CLIP using CAPIVARA on a single GPU for 2 hours. We study various aspects of higher-curvature theories of gravity built from contractions of the metric, the Riemann tensor and the covariant derivative, $\mathcal{L}(g^{ab},R_{abcd},\nabla_a)$. We characterise the linearized spectrum of these theories and compute the modified Newton potential in the general case. Then, we present the first examples of Generalized Quasi-topological (GQT) gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We argue that they always have second-order equations on maximally symmetric backgrounds. Focusing on four spacetime dimensions, we find new densities of that type involving eight and ten derivatives of the metric. In the latter case, we find new modifications of the Schwarzschild black hole. These display thermodynamic properties which depart from the ones of polynomial GQT black holes. In particular, the relation between the temperature and the mass of small black holes, $T\sim M^{1/3}$, which universally holds for general polynomial GQT modifications of Einstein gravity, gets modified in the presence of the new density with covariant derivatives to $T\sim M^{3}$. Finally, we consider brane-world gravities induced by Einstein gravity in the AdS bulk. We show that the effective quadratic action for the brane-world theory involving arbitrary high-order terms in the action can be written explicitly in a closed form in terms of Bessel functions. We use this result to compute the propagator of metric perturbations on the brane and its pole structure in various dimensions, always finding infinite towers of ghost modes, as well as tachyons and more exotic modes in some cases.

Quantum rate theory encompasses the electron-transfer rate constant concept of electrochemical reactions as a particular setting, besides demonstrating that the electrodynamics of these reactions obey relativistic quantum mechanical rules. The theory predicts a frequency $ν= E/h$ for electron-transfer reactions, in which $E = e^2/C_q$ is the energy associated with the density-of-states $C_q/e^2$ and $C_q$ is the quantum capacitance of the electrochemical junctions. This work demonstrates that the $ν= E/h$ frequency of the intermolecular charge transfer of push-pull heterocyclic compounds, assembled over conducting electrodes, follows the above-stated quantum rate electrodynamic principles. Astonishingly, the differences between the molecular junction electronics formed by push-pull molecules and the electrodynamics of electrochemical reactions observed in redox-active modified electrodes are solely owing to an adiabatic setting (strictly following Landauer's ballistic presumption) of the quantum conductance in the push-pull molecular junctions. An appropriate electrolyte field-effect screening environment accounts for the resonant quantum conductance dynamics of the molecule-bridge-electrode structure, in which the intermolecular charge transfer dynamics within the frontier molecular orbital of push-pull heterocyclic molecules follow relativistic quantum mechanics in agreement with the quantum rate theory.

Previously, this definition of $ν$ was successfully employed to define a quantum mechanical meaning for the electron-transfer (ET) rate constant of redox reactions, wherein faradaic electric currents involved with ET reactions were demonstrated to be governed by relativistic quantum electrodynamics at room temperature~\citep{Bueno-2023-3}. This study demonstrated that the definition of $ν$ entails the relativistic quantum electrodynamics phenomena intrinsically related to the perturbation of the density-of-states $\left( dn/dE \right) = C_q/e^2$ by an external harmonic oscillatory potential energy variation. On this basis, the electronic structure of graphene embedded in an electrolyte environment was computed. The electronic structure measured using quantum-rate spectroscopy (QRS) is in good agreement with that measured through angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy (ARPES) or calculated via computational density-functional theory (DFT) methods. Electrochemical QRS has evident experimental advantages over ARPES. For instance, QRS enables obtaining the electronic structure of graphene at room temperature and in an electrolyte environment, whereas ARPES requires low temperature and ultrahigh-vacuum conditions. Furthermore, QRS can operate \textit{in-situ} using a hand-held, inexpensive piece of equipment, whereas ARPES necessarily requires expensive and cumbersome apparatus.

The entanglement entropy of an arbitrary spacetime region $A$ in a three-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) contains a constant universal coefficient, $F(A)$. For general theories, the value of $F(A)$ is minimized when $A$ is a round disk, $F_0$, and in that case it coincides with the Euclidean free energy on the sphere. We conjecture that, for general CFTs, the quantity $F(A)/F_0$ is bounded above by the free scalar field result and below by the Maxwell field one. We provide strong evidence in favor of this claim and argue that an analogous conjecture in the four-dimensional case is equivalent to the Hofman-Maldacena bounds. In three dimensions, our conjecture gives rise to similar bounds on the quotients of various constants characterizing the CFT. In particular, it implies that the quotient of the stress-tensor two-point function coefficient and the sphere free energy satisfies $C_{ \scriptscriptstyle T} / F_0 \leq 3/ (4π^2 \log 2 - 6ζ[3]) \simeq 0.14887$ for general CFTs. We verify the validity of this bound for free scalars and fermions, general $O(N)$ and Gross-Neveu models, holographic theories, $\mathcal{N}=2$ Wess-Zumino models and general ABJM theories.

For a single state mode of transmittance, $e^2/C_q$ corresponds to the chemical potential differences $Δμ$ between donor and acceptor state levels comprising an electrochemical reaction. The latter assumption implies quantum electrodynamics within a particular quantum transport mode intrinsically coupled to the electron-transfer rate of electrochemical reactions that have not been considered thus far. Here it is demonstrated that the consideration of this inherent quantum transport is key to obtaining an in-depth understanding of the electron transfer phenomenon. Finally, the theory is validated through its description of electron transfer, quantum conductance, and capacitance in different electro-active molecular films.

We construct generalized symmetries for linearized Einstein gravity in arbitrary dimensions. First-principle considerations in QFT force generalized symmetries to appear in dual pairs. Verifying this prediction helps us find the full set of non-trivial conserved charges -- associated, in equal parts, with 2-form and $(D-2)$-form currents. Their total number is $D(D+1)$. We compute the quantum commutators of pairs of dual charges, showing that they are non-vanishing for regions whose boundaries are non-trivially linked with each other and zero otherwise, as expected on general grounds. We also consider general linearized higher-curvature gravities. These propagate, in addition to the usual graviton, a spin-0 mode as well as a massive ghost-like spin-2 one. When the latter is absent, the theory is unitary and the dual-pairs principle is respected. In particular, we find that the number and types of charges remain the same as for Einstein gravity, and that they correspond to continuous generalizations of the Einsteinian ones.

Supposing that $α(p) + β(p) = p$, $\forall\, p \in \left(\frac{N}{s},\infty\right)$ and $\displaystyle\lim_{p \to \infty} α(p)/{p} = θ\in (0,1)$, we consider two systems for the fractional $p$-Laplacian and a variation on the first system. The first system is the following. $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ_p)^{s}u(x) = λα(p) \vert u \vert^{α(p)-2} u \vert v(x_0)\vert^{β(p)} & {\rm in} \ \ Ω,\\ (-Δ_p)^{t}v(x) = λβ(p) \left(\displaystyle\int_Ω\vert u \vert^{α(p)} d x\right) \vert v(x_0) \vert^{β(p)-2} v(x_0) δ_{x_0} & {\rm in} \ \ Ω,\\ u= v=0 & {\rm in} \ \mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ, \end{array}\right. $$ where $x_0$ is a point in $\overlineΩ$, $λ$ is a parameter, $0<s\leq t<1$, $δ_x$ denotes the Dirac delta distribution centered at $x$ and $p>N/s$. A variation on this system is obtained by considering $x_0$ to be a point where the function $v$ attains its maximum.
The second one is the system $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ_p)^{s}u(x) = λα(p) \vert u(x_1) \vert^{α(p)-2} u(x_1) \vert v(x_2) \vert^{β(p)} δ_{x_1} & {\rm in} \ \ Ω,\\ (-Δ_p)^{t}v(x) = λβ(p) \vert u(x_1) \vert^{α(p)} \vert v(x_2) \vert^{β(p)-2} v(x_2) δ_{x_2} & {\rm in} \ \ Ω,\\ u= v=0 & {\rm in} \ \mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ, \end{array}\right. $$ where $x_1,x_2\in Ω$ are arbitrary, $x_1\neq x_2$. Although we not consider here, a variation similar to that on the first system can be solved by practically the same method we apply.
We obtain solutions for the systems (including the variation on the first system) and consider the asymptotic behavior of these solutions as $p\to\infty$. We prove that they converge, in the viscosity sense, to solutions of problems on $u$ and $v$.

Accordingly, simple and faster experimental methods that permit to resolve the electronic density of states of these nanoscale materials (of which quantum dots are a particular example) are of great importance for the development of man-made nanoscale interfaces and nanoelectronics. In the present work, we propose the quantum rate spectroscopy methodology (and introduce the fundamental physical basis of this technique) as a tool for resolving the electronic structure of zero-dimensional (quantum dot) structures at room temperature and environmental pressure conditions. This method is simpler than the traditional methods based on scanning tunneling microscopy. Based on this quantum electromagnetic rate approach, here it is demonstrated that the intrinsic massless character that complies with Dirac quantum electrodynamics of the electron in its ground-state energy level is a consequence of a quantum electromagnetic phase coherence between $τ_C$ and $τ_L$ time constants of the oscillatory motion. The quantum mechanical uncertainties associated with $h$ are interpreted to be a consequence of perturbing the inherent electromagnetic phase coherence of the ground state with the loss of half of a byte of electromagnetic information per ``experimental'' perturbation, with the fine-structure constant $α= \sqrt{π/ 2 \left( τ_L / τ_C \right)} \sim 1/137$ playing a prominent role in the phenomenon.

In this work, it is demonstrated that there is an additional origin of the electric potential energy of an electron orbiting a nuclei that can be, alternatively to that associated to the elementary `static' charge of the electron as introduced by Bohr, formulated in terms of an electromotive force associated with the closed motion of the electron around the nuclei. This permitted the resolution of the Maxwellian laws of classical electrodynamics within electric $1/τ_C$ and magnetic $1/τ_L$ quantum rate settings for describing the time-dependent oscillatory dynamics of the electron in the ground state, conducting to a reinterpretation of the meaning of $h$ in quantum mechanics. Notably, the quantum electromagnetic rate reinterpretation of the ground state electrodynamics, as introduced in this work, is not only in compliance with Maxwellian laws, but also conforms with the relativistic quantum electrodynamics as proposed by Dirac; hence, it exhibits an inherent massless character of the electron that fulfils both relativistic quantum dynamics and Maxwellian laws of classical electrodynamics.

The construction of Quasi-topological gravities in three-dimensions requires coupling a scalar field to the metric. As shown in arXiv:2104.10172, the resulting "Electromagnetic" Quasi-topological (EQT) theories admit charged black hole solutions characterized by a single-function for the metric, $-g_{tt}=g^{-1}_{rr}\equiv f(r)$, and a simple azimuthal form for the scalar. Such black holes, whose metric can be determined fully analytically, generalize the BTZ solution in various ways, including singularity-free black holes without any fine-tuning of couplings or parameters. In this paper we extend the family of EQT theories to general curvature orders. We show that, beyond linear order, $f(r)$ satisfies a second-order differential equation rather than an algebraic one, making the corresponding theories belong to the Electromagnetic Generalized Quasi-topological (EGQT) class. We prove that at each curvature order, the most general EGQT density is given by a single term which contributes nontrivially to the equation of $f(r)$ plus densities which do not contribute at all to such equation. The proof relies on the counting of the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities of the form $\mathcal{L}(R_{ab},\partial_a φ)$, which we carry out. We study some general aspects of the new families of EGQT black-hole solutions, including their thermodynamic properties and the fulfillment of the first law, and explicitly construct a few of them numerically.

We present several new results for the $N$-partite information, $I_N$, of spatial regions in the ground state of $d$-dimensional conformal field theories. First, we show that $I_N$ can be written in terms of a single $N$-point function of twist operators. Using this, we argue that in the limit in which all mutual separations are much greater than the regions sizes, the $N$-partite information scales as $I_N \sim r^{-2NΔ}$, where $r$ is the typical distance between pairs of regions and $Δ$ is the lowest primary scaling dimension. In the case of spherical entangling surfaces, we obtain a completely explicit formula for the $I_4$ in terms of 2-, 3- and 4-point functions of the lowest-dimensional primary. Then, we consider a three-dimensional scalar field in the lattice. We verify the predicted long-distance scaling and provide strong evidence that $I_N$ is always positive for general regions and arbitrary $N$ for that theory. For the $I_4$, we find excellent numerical agreement between our general formula and the lattice result for disk regions. We also perform lattice calculations of the mutual information for more general regions and general separations both for a free scalar and a free fermion, and conjecture that, normalized by the corresponding disk entanglement entropy coefficients, the scalar result is always greater than the fermion one. Comparing different AutoML frameworks is notoriously challenging and often done incorrectly. We introduce an open and extensible benchmark that follows best practices and avoids common mistakes when comparing AutoML frameworks. We conduct a thorough comparison of 9 well-known AutoML frameworks across 71 classification and 33 regression tasks. The differences between the AutoML frameworks are explored with a multi-faceted analysis, evaluating model accuracy, its trade-offs with inference time, and framework failures. We also use Bradley-Terry trees to discover subsets of tasks where the relative AutoML framework rankings differ. The benchmark comes with an open-source tool that integrates with many AutoML frameworks and automates the empirical evaluation process end-to-end: from framework installation and resource allocation to in-depth evaluation. The benchmark uses public data sets, can be easily extended with other AutoML frameworks and tasks, and has a website with up-to-date results.

We study the structure of the higher-curvature gravitational densities that are induced from holographic renormalization in AdS$_{d+1}$. In a braneworld construction, such densities define a d-dimensional higher-curvature gravitational theory on the brane, which in turn is dual to a (d-1)-dimensional CFT living at its boundary. We show that this CFT$_{d-1}$ satisfies a holographic c-theorem in general dimensions (different than the g-theorem of holographic boundary CFTs), since at each and every order the higher-curvature densities satisfy c-theorems on their own. We find that, in these densities, the terms that affect the monotonicity of the holographic c-function are algebraic in the curvature, and do not involve covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We examine various other features of the holographically induced higher-curvature densities, such as the presence of reduced-order traced equations, and their connection to Born-Infeld-type gravitational Lagrangians.

Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQTGs) are higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity in $D$-dimensions. Their defining properties include possessing second-order linearized equations of motion around maximally symmetric backgrounds as well as non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's black hole characterized by a single function, $f(r)\equiv - g_{tt}=g_{rr}^{-1}$, which satisfies a second-order differential equation. In arXiv:1909.07983 GQTGs were shown to exist at all orders in curvature and for general $D$. In this paper we prove that, in fact, $n-1$ inequivalent classes of order-$n$ GQTGs exist for $D\geq 5$. Amongst these, we show that one -- and only one -- type of densities is of the Quasi-topological kind, namely, such that the equation for $f(r)$ is algebraic. Our arguments do not work for $D=4$, in which case there seems to be a single unique GQT density at each order which is not of the Quasi-topological kind. We compute the thermodynamic charges of the most general $D$-dimensional order-$n$ GQTG, verify that they satisfy the first law and provide evidence that they can be entirely written in terms of the embedding function which determines the maximally symmetric vacua of the theory.

Rényi entropies, $S_n$, admit a natural generalization in the presence of global symmetries. These "charged Rényi entropies" are functions of the chemical potential $μ$ conjugate to the charge contained in the entangling region and reduce to the usual notions as $μ\rightarrow 0$. For $n=1$, this provides a notion of charged entanglement entropy. In this letter we prove that for a general $d (\geq 3)$-dimensional CFT, the leading correction to the uncharged entanglement entropy across a spherical entangling surface is quadratic in the chemical potential, positive definite, and universally controlled (up to fixed $d$-dependent constants) by the coefficients $C_J$ and $a_2$. These fully characterize, for a given theory, the current correlators $\langle JJ\rangle $ and $\langle TJJ \rangle$, as well as the energy flux measured at infinity produced by the insertion of the current operator. Our result is motivated by analytic holographic calculations for a special class of higher-curvature gravities coupled to a $(d-2)$-form in general dimensions as well as for free-fields in $d=4$. A proof for general theories and dimensions follows from previously known universal identities involving the magnetic response of twist operators introduced in arXiv:1310.4180 and basic thermodynamic relations.

We present new results involving general higher-curvature gravities in three dimensions. The most general Lagrangian can be written as a function of the Ricci scalar $R$, $\mathcal{S}_2\equiv \tilde R_{a}^b \tilde R_b^a$ and $\mathcal{S}_3\equiv \tilde R_a^b \tilde R_b^c \tilde R_c^a$ where $\tilde R_{ab}$ is the traceless part of the Ricci tensor. First, we provide a formula for the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities, $\#(n)$. This satisfies the identity $\#(n-6)=\#(n)-n$. Then, we show that, linearized around a general Einstein solution, a generic order-$n\geq 2$ density can be written as a linear combination of $R^n$, which does not propagate the generic massive graviton, plus a density which does not propagate the generic scalar mode, $R^n-12n(n-1)R^{n-2}\mathcal{S}_2$, plus $\#(n)-2$ densities which contribute trivially to the linearized equations. Next, we obtain an analytic formula for the quasinormal frequencies of the BTZ black hole for a general theory. Then, we provide a recursive formula as well as a general closed expression for order-$n$ densities which non-trivially satisfy an holographic c-theorem, clarify their relation with Born-Infeld gravities and prove that they never propagate the scalar mode. We show that at each order there exist $\#(n-6)$ densities which satisfy the holographic c-theorem trivially and that all of them are proportional to a single sextic density $Ω_{(6)}\equiv 6 \mathcal{S}_3^2-\mathcal{S}_2^3$. We prove that there are also $\#(n-6)$ order-$n$ Generalized Quasi-topological densities in three dimensions, all of which are "trivial" in the sense of making no contribution to the metric function equation. The set of such densities turns out to coincide exactly with the one of theories trivially satisfying the holographic c-theorem. We comment on the relation of $Ω_{(6)}$ to the Segre classification of three-dimensional metrics.

We compute the leading term of the tripartite information at long distances for three spheres in a CFT. This falls as $r^{-6Δ}$, where $r$ is the typical distance between the spheres, and $Δ$, the lowest primary field dimension. The coefficient turns out to be a combination of terms coming from the two- and three-point functions and depends on the OPE coefficient of the field. We check the result with three-dimensional free scalars in the lattice finding excellent agreement. When the lowest-dimensional field is a scalar, we find that the mutual information can be monogamous only for quite large OPE coefficients, far away from a perturbative regime. When the lowest-dimensional primary is a fermion, we argue that the scaling must always be faster than $r^{-6Δ_f}$. In particular, lattice calculations suggest a leading scaling $ r^{-(6Δ_f+1)}$. For free fermions in three dimensions, we show that mutual information is also non-monogamous in the long-distance regime.

The entanglement entropy corresponding to a smooth region in general three-dimensional CFTs contains a constant universal term, $-F \subset S_{\text{EE}}$. For a disk region, $F|_{\rm disk}\equiv F_0$ coincides with the free energy on $\mathbb{S}^3$ and provides an RG-monotone for general theories. As opposed to the analogous quantity in four dimensions, the value of $F$ generally depends in a complicated (and non-local) way on the geometry of the region and the theory under consideration. For small geometric deformations of the disk in general CFTs as well as for arbitrary regions in holographic theories, it has been argued that $F$ is precisely minimized by disks. Here, we argue that $F$ is globally minimized by disks with respect to arbitrary regions and for general theories. The proof makes use of the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy and the geometric fact that one can always place an osculating circle within a given smooth entangling region. For topologically non-trivial entangling regions with $n_B$ boundaries, the general bound can be improved to $F \geq n_B F_0$. In addition, we provide accurate approximations to $F$ valid for general CFTs in the case of elliptic regions for arbitrary values of the eccentricity which we check against lattice calculations for free fields. We also evaluate $F$ numerically for more general shapes in the so-called "Extensive Mutual Information model", verifying the general bound.

The mutual information $I(A,B)$ of pairs of spatially separated regions satisfies, for any $d$-dimensional CFT, a set of structural physical properties such as positivity, monotonicity, clustering, or Poincaré invariance, among others. If one imposes the extra requirement that $I(A,B)$ is extensive as a function of its arguments (so that the tripartite information vanishes for any set of regions, $I_3(A,B,C)\equiv 0$), a closed geometric formula involving integrals over $\partial A$ and $\partial B$ can be obtained. We explore whether this "Extensive Mutual Information" model (EMI), which in fact describes a free fermion in $d=2$, may similarly correspond to an actual CFT in general dimensions. Using the long-distance behavior of $I_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle EMI}(A,B)$ we show that, if it did, it would necessarily include a free fermion, but also that additional operators would have to be present in the model. Remarkably, we find that $I_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle EMI}(A,B)$ for two arbitrarily boosted spheres in general $d$ exactly matches the result for the free fermion current conformal block $G^d_{Δ=(d-1),J=1}$. On the other hand, a detailed analysis of the subleading contribution in the long-distance regime rules out the possibility that the EMI formula represents the mutual information of any actual CFT or even any limit of CFTs. These results make manifest the incompleteness of the set of known constraints required to describe the space of allowed entropy functions in QFT.

We find a plethora of new analytic black holes and globally regular horizonless spacetimes in three dimensions. The solutions involve a single real scalar field $φ$ which always admits a magnetic-like expression proportional to the angular coordinate. The new metrics, which satisfy $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and represent continuous generalizations of the BTZ one, solve the equations of Einstein gravity corrected by a new family of densities (controlled by unconstrained couplings) constructed from positive powers of $(\partial φ)^2$ and certain linear combinations of $R^{ab} \partial_a φ\partial_b φ$ and $(\partial φ)^2 R$. Some of the solutions obtained describe black holes with one or several horizons. A set of them possesses curvature singularities, while others have conical or BTZ-like ones. Interestingly, in some cases the black holes have no singularity at all, being completely regular. Some of the latter are achieved without any kind of fine tuning or constraint between the action parameters and/or the physical charges of the solution. An additional class of solutions describes globally regular and horizonless geometries.

The holographic entanglement entropy functional for higher-curvature gravities involves a weighted sum whose evaluation, beyond quadratic order, requires a complicated theory-dependent splitting of the Riemann tensor components. Using the splittings of general relativity one can obtain unambiguous formulas perturbatively valid for general higher-curvature gravities. Within this setup, we perform a novel rewriting of the functional which gets rid of the weighted sum. The formula is particularly neat for general cubic and quartic theories, and we use it to explicitly evaluate the corresponding functionals. In the case of Lovelock theories, we find that the anomaly term can be written in terms of the exponential of a differential operator. We also show that order-$n$ densities involving $n_R$ Riemann tensors (combined with $n-n_R$ Ricci's) give rise to terms with up to $2n_R-2$ extrinsic curvatures. In particular, densities built from arbitrary Ricci curvatures combined with zero or one Riemann tensors have no anomaly term in their functionals. Finally, we apply our results for cubic gravities to the evaluation of universal terms coming from various symmetric regions in general dimensions. In particular, we show that the universal function characteristic of corner regions in $d=3$ gets modified in its functional dependence on the opening angle with respect to the Einstein gravity result.

We continue our study of reflected entropy, $R(A,B)$, for Gaussian systems. In this paper we provide general formulas valid for free scalar fields in arbitrary dimensions. Similarly to the fermionic case, the resulting expressions are fully determined in terms of correlators of the fields, making them amenable to lattice calculations. We apply this to the case of a $(1+1)$-dimensional chiral scalar, whose reflected entropy we compute for two intervals as a function of the cross-ratio, comparing it with previous holographic and free-fermion results. For both types of free theories we find that reflected entropy satisfies the conjectural monotonicity property $R(A,BC) \geq R(A,B)$. Then, we move to $(2+1)$ dimensions and evaluate it for square regions for free scalars, fermions and holography, determining the very-far and very-close regimes and comparing them with their mutual information counterparts. In all cases considered, both for $(1+1)$- and $(2+1)$-dimensional theories, we verify that the general inequality relating both quantities, $R(A,B)\geq I(A,B)$, is satisfied. Our results suggest that for general regions characterized by length-scales $L_A\sim L_B\sim L$ and separated a distance $\ell$, the reflected entropy in the large-separation regime ($x\equiv L/\ell \ll 1$) behaves as $R(x) \sim - I(x) \log x$ for general CFTs in arbitrary dimensions.

Exploiting the split property of quantum field theories (QFTs), a notion of von Neumann entropy associated to pairs of spatial subregions has been recently proposed both in the holographic context -- where it has been argued to be related to the entanglement wedge cross section -- and for general QFTs. We argue that the definition of this "reflected entropy" can be canonically generalized in a way which is particularly suitable for orbifold theories -- those obtained by restricting the full algebra of operators to those which are neutral under a global symmetry group. This turns out to be given by the full-theory reflected entropy minus an entropy associated to the expectation value of the "twist" operator implementing the symmetry operation. Then we show that the reflected entropy for Gaussian fermion systems can be simply written in terms of correlation functions and we evaluate it numerically for two intervals in the case of a two-dimensional Dirac field as a function of the conformal cross-ratio. Finally, we explain how the aforementioned twist operators can be constructed and we compute the corresponding expectation value and reflected entropy numerically in the case of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ bosonic subalgebra of the Dirac field.

Densities belonging to this "Generalized quasi-topological" class (GQTGs) are characterized by possessing non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild black hole satisfying $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and by having second-order equations of motion when linearized around maximally symmetric backgrounds. GQTGs for which the equation of the metric function $f(r)\equiv -g_{tt}$ is algebraic are called "Quasi-topological" and only exist for $D\geq 5$. In this paper we prove that GQTG and Quasi-topological densities exist in general dimensions and at arbitrarily high curvature orders. We present recursive formulas which allow for the systematic construction of $n$-th order densities of both types from lower order ones, as well as explicit expressions valid at any order. We also obtain the equation satisfied by $f(r)$ for general $D$ and $n$. Our results here tie up the remaining loose end in the proof presented in arXiv:1906.00987 that every gravitational effective action constructed from arbitrary contractions of the metric and the Riemann tensor is equivalent, through a metric redefinition, to some GQTG.

We study the conditions under which, given a generic quantum system, complexity metrics provide actual lower bounds to the circuit complexity associated to a set of quantum gates. Inhomogeneous cost functions ---many examples of which have been recently proposed in the literature--- are ruled out by our analysis. Such measures are shown to be unrelated to circuit complexity in general and to produce severe violations of Lloyd's bound in simple situations. Among the metrics which do provide lower bounds, the idea is to select those which produce the tightest possible ones. This establishes a hierarchy of cost functions and considerably reduces the list of candidate complexity measures. In particular, the criterion suggests a canonical way of dealing with penalties, consisting in assigning infinite costs to directions not belonging to the gate set. We discuss how this can be implemented through the use of Lagrange multipliers. We argue that one of the surviving cost functions defines a particularly canonical notion in the sense that: i) it straightforwardly follows from the standard Hermitian metric in Hilbert space; ii) its associated complexity functional is closely related to Kirillov's coadjoint orbit action, providing an explicit realization of the ``complexity equals action'' idea; iii) it arises from a Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of the ``quantum action'' describing quantum dynamics in the phase space canonically associated to every Hilbert space. Finally, we explain how these structures provide a natural framework for characterizing chaos in classical and quantum systems on an equal footing, find the minimal geodesic connecting two nearby trajectories, and describe how complexity measures are sensitive to Lyapunov exponents.

In this paper we provide strong evidence that any gravitational effective action involving higher-curvature corrections is equivalent, via metric redefinitions, to some GQTG. In the case of theories involving invariants constructed from contractions of the Riemann tensor and the metric, we show this claim to be true as long as (at least) one non-trivial GQTG invariant exists at each order in curvature ---and extremely conclusive evidence suggests this is the case in general dimensions. When covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor are included, the evidence provided is not as definitive, but we still prove the claim explicitly for all theories including up to eight derivatives of the metric as well as for terms involving arbitrary contractions of two covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor and any number of Riemann tensors. Our results suggest that the physics of generic higher-curvature gravity black holes is captured by their GQTG counterparts, dramatically easier to characterize and universal. As an example, we map the gravity sector of the Type-IIB string theory effective action in AdS$_5$ at order $\mathcal{O}({α^{\prime}}^3)$ to a GQTG and show that the thermodynamic properties of black holes in both frames match.

First, we show that for $(3+1)$-dimensional free conformal field theories (CFTs), entangling regions emanating from vertices give rise to a universal contribution $S_n^{\rm univ}= -\frac{1}{8π}f_b(n) \int_γ k^2 \log^2(R/δ)$, where $γ$ is the curve formed by the intersection of the entangling surface with a unit sphere centered at the vertex, and $k$ the trace of its extrinsic curvature. While for circular and elliptic cones this term reproduces the general-CFT result, it vanishes for polyhedral corners. For those, we argue that the universal contribution, which is logarithmic, is not controlled by a local integral, but rather it depends on details of the CFT in a complicated way. We also study the angle dependence for the entanglement entropy of wedge singularities in 3+1 dimensions. This is done for general CFTs in the smooth limit, and using free and holographic CFTs at generic angles. In the latter case, we show that the wedge contribution is not proportional to the entanglement entropy of a corner region in the $(2+1)$-dimensional holographic CFT. Finally, we show that the mutual information of two regions that touch at a point is not necessarily divergent, as long as the contact is through a sufficiently sharp corner. Similarly, we provide examples of singular entangling regions which do not modify the structure of divergences of the entanglement entropy compared with smooth surfaces.

We argue that the presence of an inflationary epoch is a natural, almost unavoidable, consequence of the existence of a sensible effective action involving an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action. No additional fields besides the metric are required. We show that a family of such corrections giving rise to a well-posed cosmological evolution exists and automatically replaces the radiation-dominated early-universe Big Bang by a singularity-free period of exponential growth of the scale factor, which is gracefully connected with standard late-time $Λ$CDM cosmology. The class of higher-curvature theories giving rise to sensible cosmological evolution share additional remarkable properties such as the existence of Schwarzschild-like non-hairy black holes, or the fact that, just like for Einstein gravity, the only degrees of freedom propagated on the vacuum are those of the standard graviton.

We present several results concerning the free energy of odd-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) on squashed spheres. First, we propose a formula which computes this quantity for holographic CFTs dual to higher-curvature gravities with second-order linearized equations of motion. As opposed to standard on-shell action methods for Taub geometries, our formula is automatically UV-finite and only involves a simple evaluation of the corresponding bulk Lagrangian on an auxiliary pure-AdS space. The expression is closely related to the function determining the possible AdS vacua of the bulk theory in question, which we argue to act as a generating functional from which correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor can be easily characterized. Finally, based on holographic results and free-field numerical calculations, we conjecture that the subleading term in the squashing-parameter free-energy expansion is universally controlled by the stress-tensor three-point function charge $t_4$ for general $(2+1)$-dimensional CFTs.

We construct a plethora of new Euclidean AdS-Taub-NUT and bolt solutions of several four- and six-dimensional higher-curvature theories of gravity with various base spaces $\mathcal{B}$. In $D=4$, we consider Einsteinian cubic gravity, for which we construct solutions with $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{S}^2,\mathbb{T}^2$. These represent the first generalizations of the Einstein gravity Taub-NUT/bolt solutions for any higher-curvature theory in four dimensions. In $D=6$, we show that no new solutions are allowed for any Generalized quasi-topological gravity at cubic order. They exist however when we consider quartic Quasi-topological and Generalized quasi-topological terms, for which we construct new solutions with $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{CP}^2,\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2,\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2,\mathbb{T}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2$. In all cases, the solutions are characterized by a single metric function, and they reduce to the corresponding ones in Einstein gravity when the higher-curvature couplings are set to zero. While the explicit profiles must be constructed numerically (except for a few cases), we obtain fully analytic expressions for the thermodynamic properties of all solutions. The new solutions present important differences with respect to Einstein gravity, including regular bolts for arbitrary values of the NUT charge, critical points, and re-entrant phase transitions.

The theory admits explicit non-hairy AdS$_4$ black holes and allows for numerous exact calculations, fully nonperturbative in the new coupling. We identify several entries of the AdS/CFT dictionary for this theory, and study its thermodynamic phase space, finding interesting new phenomena. We also analyze the dependence of Rényi entropies for disk regions on universal quantities characterizing the CFT. In addition, we show that $η/s$ is given by a non-analytic function of the ECG coupling, and that the existence of positive-energy black holes strictly forbids violations of the KSS bound. Along the way, we introduce a new method for evaluating Euclidean on-shell actions for general higher-order gravities possessing second-order linearized equations on AdS$_{(d+1)}$. Our generalized action involves the very same Gibbons-Hawking boundary term and counterterms valid for Einstein gravity, which now appear weighted by the universal charge $a^*$ controlling the entanglement entropy across a spherical region in the CFT dual to the corresponding higher-order theory.

Structure at the horizon scale of black holes would give rise to echoes of the gravitational wave signal associated with the post-merger ringdown phase in binary coalescences. We study the waveform of echoes in static and stationary, traversable wormholes in which perturbations are governed by a symmetric effective potential. We argue that echoes are dominated by the wormhole quasinormal frequency nearest to the fundamental black hole frequency that controls the primary signal. We put forward an accurate method to construct the echoes waveform(s) from the primary signal and the quasinormal frequencies of the wormhole, which we characterize. We illustrate this in the static Damour-Solodukhin wormhole and in a new, rotating generalization that approximates a Kerr black hole outside the throat. Rotation gives rise to a potential with an intermediate plateau region that breaks the degeneracy of the quasinormal frequencies. Rotation also leads to late-time instabilities which, however, fade away for small angular momentum.

We study the partition function of odd-dimensional conformal field theories placed on spheres with a squashed metric. We establish that the round sphere provides a local extremum for the free energy which, in general, is not a global extremum. In addition, we show that the leading quadratic correction to the free energy around this extremum is proportional to the coefficient, $C_T$, determining the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT. For three-dimensional CFTs, we compute explicitly this proportionality constant for a class of squashing deformations which preserve an $SU(2)\times U(1)$ isometry group on the sphere. In addition, we evaluate the free energy as a function of the squashing parameter for theories of free bosons, free fermions, as well as CFTs holographically dual to Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We observe that, after suitable normalization, the dependence of the free energy on the squashing parameter for all these theories is nearly universal for a large region of parameter space and is well approximated by a simple quadratic function arising from holography. We generalize our results to five-dimensional CFTs and, in this context, we also study theories holographically dual to six-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

We prove this to be the case for an infinite family of ghost-free theories involving terms of arbitrarily high order in curvature. The new black holes, which are non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's solution, present a universal thermodynamic behavior for general values of the higher-order couplings. In particular, small black holes have infinite lifetimes. When the evaporation process makes the semiclassical approximation break down (something that occurs after a time which is usually infinite for all practical purposes), the resulting object retains a huge entropy, in stark contrast with Schwarzschild's case.

We establish various general results concerning static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions of general higher-derivative extensions of Einstein gravity. We prove that the only theories susceptible of admitting solutions with $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and representing the exterior field of a spherically symmetric distribution of mass are those that only propagate a massless and traceless graviton on the vacuum. Then, we provide a simple (and computationally powerful) sufficient condition for a theory to admit solutions of that kind, as well as a systematic way for constructing them for a given theory. We conjecture (and provide strong evidence) that all black holes constructed according to our criteria are completely determined by their mass (non-hairy), and such that their thermodynamic properties can be obtained by solving a system of algebraic equations without free parameters. Our results can be straightforwardly extended to planar and hyperbolic horizons. We illustrate this by obtaining new planar asymptotically $AdS_5$ black hole solutions of the recently constructed Generalized quasitopological gravity [arXiv:1703.01631], which belongs to the class of theories selected by our results.

We calculate the universal contribution to the $α$-Renyi entropy from a cubic trihedral corner in the boundary of the entangling region in 3+1 dimensions for a massless free scalar. The universal number, $v_α$, is manifest as the coefficient of a scaling term that is logarithmic in the size of the entangling region. Our numerical calculations find that this universal coefficient has both larger magnitude and the opposite sign to that induced by a smooth spherical entangling boundary in 3+1 dimensions, for which there is a well-known subleading logarithmic scaling. Despite these differences, up to the uncertainty of our finite-size lattice calculations, the functional dependence of the trihedral coefficient $v_α$ on the Rényi index $α$ is indistinguishable from that for a sphere, which is known analytically for a massless free scalar. We comment on the possible source of this $α$-dependence arising from the general structure of (3+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, and suggest calculations past the free scalar which could further illuminate the general structure of the trihedral divergence in the Rényi entropy.

We show that the linearized higher derivative gravitational field equations are equivalent to an equilibrium condition on the entanglement entropy of small spherical regions in vacuum. This extends Jacobson's recent derivation of the Einstein equation using entanglement to include general higher derivative corrections. The corrections are naturally associated with the subleading divergences in the entanglement entropy, which take the form of a Wald entropy evaluated on the entangling surface. Variations of this Wald entropy are related to the field equations through an identity for causal diamonds in maximally symmetric spacetimes, which we derive for arbitrary higher derivative theories. If the variations are taken holding fixed a geometric functional that we call the generalized volume, the identity becomes an equivalence between the linearized constraints and the entanglement equilibrium condition. We note that the fully nonlinear higher curvature equations cannot be derived from the linearized equations applied to small balls, in contrast to the situation encountered in Einstein gravity. The generalized volume is a novel result of this work, and we speculate on its thermodynamic role in the first law of causal diamond mechanics, as well as its possible application to holographic complexity.

We study the universal contributions to the entanglement entropy (EE) of 2+1d and 3+1d holographic conformal field theories (CFTs) on topologically non-trivial manifolds, focusing on tori. The holographic bulk corresponds to AdS-soliton geometries. We characterize the properties of these regulator-independent EE terms as a function of both the size of the cylindrical entangling region, and the shape of the torus. In 2+1d, in the simple limit where the torus becomes a thin 1d ring, the EE reduces to a shape-independent constant $2γ$. This is twice the EE obtained by bipartitioning an infinite cylinder into equal halves. We study the RG flow of $γ$ by defining a renormalized EE that 1) is applicable to general QFTs, 2) resolves the failure of the area law subtraction, and 3) is inspired by the F-theorem. We find that the renormalized $γ$ decreases monotonically when the holographic CFT is deformed by a relevant operator for all allowed scaling dimensions. We also discuss the question of non-uniqueness of such renormalized EEs both in 2+1d and 3+1d.

We study several aspects of higher-order gravities constructed from general contractions of the Riemann tensor and the metric in arbitrary dimensions. First, we use the fast-linearization procedure presented in arXiv:1607.06463 to obtain the equations satisfied by the metric perturbation modes on a maximally symmetric background in the presence of matter and to classify $\mathcal{L}($Riemann$)$ theories according to their spectrum. Then, we linearize all theories up to quartic order in curvature and use this result to construct quartic versions of Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG). In addition, we show that the most general cubic gravity constructed in a dimension-independent way and which does not propagate the ghost-like spin-2 mode (but can propagate the scalar) is a linear combination of $f($Lovelock$)$ invariants, plus the ECG term, plus a New ghost-free gravity term. Next, we construct the generalized Newton potential and the Post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ for general $\mathcal{L}($Riemann$)$ gravities in arbitrary dimensions, unveiling some interesting differences with respect to the four-dimensional case. We also study the emission and propagation of gravitational radiation from sources for these theories in four dimensions, providing a generalized formula for the power emitted. Finally, we review Wald's formalism for general $\mathcal{L}($Riemann$)$ theories and construct new explicit expressions for the relevant quantities involved. Many examples illustrate our calculations.

We construct static and spherically symmetric generalizations of the Schwarzschild- and Reissner-Nordström-(Anti-)de Sitter (RN-(A)dS) black-hole solutions in four-dimensional Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG). The solutions are determined by a single blackening factor which satisfies a non-linear second-order differential equation. Interestingly, we are able to compute independently the Hawking temperature $T$, the Wald entropy $\mathsf{S}$ and the Abbott-Deser mass $M$ of the solutions analytically as functions of the horizon radius and the ECG coupling constant $λ$. Using these we show that the first law of black-hole mechanics is exactly satisfied. Some of the solutions have positive specific heat, which makes them thermodynamically stable, even in the uncharged and asymptotically flat case. Further, we claim that, up to cubic order in curvature, ECG is the most general four-dimensional theory of gravity which allows for non-trivial single-blackening factor generalizations of Schwarzschild- and RN-(A)dS which reduce to the usual Einstein gravity solutions when the corresponding higher-order couplings are set to zero.

We drastically simplify the problem of linearizing a general higher-order theory of gravity. We reduce it to the evaluation of its Lagrangian on a particular Riemann tensor depending on two parameters, and the computation of two derivatives with respect to one of those parameters. We use our method to construct a D-dimensional cubic theory of gravity which satisfies the following properties: 1) it shares the spectrum of Einstein gravity, i.e., it only propagates a transverse and massless graviton on a maximally symmetric background; 2) the relative coefficients of the different curvature invariants involved are the same in all dimensions; 3) it is neither trivial nor topological in four dimensions. Up to cubic order in curvature, the only previously known theories satisfying the first two requirements are the Lovelock ones: Einstein gravity, Gauss-Bonnet and cubic-Lovelock. Of course, the last two theories fail to satisfy requirement 3 as they are, respectively, topological and trivial in four dimensions. We show that, up to cubic order, there exists only one additional theory satisfying requirements 1 and 2. Interestingly, this theory is, along with Einstein gravity, the only theory which also satisfies 3.
