Pump-probe experiments have turned out as a powerful tool in order to study the dynamics of competing orders in a large variety of materials. The corresponding analysis of the data often relies on standard linear-response theory generalized to non-equilibrium situations. Here we examine the validity of such an approach within the attractive Hubbard model for which the dynamics of pairing and charge-density wave orders is computed using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation (TDHF). Our calculations reveal that the `linear-response assumption' is justified for small to moderate non-equilibrium situations (i.e., pump pulses) when the symmetry of the pump-induced state differs from that of the external field. This is the case, when we consider the pairing response in a charge-ordered state or the charge-order response in a superconducting state. The situation is very different when the non-equilibrium state and the external probe field have the same symmetry. In this case, we observe significant changes of the response in magnitude but also due to mode coupling when moving away from an equilibrium state, indicating the failure of the linear-response assumption.

We study Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions as variational ground states for the two-impurity Anderson model (TIAM) at particle-hole symmetry as a function of the impurity separation ${\bf R}$. Our variational state is obtained by applying the Gutzwiller many-particle correlator to a single-particle product state. We determine the optimal single-particle product state fully variationally from an effective non-interacting TIAM that contains a direct electron transfer between the impurities as variational degree of freedom. For a large Hubbard interaction $U$ between the electrons on the impurities, the impurity spins experience a Heisenberg coupling proportional to $V^2/U$ where $V$ parameterizes the strength of the on-site hybridization. For small Hubbard interactions we observe weakly coupled impurities. In general, for a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice we find discontinuous quantum phase transitions that separate weakly interacting impurities for small interactions from singlet pairs for large interactions.

We study the non-interacting two-impurity Anderson model on a lattice using the Green function equation-of-motion method. A case of particular interest is the RKKY limit that is characterized by a small hybridization between impurities and host electrons and the absence of a direct coupling between the impurities. In contrast to the low-density case, at half band-filling and particle-hole symmetry, the RKKY interaction decays as the inverse square of the impurity distance along the axis of a simple cubic lattice. In the RKKY limit, for the spectral function we generically observe a small splitting of the single-impurity resonance into two peaks. For a vanishing density-density correlation function of the host electrons, we find only a broadened single peak in the local density of states.

We employ density-functional theory (DFT) in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and its extensions GGA+$U$ and GGA+Gutzwiller to calculate the magnetic exchange couplings between pairs of Mn ions substituting Cd in a CdTe crystal at very small do**. DFT(GGA) overestimates the exchange couplings by a factor of three because it underestimates the charge-transfer gap in Mn-doped II-VI semiconductors. Fixing the nearest-neighbor coupling $J_1$ to its experimental value in GGA+$U$, in GGA+Gutzwiller, or by a simple scaling of the DFT(GGA) results provides acceptable values for the exchange couplings at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th neighbor distances in Cd(Mn)Te, Zn(Mn)Te, Zn(Mn)Se, and Zn(Mn)S. In particular, we recover the experimentally observed relation $J_4>J_2,J_3$. The filling of the Mn 3$d$-shell is not integer which puts the underlying Heisenberg description into question. However, using a few-ion toy model the picture of a slightly extended local moment emerges so that an integer $3d$-shell filling is not a prerequisite for equidistant magnetization plateaus, as seen in experiment.

We employ the Gutzwiller variational approach to investigate the interplay of Coulomb interaction and spin-orbit coupling in a three-orbital Hubbard model. Already in the paramagnetic phase we find a substantial renormalization of the spin-orbit coupling that enters the effective single-particle Hamiltonian for the quasi-particles. Only close to half band-filling and for sizable Coulomb interaction we observe clear signatures of Hund's atomic rules for spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. For a finite local Hund's-rule exchange interaction we find a ferromagnetically ordered state. The spin-orbit coupling considerably reduces the size of the ordered moment, it generates a small ordered orbital moment, and it induces a magnetic anisotropy. To investigate the magnetic anisotropy energy, we use an external magnetic field that tilts the magnetic moment away from the easy axis $(1,1,1)$.

We study the interplay of nematic and superconducting order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model and show that they can coexist, especially when superconductivity is not the energetically dominant phase. Due to a breaking of the $C_4$ symmetry, the coexisting phase inherently contains admixture of the $s$-wave pairing components. As a result, the superconducting gap exhibits very non-standard features including changed nodal directions. Our results also show that in the optimally doped regime the superconducting phase is typically unstable towards develo** nematicity (breaking of the $C_4$ symmetry). This has implications for the cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors, for which in this regime the so-called intertwined orders have recently been observed. Namely, the coexisting phase may be viewed as a precursor to such more involved patterns of symmetry breaking.

Our method resolves most shortcomings of an ordinary Density Functional calculation on nickel. This constitutes a serious problem for all methods that attempt to merge Density Functional Theory with correlated-electron approaches based on Hubbard-type local interactions.

A systematic diagrammatic expansion for Gutzwiller-wave functions (DE-GWF) proposed very recently is used for the description of superconducting (SC) ground state in the two-dimensional square-lattice $t$-$J$ model with the hop** electron amplitudes $t$ (and $t'$) between nearest (and next-nearest) neighbors. On the example of the SC state analysis we provide a detailed comparison of the method results with other approaches. Namely: (i) the truncated DE-GWF method reproduces the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results; (ii) in the lowest (zeroth) order of the expansion the method can reproduce the analytical results of the standard Gutzwiller approximation (GA), as well as of the recently proposed "grand-canonical Gutzwiller approximation" (GCGA). We obtain important features of the SC state. First, the SC gap at the Fermi surface resembles a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave only for optimally- and overdoped system, being diminished in the antinodal regions for the underdoped case in a qualitative agreement with experiment. Corrections to the gap structure are shown to arise from the longer range of the real-space pairing. Second, the nodal Fermi velocity is almost constant as a function of do** and agrees semi-quantitatively with experimental results. Third, we compare the do** dependence of the gap magnitude with experimental data. Fourth, we analyze the $\mathbf{k}$-space properties of the model: Fermi surface topology and effective dispersion. The DE-GWF method opens up new perspectives for studying strongly-correlated systems, as: (i) it works in the thermodynamic limit, (ii) is comparable in accuracy to VMC, and (iii) has numerical complexity comparable to GA (i.e., it provides the results much faster than the VMC approach).

We demonstrate the stability of a spin-triplet paired s-wave (with an admixture of extended s-wave) state for the case of purely repulsive interactions in a degenerate two-band Hubbard model. We further show that near half-filling the considered kind of superconductivity can coexist with antiferromagnetism. The calculations have been carried out with the use of the so-called statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation for the case of a square lattice. The absence of a stable paired state when analyzed in the Hartree-Fock-BCS approximation allows us to claim that the electron correlations in conjunction with the Hund's rule exchange play the crucial role in stabilizing the spin-triplet superconducting state. A sizable hybridization of the bands suppresses the paired state.

An orbitally degenerate two-band Hubbard model is analyzed with inclusion of the Hund's rule induced spin-triplet paired states and their coexistence with magnetic ordering. The so-called statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation (SGA) has been applied to the case of a square lattice. The superconducting gaps, the magnetic moment, and the free energy are analyzed as a function of the Hund's rule coupling strength and the band filling. Also, the influence of the intersite hybridization on the stability of paired phases is discussed. In order to examine the effect of correlations the results are compared with those calculated earlier within the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation combined with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach. Significant differences between the two used methods (HF+BCS vs. SGA+real-space pairing) appear in the stability regions of the considered phases. Our results supplement the analysis of this canonical model used widely in the discussions of pure magnetic phases with the detailed elaboration of the stability of the spin-triplet superconducting states and the coexistent magnetic-superconducting states. At the end, we briefly discuss qualitatively the factors that need to be included for a detailed quantitative comparison with the corresponding experimental results.

Within a Lagrangian formalism we derive the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation for general multi-band Hubbard models. Our approach explicitly incorporates the coupling between time-dependent variational parameters and a time-dependent density matrix from which we obtain dynamical correlation functions in the linear response regime. Our results are illustrated for the one-band model where we show that the interacting system can be mapped to an effective problem of fermionic quasiparticles coupled to "doublon" (double occupancy) bosonic fluctuations. The latter have an energy on the scale of the on-site Hubbard repulsion $U$ in the dilute limit but becomes soft at the Brinkman-Rice transition which is shown to be related to an emerging conservation law of doublon charge and the associated gauge invariance. Coupling with the boson mode produces structure in the charge response and we find that a similar structure appears in dynamical mean-field theory.

A systematic diagrammatic expansion for Gutzwiller-wave functions (DE-GWF) is formulated and used for the description of superconducting (SC) ground state in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with electron-transfer amplitudes t (and t') between nearest (and next-nearest) neighbors. The method is numerically very efficient and allows for a detailed analysis of the phase diagram as a function of all relevant parameters (U, δ, t') and a determination of the kinetic-energy driven pairing region. SC states appear only for substantial interactions, U/t > 3, and for not too large hole do**, δ< 0.32 for t' = 0.25 t; this upper critical do** value agrees well with experiment for the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. We also obtain other important features of the SC state: (i) the SC gap at the Fermi surface resembles $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave only around the optimal do** and the corrections to this state are shown to arise from the longer range of the pairing; (ii) the nodal Fermi velocity is almost constant as a function of do** and agrees quantitatively with the experimental results; (iii) the SC transition is driven by the kinetic-energy lowering for low do** and strong interactions.

Our method can be implemented into LDA+Gutzwiller schemes and will therefore be an important tool for the computation of response functions for strongly correlated materials.

We investigate multi-band Hubbard models for the three iron 3$d$-$t_{2g}$ bands and the two iron 3$d$-$e_g$ bands in ${\rm La O Fe As}$ by means of the Gutzwiller variational theory. Our analysis of the paramagnetic ground state shows that neither Hartree--Fock mean-field theories nor effective spin models describe these systems adequately. In contrast to Hartree--Fock-type approaches, the Gutzwiller theory predicts that antiferromagnetic order requires substantial values of the local Hund's-rule exchange interaction. For the three-band model, the antiferromagnetic moment fits experimental data for a broad range of interaction parameters. However, for the more appropriate five-band model, the iron $e_g$ electrons polarize the $t_{2g}$ electrons and they substantially contribute to the ordered moment.

The self-energy is extracted for high binding energies reaching up to 500 meV, using a Gutzwiller calculation as a reference frame for correlated quasiparticles. Significant deviations exist in the 300 meV range, as identified on magnetic bulk bands for the first time. The discrepancy is strikingly well described by a self-energy model assuming interactions with spin excitations. Implications relating to different electron-electron correlation regimes are discussed.

We use the Gutzwiller variational theory to investigate the electronic and the magnetic properties of fcc-Nickel. Our particular focus is on the effects of the spin-orbit coupling. Unlike standard relativistic band-structure theories, we reproduce the experimental magnetic moment direction and we explain the change of the Fermi-surface topology that occurs when the magnetic moment direction is rotated by an external magnetic field. The Fermi surface in our calculation deviates from early de-Haas--van-Alphen (dHvA) results. We attribute these discrepancies to an incorrect interpretation of the raw dHvA data.

Ferromagnetic Nickel is the most celebrated iron group metal with pronounced discrepancies between the experimental electronic properties and predictions of density functional theories. In this work, we show in detail that the recently developed multi-band Gutzwiller theory provides a very good description of the quasi-particle band structure of nickel. We obtain the correct exchange splittings and we reproduce the experimental Fermi-surface topology. The correct (111)-direction of the magnetic easy axis and the right order of magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy are found. Our theory also reproduces the experimentally observed change of the Fermi-surface topology when the magnetic moment is oriented along the (001)-axis. In addition to the numerical study, we give an analytical derivation for a much larger class of variational wave-functions than in previous investigations. In particular, we cover cases of superconductivity in multi-band lattice systems.

We define Landau quasi-particles within the Gutzwiller variational theory, and derive their dispersion relation for general multi-band Hubbard models in the limit of large spatial dimensions D. Thereby we reproduce our previous calculations which were based on a phenomenological effective single-particle Hamiltonian. For the one-band Hubbard model we calculate the first-order corrections in 1/D and find that the corrections to the quasi-particle dispersions are small in three dimensions. They may be largely absorbed in a rescaling of the total band width, unless the system is close to half band filling. Therefore, the Gutzwiller theory in the limit of large dimensions provides quasi-particle bands which are suitable for a comparison with real, three-dimensional Fermi liquids.

The results are compared with those of a recently introduced variational many-body approach to spin-waves in itinerant ferromagnets. As we exemplify for Hubbard models with one and two bands, the two approaches lead to qualitatively different results. The discrepancies can be traced back to the fact that the Hartree-Fock theory fails to describe properly the local moments which naturally arise in a correlated-electron theory.

Multi-band Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions reconcile the contrasting concepts of itinerant band electrons versus electrons localized in partially filled atomic shells. The exact evaluation of these variational ground states in the limit of large coordination number allows the identification of quasi-particle band structures, and the calculation of a variational spinwave dispersion. The study of a generic two-band model elucidates the co-operation of the Coulomb repulsion and the Hund's-rule exchange for itinerant ferromagnetism. We present results of calculations for ferromagnetic nickel, using a realistic 18 spin-orbital basis of $4s$, $4p$ and $3d$ valence electrons. The quasi-particle energy bands agree much better with the photo-emission and Fermi surface data than the band structure obtained from spin-density functional theory (SDFT).

Multi-band Gutzwiller-correlated wave functions reconcile the contrasting concepts of itinerant band electrons versus electrons localized in partially filled atomic shells. The approximate evaluation of these variational ground states becomes exact in the limit of large coordination number. The result allows the identification of quasi-particle band structures for correlated electron systems. As a first application, we summarize a study of itinerant ferromagnetism in a two-band model, thereby elucidating the co-operation of the Coulomb repulsion and the Hund's-rule exchange. Then, we present results of calculations for ferromagnetic nickel, using a realistic 18 spin-orbital basis of 4s, 4p and 3d valence electrons. Good agreement with the experimental ground-state properties of nickel is obtained. In particular, the quasi-particle energy bands agree much better with the photo-emission and Fermi surface data than the band structure obtained from spin-density functional theory. Finally, we present results for the variational spinwave dispersion for our two-band model.

We introduce a novel approach for the investigation of spin-wave excitations in itinerant ferromagnets. Our theory is based on a variational treatment of general multi-band Hubbard models which describe elements and compounds of transition metals. The magnon dispersion is derived approximately as the energy of a variational spin-wave state in the limit of large spatial dimensions. A numerical evaluation of our results is feasible for general multi-band models. As a first application we consider a model with two degenerate orbitals per lattice site. From our results we can conclude that spin-wave excitations in strong itinerant ferromagnets are very similar to those in ferromagnetic spin systems.

We introduce Gutzwiller wave functions for multi-band models with general on-site Coulomb interactions. As these wave functions employ correlators for the exact atomic eigenstates they are exact both in the non-interacting and in the atomic limit. We evaluate them in infinite lattice dimensions for all interaction strengths without any restrictions on the structure of the Hamiltonian or the symmetry of the ground state. The results for the ground-state energy allow us to derive an effective one-electron Hamiltonian for Landau quasi-particles, applicable for finite temperatures and frequencies within the Fermi-liquid regime. As applications for a two-band model we study the Brinkman-Rice metal-to-insulator transition at half band-filling, and the transition to itinerant ferromagnetism for two specific fillings, at and close to a peak in the density of states of the non-interacting system. Our new results significantly differ from those for earlier Gutzwiller wave functions where only density-type interactions were included. When the correct spin symmetries for the two-electron states are taken into account, the importance of the Hund's-rule exchange interaction is even more pronounced and leads to paramagnetic metallic ground states with large local magnetic moments. Ferromagnetism requires fairly large interaction strengths, and the resulting ferromagnetic state is a strongly correlated metal.
