We systematically present experimental and theoretical results for the dual-wavelength switching of 1560 nm, 75 fs signal pulses (SPs) driven by 1030 nm, 270 fs control pulses (CPs) in a dual-core fiber (DCF). We demonstrate a switching contrast of 31.9 dB, corresponding to a propagation distance of 14 mm, achieved by launching temporally synchronized SP-CP pairs into the fast core of the DCF with moderate inter-core asymmetry. Our analysis employs a system of three coupled propagation equations to identify the compensation of the asymmetry by nonlinearity as the physical mechanism behind the efficient switching performance.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically effects of the inter-core propagation mismatch on nonlinear switching in dual-core high-index-contrast soft-glass optical fibers. Incident femtosecond pulses of various energy are fed into a single ("straight") core, to identify transitions between different dynamical regimes, viz., inter-core oscillations, self-trap** in the cross core, and retaining the pulse in the straight core. The transfer between channels, which has solitonic character, is controlled by the pulse's energy. A model based on the system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations reveals the effect of the mismatch parameter and pulse duration on the diagram of the various energy dependent dynamical regimes. Optimal values of the mismatch and pulse width, which ensure stable performance of the nonlinear switching, are identified. The theoretical predictions are in agreement with experimental findings.

Dispersive Fourier transformation is used to resolve the shot-to-shot spectra generated using 225 fs pump pulses at 1.55 μm, with experimental results well reproduced by vector and scalar numerical simulations. By comparing the relative intensity noise for the PM and non-PM cases, supported by simulations, we demonstrate the advantage of the polarization-maintaining property of the PM fibers in preserving low-noise dynamics. We associate the low-noise in the PM case with the suppression of polarization modulation instability.

Integration of optically-active nanodiamonds with glass fibers is a powerful method of scaling of diamond magnetic sensing functionality. We propose a novel approach for integration of nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy centers directly into the fiber core. The core is fabricated using nanostructurization, that is by stacking the preform from 790 soft glass canes, drawn from a single rod dip-coated with nanodiamonds suspended in isopropyl alcohol. This enables manual control over distribution of nanoscale features, here - the nanodiamonds across and along the fiber core. We verify this by map** the nanodiamond distribution in the core using confocal microscopy. The nanodiamonds are separated longitudinally either by 15 microns or 24 microns, while in the transverse plane separation of approximately 1 micron is observed, corresponding to the individual cane diameter in the final fiber, without significant agglomeration. Filtered, red fluorescence is observed with naked eye uniformly along the fiber. Its magnetic sensitivity is confirmed by in optically detected magnetic resonance recorded with a coiled, 60-cm-long fiber sample with readout contrast limited mainly by microwave antenna coverage. NV fluorescence intensity in 0 to 35 mT magnetic field is also demonstrated, allowing magnetometry applications with a large B-field dynamic range in absence of microwaves.

The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pum** at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

All-optical switching of 77 fs pulses centered at 1560 nm, driven by 270 fs, 1030 nm pulses in a dual-core optical fiber exhibiting high index contrast is presented. The fiber is made of a thermally matched pair of lead silicate and borosilicate glasses used as core and cladding material, respectively. The novel switching approach is based on nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry, by control pulse intensity induced group velocity reduction of the fast fiber channel. Due to the fiber core made of soft glass with high nonlinearity high switching contrast exceeding 20 dB is attained under application of control pulses of only few nanojoule energy. The optimization of the fiber length brought the best results at 14 mm, which is in good correspondence with the calculated coupling length at the signal wavelength. The results express significant progress in comparison to similar studies based on self-switching of solitonic pulses in dual-core fibers and represent high application potential.

Gallium oxide concentration was gradually increased, replacing silicon dioxide, for different cadmium and lead oxide content. The thermal and optical properties were investigated for different compositions. It was observed that the thermal stability, refractive index, and the transmission in the infrared range increased with increase of gallium and lead concentrations. The most thermally stable glass composition was selected for fabrication of optical elements such as optical fibers. We also successfully fabricated mid-infrared lenses by hot embossing for potential application in compact gas detectors

In this paper, we demonstrate a pulse energy-governed nonlinear self-switching of femtosecond pulses at wavelength of 1700 nm in a highly nonlinear high index contrast dual-core fibre. The fibre structure is composed of two microdimension cores and a solid cladding made of two thermally matched soft glasses developed in-house. A double switching behaviour under monotonic increase of the input pulse energy from 1 nJ to 3 nJ was observed at 35 mm fibre length in its anomalous dispersion region. A spatial intensity distribution measurement identified a switching contrast of 16.7 dB, and the registered spectra of the two output channels revealed a broadband switching behaviour within 150 nm. The obtained results indicate a novel type of solitonic switching and represent a significant progress in comparison to the previous experimental works and has a high application potential.

A systematic numerical study of ultrafast nonlinear directional coupler performance based on soliton self-trap** in a novel type of dual-core optical fibre is presented. The considered highly nonlinear fibre structure is composed of a real, intentionally developed soft glass-pair with high refractive index contrast at the level of 0.4 in the near infrared. Nonlinear propagation of picojoule level femtosecond pulses was studied numerically with the aim to identify the best switching performance in input parameter space of 1400 - 1800 nm in terms of excitation wavelengths, and of 75 - 150 fs in terms of pulse width, respectively. For every combination of excitation wavelength and pulse width, the switching energies together with the optimal fibre length were determined and their relation to the input and switching parameters is discussed. The highest switching contrast of 46 dB in the time window of the ultrashort soliton was predicted at combination of 1500 nm excitation wavelength and 75 fs pulse width considering 43 mm fibre length. These results represent significant improvement both from point of view of switching contrast and switching energies, which are only at level of 20 pJ, in comparison to the previously published case of air-glass dual-core photonic crystal fibre. Moreover, the simpler fibre design without cladding microstructure together with the all-solid approach holds promise of improved dual-core symmetry and therefore offers high probability of the successful realization of a low power, compact and simple switching device.

The fiber is characterized in terms of transmission over 1700-4200 nm wavelengths, revealing a mid-infrared 3500-4200 nm transmission window, clearly observable for a 12 m long fiber. Bending loss around 4000 nm is 0.5 dB/m measured over 3 full turns with 40 mm radius, going up to 5 dB/m for full turns with 15 mm radius. Our results provide experimental evidence of hollow-core silica fibers in which nested, anti-resonant capillaries provide high bend resistance in the mid-infrared. This is obtained for a fiber with large core diameter of over 60 um relative to around 30 um-capillaries in the cladding, which motivates its application in gas fiber lasers or fiber-based mid-infrared spectroscopy of COx or NxO analytes.
