$Ni_{50-x}Co_{x}Mn_{40}Sn_{10}$ shape memory alloys in the approximate range $5 \le x \le 10$ display desirable properties for applications as well as intriguing magnetism. These off-stoichiometric Heusler alloys undergo a martensitic phase transformation at a temperature $T_{M}$ of 300 - 400 K, from ferromagnetic (F) to nonferromagnetic, with unusually low thermal hysteresis and a large change in magnetization. The low temperature magnetic structures in the martensitic phase of such alloys, which are distinctly inhomogeneous, are of great interest but are not well understood. Our present use of spin echo NMR, in the large hyperfine fields at $^{55}Mn$ sites, provides compelling evidence that nanoscale magnetic phase separation into F and antiferromagnetic (AF) regions occurs below $T_{M}$ in alloys with x in the range 0 to 7. At finite Co substitution the F regions are found to be of two distinct types, corresponding to high and low local concentrations of Co on Ni sites. Estimates of the size distributions of both the F and AF nanoregions have been made. At x = 7 the AF component is not long-range ordered, even below 4 K, and is quite different to the AF component found at x = 0; by x = 14 the F phase is completely dominant. Of particular interest, we find, for x = 7, that field cooling leads to dramatic changes in the AF regions. These findings provide insight into the origins of magnetic phase separation and superparamagnetism in these complex alloys, particularly their intrinsic exchange bias, which is of considerable current interest.

We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at $P$ $\sim$ 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: $k_BT_c/E_F$ $\sim$ 0.1 even at $P$ = 16.1 kbar.

The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically associated with the Fermi points in the field-induced quasi-one-dimensional electronic dispersion, implying that it results from the axial anomaly among these Fermi points. In its original formulation, the anomaly is predicted to violate separate number conservation laws for left- and right-handed chiral- (e.g. Weyl) fermions. Its observation in PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ suggests that the anomaly affects the transport of clean conductors, particularly near the quantum limit.

The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, Fe2+-Fe3+ hop**, and disorder among Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ ions.

Two critical points have been revealed in the normal-state phase diagram of the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ by exploring the Fermi surface properties of high quality single crystals by high-field magnetotransport. First, the quantitative analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect shows that the weak superlattice potential responsible for the Fermi surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime extrapolates to zero at the do** level $x_c = 0.175$ corresponding to the onset of superconductivity. Second, the high-field Hall coefficient exhibits a sharp drop right below optimal do** $x_{\mathrm{opt}} = 0.145$ where the superconducting transition temperature is maximum. This drop is most likely caused by the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. Thus, the superconducting dome appears to be pinned by two critical points to the normal state phase diagram.

Study was undertaken on overdoped single crystals with $x$=0.108 and $x$=0.127 characterized by notable modulation of the superconducting gap. Irradiation with doses 2.22$\times10^{11}$$\textit{d}$/cm$^2$ and 2.4$\times10^{11}$$\textit{d}$/cm$^2$, corresponding to the matching fields of $B_φ = $6 T and 6.5 T, respectively, suppresses the superconducting $T_c$ by approximately 0.3 to 1 K. The variation of the low-temperature penetration depth in both pristine and irradiated samples is well described by the power-law, $Δλ(T)=AT^n$. Irradiation increases the magnitude of the pre-factor $A$ and decreases the exponent $n$, similar to the effect of irradiation in optimally doped samples. This finding supports universal $s_{\pm}$ pairing in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds for the whole Co do** range.

The MR voltage bias dependence reveals an enhancement (at low biases) and the oscillatory behavior at temperatures below 10 K. The low temperature isotropic MR behavior has been attributed to the charging effects in the polymer nanofiber which considered as an array of small conducting regions separated by nano barriers. These effects at low temperatures lead to the single electron tunneling represented by the Coulomb blockade regime as well as to an enhancement and oscillation of the tunnel MR.

The compound lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 provides an effective demonstration of the interaction of pi-conduction electron and d-electron localized moment systems in molecular crystalline materials where antiferromagnetic insulating and magnetic field induced superconducting states can be realized. The metal-insulator transition has been thought to be cooperative, involving both the itinerant pi- electron and localized d-electron spins where antiferromagnetic order appears in both systems simultaneously. However, recent specific heat data has indicated otherwise [Akiba et al., J. Phys. Soc. Japan 78,033601(2009)]: although the pi-electron system orders antiferromagnetically and produces a metal-insulator transition, a "mysterious" paramagnetic d-electron state remains. We report 57Fe Mossbauer measurements that support the paramagnetic model, provided the d-electron spins remain in a fast relaxation state below the transition. From the measured hyperfine fields, we also determine the temperature dependence of the pi-d electron exchange field.

Dielectric relaxation is universal in characterizing polar liquids and solids, insulators, and semiconductors, and the theoretical models are well developed. However, in high magnetic fields, previously unknown aspects of dielectric relaxation can be revealed and exploited. Here, we report low temperature dielectric relaxation measurements in lightly doped silicon in high dc magnetic fields B both parallel and perpendicular to the applied ac electric field E. For B//E, we observe a temperature and magnetic field dependent dielectric dispersion e(w)characteristic of conventional Debye relaxation where the free carrier concentration is dependent on thermal dopant ionization, magnetic freeze-out, and/or magnetic localization effects. However, for BperpE, anomalous dispersion emerges in e(w) with increasing magnetic field. It is shown that the Debye formalism can be simply extended by adding the Lorentz force to describe the general response of a dielectric in crossed magnetic and electric fields. Moreover, we predict and observe a new transverse dielectric response EH perp B perp E not previously described in magneto-dielectric measurements. The new formalism allows the determination of the mobility and the ability to discriminate between magnetic localization/freeze out and Lorentz force effects in the magneto-dielectric response.

The results show that in the low $T$ limit, where the localized Fe$^{3+}$ spins ($S_{d}$ = 5/2) are almost fully polarized, the conduction electrons (Se $π$-electrons, spin $s_π$ = 1/2) in the BETS molecules experience an exchange field ($\bf{B}$$_{πd}$) from the Fe$^{3+}$ spins with a value of $-$ 32.7 $\pm$ 1.5 T at 5 K and 9 T aligned opposite to $\bf{B}$$_{0}$. This large negative value of $\bf{B}$$_{πd}$ is consistent with that predicted by the resistivity measurements and supports the Jaccarino-Peter internal field-compensation mechanism being responsible for the origin of field-induced superconductivity.

The magnetic field dependent phase diagram of the ferroelectric material ${\rm Ho}_{1-x}Y_{x}MnO_{3}$ has been investigated for x = 0, 0.6, and 0.8 for fields directed along both the ab in-plane and c-axis basal plane directions. Dielectric measurements are used to map out the re-entrant temperature-magnetic field phase transitions which involve in-plane Mn spin rotations in the antiferromagnetic state below the N$\acute{e}$el temperature. We show through the alloy study that the Ho sublattice plays a major role in all transitions, and that the phase diagram for $Ho_{1-x}Y_{x}MnO_{3}$ is dependent on magnetic field direction. We describe this behavior in terms of the interaction of the Ho sublattice spin system with the underlying, robust $YMnO_{3}$ antiferromagnetic triangular lattice, where the Ho-Y spin interactions are highly sensitive to concentration and field direction.

The intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6 with Tc ~ 11.5 K has been synthesized and characterized with magnetoresistance measurements. Above the transition, the resistivity follows a T^2 dependence up to 50 K, which suggests Fermi liquid behavior. Above 50 K, the data can be fit to the Bloch-Gruneisen model providing a Debye temperature of theta = 263 K. By using McMillan formula, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant of lambda = 0.85 which places this material in the intermediate-coupling regime. The upper critical field is determined parallel and perpendicular to the superconducting planes, and the dependence of the upper critical field as a function of angle suggests that this is a quasi-2D superconductivity. All of these measurements are consistent with BCS-like superconductivity.

Funtionalized pentacene, 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene), field-effect transistors(FET's) were made by thermal evaporation or solution deposition method and the mobility was measured as a function of temperature and light power. The field-effect mobility ($μ$$_{\rm FET}$) has a gate-voltage dependent activation energy. A non-monotonic temperature dependence was observed at high gate voltage (V$_G$ $<$ -30 V) with activation energy E$_a$ $\sim$ 60 - 170 meV,depending on the fabrication procedure. The gate-voltage dependent mobility and non-monotonic temperature dependence indicates that shallow traps play important role in the transport of TIPS-pentacene films. The current in the saturation regime as well as mobility increase upon light illumination and is proportional to the light intensity, mainly due to the photoconductive response. Transistors with submicron channel length showed unsaturating current-voltage characteristics due to the short channel effect. Realization of simple circuits such as NOT(inverter), NOR, and NAND logic gates are demonstrated for thin film TIPS-pentacene transistors.

We explore the dielectric relaxation properties of NiFe nanowires in a nanoporous silicon template. Dielectric data of the NiFe-silicon structure show a strong relaxation resonance near 30K. This system shows Arrhenius type of behavior in the temperature dependence of dissipation peaks vs. frequency. We report magnetic field dependence of dipolar relaxation rate and the appearance of structure in the dielectric spectrum related to multiple relaxation rates. A magnetic field affects both the exponential prefactor in the Arrhenius formula and the activation energy. From this field dependence we derive a simple exponential field dependence for the prefactor and linear field approximation for the activation energy which describes the data. We find a significant angular dependence of the dielectric relaxation spectrum for regular silicon and nanostructured silicon vs. magnetic field direction, and describe a simple sum-rule that describes this dependence. We find that although similar behaviour is observed in both template and nanostructured materials, the NiFe-silicon shows a more complex, magnetic field dependent relaxation spectrum.

Of the dense Kondo materials in the class CeTSb2 (where T = Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, or Pd), CeAgSb2 is special due to its complex magnetic ground state, which exhibits both ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic character below an ordering temperature TO ~ 9.8 K. To further elucidate a description this magnetic ground state, we have carried out a systematic study of single crystalline CeAgSb2 by magnetic, electrical magneto-transport, and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) studies over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic phase diagram based solely on magnetoresistance data. Here, depending on the orientation of the magnetic field H, either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below TO. The resistivity of this compound below TO does not follow a simple Fermi liquid behavior, but requires an additional contribution from conduction electron scattering from boson excitations with an energy gap, D. At zero field the temperature dependent resistivity below TO is most consistent with antiferromagnetic order, based on the transport theory which includes magnon scattering. Crystal field effect theory applied to the susceptibility data yields splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited states of 53 K and 137 K, respectively. Although there is some uncertainty in the Kondo temperature determination, we estimate TK ~ 23 K from our analysis. In the Fermi surface studies, the measurements show very small Fermi surface sections, not predicted by band structure calculations, and the SdH amplitudes are very sensitive to field direction. Only by considering lens orbits between the main Fermi surface cylinders can the SdH results be reconciled with the Fermi surface topology predicted from band structure.

We report magnetization, susceptibility, electrical transport, and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of single crystals of beta-AgNpO2(SeO3). Here the valence of the Np sites is expected to be Np(V). We observe a magnetic transition below 8 K, where the transition temperature is dependent on the effective magnetic moment. Although the transition appears to be ferromagnetic, no hysteresis is seen in the magnetization, and the saturation moment above 0.1 T is found to be about 60% of the free NpO2 ion moment. The decrease in the Np moments determined experimentally is thought to arise from crystal field and spin-orbit effects. Although Np(V) is expected to be ESR silent, we observe temperature dependent ESR spectra at ~44 GHz (for fields above the saturation field) that show slight shifts in the g-factor and line width at low temperatures. Our results provide evidence that both Np(V) and Np(IV) valences are present, where the latter may be a minority population. The crystals, although dark in appearance, are electrically insulating (rho > 10^10 Ohm-cm) at room temperature.

Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) has been observed in the insulating antiferromagnetic phase, and its frequency-field dependence can be reproduced by the biaxial anisotropic AFMR theory. We find that in this alloy system, the easy-axis is near the b-axis, unlike previous results for the pure lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 salts where it is closer to the c*-axis. We have also observed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the metallic phase at higher fields where the g-value is shown to be temperature and frequency dependent for field applied along the c*-axis. This behavior indicates the existence of strong pi-d interaction. Our measurements further show the magnetic anisotropy associated with the anions (the D term in the spin Hamiltonian) is |D|~0.11 cm-1.

We have measured the high field magnetoresistence and magnetization of quasi-one- dimensional (Q1D) organic conductor (Per)2Pt(mnt)2 (where Per = perylene and mnt = maleonitriledithiolate), which has a charge density wave (CDW) ground state at zero magnetic field below 8 K. We find that the CDW ground state is suppressed with moderate magnetic fields of order 20 T, as expected from a mean field theory treatment of Pauli effects[W. Dieterich and P. Fulde, Z. Physik 265, 239 - 243 (1973)]. At higher magnetic fields, a new, density wave state with sub-phases is observed in the range 20 to 50 T, which is reminiscent of the cascade of field induced, quantized, spin density wave phases (FISDW) observed in the Bechgaard salts. The new density wave state, which we tenatively identify as a field induced charge density wave state (FICDW), is re-entrant to a low resistance state at even higher fields, of order 50 T and above. Unlike the FISDW ground state, the FICDW state is only weakly orbital, and appears for all directions of magnetic field. Our findings are substantiated by electrical resistivity, magnetization, thermoelectric, and Hall measurements. We discuss our results in light of theoretical work involving magnetic field dependent Q1D CDW ground states in high magnetic fields [D. Zanchi, A. Bjelis, and G. Montambaux, Phys. Rev. B 53, (1996)1240; A. Lebed, JETP Lett. 78,138(2003)].

The charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature in the quasi-one dimensional (Q1D) organic material of (Per)$_2$Au(mnt)$_2$ is relatively low (TCDW = 12 K). The charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature in the quasi-one dimensional (Q1D) organic material of (Per)$_2$Au(mnt)$_2$ is relatively low (TCDW = 12 K). Hence in a mean field BCS model, the CDW state should be completely suppressed in magnetic fields of order 30 - 40 T. To explore this possibility, the magnetoresistance of (Per)$_2$Au(mnt)$_2$ was investigated in magnetic fields to 45 T for 0.5 K < T < 12 K. For fields directed along the Q1D molecular stacking direction, TCDW decreases with field, terminating at about ~ 37 T for temperatures approaching zero. Results for this field orientation are in general agreement with theoretical predictions, including the field dependence of the magnetoresistance and the energy gap, $Δ_{CDW}$. However, for fields tilted away from the stacking direction, orbital effects arise above 15 T that may be related to the return of un-nested Fermi surface sections that develop as the CDW state is suppressed. These findings are consistent with expectations that quasi-one dimensional metallic behavior will return outside the CDW phase boundary.

For Fe8Br8, Ea was measured as 0.73 +/- 0.1 eV, and is discussed in light of the available approximate band structure calculations. Some plausible pathways are indicated based on the crystal structures of both lattices. For Mn12-Acetate, we also measured photoconductivity in the visible range; the conductivity increased by a factor of about eight on increasing the photon energy from 632.8 nm (red) to 488 nm (blue). X-ray irradiation increased the resistivity, but Ea was insensitive to exposure.

Newly acquired access to the high frequency and fields shows experimental ESR results in agreement with the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation, revealing evidence that the transition seen at 20 K is not of conventional spin-Peierls order. A significant change of the spin resonance spectrum in beta'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3 at low temperatures, indicates a transition into a three-dimensional-antiferromagnetic (3D AFM) phase.

The quantum oscillatory effect and superconductivity in a non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene (TCF) structure based organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 are studied. Here the Shubnikov-de Haas effect (SdH) and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) are observed. The oscillation frequency associated with a cylindrical Fermi surface is found to be about 4050 tesla, which is also verified by the tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurement. The upper critical field Hc2 measurement in a tilted magnetic field and the TDO measurement in the mixed state reveal a highly anisotropic superconducting nature in this material. We compared physical properties of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 with typical TCF structure based quasi two-dimensional organic conductors. A notable feature of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 superconductor is a large value of effective cyclotron mass m_c^*=12.4+/1.1 m_e, which is the largest yet found in an organic superconductor. A possible origin of the enhanced effective mass and its relation to the superconductivity are briefly discussed.

In the field range between 36 and 60 T $R_{zz}$ shows a very hysteretic first order phase transition from metallic to an insulating state. This transition does not affect the Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations associated with the two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surface. We argue that this transition originates from inter-plane disorder which gives rise to incoherent transport along the least conducting axis. We conclude that this system becomes a strictly 2D Fermi-liquid at high magnetic fields.

This and the non-metallic behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion for the latter 2D metal.

We report the first investigation of the photo-response of the conductivity of a new class of organic semiconductors based on functionalized pentacene. These materials form high quality single crystals that exhibit a thermally activated resistivity. Unlike pure pentacene, the functionalized derivatives are readily soluble in acetone, and can be evaporated or spin-cast as thin films for potential device applications. The electrical conductivity of the single crystal materials is noticeably sensitive to ambient light changes. The purpose, therefore, of the present study, is to determine the nature of the photo-response in terms of carrier activation vs. heating effects, and also to measure the dependence of the photo-response on photon energy. We describe a new method, involving the temperature dependent photo-response, which allows an unambiguous identification of the signature of heating effects in materials with a thermally activated conductivity. We find strong evidence that the photo-response in the materials investigated is predominantly a highly localized heating mechanism. Wavelength dependent studies of the photo-response reveal resonant features and cut-offs that indicate the photon energy absorption is related to the electronic structure of the material.

We report unexpected features of the transport in the dielectric spin density wave (SDW) phase of the quasi one-dimensional compound (TMTSF)_2PF_6: the resistance exhibits a maximum and a subsequent strong drop as temperature decreases below approximately 2K. The maximum in R(T) is not caused by depinning or Joule heating of the SDW. The characteristic temperature of the R(T) maximum and the scaling behavior of the resistance at different magnetic fields B evidence that the non-monotonic R(T) dependence has an origin different from the one known for the quantum Hall effect region of the phase diagram. We also found that the borderline T_0(B,P) which divides the field induced SDW region of the P-B-T phase diagram into the hysteresis and non-hysteresis domains, terminates in the N=1 sub-phase; the borderline has thus no extension to the SDW N=0 phase.

We have used a low-frequency magneto-thermopower (MTEP) method to probe the high magnetic field ground state behavior of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ along all three principal crystallographic axes at low temperatures. The thermopower tensor coefficients ($S_{xx}, S_{yx}$ and $S_{zz}$) have been measured to 30 T, beyond the anomalous low temperature, field-induced transition at 22.5 T. We find a significant anisotropy in the MTEP signal, and also observe large quantum oscillations associated with the de Haas - van Alphen effect. The anisotropy indicates that the ground state properties are clearly driven by mechanisms that occur along specific directions for the in-plane electronic structure. Both transverse and longitudinal magnetothermopower show asymptotic behavior in field, which can be explained in terms of magnetic breakdown of compensated closed orbits.
