We use a recently developed kinetic model derived from the Dirac equation, in order to study electromagnetic wave propagation in superstrong magnetic fields, such as in magnetars, where relativistic Landau quantization is prominent. The leading contribution to the conductivity tensor in such a plasma is calculated. It is found that the electron Hall current has an anomalous contribution, in the quantum relativistic regime, where the effective particle energy has a significant contribution from the diamagnetic and Zeeman energy. As a result, a new quantum resonance frequency appears, and the dispersion relation for the left- and right-hand polarized modes are strongly modified for long and moderate wavelengths. The implications for magnetar physics are discussed.

The resulting theory is similar in many respects to the equations from the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. However, in the former case, all physics related to particle spin is neglected. In the present paper we compare the pair-production rate in vacuum and plasmas, with and without spin effects, in order to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the spinless approximation. It is found that for modest frequencies of the electromagnetic field, the pair production rate of the Klein-Gordon theory is a good approximation to the Dirac theory, provided the matter density is small enough for Pauli blocking to be neglected, and a factor of two related to the difference in the vacuum energy density is compensated for.

We study the contribution from the electron spin to the ponderomotive force, using a quantum kinetic model including the spin-orbit correction. Specifically, we derive an analytical expression for the ponderomotive force, applicable for electrostatic waves propagating parallel to an external magnetic field. To evaluate the expression, we focus on the case of Langmuir waves and on the case of the spin-resonance wave mode, where the classical and spin contributions to the ponderomotive force are compared. Somewhat surprisingly, dependent on the parameter regime, we find that the spin contribution to the ponderomotive force may dominate for the Langmuir wave, whereas the classical contribution can dominate for the spin resonance mode. Naturally, this does not prevent the opposite case from being the more common one.

In particular, the Langmuir wave dam** is calculated as a function of wavenumber, initial temperature, and initial electric field amplitude. Moreover, the background distribution function loses energy in the process, and we calculate the cooling rate as a function of initial temperature and initial wave amplitude. Finally, we investigate how the relative magnitude of wave dam** and background cooling varies with the initial parameters. In particular, it is found that the relative contribution to the energy loss associated with background cooling decreases slowly with the initial wave amplitude.

As is well-known, for plasmas of high density and modest temperature, the classical kinetic theory needs to be extended. Such extensions can be based on the Schrödinger Hamiltonian, applying a Wigner transform of the density matrix, in which case the Vlasov equation is replaced by the celebrated Wigner-Moyal equation. Extending the treatment to more complicated models, we investigate aspects such as spin dynamics (based on the Pauli Hamiltonian), exchange effects (using the Hartree-Fock approximation), Landau quantization, and quantum relativistic theory. In the relativistic theory we first study cases where the field strength is well beyond Schwingers critical field. Both weakly relativistic theory (gamma factors close to unity) and strongly relativistic theory are investigated, using assumptions that allow for a separation of electron and positron states. Finally, we study the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner (DHW) formalism, which is a fully quantum relativistic theory, allowing for field strengths of the order of the Schwinger critical field or even larger. As a result, the quantum kinetic theory is extended to cover phenomena such as Zitterbewegung and electron-positron pair creation. While the focus of this review is on the quantum kinetic models, we illustrate the theories with various applications throughout the manuscript.

The linear and nonlinear theories of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are studied in a partially degenerate quantum plasma with two-temperature electrons and stationary ions. The initial equilibrium of electrons is assumed to be given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution at finite temperature. By employing the multi-scale asymptotic expansion technique to the one-dimensional Wigner-Moyal and Poisson equations, it is shown that the effects of multi-plasmon resonances lead to a modified complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with a new nonlocal nonlinearity. Besides giving rise to a nonlocal nonlinear term, the wave-particle resonance also modifies the local nonlinear coupling coefficient of the KdV equation. The latter is shown to conserve the number of particles, however, the wave energy decays with time. A careful analysis shows that the two-plasmon resonance is the dominant mechanism for nonlinear Landau dam** of EAWs. An approximate soliton solution of the KdV equation is also obtained, and it is shown that the nonlinear Landau dam** causes the wave amplitude to decay slowly with time compared to the classical theory.

In the electrostatic limit, we present a 3+1-system of four coupled partial differential equations, which are completed by Ampere's law. This electrostatic system is further studied for two different cases. In the first case, we consider linearized wave propagation in plasma accounting for the nonzero vacuum expectation values. We then derive the dispersion relation and compare it with well-known limiting cases. In the second case, we consider Schwinger pair production using the local density approximation to allow for analytical treatment. The dependence of the pair production rate on the perpendicular momentum is investigated and it turns out that the spread of the produced pairs along with perpendicular momentum depends on the strength of the applied electric field.

When the Zeeman energy approaches the characteristic kinetic energy of electrons, Landau quantization becomes important. In the vicinity of magnetars, the Zeeman energy can even be relativistic. We start from the Dirac equation and derive a kinetic equation for electrons, focusing on the phenomenon of Landau quantization in such ultra-strong but constant magnetic fields, neglecting short-scale quantum phenomena. It turns out that the usual relativistic gamma factor of the Vlasov equation is replaced by an energy operator, depending on the spin state, and also containing momentum derivatives. Furthermore, we show that the energy eigenstates in a magnetic field can be computed as eigenfunctions of this operator. The dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in a plasma is computed, and the significance of our results is discussed.

Nonlinear solitary solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson set of equations are studied in order to investigate their stability by employing a fully-kinetic simulation approach. The study is carried out in the ion-acoustic regime for a collisionless, electrostatic and Maxwellian electron-ion plasma. The trapped population of electrons is modeled based on well-known Schamel distribution function. Head-on mutual collisions of nonlinear solutions are performed in order to examine their collisional stability. The findings include three major aspects: (I) These nonlinear solutions are found to be divided into three categories based on their Mach numbers, i.e. stable, semi-stable and unstable. Semi-stable solutions indicates a smooth transition from stable to unstable solutions for increasing Mach number. (II) The stability of solutions is traced back to a condition imposed on averaged velocities, i.e. net neutrality. It is shown that a bipolar structure is produced in the flux of electrons, early in the temporal evolution. This bipolar structure acts as the seed of the net-neutrality instability, which tips off the energy balance of nonlinear solution during collisions. As the Mach number increases, the amplitude of bipolar structure grows and results in a stronger instability. (III) It is established that during mutual collisions, a merging process of electron holes can happen to a variety of degrees, based on their velocity characteristics. Specifically, the number of rotations of electron holes around each other (in the merging phase) varies. Furthermore, it is observed that in case of a non-integer number of rotations, two electron holes exchange their phase space cores.

This has allowed us to make a general comparison with a much used hydrodynamic expression for exchange effects. It is found that the hydrodynamic expression gives a useful approximation when the phase velocity is roughly a factor $2.5$ larger than the Fermi velocity. For low phase velocities, as for ion-acoustic waves, wave-particle interaction leads to a strong enhancement of the exchange correction and the hydrodynamic results is smaller by an order of magnitude.

The Sagdeev pseudo-potential approach has been employed extensively in theoretical studies to determine large-amplitude (fully) nonlinear solutions in a variety of multi-species plasmas. Although these solutions are repeatedly considered as solitary waves (and even solitons), their temporal stability has never been proven. In this paper, a numerical study of the Vlasov-Poisson system is made to follow their temporal evolution in the presence of numerical noise and thereby test their long-time propagation stability. Considering the ion-acoustic regime, both constituents of the plasma, i.e. electrons and ions are treated following their distribution functions in these set of fully kinetic simulations. The findings reveal that the stability of Sagdeev solution depends on a combination of two parameters, i.e. velocity and trap** parameter. It is shown that there exists a critical value of trap** parameter for both fast and slow solutions which separates the stable from unstable solutions. In case of stable solutions, it is shown that these nonlinear structures can propagate for long periods, which confirms their status as solitary waves. Stable solutions are reported for both Maxwellian and Kappa distribution functions. For unstable solutions, it is demonstrated that the instability causes the Sagdeev solution to decay by emitting ion-acoustic wave-packets on its propagation trail. The instability is shown to take place in a large range of velocity and even for Sagdeev solutions with velocity much higher than ion sound speed. Besides, in order to validate our simulation code two precautionary measures are taken. Firstly, the well-known effect of the ion dynamics on a stationary electron hole solution is presented as a benchmarking test of the approach. Secondly, In order to verify the numerical accuracy of the simulations, the conservation of energy and entropy are presented.

However, for plasma densities approaching the critical density wakefield generation is suppressed, and instead the EM-pulse undergoes nonlinear self-modulation. In this article we have studied the transition from the wakefield generation to formation of quasi-solitons as the plasma density is increased. For this purpose we have applied a one dimensional (1D) relativistic cold fluid model, which has also been compared with particle-in-cell simulations. A key result is that the energy loss of the EM-pulse due to wakefield generation has its maximum for a plasma density of the order 10 percent of the critical density, but that wakefield generation is sharply suppressed when the density is increased further.

In this review we give an overview of recent work on quantum kinetic theories of plasmas. We focus, in particular, on the case where the electrons are fully degenerate. For such systems, perturbation methods using the distribution function can be problematic. Instead we present a model that considers the dynamics of the Fermi surface. The advantage of this model is that, even though the value of the distribution function can be greatly perturbed outside the equilibrium Fermi surface, deformation of Fermi surface is small up very large amplitudes. Next, we investigate the short-scale dynamics for which the Wigner-Moyal equation replaces the Vlasov equation. In particular, we study wave-particle interaction, and deduce that new types of wave dam** can occur due to the simultaneous absorption (or emission) of multiple wave quanta. Finally, we consider exchange effects within a quantum kinetic formalism to find a model more accurate than ones using exchange potentials from density functional theory. We deduce the exchange corrections to the dispersion relations for Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves. Comparing with results based on exchange potentials deduced from density functional theory we find that the latter models are reasonably accurate for Langmuir waves, but rather inaccurate for ion acoustic waves.

We study the nonlinear wave modulation of Langmuir waves (LWs) in a fully degenerate plasma. Using the Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to the Poisson equation and the multiple scale expansion technique, a modified nonlocal nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is derived which governs the evolution of LW envelopes in degenerate plasmas. The nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation appears due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon resonances, i.e., resonances induced by the simultaneous particle absorption of multiple wave quanta. We focus on the regime where the resonant velocity of electrons is larger than the Fermi velocity and thereby the linear Landau dam** is forbidden. As a result, the nonlinear wave-particle resonances due to the group velocity and multi-plasmon processes are the dominant mechanisms for wave-particle interaction. It is found that in contrast to classical or semiclassical plasmas, the group velocity resonance does not necessarily give rise the wave dam** in the strong quantum regime where $ \hbar k\sim mv_{F}$ with $\hbar$ denoting the reduced Planck's constant, $m$ the electron mass and $v_F$ the Fermi velocity, however, the three-plasmon process plays a dominant role in the nonlinear Landau dam** of wave envelopes. In this regime, the decay rate of the wave amplitude is also found to be higher compared to that in the modest quantum regime where the multi-plasmon effects are forbidden.

For short wavelengths, it is well known that the linearized Wigner-Moyal equation predicts wave dam** due to wave-particle interaction, where the resonant velocity shifted from the phase velocity by a velocity $v_q = \hbar k/2m$. Here $\hbar$ is the reduced Planck constant, $k$ is the wavenumber and $m$ is the electron mass. Going beyond linear theory, we find additional resonances with velocity shifts $n v_q$, $n = 2, 3, \ldots$, giving rise to a new wave-dam** mechanism that we term \emph{multi-plasmon dam**}, as it can be seen as the simultaneous absorption (or emission) of multiple plasmon quanta. Naturally this wave dam** is not present in classical plasmas. For a temperature well below the Fermi temperature, if the linear ($n = 1$) resonant velocity is outside the Fermi sphere, the number of linearly resonant particles is exponentially small, while the multi-plasmon resonances can be located in the bulk of the distribution. We derive sets of evolution equations for the case of two-plasmon and three-plasmon resonances for Langmuir waves in the simplest case of a fully degenerate plasma. By solving these equations numerically for a range of wave-numbers we find the corresponding dam** rates, and we compare them to results from linear theory to estimate the applicability. Finally, we discuss the effects due to a finite temperature.

This system is studied numerically, with a particular focus on the transition from the classical to the quantum regime. In the quantum regime several new features are found. This includes a quantum modified bounce frequency, and the discovery that bounce-like amplitude oscillations can take place even in the absence of trapped particles. The implications of our results are discussed.

For the case of ion-acoustic waves we have calculated the exchange correction both to the dam** rate and the real part of the frequency. For Langmuir waves the frequency shift due to exchange effects is found. Our results are compared with the frequency shifts deduced from commonly used exchange potentials which are computed from density functional theory.

Exchange effects play an important role in determining the equilibrium properties of dense matter systems, as well as for magnetic phenomena. There exists an extensive literature concerning, e.g., the effects of exchange interactions on the equation of state of dense matter. Here, a generalization of the Vlasov equation to include exchange effects is presented allowing for electromagnetic mean fields, thus incorporating some of the dynamic effects due to the exchange interactions. Treating the exchange term perturbatively, the correction to classical Langmuir waves in plasmas is found, and the results are compared with previous work. It is noted that the relative importance of exchange effects scales similarly with density and temperature as particle dispersive effects, but that the overall magnitude is sensitive to the details of the specific problem. The implications of our results are discussed.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in an ionized plasma is considered with a focus on the generation of magnetic field via the Biermann battery mechanisms. The problem is studied through direct numerical simulations of two counter-directed flows in 2D geometry. The simulations demonstrate the formation of eddies and their further interaction resulting in a large single vortex. At early stages, the generated magnetic field evolves due to the baroclinic term in the induction equation, revealing significantly different structures from the vorticity field, despite the fact that magnetic field and vorticity obey identical equations. At later times, the magnetic field exhibits complex behavior and continues to grow even after a hydrodynamic vortex has developed.

The theory for nonlinear three-wave interaction in magnetized plasmas is reconsidered using quantum hydrodynamics. The general coupling coefficients are calculated for a generalized Bohm de Broglie term. It is found that the Manley-Rowe relations are fulfilled only if the form of the particle dispersive term coincides with the standard expression. The implications of our results are discussed.

Here we consider the influence on the electron spin in the MHD regime. Recently developed models which include spin-velocity correlations are taken as a starting point. A theoretical argument is presented, suggesting that in the MHD regime a single fluid electron model with spin correlations is equivalent to a model with spin-up and spin-down electrons constituting different fluids, but where the spin-velocity correlations are omitted. Three wave interaction of 2 shear Alfven waves and a compressional Alfven wave is then taken as a model problem to evaluate the asserted equivalence. The theoretical argument turns out to be supported, as the predictions of the two models agree completely. Furthermore, the three wave coupling coefficients obey the Manley-Rowe relations, which give further support to the soundness of the models and the validity of the assumptions made in the derivation. Finally we point out that the proposed two-fluid model can be incorporated in standard Particle-In-Cell schemes with only minor modifications.

We consider wakefield generation in plasmas by electromagnetic pulses propagating perpendicular to a strong magnetic field, in the regime where the electron cyclotron frequency is equal to or larger than the plasma frequency. PIC-simulations reveal that for moderate magnetic field strengths previous results are re-produced, and the wakefield wavenumber spectrum has a clear peak at the inverse skin depth. However, when the cyclotron frequency is significantly larger than the plasma frequency, the wakefield spectrum becomes broad-band, and simultaneously the loss rate of the driving pulse is much enhanced. A set of equations for the scalar and vector potentials reproducing these results are derived, using only the assumption of a weakly nonlinear interaction.

The excitation of electrostatic wakefields in a magnetized spin quantum plasma by the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force (CPF and SPF, respectively) due to whistler waves is reported. The nonlinear dynamics of the whistlers and the wakefields is shown to be governed by a coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and driven Boussinesq-like equations. It is found that the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential introduces two characteristic length scales, which lead to the excitation of multiple wakefields in a strongly magnetized dense plasma (with a typical magnetic field strength $B_{0}\gtrsim10^{9}$ T and particle density $n_{0}\gtrsim10^{36}$ m$^{-3}$), where the SPF strongly dominates over the CPF. In other regimes, namely $B_{0}\lesssim10^{8}$ T and $\ n_{0}\lesssim10^{35}$ m$^{-3}$, where the SPF is comparable to the CPF, a plasma wakefield can also be excited self-consistently with one characteristic length scale. Numerical results reveal that the wakefield amplitude is enhanced by the quantum tunneling effect, however it is lowered by the external magnetic field. Under appropriate conditions, the wakefields can maintain high coherence over multiple plasma wavelengths and thereby accelerate electrons to extremely high energies. The results could be useful for particle acceleration at short scales, i.e. at nano- and micrometer scales, in magnetized dense plasmas where the driver is the whistler wave instead of a laser or a particle beam.

The nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic (EM) electron-cyclotron waves (whistlers) along an external magnetic field, and their modulation by electrostatic small but finite amplitude ion-acoustic density perturbations are investigated in a uniform quantum plasma with intrinsic spin of electrons. The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled modes of wave propagation is shown to be governed by a modified set of nonlinear Schrödinger-Boussinesq-like equations which admit exact solutions in form of stationary localized envelopes. Numerical simulation reveals the existence of large-scale density fluctuations that are self-consistently created by the localized whistlers in a strongly magnetized high density plasma. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and the value of its growth rate are obtained. Possible applications of our results, e.g., in strongly magnetized dense plasmas and in the next generation laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments are discussed.

The concept of phase space distribution functions and their evolution is used in the case of en enlarged phase space. In particular, we include the intrinsic spin of particles and present a quantum kinetic evolution equation for a scalar quasi-distribution function. In contrast to the proper Wigner transformation technique, for which we expect the corresponding quasi-distribution function to be a complex matrix, we introduce a spin projection operator for the density matrix in order to obtain the aforementioned scalar quasi-distribution function. There is a close correspondence between this projection operator and the Husimi (or Q) function used extensively in quantum optics. Such a function is based on a Gaussian smearing of a Wigner function, giving a positive definite distribution function. Thus, our approach gives a Wigner-Husimi quasi-distribution function in extended phase space, for which the reduced distribution function on the Bloch sphere is strictly positive. We also discuss the gauge issue and the fluid moment hierarchy based on such a quantum kinetic theory.

By using a 2D quantum hydrodynamic model and the method of multiple scales, a new set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations is derived which governs the slow modulation of the 2D QIAW packets. The oblique modulational instability (MI) is then studied by means of a corresponding nonlinear Schroedinger equation derived from the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations. It is shown that the quantum parameter H (proportional to $\hbar$), associated with the Bohm potential, shifts the MI domains around the $kθ$-plane, where $k$ is the carrier wave number and $θ$ is the angle of modulation. In particular, the ion-acoustic wave (IAW), previously known to be stable under parallel modulation in classical plasmas, is shown to be unstable in quantum plasmas. The growth rate of the MI is found to be quenched by the obliqueness of modulation. The modulation of 2D QIAW packets along $\mathbf{k}$ is shown to be described by a set of Davey-Stewartson-like equations. The latter can be studied for the 2D wave collapse in dense plasmas. The predicted results, which could be important to look for stable wave propagation in laboratory experiments as well as in dense astrophysical plasmas, thus generalize the theory of MI of IAW propagations both in classical and quantum electron-ion plasmas.
