Quantum photon effects in vacuum provide an interesting setting to test quantum electrodynamics, serving as a source for predictions about physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we investigate these effects by calculating the one-loop Euler-Heisenberg-like effective action within a Lorentz-violating scalar quantum electrodynamics framework. In both CPT-even and CPT-odd scenarios, we obtain the exact result in all orders of the stress tensor $F_{μν}$ and evaluate explicitly the lower orders of this effective action. We identify the quantum effects coming from Lorentz violation in an explicitly gauge invariant way. Nonlinear Lorentz-violating contributions that may affect photon-photon scattering are explicitly evaluated.

This paper investigates certain aspects of the CPT-odd photon sector of the minimal Standard Model Extension (SME) in the presence of a perfectly conducting plate (perfect mirror). The considered sector is described by Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) electrodynamics, where Lorentz violation is due to the presence of a single background vector denoted as $\left(k_{AF}\right)^μ$, which we treat perturbatively up to second order. Specifically, we derive the modified propagator for the electromagnetic field due to the presence of the perfect mirror, and we study the corresponding interaction between the mirror and a stationary point-like charge. Our results reveal that when the charge is positioned near the mirror, a spontaneous torque emerges, which is a unique effect of Lorentz symmetry breaking. Additionally, we demonstrate that the image method for this theory is applicable when the background vector has only the component perpendicular to the mirror.

In some cases, the class of metamaterials that may be useful for this observation has a Klein instead of a Minkowski signature. Thus, confirmation of this effect in those materials requires more careful analysis. In this paper, we use the path integral formulation of Quantum Field Theory to investigate the analogous to the Unruh effect in Kleinian geometry. We calculate the analogous of the Unruh temperature for a scalar theory, provided we restrict the action in a convenient subspace of the Kleinian spacetime. As a consequence, we obtain the diamond temperature for a static observer with a finite lifetime. The result suggest metamaterials as a possible system to observe diamond regions.

Investigating quantum effects arising from high loops in perturbation theory is crucial for the physical applications of any quantum field theory. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the two-loop renormalization of CPT-even Lorentz-violating scalar electrodynamics at the first order in the background vectors. We provide results for the self-energies of the photon and scalar field, as well as for the three-point function associated with the scalar-scalar-photon vertex, ensuring a thorough examination of the quantum effects. The calculations satisfy the ward identities, demonstrating their consistency. Computational tools were employed to carry out the calculations, and we provide additional details in the Supplemental Material for interested readers. Our contribution presents, for the first time, a two-loop calculation within the framework of the Lorentz-violating Standard Model Extension.

Single layers of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as WSe$_2$ have gathered increasing attention due to their intense electron-hole interactions, being considered promising candidates for develo** novel optical applications. Within the few-layer regime, these systems become highly sensitive to the surrounding environment, enabling the possibility of using a proper substrate to tune desired aspects of these atomically-thin semiconductors. In this scenario, the dielectric environment provided by the substrates exerts significant influence on electronic and optical properties of these layered materials, affecting the electronic band-gap and the exciton binding energy. However, the corresponding effect on the luminescence of transition metal dichalcogenides is still under discussion. To elucidate these impacts, we used a broad set of materials as substrates for single-layers of WSe$_2$, enabling the observation of these effects over a wide range of electrical permittivities. Our results demonstrate that an increasing permittivity induces a systematic red-shift of the optical band-gap of WSe$_2$, intrinsically related to a considerable reduction of the luminescence intensity. Moreover, we annealed the samples to ensure a tight coupling between WSe$_2$and its substrates, reducing the effect of undesired adsorbates trapped in the interface. Ultimately, our findings reveal how critical the annealing temperature can be, indicating that above a certain threshold, the heating treatment can induce adverse impacts on the luminescence. Furthermore, our conclusions highlight the influence the dielectric properties of the substrate have on the luminescence of WSe$_2$, showing that a low electrical permittivity favours preserving the native properties of the adjacent monolayer

In this paper, we present the first empirical study of static code analysis tools for detecting vulnerabilities in Node.js code. To conduct a comprehensive tool evaluation, we created the largest known curated dataset of Node.js code vulnerabilities. We characterized and annotated a set of 957 vulnerabilities by analyzing information contained in npm advisory reports. We tested nine different tools and found that many important vulnerabilities appearing in the OWASP Top-10 are not detected by any tool. The three best performing tools combined only detect up to 57.6% of all vulnerabilities in the dataset, but at a very low precision of 0.11%. Our curated dataset offers a new benchmark to help characterize existing Node.js code vulnerabilities and foster the development of better vulnerability detection tools for Node.js code.

The renormalization of quantum field theories usually assumes Lorentz and gauge symmetries, besides the general restrictions imposed by unitarity and causality. However, the set of renormalizable theories can be enlarged by relaxing some of these assumptions. In this work, we consider the particular case of a CPT-preserving but Lorentz-breaking extension of scalar QED. For this theory, we calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the three- and four-point scalar-vector vertex functions, at the lowest order in the Lorentz violation parameters; and we explicitly verify that the resulting low-energy effective action is compatible with the usual gauge invariance requirements. With these results, we complete the one-loop renormalization of the model at the leading order in the Lorentz-violating parameters.

WebAssembly is a new binary instruction format that allows targeted compiled code written in high-level languages to be executed with near-native speed by the browser's JavaScript engine. However, given that WebAssembly binaries can be compiled from unsafe languages like C/C++, classical code vulnerabilities such as buffer overflows or format strings can be transferred over from the original programs down to the cross-compiled binaries. As a result, this possibility of incorporating vulnerabilities in WebAssembly modules has widened the attack surface of modern web applications. This paper presents Wasmati, a static analysis tool for finding security vulnerabilities in WebAssembly binaries. It is based on the generation of a code property graph (CPG), a program representation previously adopted for detecting vulnerabilities in various languages but hitherto unapplied to WebAssembly. We formalize the definition of CPG for WebAssembly, introduce techniques to generate CPG for complex WebAssembly, and present four different query specification languages for finding vulnerabilities by traversing a program's CPG. We implemented ten queries capturing different vulnerability types and extensively tested Wasmati on four heterogeneous datasets. We show that Wasmati can scale the generation of CPGs for large real-world applications and can efficiently find vulnerabilities for all our query types. We have also tested our tool on WebAssembly binaries collected in the wild and identified several potential vulnerabilities, some of which we have manually confirmed to exist unless the enclosing application properly sanitizes the interaction with such affected binaries.

We study a cosmological model with a fermionic field which can be interpreted as a source of dark energy in the universe. Two different approaches were considered, the first one with a massless fermionic field represented by a standard wave-function and the second one where a massive field is a Grassmann variable. {The first case naturally reduces to a XCDM model with a constant equation of state parameter, while the last case reproduces a $w(z)$CDM model for a massive field}, and in the massless limit, the intrinsic grassmannian property of the field leads always to a vacuum equation of state parameter, irrespective the specific form of the potential. Both cases leads to a dark energy contribution of the fermionic sector. The models are totally compatible with recent cosmological data from Supernovae, BAO and Hubble parameter measurements. A brief study of linear evolution of density perturbations shows that some of the small scale problems related to standard model can be at least alleviated.

Differential privacy is the state-of-the-art formal definition for data release under strong privacy guarantees. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed in the literature for releasing the output of numeric queries (e.g., the Laplace mechanism and smooth sensitivity mechanism). Those mechanisms guarantee differential privacy by adding noise to the true query's output. The amount of noise added is calibrated by the notions of global sensitivity and local sensitivity of the query that measure the impact of the addition or removal of an individual on the query's output. Mechanisms that use local sensitivity add less noise and, consequently, have a more accurate answer. However, although there has been some work on generic mechanisms for releasing the output of non-numeric queries using global sensitivity (e.g., the Exponential mechanism), the literature lacks generic mechanisms for releasing the output of non-numeric queries using local sensitivity to reduce the noise in the query's output. In this work, we remedy this shortcoming and present the local dampening mechanism. We adapt the notion of local sensitivity for the non-numeric setting and leverage it to design a generic non-numeric mechanism. We provide theoretical comparisons to the exponential mechanism and show under which conditions the local dampening mechanism is more accurate than the exponential mechanism. We illustrate the effectiveness of the local dampening mechanism by applying it to three diverse problems: (i) percentile selection problem. We report the p-th element in the database; (ii) Influential node analysis. Given an influence metric, we release the top-k most influential nodes while preserving the privacy of the relationship between nodes in the network; (iii) Decision tree induction. We provide a private adaptation to the ID3 algorithm to build decision trees from a given tabular dataset.

The metastable dark energy scenario is revisited by assuming that the current false vacuum energy density is the remnant from a primeval inflationary stage. The zero temperature scalar field potential is here described by an even power series up to order six which depends on 3 free parameters: the mass of the scalar field ($m$), the dimensionless ($λ$) specifying the standard self-interaction term, and a free cutoff mass scale ($M$) quantifying all possible deviations from the degenerate false vacuum state. The current $Λ$CDM model is a consequence of the very long decay time of the false vacuum which although finite is much greater than the current age of the Universe. This result remains valid for arbitrary combinations of the $m/M$ ratio which can analytically be determined in the thin-wall approximation and numerically calculated outside this limit. Unlike many claims in the literature the vacuum dominance may be temporary. The finiteness of the decay time suggests that the ultimate stage of the observed Universe in such a scenario will not be driven by a de Sitter type cosmology.

Today, the near-Earth space is facing a paradigm change as the number of new spacecraft is literally sky-rocketing. Increasing numbers of small satellites threaten the sustainable use of space, as without removal, space debris will eventually make certain critical orbits unusable. A central factor affecting small spacecraft health and leading to debris is the radiation environment, which is unpredictable due to an incomplete understanding of the near-Earth radiation environment itself and its variability driven by the solar wind and outer magnetosphere. This paper presents the FORESAIL-1 nanosatellite mission, having two scientific and one technological objectives. The first scientific objective is to measure the energy and flux of energetic particle loss to the atmosphere with a representative energy and pitch angle resolution over a wide range of magnetic local times. To pave the way to novel model - in situ data comparisons, we also show preliminary results on precipitating electron fluxes obtained with the new global hybrid-Vlasov simulation Vlasiator. The second scientific objective of the FORESAIL-1 mission is to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) of solar origin. The solar ENA flux has the potential to contribute importantly to the knowledge of solar eruption energy budget estimations. The technological objective is to demonstrate a satellite de-orbiting technology, and for the first time, make an orbit manoeuvre with a propellantless nanosatellite. FORESAIL-1 will demonstrate the potential for nanosatellites to make important scientific contributions as well as promote the sustainable utilisation of space by using a cost-efficient de-orbiting technology.

This paper reviews Vlasov-based numerical methods used to model plasma in space physics and astrophysics. Plasma consists of collectively behaving charged particles that form the major part of baryonic matter in the Universe. Many concepts ranging from our own planetary environment to the Solar system and beyond can be understood in terms of kinetic plasma physics, represented by the Vlasov equation. We introduce the physical basis for the Vlasov system, and then outline the associated numerical methods that are typically used. A particular application of the Vlasov system is Vlasiator, the world's first global hybrid-Vlasov simulation for the Earth's magnetic domain, the magnetosphere. We introduce the design strategies for Vlasiator and outline its numerical concepts ranging from solvers to coupling schemes. We review Vlasiator's parallelisation methods and introduce the used high-performance computing (HPC) techniques. A short review of verification, validation and physical results is included. The purpose of the paper is to present the Vlasov system and introduce an example implementation, and to illustrate that even with massive computational challenges, an accurate description of physics can be rewarding in itself and significantly advance our understanding. Upcoming supercomputing resources are making similar efforts feasible in other fields as well, making our design options relevant for others facing similar challenges.

Interestingly, this naturally induces a Lorentz-violating mass term in the classical action. We study physical consistency aspects of the model both at classical and quantum levels.

Abstract:
We calculate higher-order quantum contributions in different Lorentz-violating parameters to the gauge sector of the extended QED. As a result of this one-loop calculation, some terms which do not produce first-order corrections, contribute with nontrivial gauge-invariant second-order quantum inductions.

First, we consider a Yukawa-like theory and, then, some examples of Lorentz-violating extensions of scalar QED. We observed, for the extended QED models, that the resulting effective potential converges to the known result in the limit in which Lorentz-symmetry is restored. Besides, the one-loop corrections to the effective potential in all the cases we studied depend on the background tensors responsible for the Lorentz symmetry violation. This have consequences in physical quantities like, for example, in the induced mass due to Coleman-Weinberg mechanism.

In this paper, we investigate a CPT-even model with a Lorentz-violating mass term. Such kind of models may present very interesting features like superluminal modes of propagation or even instantaneous long-range interactions. The mass term we investigate can be induced at classical or quantum level in a scenario with spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in a gauge-Higgs model without Lorentz symmetry. We analyze the physical consistency of the model by studying the poles of the propagator. By using the Noether Dualization Method (NDM), we obtain a gauge invariant dual theory for this model. The physical equivalence between the two models is investigated and a general relation between the two propagators is obtained.

Abstract:
We verify that quadratic divergences stemming from gravitational corrections to QED which have been conjectured to lead to asymptotic freedom near Planck scale are arbitrary (regularization dependent) and compatible with zero. Moreover we explicitly show that such arbitrary term contributes to the beta function of QED in a gauge dependent way in the gravitational sector.

Abstract:
We show in a diagrammatic and regularization independent analysis that the quadratic contribu- tion to the beta function which has been conjectured to render quantum electrodynamics asymp- totically free near the Planck scale has its origin in a surface term. Such surface term is intrinsically arbitrarily valued and it is argued to vanish in a consistent treatment of the model.

It has been successfully tested in several instances in the literature, more specifically in those where Dimensional Regularization does not apply. In the present contribution we extend the method to handle infrared divergences as well. We show that the essential steps which rendered Implicit Regularization adequate in the case of ultraviolet divergences have their counterpart for infrared ones. Moreover we show that a new scale appears, typically an infrared scale which is completely independent of the ultraviolet one. Examples are given.

The ultraviolet content of such amplitudes have a simple structure and its separation permits the identification of all the potential symmetry violating terms, the surface terms. Moreover, we develop a technique for the calculation of an important kind of finite multiloop integral which seems particularly convenient to use Feynman parametrization. Finally, we discuss the Implicit Regularization of infrared divergent amplitudes, showing with an example how it can be dealt with an analogous procedure in the coordinate space.

Abstract:
We show that to n loop order the divergent content of a Feynman amplitude is spanned by a set of basic (logarithmically divergent) integrals which need not be evaluated. Only the coefficients of the basic divergent integrals are necessary to determine renormalization group functions. Relations between these coefficients of different loop orders are derived.

We study the two point-function for the scalar mesons $σ, κ, f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ as diquak-antidiquark states. We also study the decays of these mesons into $ππ$, $Kπ$ and $K\bar{K}$. We found that the couplings are consistent with existing experimental data, pointing in favor of the four-quark structure for the light scalar mesons.

We consider 2+1 dimensional noncommutative models of scalar and fermionic fields coupled to the Chern-Simons field. We show that, at least up to one loop, the model containing only a fermionic field in the fundamental representation minimally coupled to the Chern-Simons field is consistent in the sense that there are no nonintegrable infrared divergences. By contrast, dangerous infrared divergences occur if the fermion field belongs to the adjoint representation or if the coupling of scalar matter is considered instead. The superfield formulation of the supersymmetric Chern-Simons model is also analyzed and shown to be free of nonintegrable infrared singularities and actually finite if the matter field belongs to the fundamental representation of the supergauge group. In the case of the adjoint representation this only happens in a particular gauge.
