2D profiles of electron density and neutral temperature are inferred from multi-delay Coherence Imaging Spectroscopy data of divertor plasmas using a non-linear inversion technique. The inference is based on imaging the spectral line-broadening of Balmer lines and can differentiate between the Doppler and Stark broadening components by measuring the fringe contrast at multiple interferometric delays simultaneously. The model has been applied to images generated from simulated density profiles to evaluate its performance. Typical mean absolute errors of 30 percent are achieved, which are consistent with Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation accounting for noise, uncertainties in the calibrations, and in the model inputs. The analysis has been tested on experimental data from the MAST-U Super-X divertor, where it infers typical electron densities of 2-3 $10^{19}$ m$^{-3}$ and neutral temperatures of 0-2 eV during beam-heated L-mode discharges. The results are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the other available diagnostics.

The development of nanoscale nonlinear elements in photonic integrated circuits is hindered by the physical limits to the nonlinear optical response of dielectrics, which requires that the interacting waves propagate in transparent volumes for distances much longer than their wavelength. Here we present experimental evidence that optical nonlinearities in doped semiconductors are due to free-electron and their efficiency could exceed by several orders of magnitude that of conventional dielectric nonlinearities. Our experimental findings are supported by comprehensive computational results based on the hydrodynamic modeling, which naturally includes nonlocal effects, of the free-electron dynamics in heavily doped semiconductors. By studying third-harmonic generation from plasmonic nanoantenna arrays made out of heavily n-doped InGaAs with increasing levels of free-carrier density, we discriminate between hydrodynamic and dielectric nonlinearities. As a result, the value of maximum nonlinear efficiency as well as its spectral location can now be controlled by tuning the do** level. Having employed the common material platform InGaAs/InP that supports integrated waveguides, our findings pave the way for future exploitation of plasmonic nonlinearities in all-semiconductor photonic integrated circuits.

Close to the continuum limit, lattice QCD with mass-degenerate Wilson quarks can be described by Symanzik's effective continuum action, which contains the dimension 5 operator, $m\,{\rm tr}(F_{μν}F_{μν})$. Its effect can be eliminated by an O($am_{\rm q}$) rescaling of the bare lattice coupling constant. Until recently, the corresponding improvement coefficient, $b_{\rm g}$, was only known perturbatively to 1-loop order and an estimate of the remaining uncertainty is the dominant systematic error in the ALPHA collaboration's recent determination of $α_s(m_Z)$ with the decoupling method. To remove this error we have determined $b_{\rm g}$ non-perturbatively for the corresponding parameter range. We here briefly review improvement conditions for $b_{\rm g}$, perform a perturbative test and report on our non-perturbative results for $b_{\rm g}$.

We derive suitable improvement conditions in the chiral limit and in a finite space-time volume and evaluate these for different gluonic observables, both with and without the gradient flow. The choice of $β$-values and the line of constant physics are motivated by the ALPHA collaboration's decoupling strategy to determine $α_s(m_Z)$. However, the improvement conditions and some insight into systematic effects may prove useful in other contexts, too.

We study the Renormalisation Group (RG) running of the non-singlet tensor operator, for $N_\mathrm{\scriptstyle f}=3$ QCD with Wilson fermions in a mixed action setup, with standard Schrödinger Functional (SF) boundary conditions for sea quarks and chirally rotated Schrödinger Functional ($χ$SF) boundary conditions for valence quarks. Based on a recursive finite-size scaling technique we compute non-perturbatively the tensor step-scaling function for an energy range between a hadronic scale and an electroweak scale, above which perturbation theory may be safely applied. Our result is expressed as the RG-running factor $T^{\mathrm{RGI}}/[ T(μ_{\mathrm{had}})]_{\scriptstyle \rm R}$, where the numerator is the scale independent (Renormalisation Group Invariant - RGI) tensor operator and the denominator is its renormalised counterpart at a hadronic scale $μ_{\mathrm{had}} = 233(8)$~MeV in a given scheme. We determine the step-scaling function in four distinct renormalisation schemes. We also compute the renormalisation parameters of these schemes at $μ_{\mathrm{had}}$ which, combined with the RG-running factor, gives the scheme-independent quantity $Z^{\mathrm{RGI}}_{\mathrm T}(g_0^2)$ in four schemes and for a range of bare gauge couplings in which large volume hadronic matrix element simulations are performed by the CLS consortium in $N_\mathrm{\scriptstyle f}=2+1$ QCD. All four results are compatible and also agree with a recent determination based on a unitary setup for Wilson quarks with Schrödinger Functional boundary conditions~arXiv:2309.04314 . This provides a strong universality test.

Exhausting the power from the hot fusion core to the plasma facing components is one of fusion's biggest challenges. The MAST Upgrade tokamak uniquely integrates strong containment of neutrals within the exhaust area (divertor), away from the hot fusion core, with extreme divertor sha**. This enables improving power exhaust through long-legged divertors with a high magnetic field gradient (total flux expansion). This study shows compelling MAST-U results for the improved power exhaust of long-legged, totally flux expanded, divertors, without any adverse impact to the hot fusion core, representing a significant step forward in addressing the fusion power exhaust challenge. Our comparative analysis of various divertor shapes demonstrates that even modest adjustments can significantly enhance exhaust performance while preserving core plasma performance. Through novel analysis, we attribute the reductions in particle and power loads to the expanded plasma-neutral interaction volume within long-legged divertors, in agreement with reduced models and simulation results. Strong segregation of neutrals enables the benefits of long-legged, totally flux expanded, divertors to be retrieved. Our study underscores the critical role of strategic divertor sha** in enhancing exhaust performance, stability and core-edge integration; signifying an essential advancement towards sustainable fusion energy.

This experimental study presents an in-depth investigation of the performance of the MAST-U Super-X divertor during NBI-heated operation (up to 2.5 MW) focussing on volumetric ion sources and sinks as well as power losses during detachment.
The particle balance and power loss analysis revealed the crucial role of Molecular Activated Recombination and Dissociation (MAR and MAD) ion sinks in divertor particle and power balance, which remain pronounced in the change from ohmic to higher power (NBI heated) L-mode conditions. The importance of MAR and MAD remains with double the absorbed NBI heating. MAD results in significant power dissipation (up to $\sim 20 \%$ of $P_{SOL}$), mostly in the cold ($T_e < 5$ eV) detached region. Theoretical and experimental evidence is found for the potential contribution of $D^-$ to MAR and MAD, which warrants further study.
These results suggest that MAR and MAD can be relevant in higher power conditions than the ohmic conditions studied previously. Post-processing reactor-scale simulations shows that MAR and MAD can play a significant role in divertor physics and synthetic diagnostic signals of reactor-scale devices, which are currently underestimated in exhaust simulations. This raises implications for the accuracy of reactor-scale divertor simulations of particularly tightly baffled (alternative) divertor configurations.

Efficient supercontinuum (SC) generation featuring high spectral intensity across a large bandwidth requires high peak powers of several megawatt from pulsed lasers. Under these conditions and at multi-kilohertz (kHz) repetition rates, the SC generated in most materials is unstable due to thermal effects. In this work, we leverage the superior dispersion properties of water to maximize the spectral width of the SC, while avoiding stability issues due to thermal loading by means of a constant laminar flow of the liquid. This flow is controlled by a differential pressure scheme that allows to precisely adjust the fluid velocity to an optimum value for maximum stability of the SC. This approach is successfully implemented for repetition rates of 50 kHz and 100 kHz and two different pump wavelengths in the visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) spectral region with stability of the SC signal only limited by the driving pulses. The resulting water SC spans more than one octave covering the VIS to NIR range. Compared to established materials, such as yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and sapphire, the spectral bandwidth is increased by 60 % and 40 % respectively. Our scheme has the potential to be implemented with other liquids such as bromine or carbon disulfide (CS2), which promise even wider broadening and operation up to the mid-infrared.

As a first application we compute the flavor non-singlet mesonic screening masses in a wide range of temperature, from $T\sim 1 $ GeV up to $\sim 160 $ GeV with three flavors in the chiral limit of QCD. Our results show very interesting features of the screening spectrum at very high temperatures. On one hand the mass splitting between the vector and the pseudoscalar screening masses is clearly visible up to the electroweak scale and cannot be explained by the known 1-loop perturbative result. On the other hand the restoration of chiral symmetry manifests itself through the degeneracy of the pseudoscalar and the scalar channels and of the vector and the axial-vector ones. This degeneracy pattern is the one expected by Ward identities associated to the presence of chiral symmetry.

We discuss a strategy to study non-perturbatively QCD up to very high temperatures by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice. It allows not only the thermodynamic properties of the theory but also other interesting thermal features to be investigated. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet mesonic screening masses and we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations at 12 temperatures covering the range from T $\sim$ 1 GeV up to $\sim$ 160 GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. On the one side, chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones, and, on the other side, we observe a clear splitting between the vector and the pseudoscalar screening masses up to the highest investigated temperature. A comparison with the high-temperature effective theory shows that the known one-loop order in the perturbative expansion does not provide a satisfactory description of the non-perturbative data up to the highest temperature considered.

In the past twenty years, we have reached a broad understanding of many light-driven phenomena in nanoscale systems. The temporal dynamics of the excited states are instead quite challenging to explore, and, at the same time, crucial to study for understanding the origin of fundamental physical and chemical processes. In this review we examine the current state and prospects of ultrafast phenomena driven by plasmons both from a fundamental and applied point of view. This research area is referred to as ultrafast plasmonics and represents an outstanding playground to tailor and control fast optical and electronic processes at the nanoscale, such as ultrafast optical switching, single photon emission and strong coupling interactions to tailor photochemical reactions. Here, we provide an overview of the field, and describe the methodologies to monitor and control nanoscale phenomena with plasmons at ultrafast timescales in terms of both modeling and experimental characterization. Various directions are showcased, among others recent advances in ultrafast plasmon-driven chemistry and multi-functional plasmonics, in which charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom are exploited to provide active control of the optical and electronic properties of nanoscale materials. As the focus shifts to the development of practical devices, such as all-optical transistors, we also emphasize new materials and applications in ultrafast plasmonics and highlight recent development in the relativistic realm. The latter is a promising research field with potential applications in fusion research or particle and light sources providing properties such as attosecond duration.

We present the details and first results of a new strategy for the determination of $α_s(m_Z)$. By simultaneously decoupling 3 fictitious heavy quarks we establish a relation between the $Λ$-parameters of three-flavor QCD and pure gauge theory. Very precise recent results in the pure gauge theory can thus be leveraged to obtain the three-flavour $Λ$-parameter in units of a common decoupling scale. Connecting this scale to hadronic physics in 3-flavour QCD leads to our result in physical units, $Λ^{(3)}_{\bar{\rm MS}} = 336(12)\, {\rm MeV}$, which translates to $α_s(m_Z) = 0.11823(84)$. This is compatible with both the FLAG average and the previous ALPHA result, with a comparable, yet still statistics dominated, error. This constitutes a highly non-trivial check, as the decoupling strategy is conceptually very different from the 3-flavour QCD step-scaling method, and so are their systematic errors. These include the uncertainties of the combined decoupling and continuum limits, which we discuss in some detail. We also quantify the correlation between both results, due to some common elements, such as the scale determination in physical units and the definition of the energy scale where we apply decoupling.

Molecular polaritons are hybrid light-matter states that emerge when a molecular transition strongly interacts with photons in a resonator. At optical frequencies, this interaction unlocks a way to explore and control new chemical phenomena at the nanoscale. Achieving such a control at ultrafast timescales, however, is an outstanding challenge, as it requires a deep understanding of the dynamics of the collectively coupled molecular excitation and the nanoconfined electromagnetic fields. Here, we investigate the dynamics of collective polariton states, realized by coupling molecular photoswitches to optically anisotropic plasmonic nanoantennas. Pump-probe experiments reveal an ultrafast collapse of polaritons to a single-molecule transition triggered by femtosecond-pulse excitation at room-temperature. Through a synergistic combination of experiments and quantum mechanical modelling, we show that the response of the system is governed by intramolecular dynamics, occurring one order of magnitude faster with respect to the unperturbed excited molecule relaxation to the ground state.

The current status of the seven methods presently used to determine $α_s$ based on: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $τ$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions fits, (iv) electroweak boson decays, hadronic final-states in (v) e+e-, (vi) e-p, and (vii) p-p collisions, and (viii) quarkonia decays and masses, are reviewed. Novel $α_s$ determinations are discussed, as well as the averaging method used to obtain the PDG world-average value at the reference Z boson mass scale, $α_s(m^2_Z)$. Each of the extraction methods proposed provides a "wish list" of experimental and theoretical developments required in order to achieve an ideal permille precision on $α_s(m^2_Z)$ within the next 10 years.

Inorganic van der Waals bonded semiconductors like transition metal dichalcogenides are subject of intense research due to their electronic and optical properties which are promising for next-generation optoelectronic devices. In this context, understanding the ultrafast carrier dynamics, as well as charge and energy transfer at the interface between metals and semiconductors is crucial and yet quite unexplored. Here, we present an experimental study on how thermally induced ultrafast charge carrier injection affects the exciton formation dynamics in bulk WS2 by employing a pump-push-probe scheme, where a pump pulse induces thermionic injection of electrons from the gold substrate into the conduction band of the semiconductor, and another delayed push pulse excites direct transitions in the WS2. The transient response shows different dynamics on the sub-ps timescale by varying the delay between pump and push pulses or by changing the pump fluence, thus disclosing the important role of ultrafast hot electron injection on the exciton formation dynamics. Our findings might have potential impact on research fields that target the integration of ultrafast optics at the boundary of photonics and electronics, as well as in optically-driven CMOS and quantum technologies.

We study the Renormalisation Group (RG) running of the quark mass, for $N_f=3$ QCD with Wilson fermions in a mixed action setup, with standard Schrödinger Functional (SF) boundary conditions for sea quarks and chirally rotated Schrödinger Functional ($χ$SF) boundary conditions for valence quarks. This necessitates the tuning of the boundary factor $z_f(g_0^2)$ of the $χ$SF valence action, in order to ensure that QCD symmetries are fully recovered in the continuum. The properties of this novel setup are monitored through the ratios $Z_S/Z_P$ and $Σ_S/Σ_P$ of the renormalisation parameters and step scaling functions of the scalar and pseudoscalar densities. Where comparison is possible, our $Z_S/Z_P$ results are found to agree with previous determinations, based on a mass ratio method arXiv:1906.03445 and Ward identities arXiv:2005.01352, arXiv:2101.10969, with Schrödinger Functional boundary conditions. The behaviour of $Σ_S/Σ_P$ confirms the theoretical expectations of $χ$SF QCD, related to the restoration of the theory's symmetries in the continuum limit. From the step scaling function of the pseudoscalar density we obtain the quark mass RG-running function from hadronic to perturbative energy scales. This is fully compatible with the earlier result obtained in a similar setup for Wilson quarks with Schrödinger Functional boundary conditions arXiv:1802.05243 and provides a strong universality test for the two lattice setups.

We present analysis details and new results for the strong coupling $α_s(m_Z)$, determined by the decoupling strategy. We measure a massive gradient flow (GF) coupling defined in finite volume with Schrödinger functional (SF) boundary conditions in a theory with $N_\text{f}=3$ degenerate heavy quarks of mass $M$. The massive couplings are matched to effective couplings in pure gauge. Using the running in the pure gauge theory and the perturbative relation of the Lambda parameters, the Lambda parameter of the three flavor theory is obtained by an extrapolation to infinite M. Our final result is compatible both with the FLAG average and with the previous ALPHA result, albeit with a slightly smaller, yet still statistics dominated, error. This constitutes a non-trivial check, as the decoupling strategy is conceptually very different from the 3-flavor QCD step-scaling method, and so are most of its systematic errors. These include the uncertainties of the decoupling and continuum limits, which we discuss in some detail. Furthermore, by relying on decoupling once again, we could estimate the small $O(a)$ and $O(1/M)$ contaminations to the massive GF coupling stemming from the SF boundaries by means of pure gauge simulations.

For each temperature we simulated several lattice spacings, so as to be able to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the meson screening masses deviate from the free theory result $2πT$ by at most a few percent. Their values, however, cannot be explained by one-loop perturbation theory up to the electroweak scale, where the pseudoscalar and the vector screening masses are still significantly different within our precision. Chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself through the degeneracy of the pseudoscalar and the scalar channels and of the vector and the axial ones.

We present a strategy based on the step-scaling technique to study non-perturbatively thermal QCD up to very high temperatures. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet meson screening masses at 12 temperatures covering the range from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. The calculation is carried out by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice by considering large spatial extensions in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated 3 or 4 values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. Chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the meson screening masses deviate from the free theory result, $2 πT$, by at most a few percent. These deviations, however, cannot be explained by the known leading term in the QCD coupling constant $g$ up to the highest temperature, where other contributions are still very relevant. In particular the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting turns out to be of $O(g^4)$ in the entire range explored, and it remains clearly visible up to the highest temperature, where the two screening masses are still significantly different within our numerical precision. The pattern of different contributions that we have found explains why it has been difficult in the past to match non-perturbative lattice results at $T \sim 1$ GeV with the analytic behaviour at asymptotically high temperatures.

The first results from the Fermilab E989 experiment have confirmed the long-standing tension between the experimental determination of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ=(g_μ-2)/2$ and its SM determination using the dispersive approach. In order to match the expected final precision from E989, the current uncertainty on ab initio determinations using lattice QCD must be decreased by a factor 5-15, a goal which is hampered by the signal-to-noise ratio problem of the electromagnetic current correlator. Multi-level Monte Carlo integration with fermions is a method which reduces the variance of correlators exponentially in the distance of the fields. Here we demonstrate that the variance reduction in a realistic two-level simulation with a pion mass of 270 MeV, linear size of 3 fm and lattice spacing around 0.065 fm is sufficient to compute the tail of the current correlator with the statistical accuracy required for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to $a_μ$. An efficient estimator is also employed for computing the disconnected contribution.

The optical properties of some nanomaterials can be controlled by an external magnetic field, providing active functionalities for a wide range of applications, from single-molecule sensing to nanoscale nonreciprocal optical isolation. Materials with broadband tunable magneto-optical response are therefore highly desired for various components in next-generation integrated photonic nanodevices. Concurrently, hyperbolic metamaterials received a lot of attention in the past decade since they exhibit unusual properties that are rarely observed in nature and provide an ideal platform to control the optical response at the nanoscale via careful design of the effective permittivity tensor, surpassing the possibilities of conventional systems. Here, we experimentally study magnetic circular dichroism in a metasurface made of type-II hyperbolic nanoparticles on a transparent substrate. Numerical simulations confirm the experimental findings, and an analytical model is established to explain the physical origin of the observed magneto-optical effects, which can be described in terms of the coupling of fundamental electric and magnetic dipole modes with an external magnetic field. Our system paves the way for the development of nanophotonic active devices combining the benefits of sub-wavelength light manipulation in hyperbolic metamaterials supporting a large density of optical states with the ability to freely tune the magneto-optical response via control over the anisotropic permittivity of the system.

Natural and artificial materials with broken center-of-inversion symmetry in their unit cell display high SHG efficiency, however the silicon-foundry compatible group-IV semiconductors (Si, Ge) are centrosymmetric, thereby preventing full integration of second-order nonlinearity in silicon photonics platforms. Here we demonstrate strong SHG in Ge-rich quantum wells grown on Si wafers. The symmetry breaking is artificially realized with a pair of asymmetric coupled quantum wells (ACQW), in which three of the quantum-confined states are equidistant in energy, resulting in a double resonance for SHG. Laser spectroscopy experiments demonstrate a giant second-order nonlinearity at mid-infrared pump wavelengths between 9 and 12 microns. That is 3 times better than the current precision from the dispersive approach, and 5-15 times smaller than the uncertainty based on the purely theoretical determinations from lattice QCD. So far the stumbling-block is the large statistical error in the Monte Carlo evaluation of the required correlation functions which can hardly be tamed by brute force. In this talk we present our proposal to solve this problem by multi-level Monte Carlo integration, a technique which reduces the variance of correlators exponentially in the distance of the fields. We report the results of our feasibility tests for the computation of the Hadronic Vacuum Polarization on a lattice with a linear extension of 3~fm, a spacing of 0.065 fm, and a pion mass of 270 MeV. Indeed the two-level integration makes the contribution to the statistical error from long-distances de-facto negligible by accelerating its inverse scaling with the cost of the simulation. Non-perturbative scale-dependent renormalization problems are ubiquitous in lattice QCD as they enter many relevant phenomenological applications. They require solving non-perturbatively the renormalization group equations for the QCD parameters and matrix elements of interest in order to relate their non-perturbative determinations at low energy to their high-energy counterparts needed for phenomenology. Bridging the large energy separation between the hadronic and perturbative regimes of QCD, however, is a notoriously difficult task. In this contribution we focus on the case of the QCD coupling. We critically address the common challenges that state-of-the-art lattice determinations have to face in order to be significantly improved. In addition, we review a novel strategy that has been recently put forward in order to solve this non-perturbative renormalization problem and discuss its implications for future precision determinations. The new ideas exploit the decoupling of heavy quarks to match $N_{\rm f}$-flavor QCD and the pure Yang-Mills theory. Through this matching the computation of the non-perturbative running of the coupling in QCD can be shifted to the computationally much easier to solve pure-gauge theory. We shall present results for the determination of the $Λ$-parameter of $N_{\rm f}=3$-flavor QCD where this strategy has been applied and proven successful. The results demonstrate that these techniques have the potential to unlock unprecedented precision determinations of the QCD coupling from the lattice. The ideas are moreover quite general and can be considered to solve other non-perturbative renormalization problems.

The I-mode confinement regime can feature small edge temperature drops that can lead to an increase in the energy deposited onto the divertor targets. In this work, we show that these events are associated with a relaxation of both electron temperature and density edge profiles, with the largest drop found at the pedestal top position. Stability analysis of edge profiles reveals that the operational points are far from the ideal peeling-ballooning boundary. Also, we show that these events appear close to the H-mode transition in the typical I-mode operational space in ASDEX Upgrade, and that no further enhancement of energy confinement is found when they occur. Moreover, scrape-off layer transport during these events is found to be very similar to type-I ELMs, with regard to timescales ($\approx$ 800 $μ$s), filament propagation, toroidally asymmetric energy effluxes at the midplane and asymmetry between inner and outer divertor deposited energy. In particular, the latter reveals that more energy reaches the outer divertor target. Lastly, first measurements of the divertor peak energy fluence are reported, and projections to ARC - a reactor designed to operate in I-mode - are drawn.

Ultrafast control of light-matter interactions constitutes a crucial feature in view of new technological frontiers of information processing. However, conventional optical elements are either static or feature switching speeds that are extremely low with respect to the timescales at which it is possible to control light. Here, we exploit high-quality-factor engineered epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes of a metal-insulator-metal nanocavity to realize an all-optical ultrafast modulation of the reflectance of light at a tailored wavelength. Our approach is based on the presence of the two, spectrally separated, ENZ absorption resonances of the cavity. Optical pum** of the system at its high energy ENZ mode leads to a strong red-shift of the low energy mode because of the transient increase of the local dielectric function, which leads to a sub-3-ps control of the reflectance at a specific wavelength with a relative modulation depth approaching 120%.

We present a strategy to define non-perturbatively the energy-momentum tensor in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) which satisfies the appropriate Ward identities and has the right trace anomaly. The tensor is defined by regularizing the theory on a lattice, and by fixing its renormalization constants non-perturbatively by suitable Ward identities associated to the Poincare' invariance of the continuum theory. The latter are derived in thermal QCD with a non-zero imaginary chemical potential formulated in a moving reference frame. A renormalization group analysis leads to simple renormalization-group-invariant definitions of the gluonic and fermionic contributions to either the singlet or the non-singlet components of the tensor, and therefore of their form factors among physical states. The lattice discussion focuses on the Wilson discretization of quark fields but the strategy is general. Specific to that case, we also carry out the analysis for the on-shell O(a)-improvement of the energy-momentum tensor. The renormalization and improvement programs profit from the fact that, as shown here, the thermal theory enjoys de-facto automatic O(a)-improvement at finite temperature. The validity of the proposal is scrutinized analytically by a study to 1-loop order in lattice perturbation theory with shifted and twisted (for quarks only) boundary conditions. The latter provides also additional useful insight for a precise non-perturbative calculation of the renormalization constants. The strategy proposed here is accessible to Monte Carlo computations, and in this sense it provides a practical way to define non-perturbatively the energy-momentum tensor in QCD.

We present a new theoretical and practical strategy to renormalize non-perturbatively the energy-momentum tensor in lattice QCD based on the framework of shifted boundary conditions. As a preparatory step for the fully non-perturbative calculation, we apply the strategy at 1-loop order in perturbation theory determining the renormalization constants of both the gluonic and the fermionic components of the energy-momentum tensor. Using shifted boundary conditions, the entropy density of QCD is directly related to the expectation value of the space-time components of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor. We then discuss its practical implementation by numerical simulations of QCD with 3 flavours of Wilson quarks for temperatures between 2.5 GeV and 80 GeV.

The gauge configurations, which span renormalisation scales from 4 to 70~GeV, are generated with $N_{\rm f}=3$ massless flavors and Schrödinger Functional (SF) boundary conditions. Valence quarks are computed with $χ$SF boundary conditions. We show preliminary results on the tuning of the $χ$SF Symanzik coefficient $z_f$ and the scaling of the axial current normalization $Z_{\rm A}$. Moreover we carry out a detailed comparison with the expectations from one-loop perturbation theory. Finally we outline how automatically $\mathrm{O}(a)$-improved $B_{\rm K}$ matrix elements, including BSM contributions, can be computed in a $χ$SF renormalization scheme.

This document collects a written summary of all contributions presented at the workshop "$α_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the strong coupling" held at ECT* (Trento) in Feb. 11--15, 2019. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from the key categories where high precision measurements are available: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $τ$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions, (iv) event shapes, jet cross sections, and other hadronic final-states in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson and W boson hadronic decays, and (vi) hadronic final states in p-p collisions. The status of the current theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, and future perspectives were thoroughly reviewed. Novel $α_s$ determination approaches were discussed, as well as the combination method used to obtain a world-average value of the QCD coupling at the Z mass pole.

Using finite size scaling techniques and a renormalization scheme based on the Gradient Flow, we determine non-perturbatively the $β$-function of the $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory for a range of renormalized couplings $\bar g^2\sim 1-12$. We perform a detailed study of the matching with the asymptotic NNLO perturbative behavior at high-energy, with our non-perturbative data showing a significant deviation from the perturbative prediction down to $\bar{g}^2\sim1$. We conclude that schemes based on the Gradient Flow are not competitive to match with the asymptotic perturbative behavior, even when the NNLO expansion of the $β$-function is known. On the other hand, we show that matching non-perturbatively the Gradient Flow to the Schrödinger Functional scheme allows us to make safe contact with perturbation theory with full control on truncation errors. This strategy allows us to obtain a precise determination of the $Λ$-parameter of the $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory in units of a reference hadronic scale ($\sqrt{8t_0}\,Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}} = 0.6227(98)$), showing that a precision on the QCD coupling below 0.5\% per-cent can be achieved using these techniques.

We present preliminary results towards a fully non-perturbative determination of the equation of state of QCD at very high-temperatures, $T\approx 3-80\,{\rm GeV}$. The key ingredient is the lattice formulation of QCD in a moving reference frame, which allows us for a neat determination of the entropy density from simple expectation values of the momentum-components of the energy-momentum tensor. For the computation we employ $N_{\rm f}=3$ flavours of non-perturbatively O($a$)-improved Wilson-fermions. We present an analysis of the O($a$)-improvement of the expectation values entering the determination, and show how these can be accurately computed in simulations.

We explore the influence of the nanoporous structure on the thermal relaxation of electrons and holes excited by ultrashort laser pulses ($\sim 7$ fs) in thin gold films. Plasmon decay into hot electron-hole pairs results in the generation of a Fermi-Dirac distribution thermalized at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{e}}$ higher than the lattice temperature $T_{\mathrm{l}}$. The relaxation times of the energy exchange between electrons and lattice, here measured by pump-probe spectroscopy, is slowed down by the nanoporous structure, resulting in much higher peak $T_{\mathrm{e}}$ than for bulk gold films. The electron-phonon coupling constant and the Debye temperature are found to scale with the metal filling factor $f$ and a two-temperature model reproduces the data. The results open the way for electron temperature control in metals by engineering of the nanoporous geometry.

The computation is based on the non-perturbative determination of the $Λ$-parameter of $N_{\rm f}=3$ QCD, and the perturbative matching of the $N_{\rm f}=3$ and $N_{\rm f}=5$ theories. The final result: $α_s(m_Z)=0.11852(84)$, reaches sub-percent accuracy.

We determine the non-perturbatively renormalized axial current for O($a$) improved lattice QCD with Wilson quarks. Our strategy is based on the chirally rotated Schrödinger functional and can be generalized to other finite (ratios of) renormalization constants which are traditionally obtained by imposing continuum chiral Ward identities as normalization conditions. Compared to the latter we achieve an error reduction up to one order of magnitude. Our results have already enabled the setting of the scale for the $N_{\rm f}=2+1$ CLS ensembles [1] and are thus an essential ingredient for the recent $α_s$ determination by the ALPHA collaboration [2]. In this paper we shortly review the strategy and present our results for both $N_{\rm f}=2$ and $N_{\rm f}=3$ lattice QCD, where we match the $β$-values of the CLS gauge configurations. In addition to the axial current renormalization, we also present precise results for the renormalized local vector current.

Using continuum extrapolated lattice data we trace a family of running couplings in three-flavour QCD over a large range of scales from about 4 to 128 GeV. The scale is set by the finite space time volume so that recursive finite size techniques can be applied, and Schrödinger functional (SF) boundary conditions enable direct simulations in the chiral limit. Compared to earlier studies we have improved on both statistical and systematic errors. Using the SF coupling to implicitly define a reference scale $1/L_0\approx 4$ GeV through $\bar{g}^2(L_0) =2.012$, we quote $L_0 Λ^{N_{\rm f}=3}_{\overline{\rm MS}} =0.0791(21)$. This error is dominated by statistics; in particular, the remnant perturbative uncertainty is negligible and very well controlled, by connecting to infinite renormalization scale from different scales $2^n/L_0$ for $n=0,1,\ldots,5$. An intermediate step in this connection may involve any member of a one-parameter family of SF couplings. This provides an excellent opportunity for tests of perturbation theory some of which have been published in a letter [1]. The results indicate that for our target precision of 3 per cent in $L_0 Λ^{N_{\rm f}=3}_{\overline{\rm MS}}$, a reliable estimate of the truncation error requires non-perturbative data for a sufficiently large range of values of $α_s=\bar{g}^2/(4π)$. In the present work we reach this precision by studying scales that vary by a factor $2^5= 32$, reaching down to $α_s\approx 0.1$. We here provide the details of our analysis and an extended discussion.

Owing to the near-field enhancement, the result is an ultrafast, sub-diffraction, coherent light source tunable between 3 and 5 micrometer wavelength on a silicon substrate. To observe nonlinearity in this challenging spectral region, a high-power femtosecond laser system equipped with parametric frequency conversion in combination with an all-reflective confocal microscope setup is employed. We show spatially resolved maps of the linear scattering cross section and the nonlinear emission of single isolated antenna structures. A clear third order power dependence as well as the mid-infrared emission spectra prove the nonlinear nature of the light emission. Simulations support the observed resonance length of the double rod antenna and demonstrate that the field enhancement inside the antenna material is responsible for the nonlinear frequency mixing.

We control the thickness of GaSe on the level of individual layers and study the corresponding optical absorption via highly sensitive differential transmission measurements. Suppression of excitonic transitions is observed when the number of layers is smaller than a critical value of 8. Through ab-initio modelling we are able to link this behavior to a fundamental change in the band structure that leads to the formation of a valence band shaped as an inverted Mexican hat in thin GaSe. The thickness-controlled modulation of the optical properties provides attractive resources for the development of functional optoelectronic devices based on a single material.

We investigate the quark content of the scalar meson $a_0(980)$ using lattice QCD. To this end we consider correlation functions of six different two- and four-quark interpolating fields. We evaluate all diagrams, including diagrams, where quarks propagate within a timeslice, e.g. with closed quark loops. We demonstrate that diagrams containing such closed quark loops have a drastic effect on the final results and, thus, may not be neglected. Our analysis shows that in addition to the expected spectrum of two-meson scattering states there is an additional energy level around the two-particle thresholds of $K + \bar{K}$ and $η+ π$. This additional state, which is a candidate for the $a_0(980)$ meson, couples to a quark-antiquark as well as to a diquark-antidiquark interpolating field, indicating that it is a superposition of an ordinary $\bar{q} q$ and a tetraquark structure. The analysis is performed using AMIAS, a novel statistical method based on the sampling of all possible spectral decompositions of the considered correlation functions, as well as solving standard generalized eigenvalue problems.
