In the present study we have examined the effect of negative chemical pressure in iron pnictides. We have synthesized substitution series replacing arsenic by antimony in a number of 1111- and 122-iron arsenides and present their crystallographic and physical properties. The SDW transition temperature in LaFeAs$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$Sb$_{\mathrm{x}}$O decreases with increasing antimony content, while the superconducting transition temperature in LaFeAs$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$Sb$_{\mathrm{x}}$O$_{\mathrm{0.85}}$F$_{\mathrm{0.15}}$ initially increases with Sb substitution. 1111-compounds with samarium instead of lanthanum have a smaller unit cell volume. In these phases, no Sb solubility is observed. There is also no apparent solubility of antimony in the 122-iron arsenides.

Magnetic-field changes $<$ 0.2 Oe over the scan length in magnetometers that necessitate sample movement are enough to create artifacts in the dc magnetization measurements of the weakly ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ (Ru1212) below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \approx$ 30 K. The observed features depend on the specific magnetic-field profile in the sample chamber and this explains the variety of reported behaviors for this compound below $T_{c}$. An experimental procedure that combines improvement of the magnetic-field homogeneity with very small scan lengths and leads to artifact-free measurements similar to those on a stationary sample has been developed. This procedure was used to measure the mass magnetization of Ru1212 as a function of the applied magnetic field H (-20 Oe $\le$ H $\le$ 20 Oe) at $T < T_{c}$ and discuss, in conjunction with resistance and ac susceptibility measurements, the possibility of a spontaneous vortex state (SVS) for this compound. Although the existence of a SVS can not be excluded, an alternative interpretation of the results based on the granular nature of the investigated sample is also possible. Specific-heat measurements of Sr$_{2}$GdRuO$_{6}$ (Sr2116), the precursor for the preparation of Ru1212 and thus a possible impurity phase, show that it is unlikely that Sr2116 is responsible for the specific-heat features observed for Ru1212 at $T_{c}$.

Whereas resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements on the magnetic (Tm ~ 130 K) superconductor (Tc,onset ~ 50 K) RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1212Gd) reported by different research groups reveal a universal behavior in its superconducting state, this is not the case with the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetization measurements. The reported SQUID measurements in the superconducting state of Ru-1212Gd reveal a variety of behaviors, leaving the question of bulk superconductivity for this compound open. We review several of the reported behaviors by presenting measurements done on our samples belonging to the same batch. Based on the observed sensitivity of Ru-1212Gd to magnetic field inhomogeneities when it is moved in the superconducting magnet of the SQUID magnetometer during the measurements, we suggest that the reported different behaviors can be the result of different field profiles in the superconducting magnet and not of different superconducting properties. In order to avoid the artifacts arising from moving the sample in an inhomogeneous field, we did measurements on a stationary Ru-1212Gd sample employing a home made SQUID magnetometer. The measured curves showed none of the suspicious ``symptoms'' present in the curves measured with a magnetometer employing sample movement (e.g. no reversal of the features observed in the superconducting state of Ru-1212Gd by a field reversal) and if verified by measurements on stationary samples by other groups a universal behavior in the superconducting state of Ru-1212Gd can be revealed by the SQUID measurements too. Our considerations support the existence of bulk superconductivity for Ru-1212Gd.

Inhomogeneities of the field in the superconducting magnet of a superconducting quantum intereference device (SQUID) magnetometer can create serious artefacts in the d.c. magnetization measurements of superconducting samples. We discuss the problem focusing on the procedure of calculating the magnetic moment of a sample from the measured SQUID output signal. The (weakly) ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 has been reported sensitive to inhomogeneities of the SQUID's superconducting magnet, which create artefacts in its measured magnetization. Indeed, we show that, because of the small values of the magnetic hysteresis width, field changes less than 100 microTesla over the scaning length inside the magnet are enough to create spurious signals in the measured magnetic moment of this compound.

Based on measurements performed on both bulk and powdered samples of Ru-1212 and Sr-2116, we exclude the possibility, that the observed behavior of the magnetization of Ru-1212 is due to Sr-2116 impurities. The effect is related to the superconductivity of Ru-1212, but it is not an intrinsic property of this compound. We provide evidence that the observation of magnetization peaks in the superconducting state of Ru-1212 is due to flux motion generated by the movement of the sample in an inhomogeneous field, during the measurement in the SQUID magnetometer. We propose several tests, that help to decide, whether the features observed in a SQUID magnetization measurement of Ru-1212 represent a property of the compound or not.

Compacted platinum powders exhibit a sharp onset of diamagnetic screening at $T \simeq 1.9$ mK in zero magnetic field in all samples investigated. This sharp onset is interpreted in terms of the intragranular transition into the superconducting state. At lower temperatures, the magnetic ac susceptibility strongly depends on the ac field amplitude and reflects the small intergranular critical current density $j_{c}$. This critical current density shows a strong dependence on the packing fraction f of the granular samples. Surprisingly, $j_{c}$ increases significantly with decreasing f ($j_{c}(B=0, T=0) \simeq 0.07$ A/cm$^{2}$ for f = 0.67 and $j_{c}(B=0, T=0) \simeq 0.8$ A/cm$^{2}$ for f = 0.50). The temperature dependence of $j_{c}$ shows strong positive curvature over a wide temperature range for both samples. The phase diagrams of inter- and intragranular superconductivity for different samples indicate that the granular structure might play the key role for an understanding of the origin of superconductivity in the platinum compacts.

We investigated the low-temperature properties of polycrystalline HoNi_2^11B_2C by means of ac-susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction in the temperature range of 1.5 to 10 K and zero magnetic field. A sample with pronounced re-entrant behaviour was chosen since it exhibits a superconducting state which is strongly affected by the intrinsic magnetism, the formation of long range magnetic order, via pair-breaking. The evolution and volume fractions of the three different magnetic structures were observed and correlated to the superconducting behaviour.
