Context. Since 1998, a planet-search around main sequence stars within 50~pc in the southern hemisphere has been carried out with the CORALIE spectrograph at La Silla Observatory. Aims. With an observing time span of more than 20 years, the CORALIE survey is able to detect long term trends in data with masses and separations large enough to select ideal targets for direct imaging. Detecting these giant companion candidates will allow us to start bridging the gap between radial velocity detected exoplanets and directly imaged planets and brown dwarfs. Methods. Long-term precise Doppler measurements with the CORALIE spectrograph reveal radial velocity signatures of massive planetary companions and brown dwarfs on long-period orbits. Results. In this paper we report the discovery of new companions orbiting HD~181234, HD~13724, HD~25015, HD~92987 and HD~50499. We also report updated orbital parameters for HD~50499b, HD~92788b and HD~98649b. In addition, we confirm the recent detection of HD~92788c. The newly reported companions span a period range of 15.6 to 40.4 years and a mass domain of 2.93 to 26.77 $M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$, the latter of which straddles the nominal boundary between planets and brown dwarfs. Conclusion. We have reported the detection of five new companions and updated parameters of four known extrasolar planets. We identify at least some of these companions to be promising candidates for imaging and further characterisation.

Very rapid optical variability of PKS 2155-304

We have performed an optical observation campaign on PKS 2155-304, whose aim was to determine the variability properties of this object on very short time scales in several photometric bands. We detected variability on time scales as short as 15 min. The Fourier properties of the light curves have been investigated using structure function analysis. The power spectra are well described by a power-law with an index -2.4. It is compatible with the index found in the X-ray domain. The value of this index shows that the light curves cannot be generated by a sum of exponential pulses. Using historical data, we find that the longest time scale of variability in the optical domain lies between 10 and 40 days. We find a strong correlation between flux and spectral index, which we interpret as the signature of an underlying constant component. As a result we do not find evidence of spectral variation for the active nucleus in the optical domain. A lag has been found between the light curves in different optical bands. The short-wavelength light curves lead the long-wavelength ones. The amplitude of the lag is about 40 min for a factor 2 in wavelength. Our results are compared with predictions from different models. None of them can explain naturally the set of results obtained with this campaign, but we bring out some clues for the origin of the variability.

We present detailed JHK surface photometry with ellipse fits of 13 galaxies selected from previous optical observations as likely candidates for having a secondary bar or a triaxial bulge within the primary bar. We present detailed JHK surface photometry with ellipse fits of 13 galaxies selected from previous optical observations as likely candidates for having a secondary bar or a triaxial bulge within the primary bar. We have found 7 double-barred galaxies, 3 double-barred galaxies with an additional intermediate structure with twisted isophotes, and 3 galaxies with a bar and central twisted isophotes. A global analysis of the structural parameter characteristics in the I- and K-bands is presented. Various numerical models of galaxies with bars within bars are also analysed using the ellipse fitting technique and compared to the observations. A thorough review of the possible hypotheses able to explain this phenomenon is given with emphasis on the most likely ones.
