The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has reported a 2.8$σ$ excess in the $(2e)(2jets)$ channel around 2.1 TeV. Interpretation of this data is reconsidered in terms of the production of a right-handed weak gauge boson, $W_R$, of the left-right symmetric model and in an $SO(10)$ grand unified theory abiding by the Extended Survival Hypothesis. The left-right symmetric model can be consistent with this excess if (a) the heavy right-handed neutrino has a mass near $W_R$, or (b) if $g_L \neq g_R$, or (c) the right-handed CKM matrix is nontrivial. Combinations of the above possibilities are also viable. A $W_R$ with a mass in the TeV region if embedded in $SO(10)$ is not compatible with $g_L = g_R$. Rather, it implies $0.64 \leq g_R/g_L \leq 0.78$. Further, a unique symmetry-breaking route -- the order being left-right discrete symmetry breaking first, followed by $SU(4)_C$ and finally $SU(2)_R$ -- to the standard model is picked out. The $L \leftrightarrow R$ discrete symmetry has to be broken at around $10^{16}$ GeV. The grand unification scale is pushed to $10^{18}$ GeV making the detection of proton decay in ongoing searches rather unlikely. The $SU(4)_C$ breaking scale can be at its allowed lower limit of $10^6$ GeV so that $n - \bar{n}$ oscillation or flavour changing processes such as $K_L \rightarrow μe$ and $B_{d,s} \rightarrow μe$ may be detectable. The Higgs scalar multiplets responsible for $SO(10)$ symmetry breaking at various stages are uniquely identified so long as one adheres to a minimalist principle. We also remark, {\em en passant}, about a partially unified Pati-Salam model.

We examine spontaneous symmetry breaking of a renormalisable U(1) x U(1) gauge theory coupled to fermions when kinetic mixing is present. We do not assume that the kinetic mixing parameter is small. A rotation plus scaling is used to remove the mixing and put the gauge kinetic terms in the canonical form. Fermion currents are also rotated in a non-orthogonal way by this basis transformation. Through suitable redefinitions the interaction is cast into a diagonal form. This framework, where mixing is absent, is used for subsequent analysis. The symmetry breaking determines the fermionic current which couples to the massless gauge boson. The strength of this coupling as well as the couplings of the massive gauge boson are extracted. This formulation is used to consider a gauged model for dark matter by identifying the massless gauge boson with the photon and the massive state to its dark counterpart. Matching the coupling of the residual symmetry with that of the photon sets a lower bound on the kinetic mixing parameter. We present analytical formulae of the couplings of the dark photon in this model and indicate some physics consequences.

General lowest order perturbations to hermitian squared mass matrices of leptons are considered away from the tribimaximal (TBM) limit in which a weak flavor basis with mass diagonal charged leptons is chosen. The three measurable TBM deviants are expressed linearly in terms of perturbation induced dimensionless coefficients appearing in the charged lepton and neutrino flavor eigenstates. With unnatural cancellations assumed to be absent and the charged lepton perturbation contributions to their flavor eigenstates argued to be small, we analytically derive the following result. Within lowest order perturbations, a deviation from maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and the amount of CP violation in neutrino oscillations cannot both be large (i.e. $12$-$17 \% $), posing the challenge of verification to forthcoming experiments at the intensity frontier.

We identify the nature of the perturbation matrix and consider the possibility of the solar neutrino splitting also resulting from it. We calculate up to first order in perturbation theory and evaluate the deviations proportional to $\sin θ_{13}$ while including CP-nonconservation. Finally, we briefly discuss a gauge model where such an addition to the neutrino mass matrix arises through one-loop effects.

It has been shown that tribimaximal mixing can be obtained by some particular breaking pattern of the $A_4$ symmetry, wherein the extra $A_4$ triplet Higgs scalars pick up certain fixed vacuum expectation value (VEV) alignments. We have performed a detailed analysis of the different possible neutrino mass matrices within the framework of the $A_4$ model. We take into account all possible singlet and triplet Higgs scalars which leave the Lagrangian invariant under $A_4$. We break $A_4$ spontaneously, allowing the Higgs to take any VEV in general. We show that the neutrino mixing matrix deviates from tribimaximal, both due to the presence of the extra Higgs singlets, as well as from the deviation of the triplet Higgs VEV from its desired alignment, taken previously. We solve the eigenvalue problem for a variety of these illustrative cases and identify the ones where one obtains exact tribimaximal mixing. All such cases require fine-tuning. We show which neutrino mass matrices would be strongly disfavored by the current neutrino data. Finally, we study in detail the phenomenology of the remaining viable mass matrices and establish the deviation of the neutrino mixing from tribimaximal, both analytically as well as numerically.

In an economical system with only two heavy right handed neutrinos, we postulate a new texture for $3 \times 2$ Dirac mass matrix $m_D$. This model implies one massless light neutrino and thus displays only two patterns of mass spectrum for light neutrinos, namely hierarchical or inverse-hierarchical. Both the cases can correctly reproduce all the current neutrino oscillation data with a unique prediction $m_{ν_e ν_e} = \frac{\sqrt{Δm^2_{solar}}}{3}$ and $\sqrt{Δm^2_{atm}}$ for the hierarchical and the inverse-hierarchica cases, respectively, which can be tested in next generation neutrino-less double beta decay experiments. Introducing a single physical CP phase in $m_D$, we examine baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis. Interestingly, through the CP phase there are correlations between the amount of baryon asymmetry and neutrino oscillation parameters. We find that for a fixed CP phase, the hierarchical case also succeeds in generating the observed baryon asymmetry in our universe, plus a non-vanishing $U_{e3}$ which is accessible in future baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

We show that when we enforce this general condition $m_2 > m_{susy}$ on the solutions of the renormalization group equations, the condition is translated into an upper bound on the scale $m_{susy}$. Using presently favored values of $α_1(m_z),α_2(m_z),α_3(m_z)$, we get $m_{susy} < 4.5 \times 10^9$ GeVs for the central value of $α_3(m_Z)$. When low energy threshold effect is present, this bound gets smeared yet remains generally stable in the $10^9-10^{10}$ GeV range. We also show that if we demand string unification instead of having an unified gauge theory, this constraint can be changed by exotic hypercharge normalizations.

We numerically calculate corrections to neutrino masses in minimal supergravity (mSugra) and Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (GMSB) scenarios and identify parameter spaces in the high energy regime for which the solar neutrino mass splitting becomes too large compared to the LMA solution. We show that such considerations can give bounds on GMSB and mSugra models which can be useful. On the contrary, if we start from degenerate mass eigenvalues at the tree level, these threshold corrections being generation dependent, can also produce the required mass splitting at solar scale for regions of parameter space.

The perturbative treatment of subdominant oscillation and the matter effect in neutrino beams/superbeams, propagating over long baselines and being used to look for CP violation, is studied here for a general matter density function varying with distance. New lowest order analytic expressions are given for different flavour transition and survival probabilities in a general neutrino mixing basis and a variable earth matter density profile. It is demonstrated that the matter effect in the muon neutrino (antineutrino) flavour survival probability vanishes to this order, provided the depletion, observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos and antineutrinos at super-Kamiokande, is strictly maximal. This result is independent of the earth density profile and the distance L between the source and the detector. In the general variable density case we show that one cannot separate the matter induced asymmetry from a genuine CP effect by kee** two detectors at distances $L_1$ and $L_2$ from the source while maintaining a fixed ratio $L_1/E_1 = L_2/E_2$. This needs to be done numerically and we estimate the asymmetry generated by the earth matter effect with particular density profiles and some chosen parameters for very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Because this symmetry is broken very weakly $θ_\odot$ does not deviate much from $\tan^2 θ_\odot=1$ which is its value in the symmetric limit. This gives a mismatch with LMA solution where mixing is large but not exactly maximal. We confront this property of Zee mass matrix by phenomenologically analyzing recent results from solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments at various confidence levels. We conclude that LOW type solution is compatible with the Zee mass matrix at 99% confidence level when atmospheric neutrino deficit is explained by maximal $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation. Thus the minimal version of the Zee model even though disfavored by the LMA type or VO type solutions, is compatible with LOW type solution of solar neutrino problem.

There are several advantages of introducing adjoint superfields at intermediate energies around $M=10^{13}$ GeV. Such as (i) gauge couplings still unify (ii) neutrino masses and mixings are produced (iii) primordial lepton asymmetry can be produced. We point out that if adjoint scalars have bulk excitations along with gauge bosons whereas fermions and the doublet scalar live on boundary then N=2 supersymmetric beta functions $\tilde{b_i}$ vanish. Thus even if extra dimensions open up at an intermediate scale $μ_0$ and all N=2 Yang-Mills fields as well as N=2 matter fields in the adjoint representation propagate in the bulk, still gauge couplings renormalize beyond $μ_0$ just like they do in 4-dimensions with adjoint scalars. Consequently unification is achieved in the presence to extra dimensions, mass scales are determined uniquely via Renormalization Group Equations(RGE) and unification scale remains high enough to suppress proton decay. This scenario can be falsified if we get signatures of extra dimensions at low energy.

The out-of-equilibrium decay of the superfield (1,3,0) at $10^{13}$ GeV may also lead to a lepton asymmetry which then gets converted into the present observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Here the fermion mass spectrum of the Fritzsch texture is recalculated. In a single step supersymmetric GUT with $M_X \sim 10^{16}$ GeV such values of the strange quark mass can be obtained for low values of $\tan β$. Experimental numbers $m^{pole}_t = 173 \pm 6$ GeV and $4.1 < m_b(m_b) < 4.4$ GeV are used in this study. Since the scenario is supersymmetric, gaugino loop diagrams contribute to the masses in addition to usual tree level Yukawa contributions. Upper bound of the mixing parameter $V_{cb}$ is taken at 0.045

We make a comprehensive analysis of an extended supersymmetric model(ESSM) obtained by adding a pair of vector-like families to the minimal supersymmetric standard model and having specific forms of 5 x 5 fermion mass matrices. The singlet Higgs couplings which link the ordinary to vector-like generations do not have the renormalization effects of the gauge interactions and hence the "quasi-infrared fixed point" near the scale of the top quark mass. The two-loop Yukawa effects on gauge couplings lead to an unified coupling $α_X$ around 0.2 with an unification scale M_X of 10^{16.9} GeV. Large Yukawa effects in the high energy region arrest the growth of the QCD coupling near M_X making the evolution flat. The renormalization effects of the vector-like generations on soft mass parameters has important effects on the charge and color breaking(CCB)minima. We will show that there exists parameter space where there is no charge and color breaking. We will also demonstrate that there exists minima of the Higgs potential which satisfies the mass of the Z boson but avoid CCB. Upper limits on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson from the one-loop effective scalar potential is obtained for sets of universal soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters.

We study a set of textures giving rise to correct masses and mixings of the charged fermions in the context of leptogenesis. The Dirac neutrino texture pattern is assumed to be identical with the up quark texture. The heavy Majonana neutrino mass matrix is obtained by inverting the type-I see-saw formula and using the neutrino masses and mixings required by the solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments as input. After making the feasibility study of the generated lepton asymmetry via the decay of the heavy right handed neutrino, we compute the generated baryon asymmetry by numerically solving the supersymmetric Boltzmann equations. We find for these models that both the hierarchy of the texture as well as the placement of the texture zeros are important to the viability of leptogenesis as the source of the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe.

We utilize such neutrino as well as charged leptonic textures which lead to (maximal) mixing angles of $π/4$ in each sector for relevant transitions. The combined leptonic CKM mixing angles are $π/4 \pm π/4$ which lead to very small $\sin^2 2 Θ$ relevant to solar neutrino and LSND experiments. We propose that on the other hand the absence of the charged leptonic partner of the sterile neutrino maintains the angle $π/4$ from the neutrino sector for the transition $ν_μ\leftrightarrow ν_s$ and hence atmospheric neutrino anomaly is explained through maximal mixing.

We present a realistic grand unified model based on the gauge group $SO(10)\times SO(10)^\prime$ that leads to the desired masses and mixings for the sterile and the known neutrinos needed to understand the above observations while fitting those of the known charged fermions. The model is a grand unified realization of the recently proposed idea that the sterile neutrino is the lightest neutrino of a mirror sector of the universe which has identical matter and gauge content as the standard model. The two SO(10)'s operate on the two sectors in a mirror symmetric way and are connected by a mixed Higgs representations whose net effect is to connect the superheavy right handed neutrinos of the two sectors.

We show that this problem can be solved in a particular class of SO(10) models with a pair of 10 multiplets if we include the additional left-handed triplet contribution to the light neutrino mass matrix. For one-step unified models the above mentioned measurement bounds the arbitrary but experimentally determinable parameter $\tan β$ to the range $1.3 \le \tan β\le 2.1$. Further crunch on the top quark mass may determine $\tan β$ even more accurately within the fixed point scenario. On the other hand an experimental value of $\tan β> 2.1$ will rule out the fixed point scenario bounding $h^2_t(M_X)/4 π$ to 0.022 from above.

We also compute the predictions for the top and bottom quark masses in this scenario and compare them with those of MSSM. We first argue that for the R-parity violating couplings $λ_{R\!\!\!/}$ to be suppressed to the desired level, the $B-L$ local symmetry must break at an intermediate scale $M_{B-L}$ since $λ_{R\!\!\!/} =M_{B-L}/M_{GUT}$. We then construct scenarios where such intermediate scales arise being consistent with gauge coupling unification in a two-loop renormalization group study. In the resulting $SO(10)$ models, higher-dimensional-operator-induced R-parity violating couplings are potentially large (except in one case), and are therefore inconsistent with limits on the proton life time unless the couplings associated with the higher dimensional terms are fine tuned to very small values. However, the $[SU(3)]^3$ and $G_{224}$ models can be consistent if a certain class of quark-lepton coupling in the superpotential is forbidden by a discrete summetry (unrelated to R-parity). An interesting prediction of these models is neutron-anti-neutron oscillation with observable strength.

The unification scale, the intermediate scale and the value of the unification gauge coupling in these models are calculated and the gauge boson mediated proton decay rates are estimated. In some cases the predicted proton lifetime turns out to be in the border-line of experimental limit. The predictions of the top quark mass, the mass ratio $m_b(m_b)/ m_τ(m_τ)$ from the two-loop evolution of Yukawa couplings and the mass of the left handed neutrino via see-saw mechanism are summarized. The lower bounds on the ratio of the VEVs of the two low energy doublets ($\tanβ$) from the requirement of the perturbative unitarity of the top quark Yukawa coupling up to the grand unification scale are also presented. In a SUSY GUT having an extra reverse doublet-triplet splitting near the GUT scale, where the mass of an extra doublet is greater than the mass of an extra triplet by two orders of magnitude, a low prediction of $α_s$ can be achieved through threshold corrections via the heavy scalars in the fundamental representations, making the prediction consistent with the values being suggested by low energy measurements. We implement this mechanism in a SUSY SU(5) GUT minimally extended to suppress Higgsino mediated proton decay. We also point out that as a consequence of this extension a natural scenario arises with a large hierarchy in Yukawa couplings ($ λ_t / λ_b \sim 40$). We show that one of the ways of obtaining consistency between the idea of supersymmetric grand unification and an apparent low value of $α_{strong}(M_Z)\simeq .11$ indicated by several low energy experiments is to have an intermediate scale corresponding to a local $B-L$ symmetry breaking around the mass scale of $10^{10}$ to $10^{12}$ GeV. We discuss the realization of this idea within the framework of supersymmetric $SO(10)$ grand unified theories with spectra of particles derivable from simple superstring-inspired versions of this model. We then study the $b-τ$ mass unification within this class of models and show that due to the influence of new gauge and Yukawa interactions beyond the intermediate scale, the prediction of the $b$-quark mass comes out well within the presently accepted values. We also discuss an un-orthodox class of SUSY models inspired by some theoretical considerations having two pairs of Higgs doublets at low energy and show that they also can lead to unification with intermediate scales and low $α_{s}(M_Z)$ as desired.

Abstract:
The one-loop evolution of Yukawa couplings in the minimal supersymmetric left-right model (MSUSYLR) model with a wide variation of the right handed breaking scale $M_R$ from 1 TeV to $10^{18}$ GeV is studied assuming that all third generation Yukawa couplings are equal and in the fixed point domain of the top quark Yuakwa coupling ($h_t$) at the Plank scale. We show that: (1) The top quark Yukaw…

We show that: (1) The top quark Yukawa coupling $h_t$ displays a fixed point behaviour that is similar to that of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). (2) The MSUSYLR model predicts a value of the top mass in the interval 177 to 184 GeV for $α_s$ in the interval 0.11 to 0.12. (3) A large value of $tanβ$ is required to reproduce the correct mass of the bottom quark and tau lepton. (4) With the experimental value of the ratio ${m_b(m_b) \over m_τ(m_τ)}$ as an input the range of the right handed symmetry breaking scale $M_R$ can be predicted. (5) The numerical value of the Majorana Yukawa coupling $h_M$ can be calculated which is otherwise a completely free parameter.

An extension of the left--right symmetric model has been constructed which gives in a natural way the three lepton decay modes of the proton which have been suggested as an explanation for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. An extension of the left--right symmetric model has been constructed which gives in a natural way the three lepton decay modes of the proton which have been suggested as an explanation for the atmospheric neutrino anomaly. We write down the potential which after minimization gives the proper choice of the Higgs spectrum. With this Higgs spectrum we then study the evolution of the gauge coupling constants and point out that for consistency one has to include effects of gravity.

The 1-loop evolution of couplings in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, extended to include baryon nonconserving $(B\!\!\!/)$ operators through explicit $R$-parity violation, is considered kee** only $B\!\!\!/$ superpotential terms involving the maximum possible number of third generation superfields. If all retained Yukawa couplings $Y_i$ are required to remain in the perturbative domain $(Y_i < 1)$ upto the scale of gauge group unification, upper bounds ensue on the magnitudes of the $B\!\!\!/$ coupling strengths at the supersymmetry breaking scale, independent of the model of unification. They turn out to be similar to the corresponding fixed point values reached from a wide range of $Y_i$ (including all $Y_i$ greater than unity) at the unification scale. The coupled evolution of the top and $B\!\!\!/$ Yukawa couplings results in a reduction of the fixed point value of the former.

Abstract:
We study the Higgs potentials in the Left-Right symmetric model for various choices of Higgs fields. We give emphasis to the cases when the Higgs field $ξ=(2,2,15)$ is included to give the correct relations of quark masses and a singlet field $η$ which breaks the left-right parity. As special cases we also include $ξ^\prime=(2,2,15)$ and $χ=(2,2,6)$ (which are interesting in the context of the three lepton decay mode of the proton) and field $δ=(3,3,0)$ none of which acquire {\it vev}. We show that the linear couplings of these fields upon minimization put fine tuning conditions on the parameters of the model. We carry out the minimization of these potentials explicitly. In all the cases the relationship between the {\it vev$\;$}s of the left and right handed triplets $v_L$ and $v_R$ are given. The phenomenological consequences of this minimization regarding the neutrino masses are also studied.

We consider an alternative to conventional GUTs originally proposed by Maiani, Parisi and Petronzio, where owing to the existence of extra fermion generations at some intermediate scale, the gauge couplings become large at high energies. We first comment on how the non- supersymmetric version of this scenario is ruled out; we then consider the two-loop evolution of the couplings in the supersymmetric extension of this scenario, and check whether such a scenario is feasible in the light of the precies values of couplings now available from LEP.
