In this paper we analyze the vacuum bosonic current and polarization induced by a magnetic flux running along a higher dimensional cosmic string in the presence of a flat boundary orthogonal to the string. In our analysis we assume that the quantum field obeys Dirichlet or Neunmann conditions on the flat boundary. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the corresponding Wightman function. As consequence of the boundary, the Wightamn function is expressed in term of two contributions: The first one corresponds to the boundary-free cosmic string Wightman function, while the second one is induced by the boundary. The boundary-induced contributions have opposite signs for Dirichlet and Newman scalars. Because the analysis of vacuum current and polarization effects in the boundary-free cosmic string spacetime have been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the calculations of the effects induced by the boundary. Regarding to the induced current, we show that, depending on the condition adopted, the boundary-induced azimuthal current can cancel or intensifies the total induced azimuthal current on the boundary; moreover, the boundary-induced azimuthal current is a periodic odd function of the magnetic flux. As to the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, the boundary-induced contributions are even functions of magnetic flux. In particular, we consider some special cases of the boundary-induced part of the energy density and evaluate the normal vacuum force on the boundary.

In this paper, we investigate the vacuum bosonic currents in the geometry of a compactified cosmic string in the background of the de Sitter spacetime. The currents are induced by magnetic fluxes, one running along the cosmic string and another one enclosed by the compact dimension. In order to develop this analysis, we obtain the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions obeying a quasiperiodicity condition. In this context, we calculate the azimuthal and axial current densities. Due to the quasiperiodicity condition, the quantum number associated with the compactification of the string along its axis becomes discrete, and we use the Abel-Plana summation formula to evaluate the non-vanishing current densities. We show that these quantities are explicitly decomposed into two contributions: one corresponds to the geometry of a straight uncompactified cosmic string and the other is induced by the compactification. We also compare the results with the literature in the case of a massive fermionic field in the same geometry.

There are also magnetic fluxes running along the cosmic string and enclosed by the compact dimension. Both, the FC and the VEV of the energy-momentum tensor, are decomposed into two parts: one induced by the cosmic string in dS spacetime considering the absence of the compactification, and another one induced by the compactification. In particular, we show that the FC vanishes for a massless fermionic field.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) associated with a charged scalar quantum field in a high-dimensional cosmic string spacetime admitting the presence of a magnetic flux running along the string's core. In addition, we also assume that the coordinate along the string's axis is compactified to a circle and presents an extra magnetic flux running along its center. This compactification is implemented by imposing a quasiperiodic condition on the field with an arbitrary phase $β$. The calculation of the VEV of the EMT and field squared, are developed by using the positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is constructed by the mode sum of the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions. Due to the compactification, two distinct contributions take place. The first one corresponds to the VEV in a cosmic string spacetime without compactification considering the magnetic interaction. So, this term presents a contribution due to the non-trivial topology of the conical space, and an additional contribution due to the interaction between the scalar field with the magnetic flux. The latter is a periodic function of the magnetic flux with period equal to the quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$, and corresponds to a Aharanov-Bhom type contribution. The second contribution is induced by the compactification itself and depends on the magnetic flux along the string's core. It is also an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the VEVs of the energy-momentum tensor and field squared are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

Using a sample of 31 main-sequence OB stars located between galactocentric distances 8.4 - 15.6 kpc, we aim to probe the present-day radial abundance gradients of the Galactic disk. The analysis is based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope on Las Campanas. We used a non-NLTE analysis in a self-consistent semi-automatic routine based on TLUSTY and SYNSPEC to determine atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances. Stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, projected rotational velocity, microturbulence, and macroturbulence) and silicon and oxygen abundances are presented for 28 stars located beyond 9 kpc from the Galactic centre plus three stars in the solar neighborhood. The stars of our sample are mostly on the main-sequence, with effective temperatures between 20800 - 31300 K, and surface gravities between 3.23 - 4.45 dex. The radial oxygen and silicon abundance gradients are negative and have slopes of -0.07 dex/kpc and -0.09 dex/kpc, respectively, in the region $8.4 \leq R_G \leq 15.6$\,kpc. The obtained gradients are compatible with the present-day oxygen and silicon abundances measured in the solar neighborhood and are consistent with radial metallicity gradients predicted by chemodynamical models of Galaxy Evolution for a subsample of young stars located close to the Galactic plane.

We investigate some consequences of a specific non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor on the physics of certain cosmic string configurations. This non-conservation is induced by a new gravitational theory recently introduced as an attempt to incorporate dissipative systems in the gravity description. This model of gravity is endowed with a variational principle, where an action-dependence on the geometric sector is assumed. For the Abelian-Higgs string we derive the dynamical equations and provide the numerical solutions describing the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields as well as the profile of the metric functions for different cases of the parameter that characterises the model. Additionally, from this numerical approach we find how the inner structure of the cosmic string is affected by this underlying gravitational theory, by analyzing the deviations both on the mass per unit length and the deficit angle of the string. Next, we proceed with an analytical treatment obtaining the solution close to the string axis and also the corresponding vacuum solution. Our analytical results are also complemented with the study of a thick cosmic string model, where the defect is endowed with finite core. In this case we have obtained the proper interior solution which joined together with the vacuum metric outside provides an exact solution for the exterior geometry which generalizes previous results and leads to a decreasing of the mass per unit length of the cosmic string.

In this article, we present a denoising algorithm to improve the interpretation and quality of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. Given the high level of self-similarity of STM images, we propose a denoising algorithm by reformulating the true estimation problem as a sparse regression, often termed sparse coding. We introduce modifications to the algorithm to cope with the existence of artifacts, mainly dropouts, which appear in a structured way as consecutive line segments on the scanning direction. The resulting algorithm treats the artifacts as missing data, and the estimated values outperform those algorithms that substitute the outliers by a local filtering. We provide code implementations for both Matlab and Gwyddion.

In order to develop this analysis we calculate the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions obeying a quasiperiodicity condition, with arbitrary phase $β$, along the compactified dimension. In this context, only azimuthal and axial currents densities take place. As to the azimuthal current, two contributions appear. The first contribution corresponds to the standard azimuthal current in a cosmic string spacetime without compactification, while the second contribution is a new one, induced by the compactification itself. The latter is an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis and is an odd function of the magnetic flux along its core with period equal to quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$. On the other hand, the nonzero axial current density is an even function of the magnetic flux along the core of the string and an odd function of the magnetic flux enclosed by it. We also find that the axial current density vanishes for untwisted and twisted bosonic fields in the absence of the magnetic flux enclosed by the string axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the current density are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

We study pulse propagation along decorated tapered granular chains without precompression. Our goal is to generalize the results obtained in our previous work, by analyzing a decorated chain with an arbitrary number of small grains between the large ones. Making use of an effective description, where the original decorated tapered chain is replaced by a non-decorated tapered chain with effective masses interacting via an effective potential, and applying the binary collisions approximation, we calculate the residence time of the pulse on each effective large grain. We also present the comparison between the numerical integration of the equations of motion and our analytical predictions which show the agreement to be very good for the pulse velocity, albeit only qualitatively for the velocity of the grains.

Projected rotational velocities (vsini) are presented for a sample of 350 early B-type main sequence stars in the nearby Galactic disk. The stars are located within ~1.5 kpc from the Sun, and the great majority within 700 pc. The analysis is based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.Spectral types were estimated based on relative intensities of some key line absorption ratios and comparisons to synthetic spectra. Effective temperatures were estimated from the reddening-free Q index, and projected rotational velocities were then determined via interpolation on a published grid that correlates the synthetic full width at half maximum of the He I lines at 4026, 4388 and 4471 A with vsini. As the sample has been selected solely on the basis of spectral types it contains an selection of B stars in the field, in clusters, and in OB associations. The vsini distribution obtained for the entire sample is found to be essentially flat for vsini values between 0-150 km/s, with only a modest peak at low projected rotational velocities. Considering subsamples of stars, there appears to be a gradation in the vsini distribution with the field stars presenting a larger fraction of the slow rotators and the cluster stars distribution showing an excess of stars with vsini between 70 and 130 km/s. Furthermore, for a subsample of potential runaway stars we find that the vsini distribution resembles the distribution seen in denser environments, which could suggest that these runaway stars have been subject to dynamical ejection mechanisms.

We studied the relationship between the average stellar abundance of several elements and the orbital evolution of stars in the neighbourhood of the Sun, using both observational data for 325 late-type dwarfs in a volume-complete sample and simulations of the orbital diffusion. Metallicities, ages, and initial position and velocities for the simulated stars are sampled from empirical distributions of these quantities in the Milky Way. We found that that there is a relationship between the average stellar abundance of Fe, Na, Si, Ca, Ni, and Ba and the mean orbital radius of stars currently passing through the solar neighbourhood. The greater the difference between the mean orbital radius and the solar Galactocentric distance, the more deficient the star is, on average, in these chemical species. The stars that take a longer time to come from their birthplaces to arrive in the present solar neighbourhood are more likely to be more metal-poor than those that were born here. This result is a direct, independent indication that a tightly defined Galactic age-metallicity relation exists.
