Emittance preservation in a plasma-wakefield accelerator
Abstract: Radio-frequency particle accelerators are engines of discovery, powering high-energy physics and photon science, but are also large and expensive due to their limited accelerating fields. Plasma-wakefield accelerators (PWFAs) provide orders-of-magnitude stronger fields in the charge-density wave behind a particle bunch travelling in a plasma, promising particle accelerators of greatly reduced size… ▽ More

Jumps and cusps: a new revival effect in local dispersive PDEs
Abstract: We study the presence of a non-trivial revival effect in the solution of linear dispersive boundary value problems for two benchmark models which arise in applications: the Airy equation and the dislocated Laplacian Schr{ö}dinger equation. In both cases, we consider boundary conditions of Dirichlet-type. We prove that, at suitable times, jump discontinuities in the initial profile are revived in t… ▽ More

The pseudospectrum of an operator with Bessel-type singularities

The phenomenon of revivals on complex potential Schrödinger's equation
Abstract: The mysterious phenomena of revivals in linear dispersive periodic equations was discovered first experimentally in optics in the 19th century, then rediscovered several times by theoretical and experimental investigations. Energy Depletion and Re-Acceleration of Driver Electrons in a Plasma-Wakefield Accelerator
Abstract: For plasma-wakefield accelerators to fulfil their potential for cost effectiveness, it is essential that their energy-transfer efficiency be maximized. A key aspect of this efficiency is the near-complete transfer of energy, or depletion, from the driver electrons to the plasma wake. Achieving full depletion is limited by the process of re-acceleration, which occurs when the driver electrons decel… ▽ More

Stability of Quadratic Projection Methods
Abstract: In this paper we discuss the stability of an alternative pollution-free procedure for computing spectra. The main difference with the Galerkin method lies in the fact that it gives rise to a weak approximate problem which is quadratic in the spectral parameter, instead of linear. Previous accounts on this new procedure can be found in Levitin and Shargorodsky (2002) [math.SP/0212087] and Boulton… ▽ More

On Pseudospectra of Matrix Polynomials and their Boundaries
Abstract: In the first part of this paper, the main concern is with smoothness properties of the boundary of the pseudospectrum of a matrix polynomial. In the second part, results are obtained concerning the number of connected components of pseudospectra, as well as results concerning matrix polynomials with multiple eigenvalues, or the proximity to such polynomials.

Non-variational approximation of discrete eigenvalues of self-adjoint operators
Abstract: We establish sufficiency conditions in order to achieve approximation to discrete eigenvalues of self-adjoint operators in the second-order projection method suggested recently by Levitin and Shargorodsky, [math.SP/0212087]. We find explicit estimates for the eigenvalue error and study in detail two concrete model examples. Our results show that, unlike the majority of the standard methods, seco… ▽ More

The heat kernel of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial winding
Abstract: We study the quantization of the regularized hamiltonian, $H$, of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial winding. By showing that $H$ is a relatively small perturbation of the bosonic hamiltonian, we construct a Dyson series for the heat kernel of $H$ and prove its convergence in the topology of the von Neumann-Schatten classes so that $e^{-Ht}$ is ensured to be of finite trace. Th… ▽ More

Finite lifetime eigenfunctions of coupled systems of harmonic oscillators
Abstract: We find a Hermite-type basis for which the eigenvalue problem associated to the operator $H_{A,B}:=B(-\partial_x^2)+Ax^2$ acting on $L^2({\bf R};{\bf C}^2)$ becomes a three-terms recurrence. Here $A$ and $B$ are two constant positive definite matrices with no other restriction. Our main result provides an explicit characterization of the eigenvectors of $H_{A,B}$ that lie in the span of the firs… ▽ More
