In engineering practice, it is often necessary to increase the effectiveness of existing protective constructions for ports and coasts (i. e. breakwaters) by extending their configuration, because existing configurations don't provide the appropriate environmental conditions. That extension task can be considered as an optimisation problem. In the paper, the multi-objective evolutionary approach for the breakwaters optimisation is proposed. Also, a greedy heuristic is implemented and included to algorithm, that allows achieving the appropriate solution faster. The task of the identification of the attached breakwaters optimal variant that provides the safe ship parking and manoeuvring in large Black Sea Port of Sochi has been used as a case study. The results of the experiments demonstrated the possibility to apply the proposed multi-objective evolutionary approach in real-world engineering problems. It allows identifying the Pareto-optimal set of the possible configuration, which can be analysed by decision makers and used for final construction

Contemporary tasks of complex system simulation are often related to the issue of uncertainty management. It comes from the lack of information or knowledge about the simulated system as well as from restrictions of the model set being used. One of the powerful tools for the uncertainty management is ensemble-based simulation, which uses variation in input or output data, model parameters, or available versions of models to improve the simulation performance. Furthermore the system of models for complex system simulation (especially in case of hiring ensemble-based approach) can be considered as a complex system. As a result, the identification of the complex model's structure and parameters provide additional sources of uncertainty to be managed. Within the presented work we are develo** a conceptual and technological approach to manage the ensemble-based simulation taking into account changing states of both simulated system and system of models within the ensemble-based approach. The states of these systems are considered as a subject of classification with consequent inference of better strategies for ensemble evolution over the simulation time and ensemble aggregation. Here the ensemble evolution enables implementation of dynamic reactive solutions which can automatically conform to the changing states of both systems. The ensemble aggregation can be considered within a scope of averaging (regression way) or selection (classification way, which complement the classification mentioned earlier) approach. The technological basis for such approach includes ensemble-based simulation techniques using domain-specific software combined within a composite application; data science approaches for analysis of available datasets (simulation data, observations, situation assessment etc.); and machine learning algorithms for classes identification, ensemble management and knowledge acquisition.

We present a decision support system for flood early warning and disaster management. It includes the models for data-driven meteorological predictions, for simulation of atmospheric pressure, wind, long sea waves and seiches; a module for optimization of flood barrier gates operation; models for stability assessment of levees and embankments, for simulation of city inundation dynamics and citizens evacuation scenarios. The novelty of this paper is a coupled distributed simulation of surface and subsurface flows that can predict inundation of low-lying inland zones far from the submerged waterfront areas, as observed in St. Petersburg city during the floods. All the models are wrapped as software services in the CLAVIRE platform for urgent computing, which provides workflow management and resource orchestration.

The criminal nature of narcotics complicates the direct assessment of a drug community, while having a good understanding of the type of people drawn or currently using drugs is vital for finding effective intervening strategies. Especially for the Russian Federation this is of immediate concern given the dramatic increase it has seen in drug abuse since the fall of the Soviet Union in the early nineties. Using unique data from the Russian social network 'LiveJournal' with over 39 million registered users worldwide, we were able for the first time to identify the on-line drug community by context sensitive text mining of the users' blogs using a dictionary of known drug-related official and 'slang' terminology. By comparing the interests of the users that most actively spread information on narcotics over the network with the interests of the individuals outside the on-line drug community, we found that the 'average' drug user in the Russian Federation is generally mostly interested in topics such as Russian rock, non-traditional medicine, UFOs, Buddhism, yoga and the occult. We identify three distinct scale-free sub-networks of users which can be uniquely classified as being either 'infectious', 'susceptible' or 'immune'.

Modeling spreading processes in complex random networks plays an essential role in understanding and prediction of many real phenomena like epidemics or rumor spreading. The dynamics of such systems may be represented algorithmically by Monte-Carlo simulations on graphs or by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Despite many results in the area of network modeling the selection of the best computational representation of the model dynamics remains a challenge. While a closed form description is often straightforward to derive, it generally cannot be solved analytically; as a consequence the network dynamics requires a numerical solution of the ODEs or a direct Monte-Carlo simulation on the networks. Moreover, Monte-Carlo simulations and ODE solutions are not equivalent since ODEs produce a deterministic solution while Monte-Carlo simulations are stochastic by nature. Despite some recent advantages in Monte-Carlo simulations, particularly in the flexibility of implementation, the computational cost of an ODE solution is much lower and supports accurate and detailed output analysis such as uncertainty or sensitivity analyses, parameter identification etc. In this paper we propose a novel approach to model spreading processes in complex random heterogeneous networks using systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We successfully apply this approach to predict the dynamics of HIV-AIDS spreading in sexual networks, and compare it to historical data.

With the exponential growth in the world population and the constant increase in human mobility, the danger of outbreaks of epidemics is rising. Especially in high density urban areas such as public transport and transfer points, where people come in close proximity of each other, we observe a dramatic increase in the transmission of airborne viruses and related pathogens. It is essential to have a good understanding of the `transmission highways' in such areas, in order to prevent or to predict the spreading of infectious diseases. The approach we take is to combine as much information as is possible, from all relevant sources and integrate this in a simulation environment that allows for scenario testing and decision support. In this paper we lay out a novel approach to study Urban Airborne Disease spreading by combining traffic information, with geo-spatial data, infection dynamics and spreading characteristics.

The transmission through contacts among MSM (men who have sex with men) is one of the dominating contributors to HIV prevalence in industrialized countries. In Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, the MSM risk group has been traced for decades. This has motivated studies which provide detailed information about MSM's risk behavior statistically, psychologically and sociologically. Despite the era of potent antiretroviral therapy, the incidence of HIV among MSM increases. In the long term the contradictory effects of risk behavior and effective therapy are still poorly understood. Using a previously presented Complex Agent Network model, we describe steady and casual partnerships to predict the HIV spreading among MSM. Behavior-related parameters and values, inferred from studies on Amsterdam MSM, are fed into the model; we validate the model using historical yearly incidence data. Subsequently, we study scenarios to assess the contradictory effects of risk behavior and effective therapy, by varying corresponding values of parameters. Finally, we conduct quantitative analysis based on the resulting incidence data. The simulated incidence reproduces the ACS historical incidence well and helps to predict the HIV epidemic among MSM in Amsterdam. Our results show that in the long run the positive influence of effective therapy can be outweighed by an increase in risk behavior of at least 30% for MSM. Conclusion: We recommend, based on the model predictions, that lowering risk behavior is the prominent control mechanism of HIV incidence even in the presence of effective therapy.
