Conic bundles with nontrivial unramified Brauer group over threefolds
Abstract: We derive a formula for the unramified Brauer group of a general class of rationally connected fourfolds birational to conic bundles over smooth threefolds. We produce new examples of conic bundles over P^3 where this formula applies and which have nontrivial unramified Brauer group. The construction uses the theory of contact surfaces and, at least implicitly, matrix factorizations and symmetric… ▽ More

The transcendental lattice of the sextic Fermat surface
Abstract: We prove that the integral polarized Hodge structure on the transcendental lattice of a sextic Fermat surface is decomposable. This disproves a conjecture of Kulikov related to a Hodge theoretic approach to proving the irrationality of the very general cubic fourfold.

A survey of the Poincaré Center Problem in degree 3 using finite field heuristics
Abstract: We compare a heuristic count of components of the center variety in degree 3 with the equivalent count obtained from known families. From this comparison we conjecture that more than 100 unknown components exist.

On the rationality of the moduli space of Lüroth quartics
Abstract: We prove that the moduli space M_L of L"uroth quartics in P^2, i.e. the space of quartics which can be circumscribed around a complete pentagon of lines modulo the action of PGL_3(CC) is rational, as is the related moduli space of Bateman seven-tuples of points in P^2.

A Clebsch-Gordan formula for SL_3 and applications to rationality
Abstract: If R, S, T are irreducible SL_3-representations, we give an easy and explicit description of a basis of the space of equivariant maps from R tensor S to T. We apply this method to the rationality problem for invariant function fields. In particular, we prove the rationality of the moduli space of plane curves of degree 34. This uses a criterion which ensures the stable rationality of some quotie… ▽ More

Low-dimensional Singularities with Free Divisors as Discriminants
Abstract: We present versal complex analytic families, over a smooth base and of fibre dimension zero, one, or two, where the discriminant constitutes a free divisor. These families include finite flat maps, versal deformations of reduced curve singularities, and versal deformations of Gorenstein surface singularities in C^5. It is shown that such free divisors often admit a "fast normalization", obtained… ▽ More

Classification of rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11 in P^4
Abstract: We use the BGG-correspondence to show that there are at most three possible Hilbert functions for smooth rational surfaces of degree 11 and sectional genus 11. Surfaces with one of these Hilbert functions have been classified by Popescu. The classification for a second one is done in this paper. For the third Hilbert function the classification is still open.

Experimental results for the Poincaré center problem (including an Appendix with Martin Cremer)
Abstract: We apply a heuristic method based on counting points over finite fields to the Poincaré center problem. We show that this method gives the correct results for homogeneous non linearities of degree 2 and 3. Also we obtain new evidence for Zoladek's conjecture about general degree 3 non linearities

Generic Syzygy Schemes
Abstract: For a finite dimensional vector space G we define the k-th generic syzygy scheme Gensyz_k(G) by explicit equations. We show that the syzygy scheme Syz(f) of any syzygy in the linear strand of a projective variety X which is cut out by quadrics is a cone over a linear section of a corresponding generic syzygy scheme. We also give a geometric description of Gensyz_k(G) for k=0,1,2. In particular G… ▽ More

Significance of log-periodic signatures in cumulative noise
Abstract: Using methods introduced by Scargle in 1978 we derive a cumulative version of the Lomb periodogram that exhibits frequency independent statistics when applied to cumulative noise. We show how this cumulative Lomb periodogram allows us to estimate the significance of log-periodic signatures in the S&P 500 anti-bubble that started in August 2000.
