We investigate phonon lifetimes in VO2 single crystals. We do so in the metallic state above the metal-insulator transition (MIT), where strong structural fluctuations are known to take place. By combining inelastic X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy, we track the temperature dependence of several acoustic and optical phonon modes up to 1000 K. Contrary to what is commonly observed, we find that phonon lifetimes decrease with decreasing temperature. Our results show that pre-transitional fluctuations in the metallic state give rise to strong electron-phonon scattering that onsets hundreds of degrees above the transition and increases as the MIT is approached. Notably, this effect is not limited to specific points of reciprocal space that could be associated with the structural transition.

Barium zirconate (BaZrO$_3$) is one of the very few perovskites that is claimed to retain an average cubic structure down to \SI{0}{\K}, while being energetically very close to an antiferrodistortive phase obtained by condensation of a soft phonon mode at the R point of the Brillouin zone boundary. In this work, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the temperature dependence of this soft phonon mode. Inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements on single crystals show that it softens substantially from \SI{9.4}{\meV} at room temperature to \SI{5.6}{\meV} at \SI{2}{\K}. In contrast, the acoustic mode at the same R point is nearly temperature independent. The effect of the anharmonicity on the lattice dynamics is investigated non-perturbatively using direct dynamic simulations as well as a first-principles based self-consistent phonon theory, including quantum fluctuations of the atomic motion. By adding cubic and quartic anharmonic force constants, quantitative agreement with the neutron data for the temperature dependence of the antiferrodistortive mode is obtained. The quantum fluctuations of the atomic motion are found to be important to obtain the proper temperature dependence at low temperatures. The mean squared displacements of the different atoms are determined as function of temperature and are shown to be consistent with available experimental data. Adding anharmonicity to the computed fluctuations of the Ba-O distances also improves the comparison with available EXAFS data at \SI{300}{\K}.

Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

We report that the lowest energy transverse-optic phonon in metallic SnTe softens to near zero energy at the structural transition at $T_C=75 \text{~K}$ and importantly show that the energy of this mode below $T_C$ increases as the temperature decreases. Since the mode is a polar displacement this proves unambiguously that SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric displacement below $T_C$. Concentration gradients and imperfect stoichiometry in large crystals may explain why this was not seen in previous inelastic neutron scattering studies. Despite SnTe being metallic we find that the ferroelectric transition is similar to that in ferroelectric insulators, unmodified by the presence of conduction electrons: we find that (i) the dam** of the polar mode is dominated by coupling to acoustic phonons rather than electron-phonon coupling (ii) the transition is almost an ideal continuous transition (iii) comparison with density functional calculations identifies the importance of dipolar-dipolar screening for understanding this behaviour.

Superconducting MgB$\_2$ shows an E$\_{2g}$ zone center phonon, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, that is very broad in energy and temperature dependent. The Raman shift and lifetime show large differences with the values elsewhere in the Brillouin Zone measured by Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS), where its dispersion can be accounted for by standard harmonic phonon theory, adding only a moderate electron-phonon coupling. Here we show that the effects rapidly disappear when electron-phonon coupling is switched off by Al substitution on the Mg sites. Moreover, using IXS with very high wave-vector resolution in MgB$\_2$, we can follow the dispersion connecting the Raman and the IXS signal, in agreement with a theory using only electron-phonon coupling but without strong anharmonic terms. The observation is important in order to understand the effects of electron-phonon coupling on zone center phonons modes in MgB$\_2$, but also in all metals characterized by a small Fermi velocity in a particular direction, typical for layered compounds.

We present a study of the lattice dynamical properties of superconducting SrPt$_3$P ($T_c = 8.4$ K) via high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) and ab initio calculations. Density functional perturbation theory including spin-orbit coupling (SOC) results in enhanced electron-phonon coupling (EPC) for the optic phonon modes originating from the Pt(I) atoms, with energies $\sim 5$ meV, resulting in a large EPC constant $λ\sim 2$. An overall softening of the IXS powder spectra occurs from room to low temperatures, consistent with the predicted strong EPC and with recent specific-heat experiments ($2Δ_0 / k_{\mathrm{B}}T_c \sim 5$). The low-lying phonon modes observed in the experiments are approximately 1.5 meV harder than the corresponding calculated phonon branch. Moreover, we do not find any changes in the spectra upon entering the superconducting phase. We conclude that current theoretical calculations underestimate the energy of the lowest band of phonon modes indicating that the coupling of these modes to the electronic subsystem is overestimated.

A quite unusual diffuse scattering phenomenology was observed in the single-crystal X-ray diffraction pattern of cubic perovskite BMT ($\mathrm{BaMg}_{1/3}\mathrm{Ta}_{2/3}\mathrm{O}_3$). The intensity of the scattering is parametrized as a set of cube-like objects located at the centers of reciprocal space unit cells, resembling very broad and cubic-shaped (1/2,1/2,1/2)-satellites. BMT belongs to perovskites of formula AB$'_{1/3}$B$"_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (A=Mg, B$'=$Ta, B$"=$Mg). The cubes of the intensity can be attributed to the partial correlations of the occupancies of the B site. The pair correlation function is the Fourier transform of the diffuse scattering intensity and the latter's idealized form yields the unusual property of a power-law correlation decay with distance. Up to now this is observed only in a few exotic instances of magnetic order or nematic crystals. Therefore it cannot be classified as a short-range order phenomenon, as in most situations originating diffuse scattering. A Monte-Carlo search in configuration space yielded solutions that reproduce faithfully the observed diffuse scattering. Analysis of the results in terms of the electrostatic energy and the entropy point to this phase of BMT as a metastable state, kinetically locked, which could be the equilibrium state just below the melting point.

We report a detailed study of specific heat, electrical resistivity and thermal expansion in combination with inelastic neutron and inelastic X-ray scattering to investigate the origin of superconductivity in the two silicon clathrate superconductors Ba8Si46 and Ba24Si100. Both compounds have a similar structure based on encaged barium atoms in oversized silicon cages. However, the transition temperatures are rather different: 8 K and 1.5 K respectively. By extracting the superconducting properties, phonon density of states, electron-phonon coupling function and phonon anharmonicity from these measurements we discuss the important factors governing Tc and explain the difference between the two compounds.

We study anharmonic effects in MgB2 by comparing Inelastic X-ray and Ramanscattering together with ab-initio calculations. Using high statistics and high q resolution measurements we show that the E2g mode linewidth is independent of temperature along Gamma-A. We show, contrary to previous claims, that the Raman-peak energy decreases as a function of increasing temperature, a behaviour inconsistent with all the anharmonic ab-initio calculations of the E2g mode at Gamma available in literature. These findings and the excellent agreement between the X-ray measured and ab-initio calculated phonon spectra suggest that anharmonicity is not the main mechanism determining the temperature behaviour of the Raman-peak energy. The Raman E2g peak position and linewidth can be explained by large dynamical effects in the phonon self-energy. In light of the present findings, the commonly accepted explanation of the reduced isotope effect in terms of anharmonic effects needs to be reconsidered.

The measured phonon dispersion along the $Γ-M$ direction show a marked softening with hole do** of two optical phonon branches close to the Brillouin zone boundary. The phonon spectra, dispersion, and softening are well reproduced by first-principle calculations. The calculations indicates that the soft branches are mainly composed of Co-vibration modes. The estimation of the critical temperature based on electron-phonon coupling mechanism undisputedly points to a non-conventional superconducting state in this material.
