Monoclinic semi-metallic Mo$_8$O$_{23}$ belongs to a multifunctional series of compounds showing multiple ordering phenomena that have not achieved much attention till now. Previous X-rays studies of this compound have revealed an incommensurate ordering transition at $T_{\mathrm{IC}}\sim350$ K, followed by a structural transition to commensurate order at $T_{\mathrm{IC-C}}=285$ K. In addition, an enigmatic resistance maximum is observed at $T_{\mathrm{el}}\sim150$ K, whose origin has so far proved elusive. Aiming to disentangle these multiple orders we use the polarized transient optical spectroscopy supplemented by Raman spectroscopy to study the electronic relaxation dynamics and lattice vibrational modes in Mo$_8$O$_{23}$ single crystals. Remarkably, both the coherent vibrational mode response and single particle response display extrema of dam**/relaxation times close to $T_{\mathrm{el}}$ with the concurrent appearance of new coherent vibrational modes and a characteristic polarization asymmetry which saturates below $T_{\mathrm{el}}$. The single-particle relaxation data analysis shows the appearance of a temperature-independent gap in the electronic excitation spectrum below $T_{\mathrm{IC}}$ and additional temperature-dependent gap opening near $T_{\mathrm{el}}$. Concurrently, a low frequency vibrational mode shows anomalous softening around $T_{\mathrm{m}}\sim200$ K, far below $T_{\mathrm{IC-C}}$ and $T_{\mathrm{IC}}$. The observations are interpreted in terms of the appearance of a hidden gapped state below $T_{\mathrm{el}}$ that has so far eluded detection by structural analyses.

The impulsive generation of two-magnon modes in antiferromagnets by femtosecond optical pulses, so-called femto-nanomagnons, leads to coherent longitudinal oscillations of the antiferromagnetic order parameter that cannot be described by a thermodynamic Landau-Lifshitz approach. We argue that this dynamics is triggered as a result of a laser-induced modification of the exchange interaction. In order to describe the oscillations we have formulated a quantum mechanical description in terms of magnon pair operators and coherent states. Such an approach allowed us to} derive an effective macroscopic equation of motion for the temporal evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. An implication of the latter is that the photo-induced spin dynamics represents a macroscopic entanglement of pairs of magnons with femtosecond period and nanometer wavelength. By performing magneto-optical pump-probe experiments with 10 femtosecond resolution in the cubic KNiF$_3$ and the uniaxial K$_2$NiF$_4$ collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets, we observed coherent oscillations at the frequency of 22 THz and 16 THz, respectively. The detected frequencies as a function of the temperature ideally fit the two-magnon excitation up to the Néel point. The experimental signals are described as dynamics of magnetic linear dichroism due to longitudinal oscillations of the antiferromagnetic vector.

All optical femtosecond relaxation dynamics in a single crystal of mono-phosphate tungsten bronze (PO$_{2}$)$_{4}$(WO$_{3}$)$_{2m}$ with alternate stacking m=6 of WO$_{3}$ layers was studied through the three consequent charge density wave (CDW) transitions. Several transient coherent collective modes associated to the different CDW transitions were observed and analyzed in the framework of the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. Remarkably, the interference of the modes leads to an apparent rectification effect in the transient reflectivity response. A saturation of the coherent-mode amplitudes with increasing pump fluence well below the CDWs destruction threshold fluence indicates a decoupling of the electronic and lattice parts of the order parameter under strong optical drive.

The two-dimensional semiconductor MoS2 in its mono- and few-layer form is expected to have a significant exciton binding energy of several 100 meV, leading to the consensus that excitons are the primary photoexcited species. Nevertheless, even single layers show a strong photovoltaic effect and work as the active material in high sensitivity photodetectors, thus indicating efficient charge carrier photogeneration (CPG). Here we use continuous wave photomodulation spectroscopy to identify the optical signature of long-lived charge carriers and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to follow the CPG dynamics. We find that intitial photoexcitation yields a branching between excitons and charge carriers, followed by excitation energy dependent hot exciton dissociation as an additional CPG mechanism. Based on these findings, we make simple suggestions for the design of more efficient MoS2 photovoltaic and photodetector devices.
