Neutral hydrogen has been shown to greatly impact the plasma flow in the heliopshere and the location of the heliospheric boundaries. We present the results of the Solar-wind with Hydrogen Ion Exchange and Large-scale Dynamics (SHIELD) model, a new, self-consistent, kinetic-MHD model of the outer heliosphere within the Space Weather Modeling Framework. The charge-exchange mean free path is on order of the size of the heliosphere; therefore, the neutral atoms cannot be described as a fluid. The SHIELD model couples the MHD solution for a single plasma fluid to the kinetic solution from for neutral hydrogen atoms streaming through the system. The kinetic code is based on the Adaptive Mesh Particle Simulator (AMPS), a Monte Carlo method for solving the Boltzmann equation. The SHIELD model accurately predicts the increased filtration of interstellar neutrals into the heliosphere. In order to verify the correct implementation within the model, we compare the results of the SHIELD model to other, well-established kinetic-MHD models. The SHIELD model matches the neutral hydrogen solution of these studies as well as the shift in all heliospheric boundaries closer to the Sun in comparison the the multi-fluid treatment of the neutral hydrogen atoms. Overall the SHIELD model shows excellent agreement to these models and is a significant improvement to the fluid treatment of interstellar hydrogen.

The first two orbits of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft have enabled the first in situ measurements of the solar wind down to a heliocentric distance of 0.17 au (or 36 Rs). Here, we present an analysis of this data to study solar wind turbulence at 0.17 au and its evolution out to 1 au. While many features remain similar, key differences at 0.17 au include: increased turbulence energy levels by more than an order of magnitude, a magnetic field spectral index of -3/2 matching that of the velocity and both Elsasser fields, a lower magnetic compressibility consistent with a smaller slow-mode kinetic energy fraction, and a much smaller outer scale that has had time for substantial nonlinear processing. There is also an overall increase in the dominance of outward-propagating Alfvénic fluctuations compared to inward-propagating ones, and the radial variation of the inward component is consistent with its generation by reflection from the large-scale gradient in Alfvén speed. The energy flux in this turbulence at 0.17 au was found to be ~10% of that in the bulk solar wind kinetic energy, becoming ~40% when extrapolated to the Alfvén point, and both the fraction and rate of increase of this flux towards the Sun is consistent with turbulence-driven models in which the solar wind is powered by this flux.

Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) possess a high destructive potential as they pose multiple radiation hazards on Earth and onboard spacecrafts. The present work continues a series started with the paper by Borovikov et al.(2018) describing a computational tool to simulate and, potentially, predict the SEP threat based on the observations of the Sun. Here we present the kinetic model coupled with the globalMHD model for the Solar Corona (SC) and Inner Heliosphere (IH), which was described in the first paper in the series. At the heart of the coupled model is a self-consistent treatment of the Alfven wave turbulence. The turbulence not only heats corona, powers and accelerates the solar wind, but also serves as the main agent to scatter the SEPs and thus controls their acceleration and transport. The universal character of the turbulence in the coupled model provides a realistic description of the SEP transport by using the level of turbulence as validated with the solar wind and coronal plasma observations. At the same time, the SEP observations at 1 AU can be used to validate the model for turbulence in the IH, since the observed SEPs have witnessed this turbulence on their way through the IH.

Radio observations grant access to a wide range of physical processes through different emission mechanisms. These processes range from thermal and quiescent to eruptive phenomena, such as shock waves and particle beams. We present a new synthetic radio imaging tool that calculates and visualizes the Bremsstrahlung radio emission. This tool works concurrently with state-of-the-art Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar corona using the code BATS-R-US. Our model produces results that are in good agreement with both high and low frequency observations of the solar disk. In this study, a ray-tracing algorithm is used and the radio intensity is computed along the actual curved ray trajectories. We illustrate the importance of refraction in locating the radio emitting source by comparison of the radio imaging illustrations when the line-of-sight instead of the refracted paths are considered. We are planning to incorporate non-thermal radio emission mechanisms in a future version of the radio imaging tool.

Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) are an important aspect of space weather. SEP events posses a high destructive potential, since they may cause disruptions of communication systems on Earth and be fatal to crew members onboard spacecrafts and, in extreme cases, harmful to people onboard high altitude flights. However, currently the research community lacks efficient tools to predict such hazardous threat and its potential impacts. Such a tool is a first step for mankind to improve its preparedness for SEP events and ultimately to be able to mitigate their effects. The main goal of the presented research effort is to develop a computational tool that will have the forecasting capability and can be serve in operational system that will provide live information on the current potential threats posed by SEP based on the observations of the Sun. In the present paper the fundamentals of magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) simulations are discussed to be employed as a critical part of the desired forecasting system.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), a kind of energetic solar eruptions, are an integral subject of space weather research. Numerical magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modeling, which requires powerful computational resources, is one of the primary means of studying the phenomenon. With increasing accessibility of such resources, grows the demand for user-friendly tools that would facilitate the process of simulating CMEs for scientific and operational purposes. The Eruptive Event Generator based on Gibson-Low flux rope (EEGGL), a new publicly available computational model presented in this paper, is an effort to meet this demand. EEGGL allows one to compute the parameters of a model flux rope driving a CME via an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI). We provide a brief overview of the physical principles behind EEGGL and its functionality. Ways towards future improvements of the tool are outlined.

In this paper we present a second-order and continuous interpolation algorithm for cell-centered adaptive-mesh-refinement (AMR) grids. Continuity requirement poses a non-trivial problem at resolution changes. We develop a classification of the resolution changes, which allows us to employ efficient and simple linear interpolation in the majority of the computational domain. The benefit of such approach is higher efficiency. The algorithm is well suited for massively parallel computations. Our interpolation algorithm allows extracting jump-free interpolated data distribution along lines and surfaces within the computational domain. This capability is important for various applications, including kinetic particles tracking in three dimensional vector fields, visualization (i.e. surface extraction) and extracting variables along one-dimensional curves such as field lines, streamlines and satellite trajectories, etc. Particular examples of the latter are models for acceleration of solar energetic particles (SEPs) along magnetic field-lines. As such models are sensitive to sharp gradients and discontinuities the capability to interpolate the data from the AMR grid to be passed to the SEP model without producing false gradients numerically becomes crucial. The code implementation of our algorithm is publicly available as a Fortran 90 library.

Pecularities of isentropic expansion of warm dense matter (WDM) created by intense energy fluxes are under discussion in situation when thermodynamic trajectory of such expansion crosses binodal of liquid-gas phase transition and expansion within two-phase region is going along equilibrium branch of the isentrope for two-phase mixture . It is known for the case of plane geometry (Anisimov, Inogamov et al. 1999) that because of sharp break of the expansion isoentrope at boiling point there appears extended zone (liquid layer) of uniformity for expanding material with constant thermodynamic and kinematic parameters, which corresponds to the state on binodal. General properties of such boiling (binodal) layer were claimed and discussed before for the cases of isentropic expansion of infinite sample as well as for finite plane and spherical samples (slab and ball) and for the system of well positioned slabs (stuck target). Thermodynamic and kinematic parameters of discussed binodal layer are studied in present paper with the use of simplest Van der Waals equation of state (EOS). Advantage of VdW-EOS is possibility of demonstrable and semi-analytical description of thermo- and hydrodynamics of the process. Current work studies phenomenon in planar case of isentropic expansion of finite sized layer (slab) of VdW-matter.

Advan- tage of this EOS is possibility of demonstrable and semi-analytical descrip- tion of thermo- and hydrodynamics of the process. Idealized self-similar case of behavior of matter on interception of equilibrium (not metastable) isoentropic curve and boundary of gas-liquid coexistence curve (binodal) is analyzed. The possibility of formation of such "liquid layer" was studied previously in [1] during solving the problem of ablation of metal surface under the action of strong laser radiation. Peculiarity of such "freezing" of finite portion of expanding matter in the state, which corresponds to the binodal of gas-liquid or/and other phase transitions|so called "phase freezeout"and prospects of applications of this phenomenon for intended generation of uniform and extensive zone of previously unexplored states of matter were discussed in [2].
