Achieving fundamental understanding of insulator-to-metal transitions (IMTs) in strongly correlated systems and their persistent and reversible control via nonequilibrium drive are prime targets of current condensed matter research. Photoinduced switching between competing orders in correlated insulators requires a free-energy landscape with nearly degenerate ground states, which is commonly reached through do**, strain, or static electric field. The associated spatial inhomogeneity leads to a photoinduced phase transition that remains confined near the illuminated region. Here we report optical spectroscopy experiments at the first-order IMT in the 4d-electron compound Ca$_3$(Ru$_{0.99}$Ti$_{0.01}$)$_2$O$_7$ and show that specific Ru d-d interband transitions excited by light with a threshold fluence corresponding to the planar density of Ru atoms can trigger reversible, avalanche-like coherent propagation of phase interfaces across the full extent of a macroscopic sample, in the absence of assisting external stimuli. Based on detailed comparison of spectroscopic data to density functional calculations, we attribute the extraordinary photo-sensitivity of the IMT to an exceptionally shallow free-energy landscape generated by the confluence of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions. Our findings suggest Ca$_3$(Ru$_{0.99}$Ti$_{0.01}$)$_2$O$_7$ as an ideal model system for building and testing a theory of Mott transition dynamics in the presence of strong electron-lattice coupling and may pave the way towards nanoscale devices with quantum-level photosensitivity.

When spin-orbit-entangled $d$-electrons reside on a honeycomb lattice, rich quantum states are anticipated to emerge, as exemplified by the $d^5$ Kitaev materials. Distinct yet equally intriguing physics may be realized with a $d$-electron count other than $d^5$. We found that the layered ruthenate Ag$_3$LiRu$_2$O$_6$ with $d^4$ Ru$^{4+}$ ions at ambient pressure forms a honeycomb lattice of spin-orbit-entangled singlets, which is a playground for frustrated excitonic magnetism. Under pressure, the singlet state does not develop the expected excitonic magnetism but experiences two successive transitions to other nonmagnetic phases, first to an intermediate phase with moderate distortion of honeycomb lattice, and eventually to a high-pressure phase with very short Ru-Ru dimer bonds. While the strong dimerization in the high-pressure phase originates from a molecular orbital formation as in the sister compound Li$_2$RuO$_3$, the intermediate phase represents a spin-orbit-coupled $J$-dimer state which is stabilized by the admixture of upper-lying $J_{\rm eff} = 1$-derived states. We argue that the $J$-dimer state is induced by a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect associated with the low-lying spin-orbital excited states and is unique to spin-orbit-entangled $d^4$ systems. The discovery of competing singlet phases demonstrates rich spin-orbital physics of $d^4$ honeycomb compounds and paves the way for realization of unconventional magnetism.

In quantum materials, degeneracies and frustrated interactions can have a profound impact on the emergence of long-range order, often driving strong fluctuations that suppress functionally relevant electronic or magnetic phases. Engineering the atomic structure in the bulk or at heterointerfaces has been an important research strategy to lift these degeneracies, but these equilibrium methods are limited by thermodynamic, elastic, and chemical constraints. Here, we show that all-optical, mode-selective manipulation of the crystal lattice can be used to enhance and stabilize high-temperature ferromagnetism in YTiO$_3$, a material that exhibits only partial orbital polarization, an unsaturated low-temperature magnetic moment, and a suppressed Curie temperature, $T_c$ = 27 K. The enhancement is largest when exciting a 9 THz oxygen rotation mode, for which complete magnetic saturation is achieved at low temperatures and transient ferromagnetism is realized up to $T_{neq} >$ 80 K, nearly three times the thermodynamic transition temperature. First-principles and model calculations of the nonlinear phonon-orbital-spin coupling reveal that these effects originate from dynamical changes to the orbital polarization and the makeup of the lowest quasi-degenerate Ti $t_{2g}$ levels. Notably, light-induced high temperature ferromagnetism in YTiO$_3$ is found to be metastable over many nanoseconds, underscoring the ability to dynamically engineer practically useful non-equilibrium functionalities.

We present a comprehensive study on the silver bismuthate Ag$_2$BiO$_3$, synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions, which has been the subject of recent theoretical work on topologically complex electronic states. We present X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showing two different bismuth states, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy results on the oxygen $K$-edge showing holes in the oxygen bands. These results support a bond disproportionated state with holes on the oxygen atoms for Ag$_2$BiO$_3$. We estimate a band gap of $\sim$1.25~eV for Ag$_2$BiO$_3$ from optical conductivity measurements, which matches the band gap in density functional calculations of the electronic band structure in the non-symmorphic space group $Pnn2$, which supports two inequivalent Bi sites. In our band structure calculations the disproportionated Ag$_2$BiO$_3$ is expected to host Weyl nodal chains, one of which is located $\sim$0.5~eV below the Fermi level. Furthermore, we highlight similarities between Ag$_2$BiO$_3$ and the well-known disproportionated bismuthate BaBiO$_3$, including breathing phonon modes with similar energy. In both compounds hybridization of Bi-$6s$ and O-$2p$ atomic orbitals is important in sha** the band structure, but in contrast to the Ba-$5p$ in BaBiO$_3$, the Ag-$4d$ bands in Ag$_2$BiO$_3$ extend up to the Fermi level.

Spin-lattice relaxation measurements in an applied field of 6.55 T reveal two equal amplitude components: one with metallic ($T$-linear) $1/T_{1}$, and a second with a more complex $T$-dependence. The metallic character of the slow relaxing component is only weakly affected by the LaNiO$_3$ thickness, while the fast component is much more sensitive, exhibiting the opposite temperature dependence (increasing towards low $T$) in the thinnest, most magnetic samples. The origin of this bipartite relaxation is discussed.

We find that all films 10 u.c. and thicker show the same universal temperature dependence of $ρ_s(T)$, which follows the critical behavior characteristic of single crystal YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ as $T$ approaches $T_c$. In 7 u.c. thick films, $ρ_s(T)$ declines steeply upon approaching $T_c$, as expected for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless vortex unbinding transition. Our analysis provides evidence for a sharply defined 4 u.c. non-SC interfacial layer, leaving a quasi-2D SC layer on top. We propose that the SC state in this interfacial layer is suppressed by competing (possibly charge) order.

Identifying an efficient pathway to change the order parameter via a subtle excitation of the coupled high-frequency mode is the ultimate goal of the field of ultrafast phase transitions. This is an especially interesting research direction in magnetism, where the coupling between spin and lattice excitations is required for magnetization reversal. Despite several attempts however, the switching between magnetic states via resonant pum** of phonon modes has not yet been demonstrated. Here we show how an ultrafast resonant excitation of the longitudinal optical phonon modes in magnetic garnet films switches magnetization into a peculiar quadrupolar magnetic domain pattern, unambiguously revealing the magneto-elastic mechanism of the switching. In contrast, the excitation of strongly absorbing transverse phonon modes results in thermal demagnetization effect only.

We present an experimental study on microwave illuminated high mobility MgZnO/ZnO based two-dimensional electron systems with different electron densities and, hence, varying Coulomb interaction strength. The photoresponse of the low-temperature dc resistance in perpendicular magnetic field is examined in low and high density samples over a broad range of illumination frequencies. In low density samples a response due to cyclotron resonance (CR) absorption dominates, while high density samples exhibit pronounced microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO). Microwave transmission experiments serve as a complementary means of detecting the CR over the entire range of electron densities and as a reference for the band mass unrenormalized by interactions. Both CR and MIRO-associated features in the resistance permit extraction of the effective mass of electrons but yield two distinct values. The conventional cyclotron mass representing center-of-mass dynamics exhibits no change with density and coincides with the band electron mass of bulk ZnO, while MIRO mass reveals a systematic increase with lowering electron density consistent with renormalization expected in interacting Fermi liquids.

With increasing YBCO sublayer thickness, the optical spectral weight is enhanced at photon energies of 1.5 - 3.5 eV. The spectral weight enhancement is proportional to the number of interfaces of each multilayer sample, indicating its association with the interfacial electronic structure. Based on calculations in the framework of a multilayer model, we find that the shape of the interface-induced spectral weight is consistent with transfer of hole-carriers from YBCO to LCMO. Our results imply that the holes that are transferred across the interfaces accumulate in the LCMO layers, rather than being pinned by interfacial defects or annihilated by electron donors such as oxygen vacancies. Optical spectroscopy can thus serve as a non-destructive probe of charge transfer across buried interfaces in metal-oxide heterostructures.

In high energy physics, the Higgs field couples to gauge bosons and fermions and gives mass to their elementary excitations. Experimentally, such couplings can be inferred from the decay product of the Higgs boson, i.e. the scalar (amplitude) excitation of the Higgs field. In superconductors, Cooper pairs bear a close analogy to the Higgs field. Interaction between the Cooper pairs and other degrees of freedom provides dissipation channel for the amplitude mode, which may reveal important information about the microscopic pairing mechanism. To this end, we investigate the Higgs (amplitude) mode of several cuprate thin films using phase-resolved terahertz third harmonic generation (THG). In addition to the heavily damped Higgs mode itself, we observe a universal jump in the phase of the driven Higgs oscillation as well as a non-vanishing THG above Tc. These findings indicate coupling of the Higgs mode to other collective modes and potentially a nonzero pairing amplitude above Tc.

The identified dipole-active phonon modes polarized along $a$ and $c$ axes are in good agreement with density functional theory calculations. With increasing temperature the $a$-axis phonon modes of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ become poorly discernible, as they are superimposed on the electronic background which gradually fills the energy gap near the monoclinic-to-orthorhombic phase transition temperature $T_c$ = 326 K. In Ta$_2$NiS$_5$, which does not exhibit such a structural transition and remains orthorhombic down to low temperatures, the $a$-axis phonon modes are superimposed on a persistent broad electronic mode centered near 16 meV. We attribute this difference to strongly overlap** exciton-phonon complexes in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, as opposed to isolated instances of the same in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$, and find this to be in good agreement with an excitonic insulator state below $T_c$ in the former, as compared to the absence of one in the latter.

Using extensive temperature-dependent measurements of THz transmission we identify a previously undetected 2.5-meV collective mode in the optical conductivity of SmFeAs(O,F), which is strongly suppressed at Tc and experiences an anomalous T-linear softening and narrowing below T*=110K>>Tc. The suppression of the infrared absorption in the superconducting state reveals a large optical superconducting gap with a similar gap ratio 2D=kBTc=7 in both materials, indicating strong pairing.

The understanding of the interplay between different orders in a solid is a key challenge in highly correlated electronic systems. In real systems this is even more difficult since disorder can have a strong influence on the subtle balance between these orders and thus can obscure the interpretation of the observed physical properties. Here we present a study on delta-doped La2CuO4 superlattices. By means of molecular beam epitaxy whole LaO-layers were periodically replaced through SrO-layers providing a charge reservoir, yet reducing the level of disorder typically present in doped cuprates to an absolute minimum. The induced superconductivity and its interplay with the antiferromagnetic order is studied by means of low-energy muSR. We find a quasi-2D superconducting state which couples to the antiferromagnetic order in a non-trivial way. Below the superconducting transition temperature, the magnetic volume fraction increases strongly. The reason could be a charge redistribution of the free carriers due to the opening of the superconducting gap which is possible due to the close proximity and low disorder between the different ordered regions.

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have detected exciton doublets with pronounced Fano lineshapes in both the compounds. The exciton Fano resonances in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ display an order of magnitude higher intensity than those in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$. In conjunction with prior theoretical work by E. The formation of exciton-phonon complexes in Ta$_2$NiS$_5$ and Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ is confirmed by the pronounced temperature dependence of sharp interband transitions in the optical spectra, whose peak energies and widths scale with the thermal population of optical phonon modes. The description of the optically excited states in terms of strongly overlap** exciton complexes is in good agreement with the hypothesis of an EI ground state.

We report the complex dielectric function along and perpendicular to the IrO2 planes in the layered perovskite Sr2IrO4 determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the spectral range from 12 meV to 6 eV. Thin high quality single crystals were stacked to measure the c-axis optical conductivity. In the phonon response we identified 10 infrared-active modes polarized within the basal plane and only four modes polarized along the c-axis, in full agreement with first-principle lattice dynamics calculations. We also observed a strong optical anisotropy in the near-infrared spectra arising from direct transitions between Ir 5d t2g Jeff = 1/2 and Jeff = 3/2 bands, which transition probability is highly suppressed for light polarized along the c-axis. The spectra are analyzed and discussed in terms of relativistic LSDA+U band structure calculations.

Iron-based superconductors have been found to exhibit an intimate interplay of orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom, dramatically affecting their low-energy electronic properties, including superconductivity. Albeit the precise pairing mechanism remains unidentified, several candidate interactions have been suggested to mediate the superconducting pairing, both in the orbital and in the spin channel. Here, we employ optical spectroscopy (OS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), ab initio band-structure, and Eliashberg calculations to show that nearly optimally doped NaFe$_{0.978}$Co$_{0.022}$As exhibits some of the strongest orbitally selective electronic correlations in the family of iron pnictides. Unexpectedly, we find that the mass enhancement of itinerant charge carriers in the strongly correlated band is dramatically reduced near the $Γ$ point and attribute this effect to orbital mixing induced by pronounced spin-orbit coupling. Embracing the true band structure allows us to describe all low-energy electronic properties obtained in our experiments with remarkable consistency and demonstrate that superconductivity in this material is rather weak and mediated by spin fluctuations.

We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the optical conductivity and a pronounced two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering spectrum. A prolonged exposure at high temperature during the growth leads to higher defect concentration likely due to creation of oxygen vacancies. We further demonstrate a systematic intergrowth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ phases by varying the growth temperature. Our results thus emphasize that revealing the intrinsic magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and related materials requires a scrupulous control of the crystal growth process.

In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ we identify the optical spin-density--wave gap $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}\approx1250\ \textrm{cm}^{-1}$. The $2Δ_{\mathrm{SDW}}/(k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{N}})$ ratio, characterizing the strength of the electron-electron coupling in the spin-density--wave state, amounts to $\approx12$ in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, significantly larger than the corresponding values for the $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{BaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ compounds: 8.7 and 5.3, respectively. We further show that, similarly to the Ba-based compound, two characteristic SDW energy gaps can be identified in the infrared-conductivity spectra of both $\textrm{SrFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ and investigate their detailed temperature dependence in all three materials. This analysis reveals the existence of an anomaly in $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ at a temperature $T^*\approx80\ \textrm{K}$, well below the Néel temperature of this compound, which implies weak coupling between the two SDW subsystems. The coupling between the two subsystems evolves to intermediate in the Sr-based and strong in the Ba-based material. The temperature dependence of the infrared phonons reveals clear anomalies at the corresponding Néel temperatures of the investigated compounds. In $\textrm{CaFe}_2\textrm{As}_2$, the phonons exhibit signatures of SDW fluctuations above $T_N$ and some evidence for anomalies at $T^*$. (full abstract in PDF)

In this work, we report a detailed investigation of two antiferromagnetic semiconductors AMnAs (A = Li, LaO), which are isostructural to the well-known LiFeAs and LaOFeAs superconductors. Here we present a comparison between the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of LiMnAs, LaOMnAs and related materials. Interestingly, both LiMnAs and LaOMnAs show a variation in resistivity with more than five orders of magnitude, making them particularly suitable for use in future electronic devices. From neutron and X-ray diffraction measurements on LiMnAs we have observed a magnetic phase transition corresponding to the Neel temperature of 373.8 K, and a structural transition from the tetragonal to the cubic phase at 768 K. These experimental results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

The resonant Raman condition which enhances the scattering cross section of "two-magnon" excitations is found to change strongly with do**, and it corresponds to a rearrangement of inter-band optical transitions in the 1-3 eV range seen by ellipsometry. This unexpected change of the resonance condition allows us to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between Raman and x-ray detection of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting cuprates. Intriguingly, the strongest variation occurs across the do** level where the antinodal superconducting gap reaches its maximum.

Among numerous hypotheses, recently proposed to explain superconductivity in iron-based superconductors [1-9], many consider Fermi surface (FS) nesting [2, 4, 8, 10] and dimensionality [4, 9] as important contributors. Precise determination of the electronic spectrum and its modification by superconductivity, crucial for further theoretical advance, were hindered by a rich structure of the FS [11-17]. Here, using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with resolution of all three components of electron momentum and electronic states symmetry, we disentangle the electronic structure of hole-doped BaFe2As2, and show that nesting and dimensionality of FS sheets have no immediate relation to the superconducting pairing. Alternatively a clear correlation between the orbital character of the electronic states and their propensity to superconductivity is observed: the magnitude of the superconducting gap maximizes at 10.5 meV exclusively for iron 3dxz;yz orbitals, while for others drops to 3.5 meV. Presented results reveal similarities of electronic response to superconducting and magneto-structural transitions [18, 19], implying that relation between these two phases is more intimate than just competition for FS, and demonstrate importance of orbital physics in iron superconductors.

We studied phase separation in a single-crystalline antiferromagnetic superconductor Rb2Fe4Se5 (RFS) using a combination of scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and low-energy muon spin rotation (LE-μSR). We demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases segregate into nanometer-thick layers perpendicular to the iron-selenide planes, while the characteristic in-plane size of the metallic domains reaches 10 μm. By means of LE-μSR we further show that in a 40-nm thick surface layer the ordered antiferromagnetic moment is drastically reduced, while the volume fraction of the paramagnetic phase is significantly enhanced over its bulk value. Self-organization into a quasiregular heterostructure indicates an intimate connection between the modulated superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases.

The competition between collective quantum phases in materials with strongly correlated electrons depends sensitively on the dimensionality of the electron system, which is difficult to control by standard solid-state chemistry. We have fabricated superlattices of the paramagnetic metal LaNiO3 and the wide-gap insulator LaAlO3 with atomically precise layer sequences. Using optical ellipsometry and low-energy muon spin rotation, superlattices with LaNiO3 as thin as two unit cells are shown to undergo a sequence of collective metalinsulator and antiferromagnetic transitions as a function of decreasing temperature, whereas samples with thicker LaNiO3 layers remain metallic and paramagnetic at all temperatures. Metal-oxide superlattices thus allow control of the dimensionality and collective phase behavior of correlated-electron systems.

We report the results of a comprehensive spectroscopic ellipsometry study of NaCu2O2, a compound composed of chains of edge-sharing Cu2+O4 plaquettes and planes of Cu1+ ions in a O-Cu1+-O dumbbell configuration, in the spectral range 0.75-6.5 eV at temperatures 7 -300 K. The spectra of the dielectric function for light polarized parallel to the Cu1+ planes reveal a strong in-plane anisotropy of the interband excitations. Strong and sharp absorption bands peaked at 3.45 eV (3.7 eV) dominate the spectra for polarization along (perpendicular) to the Cu2+O2 chains. They are superimposed on flat and featureless plateaux above the absorption edges at 2.25 eV (2.5 eV). Based on density-functional calculations, the anomalous absorption peaks can be assigned to transitions between bands formed by Cu1+ 3dxz(dyz) and Cu2+ 3dxy orbitals, strongly hybridized with O pstates. The major contribution to the background response comes from transitions between Cu1+ 3dz2 and 4px(py) bands. This assignment accounts for the measured in-plane anisotropy. The dielectric response along the Cu2+O2 chains develops a weak two-peak structure centered at 2.1 and 2.65 eV upon cooling below 100 K, along with the appearance of spin correlations along the Cu2+O2 chains. These features bear a striking resemblance to those observed in the single-valent Cu2+O2 chain compound LiCuVO4, which were identified as an exciton doublet associated with transitions to the upper Hubbard band that emerges as a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction between electrons on neighboring Cu2+ sites along the chains. An analysis of the spectral weights of these features yields the parameters characterizing the on-site and long-range Coulomb interactions.

This compound simultaneously displays a superconducting and a semiconducting optical response. It reveals a direct band-gap of 0.45 eV determined by a set of spin-controlled interband transitions. Below 100 K we observe in the lowest THz spectral range a clear metallic response characterized by the negative dielectric permittivity ε1 and bare (unscreened) ωpl=100 meV. At the superconducting transition this metallic response exhibits a signature of a superconducting gap below 8 meV. Our findings suggest a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in this compound as two separate phases.

Here we present a direct experimental observation of fusion of Bogoliubov dispersion branches originating from the antipodal Fermi crossings by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Uncommon discernibility and brightness of bogoliubons' fusion stems from comparability of the superconducting gap magnitude and the distance from the Fermi level to the band's top, and strong electron scattering on a mode with similar energy. Such similarity of the electronic and pairing energy scales seems to be a persistent associate of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) rather than just a mere coincidence.

The occupation of d-orbitals controls the magnitude and anisotropy of the inter-atomic electron transfer in transition metal oxides and hence exerts a key influence on their chemical bonding and physical properties. Atomic-scale modulations of the orbital occupation at surfaces and interfaces are believed to be responsible for massive variations of the magnetic and transport properties, but could thus far not be probed in a quantitative manner. Here we show that it is possible to derive quantitative, spatially resolved orbital polarization profiles from soft x-ray reflectivity data, without resorting to model calculations. We demonstrate that the method is sensitive enough to resolve differences of 3 % in the occupation of Ni e_g orbitals in adjacent atomic layers of a LaNiO3-LaAlO3 superlattice, in good agreement with ab-initio electronic-structure calculations. The possibility to quantitatively correlate theory and experiment on the atomic scale opens up many new perspectives for orbital physics in d-electron materials.

Superconductors are classified by their pairing mechanism and the coupling strength, measured as the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature, Tc. We present an extensive comparison of the gap ratios among many single- and multiband superconductors from simple metals to high-Tc cuprates and iron pnictides. Contrary to the recently suggested universality of this ratio in Fe-based superconductors, we find that the coupling in pnictides ranges from weak, near the BCS limit, to strong, as in cuprates, bridging the gap between these two extremes. Moreover, for Fe- and Cu-based materials, our analysis reveals a universal correlation between the gap ratio and Tc, which is not found in conventional superconductors and therefore supports a common unconventional pairing mechanism in both families. An important consequence of this result for ferropnictides is that the separation in energy between the excitonic spin-resonance mode and the particle-hole continuum, which determines the resonance dam**, no longer appears independent of Tc.

The experimental data demonstrate strong deviations from the Bloch-Grüneisen behavior, namely the tendency to saturation of the resistivity at high temperatures. The observed behavior of the resistivity is explained within the two band scenario when the first band is strongly coupled and relatively clean, while the second band is weakly coupled and is characterized by much stronger impurity scattering.

One of the central tenets of conventional theories of superconductivity, including most models proposed for the recently discovered iron-pnictide superconductors, is the notion that only electronic excitations with energies comparable to the superconducting energy gap are affected by the transition. Here we report the results of a comprehensive spectroscopic ellipsometry study of a high-quality crystal of superconducting $\textrm{Ba}_{0.68}\textrm{K}_{0.32}\textrm{Fe}_2\textrm{As}_2$ that challenges this notion. We observe a superconductivity-induced suppression of an absorption band at an energy of $2.5\ \textrm{eV}$, two orders of magnitude above the superconducting gap energy $2Δ\sim 20\ \textrm{meV}$. Based on density-functional calculations, this band can be assigned to transitions from As-p to Fe-d orbitals crossing the Fermi surface. We identify a related effect at the spin-density-wave transition in parent compounds of the 122 family. This suggests that As-p states deep below the Fermi level contribute to the formation of the superconducting and spin-density-wave states in the iron arsenides.

For photon polarization along the chains, the data reveal a weak but well-resolved two-peak structure centered at 2.15 and 2.95 eV whose spectral weight is strongly enhanced upon cooling near the magnetic ordering temperature. We identify these features as an exciton doublet in the Mott-Hubbard gap that emerges as a consequence of the Coulomb interaction between electrons on nearest and next-nearest neighbor sites along the chains. Our results and methodology can be used to address the role of the long-range Coulomb repulsion for compounds with doped copper-oxide chains and planes.

The transport and superconducting properties of Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2 single crystals with T_c = 31 K were studied. Both in-plane and out-of plane resistivity was measured by modified Montgomery method. The in-plane resistivity for all studied samples, obtained in the course of the same synthesis, is almost the same, unlike to the out-of plane resistivity, which differ considerably. We have found that the resistivity anisotropy γ=ρ_c /ρ_{ab} is almost temperature independent and lies in the range 10-30 for different samples. This, probably, indicates on the extrinsic nature of high out-of-plane resistivity, which may appear due to the presence of the flat defects along Fe-As layers in the samples. This statement is supported by comparatively small effective mass anisotropy, obtained from the upper critical field measurements, and from the observation of the so-called "Friedel transition", which indicates on the existence of some disorder in the samples in c-direction.

A combination of spectroscopic probes was used to develop a detailed experimental description of the transport and magnetic properties of superlattices composed of the paramagnetic metal CaRuO$_3$ and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO$_3$. The charge carrier density and Ru valence state in the superlattices are not significantly different from those of bulk CaRuO$_3$. The small charge transfer across the interface implied by these observations confirms predictions derived from density functional calculations. However, a ferromagnetic polarization due to canted Mn spins penetrates 3-4 unit cells into CaMnO$_3$, far exceeding the corresponding predictions. The discrepancy may indicate the formation of magnetic polarons at the interface.

A comprehensive ellipsometric study was performed on Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si single crystals in the spectral range from 0.01 eV to 6.2 eV. Direct and indirect band gaps of 73 meV and 10 meV, respectively, were observed in FeSi at 7 K. One of four infrared-active phonons that is energetically close to the direct absorption edge is coupled both to the electrons and to the low-energy phonon. This is evident from asymmetry in the phonon line shape and a reduction of its frequency when the absorption edge shifts across the phonon energy due to the temperature dependence of the direct band gap. As the temperature increases, the indirect gap changes sign, which manifests as a transition from a semiconductor to a semimetal. The corresponding gain of the spectral weight at low energies was recovered within an energy range of several eV. The present findings strongly support the model indicating that Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si can be well described in an itinerant picture, taking into account self-energy corrections.

The thermodynamic properties of the ferromagnetic perovskite YTiO$_3$ are investigated by thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetization measurements. The low-temperature spin-wave contribution to the specific heat, as well as an Arrott plot of the magnetization in the vicinity of the Curie temperature $T_C\simeq27$ K, are consistent with a three-dimensional Heisenberg model of ferromagnetism. However, a magnetic contribution to the thermal expansion persists well above $T_C$, which contrasts with typical three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnets, as shown by a comparison with the corresponding model system EuS. The pressure dependences of $T_C$ and of the spontaneous moment $M_s$ are extracted using thermodynamic relationships. They indicate that ferromagnetism is strengthened by uniaxial pressures $\mathbf{p}\parallel \mathbf{a}$ and is weakened by uniaxial pressures $\mathbf{p}\parallel \mathbf{b},\mathbf{c}$ and hydrostatic pressure. Our results show that the distortion along the $a$- and $b$-axes is further increased by the magnetic transition, confirming that ferromagnetism is favored by a large GdFeO$_3$-type distortion. The c-axis results however do not fit into this simple picture, which may be explained by an additional magnetoelastic effect, possibly related to a Jahn-Teller distortion.

The anisotropic complex dielectric response was accurately extracted from spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements at phonon frequencies for the three principal crystallographic directions of an orthorhombic (Pbnm) YTiO_3 single crystal. We identify all twenty five infrared-active phonon modes allowed by symmetry, 7B_1u, 9B_2u, and 9B_3u, polarized along the c-, b-, and a-axis, respectively. From a classical dispersion analysis of the complex dielectric functions \tildeε(ω) and their inverses -1/\tildeε(ω) we define the resonant frequencies, widths, and oscillator strengths of the transverse (TO) and longitudinal (LO) phonon modes. We calculate eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of B_1u, B_2u, and B_3u normal modes and suggest assignments of the TO phonon modes observed in our ellipsometry spectra by comparing their frequencies and oscillator strengths with those resulting from the present lattice-dynamics study. Based on these assignments, we estimate dynamical effective charges of the atoms in the YTiO_3 lattice. We find that, in general, the dynamical effective charges in YTiO_3 lattice are typical for a family of perovskite oxides. By contrast to a ferroelectric BaTiO_3, the dynamical effective charge of oxygen related to a displacement along the c-axis does not show the anomalously large value. At the same time, the dynamical effective charges of Y and ab-plane oxygen exhibit anisotropy, indicating strong hybridization along the a-axis.

Here we present a combined study of the slightly underdoped novel pnictide superconductor Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) by means of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron scattering, muon spin rotation (muSR), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Commensurate static magnetic order sets in below Tm ~ 70 K as inferred from the emergence of the magnetic (1 0 -3) reflection in the neutron scattering data and from the observation of damped oscillations in the zero-field-muSR asymmetry. Transverse-field muSR below Tc shows a coexistence of magnetically ordered and non-magnetic states, which is also confirmed by MFM imaging. We explain such coexistence by electronic phase separation into antiferromagnetic and superconducting/normal state regions on a lateral scale of several tens of nanometers. Our findings indicate that such mesoscopic phase separation can be considered an intrinsic property of some iron pnictide superconductors.

The precise momentum dependence of the superconducting gap in the iron-arsenide superconductor with Tc = 32K (BKFA) was determined from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) via fitting the distribution of the quasiparticle density to a model. The model incorporates finite lifetime and experimental resolution effects, as well as accounts for peculiarities of BKFA electronic structure. We have found that the value of the superconducting gap is practically the same for the inner Gamma-barrel, X-pocket, and "blade"-pocket, and equals 9 meV, while the gap on the outer Gamma-barrel is estimated to be less than 4 meV, resulting in 2Delta/kT_c=6.8 for the large gap, and 2Delta/kT_c<3 for the small gap. A large (77 \pm 3%) non-superconducting component in the photoemission signal is observed below T_c. Details of gap extraction from ARPES data are discussed in Appendix.

The distribution of valence electrons in metals usually follows the symmetry of an ionic lattice. Modulations of this distribution often occur when those electrons are not stable with respect to a new electronic order, such as spin or charge density waves. Electron density waves have been observed in many families of superconductors[1-3], and are often considered to be essential for superconductivity to exist[4]. Recent measurements[5-9] seem to show that the properties of the iron pnictides[10, 11] are in good agreement with band structure calculations that do not include additional ordering, implying no relation between density waves and superconductivity in those materials[12-15]. Here we report that the electronic structure of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is in sharp disagreement with those band structure calculations[12-15], instead revealing a reconstruction characterized by a (pi,pi) wave vector. This electronic order coexists with superconductivity and persists up to room temperature.

The spectral weight transfer in the undoped LaFeAsO associated with opening of the pseudogap at about 0.65 eV is restricted at energies below 2 eV. The spectra of superconducting LaFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ reveal a significant transfer of the spectral weight to a broad optical band above 4 eV with increasing temperature. Our data may imply that the electronic states near the Fermi surface are strongly renormalized due to electron-phonon and/or electron-electron interactions.

We have studied the temperature dependence of spectroscopic ellipsometry spectra of an electrically insulating, nearly stoichiometric YTiO_3 single crystal with ferromagnetic Curie temperature T_C = 30 K. The optical response exhibits a weak but noticeable anisotropy. Using a classical dispersion analysis, we identify three low-energy optical bands at 2.0, 2.9, and 3.7 eV. Although the optical conductivity spectra are only weakly temperature dependent below 300 K, we are able to distinguish high- and low-temperature regimes with a distinct crossover point around 100 K. The low-temperature regime in the optical response coincides with the temperature range in which significant deviations from Curie-Weiss mean field behavior are observed in the magnetization. Using an analysis based on a simple superexchange model, the spectral weight rearrangement can be attributed to intersite d_i^1d_j^1 \longrightarrow d_i^2d_j^0 optical transitions. In particular, Kramers-Kronig consistent changes in optical spectra around 2.9 eV can be associated with the high-spin-state (^3T_1) optical transition. This indicates that other mechanisms, such as weakly dipole-allowed p-d transitions and/or exciton-polaron excitations, can contribute significantly to the optical band at 2 eV. The recorded optical spectral weight gain of 2.9 eV optical band is significantly suppressed and anisotropic, which we associate with complex spin-orbit-lattice phenomena near ferromagnetic ordering temperature in YTiO_3.
