A supposedly nonmagnetic 5d$^1$ double perosvkite oxide is investigated by a combination of spectroscopic and theoretical methods, namely resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism, and multiplet ligand field calculations. We found that the large spin-orbit coupling admixes the 5d $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ orbitals, covalency raises the 5d population well above the nominal value, and the local symmetry is lower than $O_h$. The obtained electronic interactions account for the finite magnetic moment of Os in this compound and, in general, of 5d$^1$ ions. Our results provide direct evidence of elusive Jahn-Teller distortions, hinting at a strong electron-lattice coupling.

We combine time resolved pump-probe Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiments supported by theoretical analysis to determine the relaxation dynamics of delocalized electrons in half-metallic ferromagnetic manganite $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$. We observe that the half-metallic character of $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ determines the timescale of both the electronic phase transition and the quenching of magnetization, revealing a quantum isolation of the spin system in double exchange ferromagnets extending up to hundreds of picoseconds. We demonstrate the use of time-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-HAXPES) as a unique tool to single out the evolution of strongly correlated electronic states across a second-order phase transition in a complex material.

The longstanding problem of interpretation of satellite structures in core level photoemission spectra of metallic systems with a low density of conduction electrons is addressed using the specific example of Sb-doped SnO$_2$. Comparison of {\it ab initio} many-body calculations with experimental hard X-ray photoemission spectra of the Sn 4$d$ states shows that strong satellites are produced by coupling of the Sn core hole to the plasma oscillations of the free electrons introduced by do**. Within the same theoretical framework, spectral changes of the valence band spectra are also related to dynamical screening effects. These results demonstrate that, for the interpretation of electron correlation features in the core level photoelectron spectra of such narrow-band materials, going beyond the homogeneous electron gas electron-plasmon coupling model is essential.

The influence of magnetic dopants on the electronic and chemical environments in topological insulators (TIs) is a key factor when considering possible spintronic applications based on topological surface state properties. Here we provide spectroscopic evidence for the presence of distinct chemical and electronic behavior for surface and bulk magnetic do** of Bi2Te3. The inclusion of Mn in the bulk of Bi2Te3 induces a genuine dilute ferromagnetic state, with reduction of the bulk band gap as the Mn content is increased. Deposition of Fe on the Bi2Te3 surface, on the other hand, favors the formation of iron telluride already at coverages as low as 0.07 monolayer, as a consequence of the reactivity of the Te-rich surface. Our results identify the factors that need to be controlled in the realization of magnetic nanosystems and interfaces based on TIs.

We report on the optimisation of the growth conditions of manganite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films prepared by Channel Spark Ablation (CSA). CSA belongs to pulsed electron deposition methods and its energetic and deposition parameters are quite similar to those of pulsed laser deposition. The method has been already proven to provide manganite films with good magnetic properties, but the films were generally relatively rough (a few nm coarseness). Here we show that increasing the oxygen deposition pressure with respect to previously used regimes, reduces the surface roughness down to unit cell size while maintaining a robust magnetism. We analyse in detail the effect of other deposition parameters, like accelerating voltage, discharging energy, and temperature and provide on this basis a set of optimal conditions for the growth of atomically flat films. The thicknesses for which atomically flat surface was achieved is as high as about 10-20 nm, corresponding to films with room temperature magnetism. We believe such magnetic layers represent appealing and suitable electrodes for various spintronic devices.

Magnetically doped TIs are ferromagnetic up to 13 K,3 well below any practical operating condition. Here we demonstrate that the long range ferromagnetism at ambient temperature can be induced in Bi2-xMnxTe3 by the magnetic proximity effect through deposited Fe overlayer. This result opens a new path to interface-controlled ferromagnetism in TI-based spintronic devices.

The electronic anisotropy in MgB2, is still a not completely clear topic; high quality c-oriented films are suitable systems to investigate this property. In this work we present our results on MgB2 superconducting thin films grown on MgO and sapphire substrates. The films are deposited in high vacuum, at room temperature, by Laser Ablation, starting from two different targets: pure Boron and stoichiometric MgB2. In both cases, to obtain and crystallize the superconducting phase, an ex-situ annealing in magnesium vapor is needed. The films were characterized by Synchrotron radiation diffraction measurements; the films turned out to be strongly c-oriented, with the c-axis perpendicular to the film surface and an influence of the substrate on crystallographic parameters is observed. Resisivity measurements with the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel directions to the film surface evidenced an anisotropic upper critical field behavior. The Hc2 ratios (h) resulted in the range 1.2-1.8; this difference will be discussed also in comparison with the literature data.

MgB2 thin films were deposited using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and ex-situ annealing in Mg atmosphere. The films presented critical temperatures up to 36K and turned out to be preferentially c-oriented both on Al2O3 (r-cut) and MgO(100) substrates. Synchrotron analyses gave also some indications of in plane texturing. The films exhibit very fine grain size (1200angstromin the basal plane and 100angstrom along c-axis) but the general resistivity behavior and the remarkable extension of the irreversible region confirm that the grains boundaries are not barriers for supercurrents. Upper critical field measurements with the magnetic field perpendicular and parallel with respect to the film surface evidenced a field anisotropy ratio of 1.8. The Hc2 values are considerably higher with respect to the bulk ones, namely when the field lies in the basal plane, and the field-temperature phase diagram for the two magnetic field orientations suggest the possibility of strongly enhancing the pinning region by means of texturing.
