Abstract:
In this work, we demonstrate that cutting diamond crystals with a laser (532~nm wavelength, 0.5~mJ energy, 200~ns pulse duration at 15~kHz) produces a $\lesssim 20~$nm thick surface layer with magnetic order at room temperature. We have measured the magnetic moment of five natural and six CVD diamond crystals of different size, nitrogen content and surface orientations with a SQUID magnetometer. A…

A robust ferromagnetic response at 300~K is observed only for crystals that were cut with the laser along the (100) surface orientation. The magnetic signals are much weaker for the (110) and negligible for the (111) orientations. We attribute the magnetic order to the disordered graphite layer produced by the laser at the diamond surface. The ferromagnetic signal vanished after chemical etching or after moderate temperature annealing. The obtained results indicate that laser treatment of diamond may pave the way to create ferromagnetic spots at its surface.

Abstract:
I.M. Gelfand and V.A. Ponomarev (1969) proved that the problem of classifying pairs (A,B) of commuting nilpotent operators on a vector space contains the problem of classifying an arbitrary t-tuple of linear operators. Moreover, it contains the problem of classifying representations of an arbitrary quiver, and so it is considered as hopeless. We give a simple normal form of the matrices of (A,B) i…

Moreover, it contains the problem of classifying representations of an arbitrary quiver, and so it is considered as hopeless. We give a simple normal form of the matrices of (A,B) if the intersection of kernels of A and B is one-dimensional. We prove that this form is canonical if the Jordan matrix of A is a direct sum of Jordan blocks of the same size and the field is of zero characteristic.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has progressed with varying degrees of intensity in individual countries, suggesting it is important to analyse factors that vary between them. We study measures of `population-weighted density', which capture density as perceived by a randomly chosen individual. These measures of population density can significantly explain variation in the initial rate of spread of COVID-19 between countries within Europe. However, such measures do not explain differences on a global scale, particularly when considering countries in East Asia, or looking later into the epidemics. Therefore, to control for country-level differences in response to COVID-19 we consider the cross-cultural measure of individualism proposed by Hofstede. This score can significantly explain variation in the size of epidemics across Europe, North America, and East Asia. Using both our measure of population-weighted density and the Hofstede score we can significantly explain half the variation in the current size of epidemics across Europe and North America. By controlling for country-level responses to the virus and population density, our analysis of the global incidence of COVID-19 can help focus attention on epidemic control measures that are effective for individual countries.

Abstract:
Let $\mathbb F$ be a field $\mathbb F $ of characteristic zero. Let $W_{n}(\mathbb F)$ be the Lie algebra of all $\mathbb F$-derivations with the Lie bracket $[D_1, D_2]:=D_1D_2-D_2D_1$ on the polynomial ring $\mathbb F [x_1, \ldots , x_n]$. The problem of classifying finite dimensional subalgebras of $W_{n}(\mathbb F)$ was solved if $ n\leq 2$ and $\mathbb F=\mathbb C$ or $\mathbb F=\mathbb R.$ W…

The problem of classifying finite dimensional subalgebras of $W_{n}(\mathbb F)$ was solved if $ n\leq 2$ and $\mathbb F=\mathbb C$ or $\mathbb F=\mathbb R.$ We prove that this problem is wild if $n\geq 4$, which means that it contains the classical unsolved problem of classifying matrix pairs up to similarity. The structure of finite dimensional subalgebras of $W_{n}(\mathbb F)$ is interesting since each derivation in case $\mathbb F=\mathbb R$ can be considered as a vector field with polynomial coefficients on the manifold $\mathbb R^{n}.$

For a given poset, we consider its representations by systems of subspaces of a unitary space ordered by inclusion. We classify such systems for all posets for which an explicit classification is possible.

Soviet Math. 3 (1975) 636-654] from the classification of finitely generated modules over a dyad of two local Dedekind rings. We give canonical matrices of (A,B) over any field in an explicit form and our proof is constructive: the matrices of (A,B) are sequentially reduced to their canonical form by similarity transformations (A,B)--> S^{-1}AS, S^{-1}BS).

Turbulent flow fields can be expanded into a series in a set of basic functions. The terms of such series are often called modes. A master- (or determining) mode set is a subset of these modes, the time history of which uniquely determines the time history of the entire turbulent flow provided that this flow is developed. In the present work the existence of the master-mode-set is demonstrated numerically for turbulent channel flow. The minimal size of a master-mode set and the rate of the process of the recovery of the entire flow from the master-mode set history are estimated. The velocity field corresponding to the minimal master-mode set is found to be a good approximation for mean velocity in the entire flow field. Mean characteristics involving velocity derivatives deviate in a very close vicinity to the wall, while master-mode two-point correlations exhibit unrealistic oscillations. This can be improved by using a larger than minimal master-mode set. The near-wall streaks are found to be contained in the velocity field corresponding to the minimal master-mode set, and the same is true at least for the large-scale part of the longitudinal vorticity structure. A database containing the time history of a master-mode set is demonstrated to be an efficient tool for investigating rare events in turbulent flows. In particular, a travelling-wave-like object was identified on the basis of the analysis of the database. Two master-mode-set databases of the time history of a turbulent channel flow are made available online at http://www.dnsdata.afm.ses.soton.ac.uk/. The services provided include the facility for the code uploaded by a user to be run on the server with an access to the data.
