The evolution of synchrotrons towards higher brilliance beams has increased the possible sample-to-detector propagation distances for which the source confusion circle does not lead to geometrical blurring. This makes it possible to push near-field propagation driven phase contrast enhancement to the limit, revealing low contrast features which would otherwise remain hidden under an excessive noise. Until today this possibility was hindered, in many objects of scientific interest, by the simultaneous presence of strong phase gradient regions and low contrast features. The strong gradients, when enhanced with the now possible long propagation distances, induce such strong phase effects that the linearisation assumptions of current state-of-the-art single-distance phase retrieval filters are broken, and the resulting image quality is jeopardized. Here, we introduce a new iterative phase-retrieval algorithm and compare it with the Paganin phase-retrieval algorithm, in both the monochromatic and polychromatic cases, obtaining superior image quality. In the polychromatic case the comparison was done with an extrapolated Paganin algorithm obtained by reintroducing, into our phase retrieval algorithm, the linearization approximations underlying the Paganin forward model. Our work provides an innovative algorithm which efficiently performs the phase retrieval task over the entire near-field range, producing images of exceptional quality for mixed attenuation objects.

Abstract:
The three-dimensional structures of the primary Al3Sc particles in an Al-2Sc master alloy were studied by synchrotron X-ray microtomography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The Al3Sc phases were found to be a single cube and a cluster of cubes. The three-dimensional structures of the primary Al3Sc particles in an Al-2Sc master alloy were studied by synchrotron X-ray microtomography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The Al3Sc phases were found to be a single cube and a cluster of cubes. The surface area, equivalent diameter of the Al3Sc cubes increased with the increasing of cube volume, but the specific surface area decreases. The primary Al3Sc cubes and Al-matrix have the same crystal orientation, indicating that the Al3Sc phases are the heterogeneous nucleation sites for Al. The experimental results show that α-Al2O3 are the possible nucleation sites for the Al3Sc cubes.

Using in-situ synchrotron tomography, we investigate the coarsening dynamics of barium borosilicate melts during phase separation. The 3-D geometry of the two interconnected phases is determined thanks to image processing. We observe a linear growth of the size of domains with time, at odds with the sublinear diffusive growth usually observed in phase-separating glasses or alloys. Such linear coarsening is attributed to viscous flow inside the bicontinuous phases, and quantitative measurements show that the growth rate is well explained by the ratio of surface tension over viscosity. The geometry of the domains is shown to be statistically similar at different times, provided that the microstructure is rescaled by the average domain size. Complementary experiments on melts with a droplet morphology demonstrate that viscous flow prevails over diffusion in the large range of domain sizes measured in our experiments (1 - 80 microns).

X-Ray microtomography was used to follow the coarsening of the structure of a ternary silicate glass experiencing phase separation in the liquid state. The volumes, surfaces, mean and Gaussian curvatures of the domains of minority phase were measured after reconstruction of the 3D images and segmentation. A linear growth law of the characteristic length scale $\ell \sim t$ was observed. A detailed morphological study was performed. While dynamical scaling holds for most of the geometrical observables under study, a progressive departure from scaling invariance of the distributions of local curvatures was evidenced. The latter results from a gradual fragmentation of the structure in the less viscous phase that also leads to a power-law size distribution of isolated domains.
