The structural transitions in this family arise from $MeX_6$ octahedron rotations that generate a rich variety of symmetries depending on the rotation axis and stacking schemes. In order to search for local distortions in the high-symmetry phase we perform refinements of anharmonic atomic displacement parameters with comprehensive data sets. Even at temperatures close to the onset of structural distortions, these refinements only yield a small improvement indicating only small anharmonic effects. The phase transitions in these antifluorites are essentially of displacive character. However, some harmonic displacement parameters are very large reflecting soft phonon modes with the softening covering large parts of the Brillouin zone. The occurrence of the rotational transitions in the antifluorite-type family can be remarkably well analyzed in terms of a tolerance factor of ionic radii.

The half-filled $t_{2g}$ shell of the $t_{2g}^3$ configuration usually, in LS coupling, hosts a S = 3/2 ground state with quenched orbital moment. This state is not Jahn-Teller active. Sufficiently large spin-orbit coupling $ζ$ has been predicted to change this picture by mixing in orbital moment, giving rise to a sizable Jahn-Teller distortion. In $5d^3$ K$_2$ReCl$_6$ we study the electronic excitations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. We observe on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and corresponding overtones with two intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations on adjacent sites, the Mott gap at 2.7 eV, $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations above 3 eV, and charge-transfer excitations at still higher energy. The intra-$t_{2g}$ excitation energies are a sensitive measure of $ζ$ and Hund's coupling $J_H$. The sizable value of $ζ\approx$ 0.29 eV places K$_2$ReCl$_6$ into the intermediate coupling regime, but $ζ/J_H \approx 0.6$ is not sufficiently large to drive a pronounced Jahn-Teller effect. We discuss the ground state wavefunction in a Kanamori picture and find that the S = 3/2 multiplet still carries about 97 % of the weight. However, the finite admixture of orbital moment allows for subtle effects. We discuss small temperature-induced changes of the optical data and find evidence for a lowering of the ground state by about 3 meV below the structural phase transitions.

The molecular compound (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)] is a type-II multiferroic material, in which incommensurate cycloidal order directly induces ferroelectric polarization. The multiferroic domain kinetics in (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)] were studied by time-resolved neutron diffraction experiments utilizing neutron polarization analysis. The temperature and electric-field dependent multiferroic relaxation obeys the simple combined Arrhenius-Merz law, which was reported to describe domain kinetics in the prototype multiferroics TbMnO3 and NaFeGe2O6. However, the characteristic time scale of the multiferroic relaxation is considerably larger than those in TbMnO3 or NaFeGe2O6. Temperature-dependent diffraction on (NH4)2[FeCl5(H2O)] reveals the emergence of higher-order and commensurate magnetic contributions upon cooling in the multiferroic phase in zero field. The good agreement with studies of higher-harmonic contributions in the deuterated material indicates that the isotopes only posses a minor impact on the magnetic ordering. But in contrast to similar observations in multiferroic MnWO4, this anharmonic modification of magnetic ordering does not depin multiferroic domain walls or alter the temperature dependence of the multiferroic relaxation.

We demonstrate that the cubic antifluorite-type halides K$_2$OsCl$_6$, K$_2$OsBr$_6$, and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ are excellent realizations of non-magnetic J=0 compounds. The magnetic susceptibility shows the corresponding Van-Vleck type behavior and no sign of defects. We investigate the electronic excitations with two complementary techniques, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. This powerful combination allows us to thoroughly study, e.g., on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations and $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations as well as inter-site excitations across the Mott gap and an exciton below the gap. In this way, we determine the electronic parameters with high accuracy, altogether yielding a comprehensive picture. In K$_2$OsCl$_6$, we find the spin-orbit coupling constant $ζ$=0.34 eV, Hund's coupling $J_H$=0.43 eV, the onset of excitations across the Mott gap at $Δ$=2.2 eV, the cubic crystal-field splitting 10Dq=3.3 eV, and the charge-transfer energy $Δ_{CT}$=4.6 eV. With $J_H/ζ$=1.3, K$_2$OsCl$_6$ is in the intermediate-coupling regime. In a $t_{2g}$-only Kanamori picture, the above values correspond to $ζ^{eff}$=0.41 eV and $J_H^{eff}$=0.28 eV, which is very close to results reported for related $5d^4$ iridates. In the tetragonal phase at 5 K, the non-cubic crystal field causes a peak splitting of the J=1 state as small as 4 meV. Compared to K$_2$OsCl$_6$, the bromides K$_2$OsBr$_6$ and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ show about 12-14 % smaller values of 10Dq and $Δ_{CT}$, while the spin-orbit-entangled intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and hence $ζ$ and $J_H$ are reduced by less than 4 %. Furthermore, the Mott gap in K$_2$OsBr$_6$ is reduced to about 1.8 eV.

We present a study of high-quality BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ single crystals via magnetization, heat-capacity, thermal-expansion and magnetostriction measurements. Sharp anomalies in the thermodynamic properties at $T_N=3.4\,$K reveal a long-range antiferromagnetic order in these single-crystalline samples, which is absent in polycrystalline BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibilities for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields are strongly anisotropic and reveal a pronounced easy-plane anisotropy. A Curie-Weiss analysis implies strong orbital magnetism, as it is known from the sister compound BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ that is discussed as a potential Kitaev spin-liquid material. When applying in-plane magnetic fields at low temperature, BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ is driven to another ordered phase at a critical field $H_{C1}\approx 0.11\,$T and then undergoes a further field-induced transition to a highly polarized paramagnetic phase at $H_{C2}\approx 0.3\,$T, which is again similar to the case of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$. In addition, our lowest-temperature data reveal that the field-induced transitions in BaCo$_2$(PO$_4$)$_2$ become dominated by thermally assisted domain-wall motion.

Using polarization selective spontaneous Raman scattering, we have investigated the 5$d$ transition metal compound K$_2$ReCl$_6$ which displays a series of structural phase transitions. We observe a violation of the Raman selection rules in the cubic high temperature phase as well as a low-energy scattering continuum persistent throughout the investigated temperature range from 300 down to 5 K. The continuum couples to one of the phonon modes at temperatures above the lowest structural phase transition at 76 K. We propose a common origin of these observations caused by local fluctuations in the orientation of the ReCl$_6$ octahedra which locally break the long-range cubic symmetry. Consistent results from the related non-magnetic compound K$_2$SnCl$_6$ support this interpretation.

The magnetic and structural phase transitions occurring in K$_2$ReCl$_6$ were studied by macroscopic and microscopic techniques. Structural phase transitions associated with rotations of the ReCl$_6$ octahedra lower the symmetry from cubic to monoclinic, form ferroelastic domains, and are visible in susceptibility, specific heat and thermal expansion measurements. In the antiferromagnetically ordered state slightly below $T_{\rm N}$=12\,K these domains can be rearranged by a magnetic field inducing a relative elongation of the polydomain crystal parallel to the field of 0.6\%. At zero field the magnetic structure in K$_2$ReCl$_6$ does not exhibit a weak ferromagnetic component, but at large magnetic field a distinct magnetic structure with a finite weak ferromagnetic component is stabilized. High magnetic fields rearrange the domains in the crystal to align the weak ferromagnetic moment parallel to the field. The altered domain structure with the crystal elongation is abruptly suppressed at lower temperature but persists upon heating to well above $T_{\rm N}$. However, heating above the lowest structural phase transition and successive cooling restore the initial shape.

The recently discovered material Cs$_3$Fe$_2$Br$_9$ contains Fe$_2$Br$_9$ bi-octahedra forming triangular layers with hexagonal stacking along the $c$ axis. In contrast to isostructural Cr-based compounds, the zero-field ground state is not a nonmagnetic $S=0$ singlet-dimer state. Instead, the Fe$_2$Br$_9$ bi-octahedra host semiclassical $S=5/2$ Fe$^{3+}$ spins with a pronounced easy-axis anisotropy along $c$ and interestingly, the intra-dimer spins are ordered ferromagnetically. The high degree of magnetic frustration due to (various) competing intra- and inter-dimer couplings leads to a surprisingly rich magnetic phase diagram. Already the zero-field ground state is reached via an intermediate phase, and the high-field magnetization and thermal expansion data for $H\parallel c$ identify ten different ordered phases. Among them are phases with constant magnetization of 1/3, respectively 1/2 of the saturation value, and several transitions are strongly hysteretic with pronounced length changes reflecting strong magnetoelastic coupling.

The magnetic structure and the multiferroic relaxation dynamics of NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$ were studied by neutron scattering on single crystals partially utilizing polarization analysis. In addition to the previously reported transitions, the incommensurate spiral ordering of Fe$^{3+}$ moments in the $ac$ plane develops an additional component along the crystallographic $b$ direction below $T\approx 5\text{ K}$, which coincides with a lock-in of the incommensurate modulation. The quasistatic control of the spin-spiral handedness, respectively of the vector chirality, by external electric fields proves the invertibility of multiferroic domains down to the lowest temperature. Time-resolved measurements of the multiferroic domain inversion in NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$ reveal a simple temperature and electric-field dependence of the multiferroic relaxation that is well described by a combined Arrhenius-Merz relation, as it has been observed for TbMnO$_3$. The crystal and magnetic structure of multiferroic LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ were investigated by temperature and magnetic-field dependent specific heat, susceptibility and neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals. Considering only the two nearest-neighbour magnetic interactions, the system forms a $J_1$, $J_2$ magnetic chain but more extended interactions are sizeable. Two different magnetic phases exhibiting long-range incommensurate order evolve at $T_{\text{N}1}\approx 22.2 \text{ K}$ and $T_{\text{N}2}\approx 19 \text{ K}$. First, a spin-density wave develops with moments lying in the $ac$ plane. In its multiferroic phase below $T_{\text{N}2}$, LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a spiral arrangement with an additional spin-component along $b$. Therefore, the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism fully explains the multiferroic behavior in this material. A partially unbalanced multiferroic domain distribution was observed even in the absence of an applied electric field. For both phases only a slight temperature dependence of the incommensurability was observed and there is no commensurate phase emerging at low temperature or at finite magnetic fields up to $6\text{ T}$. LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ thus exhibits a simple phase diagram with the typical sequence of transitions for a type-II multiferroic material.

The structural distortion and magnetoelastic coupling induced through commensurate magnetism has been investigated by neutron diffraction in structurally related MnWO$_4$ and NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$. Both systems exhibit a competition of incommensurate spiral and commensurate spin up-up-down-down ordering along the magnetic chains. In the latter commensurate phases, the alternatingly parallel and antiparallel arrangement of Fe$^{3+}$ respectively Mn$^{2+}$ moments leads to sizeable bond-angle modulation and thus to magnetic dimerization. For NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ this structural distortion has been determined to be strongest for the low-field up-up-down-down arrangement, and the structural refinement yields a bond-angle modulation of $\pm 1.15(16)$ degrees. In the commensurate phase of MnWO$_4$, superstructure reflections signal a comparable structural dimerization and thus strong magneto-elastic coupling different to that driving the multiferroic order. Pronounced anharmonic second- and third-order reflections in the incommensurate and multiferroic phase of MnWO$_4$ result from tiny commensurate fractions that can depin multiferroic domains.

We present a study of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic properties of the multiferroic or linear magnetoelectric substitution series [(NH$_4$)$_{1-x}$K$_x$]$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)]. Pyroelectric currents, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermodynamic properties were examined on large single crystals of the erythrosiderite compounds and detailed magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams are derived for three different substitution levels. With increasing potassium concentration the material is tuned from a multiferroic ($x \le 0.06$) to a linear magnetoelectric ($x \ge 0.15$) ground state. In contrast to the respective pure parent compounds with $x=0$ or 1, however, the ferroelectric or linear magnetoelectric polarization in none of the substituted samples is switchable by external electric fields, because these samples exhibit a significant electric polarization already above the magnetic ordering transition. The polarization arises at a higher-lying structural phase transition that is examined by THz spectroscopy and, on a deuterated pure single crystal, by comprehensive neutron-diffraction experiments. The structural phase transition is attributed to an ordering of NH$_4^+$ tetrahedra but does not break inversion symmetry in the pure material, while a finite K content causes pyroelectricity.

Quantum spin liquids represent a magnetic ground state arising in the presence of strong quantum fluctuations that preclude ordering down to zero temperature and leave clear fingerprints in the excitation spectra. While theory bears a variety of possible quantum spin liquid phases their experimental realization is still scarce. Here, we report the first experimental evidence of a vector-chiral quantum spin liquid state in the $S=1/2$ spin chain compound LiCuVO$_4$ from measurements of the complex permittivity $\varepsilon^*$ in the GHz range. In zero magnetic field our results show short-lived thermally activated chiral fluctuations above the multiferroic phase transition at $T_\mathrm{N}=2.4$ K with divergent life-times when approaching $T_\mathrm{N}$. In $\varepsilon^*$ this fluctuation dynamics are seen as the slowing down of a relaxation with a critical dynamical exponent $ν_ξz \approx 1.3$ in agreement with mean-field predictions. When using a magnetic field to suppress $T_N$ towards 0 K the influence of quantum fluctuations is increased until they condense into the chrial spin liquid phase below 400 mK. Within this phase we measure a nearly-gapless chiral soliton excitation with a tiny energy gap of $E_\mathrm{SE}\approx14.1$ $μ$eV.

LiCuVO$_4$ is a model system of a 1D spin-1/2 chain that enters a planar spin-spiral ground state below its Néel temperature of 2.4 K due to competing nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions. The spin-spiral state is multiferroic with an electric polarization along the a axis which has been proposed to be caused purely by the spin supercurrent mechanism. With external magnetic fields in c direction T$_N$ can be suppressed down to 0 K at 7.4 T. Here we report dynamical measurements of the polarization from P(E)-hysteresis loops, magnetic field dependent pyro-current and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy as well as thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements at very low temperatures. The multiferroic transition is accompanied by strong anomalies in the thermal expansion and magnetostriction coefficients and we find slow switching times of electric domain reversal. Both observations suggest a sizable magnetoelastic coupling in LiCuVO$_4$. By analyzing the non-linear polarization dynamics we derive domain sizes in the nm range that are probably caused by Li defects.

Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: the elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double 'slits' in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

Lattice and magnetic dynamics of NiWO$_4$ single crystals were studied with the use of polarized Raman spectroscopy in a wide temperature range of 10-300 K including the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_N$=62 K. Static magnetic measurements were used for characterizing the single crystals. All Raman-active phonons predicted by the group theory were observed and characterized. Magnetic symmetry analysis was used to determine possible magnetic space groups for NiWO$_4$ which can be also applied to any other isostructural crystal with the same magnetic propagation vector k=(1/2,0,0). Though the magnetic structure of NiWO$_4$ is relatively simple, a rich set of narrow and broad magnetic excitations with different polarization properties and temperature behavior in the very broad frequency range of 10-200 cm$^{-1}$ was observed, with some modes surviving at temperatures much higher than $T_N$ up to 220 K. Part of the magnetic excitations was identified as acoustic and optical spin-wave branches which allow us to construct exchange structure and estimate exchange and anisotropy constants with the use of linear spin-wave theory. Since the magnetic structure can be described as exchange-coupled AFM chains of $S=1$ ions, previously unobserved magnetic excitation at 24 cm$^{-1}$ is tentatively assigned to a Haldane gap mode.

The crystal structure of the double tungstate NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ arises from that of the spin-driven multiferroic MnWO$_4$ by inserting non-magnetic Na layers. NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a three-dimensional incommensurate spin-spiral structure at low temperature and zero magnetic field, which, however, competes with commensurate order induced by magnetic field. The incommensurate zero-field phase corresponds to the condensation of a single irreducible representation but it does not imply ferroelectric polarization because spirals with opposite chirality coexist. Sizable anharmonic modulations emerge in this incommensurate structure, which are accompanied by large magneto-elastic anomalies, while the onset of the harmonic order is invisible in the thermal expansion coefficient. In magnetic fields applied along the monoclinic axis, we observe a first-order transition to a commensurate structure that again is accompanied by large magneto-elastic effects. The large magnetoelastic coupling, a reduction of the $b$ lattice parameter, is thus associated only with the commensurate order. Upon releasing the field at low temperature, the magnetic order transforms to another commensurate structure that considerably differs from the incommensurate low-temperature phase emerging upon zero-field cooling. The latter phase, which exhibits a reduced ordered moment, seems to be metastable.

Applying magnetic fields along a or c suppresses $T_\textrm{N}$ completely at about 2.1 T. In addition, we find an adjacent intermediate phase before the magnetization saturates close to 2.5 T. For magnetic fields applied along b, a surprisingly rich phase diagram arises. Two additional transitions are observed at critical fields $μ_0 H_{SF1}\simeq 0.25$ T and $μ_0 H_{SF2}\simeq 0.7$ T, which we propose to arise from a two-stage spin-flop transition.

We present a study of the anisotropy of the dielectric, magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of the multiferroic clinopyroxene NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. Pyroelectric currents, dielectric constants and magnetic susceptibilities as well as the thermal expansion and the magnetostriction were examined on large synthetic single crystals of NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. The spontaneous electric polarization detected below $T_{\rm C}\simeq 11.6$ K in an antiferromagnetically ordered state ($T_{\rm N}\simeq 13$ K) is mainly lying within the $ac$ plane with a small component along $b$, indicating a triclinic symmetry of the multiferroic phase of NaFeGe$_2$O$_6$. The electric polarization can be strongly modified by applying magnetic fields along different directions. We derive detailed magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams and identify three multiferroic low-temperature phases, which are separated by a non-ferroelectric, antiferromagnetically ordered state from the paramagnetic high-temperature phase.

We present a detailed investigation of their linear magnetoelectric properties by measurements of pyroelectric currents, dielectric constants and magnetization. The anisotropy of the linear magnetoelectric effect of the K-based and Rb-based compound is consistent with the magnetic point group $m'm'm'$, already reported in literature. A symmetry analysis of the magnetoelectric effect of the Cs-based compound allows to determine the magnetic point group $mmm'$ and to develop a model for its magnetic structure. By using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the radiofrequency and microwave range we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the multiferroic chiral antiferromagnet MnWO$_4$. Above the multiferroic phase transition at $T_{N2} \approx 12.6$ K we observe a critical slowing down of the corresponding magnetoelectric fluctuations resembling the soft-mode behavior in canonical ferroelectrics. This electric field driven excitation carries much less spectral weight than ordinary phonon modes. Also the critical slowing down of this mode scales with an exponent larger than one which is expected for magnetic second order phase transition scenarios. Therefore the investigated dynamics have to be interpreted as the softening of an electrically active magnetic excitation, an electromagnon.

We report on polarized infrared reflectivity measurements of multiferroic, monoclinic MnWO4 between 10K and 295K. The full dielectric tensor and the frequency dependence of the orientation of the principal axes have been determined in the frequency range of the phonons. All infrared-active phonon modes (7 A_u modes and 8 B_u modes) are unambiguously identified. In particular the strongest B_u modes have been overlooked in previous studies, in which the monoclinic symmetry was neglected in the analysis. Using a generalized Drude-Lorentz model, we determine the temperature dependence of the phonon parameters, including the orientation of the B_u modes within the ac plane. The phonon parameters and their temperature dependence have been discussed controversially in previous studies, which do not include a full polarization analysis. Our data does not confirm any of the anomalies reported above 20K. However, in the paramagnetic phase we find a drastic reduction of the spectral weights of the weakest A_u mode and of the weakest B_u mode with increasing temperature. Below 20K, the parameters of the A_u phonon modes for E||b show only subtle changes, which demonstrate a finite but weak coupling between lattice dynamics and magnetism in MnWO4. A quantitative comparison of our infrared data with the quasi-static dielectric constant epsilon_b indicates that the spectral weight of the electromagnon is tiny for E||b, in particular much smaller than the weak changes of the spectral weight of the phonons.

The time dependence of switching multiferroic domains in MnWO$_4$ has been studied by time-resolved polarized neutron diffraction. Inverting an external electric field inverts the chiral magnetic component within rise times ranging between a few and some tens of milliseconds in perfect agreement with macroscopic techniques. There is no evidence for any faster process in the inversion of the chiral magnetic structure. The time dependence is well described by a temperature-dependent rise time suggesting a well-defined process of domain reversion. As expected, the rise times decrease when heating towards the upper boundary of the ferroelectric phase. However, switching also becomes faster upon cooling towards the lower boundary, which is associated with a first-order phase transition.

By using broadband linear and nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the chiral antiferromagnet MnWO4. In the multiferroic phase the dielectric response is dominated by the dynamics of domains and domain walls which is strongly dependent on the stimulating electric field. The mean switching time reaches values in the minute range in the middle of the multiferroic temperature regime at T=10 K but unexpectedly decays again on approaching the lower, first-order phase boundary at T_N1=7.6K. The switchability of the ferroelectric domains denotes a pinning-induced threshold and can be described considering a growth-limited scenario with an effective growth dimension of d=1.8. The rise of the effective dynamical coercive field on cooling below the TN2 is much stronger compared to the usual ferroelectrics and can be described by a power law E_c ~ν^1/2. The latter questions the feasibility of fast-switching devices based on this type of material.

We report the onset of ferroelectricity below ~6.9 K within an antiferromagnetically ordered state ($T_N \sim 7.25 K$). Combining these data with measurements of thermal expansion, magnetostriction and specific heat, we derive detailed magnetic field versus temperature phase diagrams. Depending on the direction of the magnetic field up to three different multiferroic phases are identified, which are separated by a magnetically ordered, but non-ferroelectric phase from the paramagnetic phase. Exploiting both thermal as well as virtual excitations of higher crystal field states, we find that the spin chain is in the XY-limit with an anisotropy $J_z/J_\perp \approx 0.12$ substantially smaller than previously believed. A spin-flop Ising quantum phase transition occurs at a critical field of $μ_0 H_b^{\rm cr} \approx 2$ T before around 3.5 T the description in terms of an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain becomes inapplicable.

We describe the full characterization of the biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB3O6 (BiBO) as a polarization entangled photon source using non-collinear type-II parametric down-conversion. We consider the relevant parameters for crystal design, such as cutting angles, polarization of the photons, effective nonlinearity, spatial and temporal walk-offs, crystal thickness and the effect of the pump laser bandwidth. Experimental results showing entanglement generation with high rates and a comparison to the well investigated beta-BaB2O4 (BBO) crystal are presented as well. Changing the down-conversion crystal of a polarization entangled photon source from BBO to BiBO enhances the generation rate as if the pump power was increased by more than three times. Such an improvement is currently required for the generation of multiphoton entangled states.

The temporal progression of the spatially resolved domain structure was imaged with nanosecond resolution by optical second harmonic generation and compared to the quasi-static domain reversal. A qualitative model gives an estimate of why the magnetoelectric order-parameter reversal in the magnetically induced ferroelectrics is not inherently ultrafast.

The observed linear polarization dependence, analyzed by full-multiplet calculations, is used to determine the ground state wave function of the magnetic Mn2+ and Co2+ ions. The impact of the local structure and the spin-orbit coupling on the orbital moment is discussed in terms of the single-ion anisotropy. It is shown that the orbital moment in CoWO4 is responsible for the collinear antiferromagnetism, while the small size of spin-orbit coupling effects make spiral magnetic order in MnWO4 possible, enabling the material to be multiferroic.

A comprehensive analysis of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) on an incommensurate (IC) magnetically ordered state is presented using multiferroic MnWO4 as model compound. Two fundamentally different SHG contributions coupling to the primary IC magnetic order or to secondary commensurate projections of the IC state, respectively, are distinguished. Whereas the latter can be described within the formalism of the 122 commensurate magnetic point groups the former involves a breakdown of the conventional macroscopic symmetry analysis because of its sensitivity to the lower symmetry of the local environment in a crystal lattice. Our analysis thus foreshadows the fusion of the hitherto disjunct fields of nonlinear optics and IC order in condensed-matter systems.

The results of muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on two pyroxene compounds LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6 demonstrate that despite their underlying structural similarity the magnetic ordering is considerably different. In LiFeSi2O6 a single muon precession frequency is observed below TN, consistent with a single peak at TN in the heat capacity and a commensurate magnetic structure. In applied magnetic fields the heat capacity peak splits in two. In contrast, for natural NaFeSi2O6, where multiferroicity has been observed in zero-magnetic-field, a rapid Gaussian depolarization is observed showing that the magnetic structure is more complex. Synthetic NaFeSi2O6 shows a single muon precession frequency but with a far larger dam** rate than in the lithium compound. Heat capacity measurements reproduce the phase diagrams previously derived from other techniques and demonstrate that the magnetic entropy is mostly associated with the build up of correlations in the quasi-one-dimensional Fe3+ chains.

Pyroxenes with the general formula $AM$Si$_2$O$_6$ ($A$ = mono- or divalent metal, $M$ = di- or trivalent metal) are shown to be a new class of multiferroic materials. In particular, we have found so far that NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ becomes ferroelectric in a magnetically ordered state below $\simeq 6$ K. Similarly, magnetically driven ferroelectricity is also detected in the Li homologues, LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 18$ K) and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 11$ K). In all these monoclinic systems the electric polarization can be strongly modified by magnetic fields. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, pyroelectric current and dielectric constants (and their dependence on magnetic field) are performed using a natural crystal of aegirine (NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$) and synthetic crystals of LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ grown from melt solution. For NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ a temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram for NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ is proposed. Exchange constants are computed on the basis of {\it ab initio} band structure calculations. The possibility of a spiral magnetic structure caused by frustration as origin of the multiferroic behaviour is discussed. We propose that other pyroxenes may also be multiferroic, and that the versatility of this family offers an exceptional opportunity to study general conditions for and mechanisms of magnetically driven ferroelectricity.

Based upon recent theoretical predictions MnWO$_4$ should exhibit ferroelectric polarization coexisting with the proper magnetic structure. We have confirmed the multiferroic state below 13 K by observing a finite electrical polarization in the magnetically ordered state via pyroelectric current measurements.

Abstract:
We present a detailed study of the phonon modes of the monoclinic compound BiB3O6 based on polarized reflectivity measurements on single crystals. The spectra are analysed by means of a generalized Drude-Lorentz model, which allows us to resolve the modes of A and B symmetry.
