Abstract:
We report giant anisotropy in thermoelectric power factor ($S^2σ$) of marcasite structure-type PtSb$_{1.4}$Sn$_{0.6}$. PtSb$_{1.4}$Sn$_{0.6}$, synthesized using ambient pressure flux growth method upon mixing Sb and Sn on the same atomic site, is a new phase different from both PtSb$_2$ and PtSn$_2$ that crystallize in the cubic $Pa\bar{3}$ pyrite and $Fm\bar{3}m$ fluorite unit cell symmetry, resp…

Giant difference in $S^2σ$ for heat flow applied along different principal directions of the orthorhombic unit cell mostly stems from anisotropic Seebeck coefficients.

Abstract:
Ca$_{10}$GdCdSb$_9$ is a new Zintl phase with a large unit cell volume (~2500 Å3) and a very complex, disordered structure, which can drive the realization of ultralow thermal conductivity in this material. The measured Seebeck coefficient, $α$, for single-crystalline Ca$_{10}$GdCdSb$_9$ approaches 350 $μ$V/K at 600 K. The experimentally determined electrical resistivity of Ca$_{10}$GdCdSb$_9$ is…

The experimentally determined electrical resistivity of Ca$_{10}$GdCdSb$_9$ is very low, leading to a remarkably high-power factor PF of 23.2 $μ$W/cm.K$^2$ at 460 K. The extraordinary PF value in this material, higher than those of the currently known state-of-the-art materials within the same temperature range, suggests that the Ca$_{10}$RECdSb$_9$ material system (RE = rare earth metal) could serve as a viable playground to harnessing new efficient thermoelectric generators.

Intrinsic, two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductors are an important class of materials for spin-charge conversion applications. Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ retains long-range magnetic order in bilayer at cryogenic temperatures and shows complex magnetic interactions with considerable magnetic anisotropy. Here, we performed a series of structural, magnetic, X-ray scattering, electronic, thermal transport and first-principles calculation studies which reveal that localized electronic charge carriers in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ are dressed by surrounding lattice and are involved in polaronic transport via hop** that is sensitive on details of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This opens possibility for manipulation of charge transport in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ - based devices by electron-phonon- and spin-orbit coupling-based tailoring of polaron properties.

We report discovery of new antiferromagnetic semimetal EuZnSb$_2$, obtained and studied in the form of single crystals. Electric resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity indicate antiferromagnetic order of Eu with $T_N$ = 20 K. The effective moment of Eu$^{2+}$ inferred from the magnetization and specific heat measurement is 3.5 $μ_B$, smaller than the theoretical value of Eu$^{2+}$ due to presence of both Eu$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$. Magnetic field-dependent resistivity measurements suggest dominant quasi two dimensional Fermi surfaces whereas the first-principle calculations point to the presence of Dirac fermions. Therefore, EuZnSb$_2$ could represent the first platform to study the interplay of dynamical charge fluctuations, localized magnetic 4$f$ moments and Dirac states with Sb orbital character.

Magnetic frustration in metals is scarce and hard to pinpoint, but exciting due to the possibility of the emergence of fascinating novel phases. The cubic intermetallic compound HoInCu$_4$ with all holmium atoms on an fcc lattice, exhibits partial magnetic frustration, yielding a ground state where half of the Ho moments remain without long-range order, as evidenced by our neutron scattering experiments. The substitution of In with Cd results in HoCdCu$_4$ in a full breakdown of magnetic frustration. Consequently we found a fully ordered magnetic structure in our neutron diffraction experiments. These findings are in agreement with the local energy scales and crystal electric field excitations, which we determined from specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering data. The electronic density of states for the itinerant bands acts as tuning parameter for the ratio between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions and thus for magnetic frustration.

Abstract:
The compound Ce3Co4Sn13 is an extremely heavy cubic heavy fermion system with a low temperature electronic specific heat of order ~4 J/mol-K2. If the compound is nonmagnetic, it would be one of the heaviest nonmagnetic Ce-based heavy fermions reported to date and therefore would be expected to lie extremely close to a quantum critical point. If the compound is nonmagnetic, it would be one of the heaviest nonmagnetic Ce-based heavy fermions reported to date and therefore would be expected to lie extremely close to a quantum critical point. However, a broad peak of unknown origin is observed at 0.8 K in the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, suggesting the possibility of antiferromagnetic order. We present neutron diffraction data from polycrystalline samples which do not show any sign of magnetic scattering below 0.8 K. In addition, we present inelastic neutron scattering data from a single crystal sample which is consistent with the 1.2 K energy scale for Kondo spin fluctuations determined from specific heat measurements.

Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at applied pressures up to 55 kbar have been carried out on single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet U_3Ni_5Al_19, which crystallizes in the Gd_3Ni_5Al_19 orthorhombic structure with two inequivalent U sites. At ambient pressure, a logarithmic T-dependence of the specific heat and T-linear electrical resistivity below 5 K indicates non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior in the presence of bulk antiferromagnetic order at T_N=23 K. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal a crossover from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid behavior at intermediate pressures between 46 kbar and 51 kbar, followed by a return to NFL T^{3/2} behavior at higher pressures. These results provide evidence for an ambient pressure quantum critical point and an additional antiferromagnetic instability at P_c=60 kbar.

Abstract:
Thermal expansion and magnetic susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature are reported for YbGaGe. Despite the fact that this material has been claimed to show zero thermal expansion over a wide temperature range, we observe thermal expansion typical of metals and Pauli paramagnetic behavior, which perhaps indicates strong sample dependence in this system.
