We continue the holographic exploration of the conformal manifold of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ S-fold SCFTs constructed by gauging the flavor symmetry of the Gaiotto-Witten $T[U(N)]$ theory. We show how to uplift the two-parameter family of AdS$_4$ vacua dual to this conformal manifold to 10d backgrounds of type IIB supergravity. We use these uplifted solutions to shed new light on the mysterious nature of the infinite distance limit on the conformal manifold and to study probe strings and D3-branes. This analysis uncovers an intriguing structure of the $S^3$ partition function of the S-fold SCFTs which resembles the giant graviton expansion of the superconformal index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We also show how to each member of the family of supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua one can associate a consistent truncation to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity and use this result, in conjunction with holography, to calculate the large $N$ partition function of the 3d S-fold SCFT on compact Euclidean manifolds. Finally, we generalize the supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua to a four-parameter family of non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions.

We study the logarithmic corrections to various CFT partition functions in the context of the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence for theories arising on the worldvolume of M2-branes. We utilize four-dimensional gauged supergravity and heat kernel methods and present general expressions for the logarithmic corrections to the gravitational on-shell action and black hole entropy for a number of different supergravity backgrounds. We outline several subtle features of these calculations and contrast them with a similar analysis of logarithmic corrections performed directly in the eleven-dimensional uplift of a given four-dimensional supergravity background. We find results consistent with AdS/CFT provided that the infinite sum over KK modes on the internal space is regularized in a specific manner. This analysis leads to an explicit expression for the logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Kerr-Newmann and Reissner-Nordström black holes in AdS$_4$. Our results also have important implications for effective field theory coupled to gravity in AdS$_4$ and for the existence of scale-separated AdS$_4$ vacua in string theory, which come in the form of new constraints on the field content and mass spectrum of matter fields.

We calculate quantum corrections to the entropy of four-dimensional de Sitter space induced by higher-derivative terms in the gravitational action and by one-loop effects. Employing the intertwinement in semiclassical gravity of Euclidean de Sitter and anti-de Sitter saddles, we embed effective de Sitter gravity theories in M-theory and express the entropy in terms of the regularized Euclidean anti-de Sitter action on an auxiliary $\mathrm{EAdS}_4 \times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ background. We conjecture that the partition function of the holographically dual 3d ABJM CFT determines the explicit form of the corrections to the de Sitter entropy. This includes a logarithmic term, the coefficient of which, we show, agrees with an independent one-loop calculation around the $-S^4 \times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$ Euclidean de Sitter saddle. This provides evidence that the microscopic degrees of freedom behind the entropy of four-dimensional de Sitter space in gravitational theories with a holographic dual description are encapsulated by the path integral of the Euclidean CFT on the three-sphere.

We study the large $N$ limit of some supersymmetric partition functions of the $\mathrm{U}(N)_{k}\times \mathrm{U}(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory computed by supersymmetric localization. We conjecture an explicit expression, valid to all orders in the large $N$ limit, for the partition function on the $\mathrm{U}(1)\times \mathrm{U}(1)$ invariant squashed sphere in the presence of real masses in terms of an Airy function. Several non-trivial tests of this conjecture are presented. This so-called $\mathbf{E}$ theory is closely related to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and has a holographic description in terms of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orientifold of AdS$_5\times S^5$. Using recent matrix model results based on supersymmetric localization we develop efficient numerical methods to calculate two- and three-point functions of certain single trace operators as well as 1/2-BPS Wilson loop expectation values as a function of the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. We use our numerical results to arrive at simple analytic expressions for these correlators valid up to the sixth order in the $λ^{-1/2}$ strong coupling expansion. These results provide explicit field theory predictions for the $α'$ corrections to the supergravity approximation of type IIB string theory on the AdS$_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orientifold.

We focus on the supersymmetric limit of this solution and employ holography to show that the result can be expressed purely in terms of angular momentum fugacities and the 't Hooft anomalies for the $\mathrm{U}(1)_{\mathrm R}$ R-symmetry of the dual 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT. This holographic calculation is in perfect agreement with recent studies of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal index ``on the second sheet''. We illustrate the utility of these results in two classes of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ holographic SCFTs that have 't Hooft anomalies with suitable large $N$ behavior that leads to non-trivial corrections at first subleading order in the $1/N$ expansion. We also explicitly calculate the Wald entropy of the black hole solution and delineate the leading four-derivative corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

We study the importance of spin structures as defining data for 11d supergravity backgrounds of the form AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbf{Z}_k$ with a free orbifold action. For a generic choice of the orbifold action, there is only one spin structure that preserves invariant Killing spinors. There are, however, orbifold actions that allow for more than one spin structure with preserved Killing spinors. In these cases the two different spin structures should lead to distinct holographically dual 3d SCFTs with different amounts of supersymmetry. We illustrate this phenomenon by studying the KK spectrum of 11d supergravity on AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbf{Z}_4$. For one choice of spin structure this background is dual to the 3d $\mathcal{N}=6$ ABJM theory at level $k=4$. For the alternative choice of spin structure our results suggest that the holographic dual is a different 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT and we discuss some of its properties.

We use conformal supergravity techniques to study four-derivative corrections in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. We show that the four-derivative Lagrangian for the propagating degrees of freedom of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ gravity multiplet is determined by two real dimensionless constants. We demonstrate that all solutions of the two-derivative equations of motion in the supergravity theory also solve the four-derivative equations of motion. These results are then applied to explicitly calculate the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the two-derivative equations of motion. The four-derivative terms in the supergravity Lagrangian modify the entropy and other thermodynamic observables for the black hole solutions of the theory. We calculate these corrections explicitly and demonstrate that the quantum statistical relation holds for general stationary black holes in the presence of the four-derivative corrections. Employing an embedding of this supergravity model in M-theory we show how to use supersymmetric localization results in the holographically dual three-dimensional SCFT to determine the unknown coefficients in the four-derivative supergravity action. This in turn leads to new detailed results for the first subleading $N^{\frac{1}{2}}$ correction to the large $N$ partition function of a class of three-dimensional SCFTs on compact Euclidean manifolds. In addition, we calculate explicitly the first subleading correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes in M-theory. Using results from Chern-Simons theory on hyperbolic three-manifolds and the 3d-3d correspondence we are able to constrain the two independent coefficients in the four-derivative supergravity Lagrangian. This in turn allows us to calculate the subleading terms in the large-$N$ expansion of supersymmetric partition functions for an infinite class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs of class $\mathcal{R}$. We also determine the leading correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes arising from wrapped M5-branes. In addition, we propose and test some conjectures about the perturbative partition function of Chern-Simons theory with complexified ADE gauge groups on closed hyperbolic three-manifolds.

We provide an alternative construction of this chiral algebra by performing an $Ω$-deformation~of a topological-holomorphic twist of the $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory on $\mathbf{R}^6$ and restricting to the cohomology of a specific supercharge. In addition, we show that the central charge of the chiral algebra can be obtained by performing equivariant integration of the anomaly polynomial of the six-dimensional theory. Furthermore, we generalize this construction to include orbifolds of the $\mathbf{R}^4$ transverse to the chiral algebra plane.

The solutions of the equations of motion in the two-derivative theory are not modified by the higher-derivative corrections. We use this to derive a general formula for the regularized on-shell action for any asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ solution of the theory and show how the higher-derivative corrections affect black hole thermodynamic quantities in a universal way. We employ our results in the context of holography to derive explicit expressions for the subleading corrections in the large $N$ expansion of supersymmetric partition functions on various compact manifolds for a large class of three-dimensional SCFTs.

We find new asymptotically locally AdS$_4$ Euclidean supersymmetric solutions of the STU model in four-dimensional gauged supergravity. These "black saddles" have an $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$ boundary at asymptotic infinity and cap off smoothly in the interior. The solutions can be uplifted to eleven dimensions and are holographically dual to the topologically twisted ABJM theory on $S^1\times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}}$. We show explicitly that the on-shell action of the black saddle solutions agrees exactly with the topologically twisted index of the ABJM theory in the planar limit for general values of the magnetic fluxes, flavor fugacities, and real masses. This agreement relies on a careful holographic renormalization analysis combined with a novel UV/IR holographic relation between supergravity parameters and field theory sources. The Euclidean black saddle solution space contains special points that can be Wick-rotated to regular Lorentzian supergravity backgrounds that correspond to the well-known supersymmetric dyonic AdS$_4$ black holes in the STU model.

We report on a systematic search for AdS$_5$ vacua corresponding to critical points of the potential in the five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=8$ SO(6) gauged supergravity. By employing Google's TensorFlow Machine Learning library, we find the total of 32 critical points including 5 previously known ones. All 27 new critical points are non-supersymmetric. We compute the mass spectra of scalar fluctuatons for all points and find that the non-supersymmetric AdS$_5$ vacua are perturbatively unstable. Many of the new critical points can be found analytically within consistent truncations of the $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with respect to discrete subgroups of the S(O(6)$\times$ GL(2,$\mathbb{R}$)) symmetry of the potential. In particular, we discuss in detail a $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-invariant truncation with 10 scalar fields and 15 critical points. We also compute explicitly the scalar potential in a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-invariant extension of that truncation to 18 scalar fields and reproduce 17 of the 32 critical points from the numerical search. Finally, we show that the full potential as a function of 42 scalar fields can be studied analytically using the so-called solvable parametrization. In particular, we find that all critical points lie in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant subspace spanned by 22 scalar fields.

The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped brane supergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemann surface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physical interpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover the details of this picture by focusing on $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ arising from M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. Using supersymmetric localization we compute the free energy and BPS Wilson loop vacuum expectation values for planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ in the strong coupling limit for $2\leq d<6$. The same calculation can also be performed in supergravity using the recently found spherical brane solutions. We find excellent agreement between the two sets of results. This constitutes a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal setting. The free energy of maximal SYM on $S^6$ diverges in the strong coupling limit which might signify the onset of little string theory. We show how this divergence can be regularized both in QFT and in supergravity. We also consider $d=7$ with a small negative 't Hooft coupling and show that the free energy and Wilson loop vacuum expectation value agree with the results from supergravity after addressing some subtleties.

The recent comprehensive numerical study of critical points of the scalar potential of four-dimensional N=8, SO(8) gauged supergravity using Machine Learning software has led to a discovery of a new N=1 vacuum with a triality-invariant SO(3) symmetry. Guided by the numerical data for that point, we obtain a consistent SO(3)xZ2-invariant truncation of the N=8 theory to an N=1 supergravity with three chiral multiplets. Critical points of the truncated scalar potential include both the N=1 point as well as two new non-supersymmetric and perturbatively unstable points not found by previous searches. Studying the structure of the submanifold of SO(3)xZ2-invariant supergravity scalars, we find that it has a simple interpretation as a submanifold of the 14-dimensional Z2^3-invariant scalar manifold (SU(1,1)/U(1))^7, for which we find a rather remarkable superpotential whose structure matches the single bit error correcting (7, 4) Hamming code. This 14-dimensional scalar manifold contains approximately one quarter of the known critical points. We also show that there exists a smooth supersymmetric domain wall which interpolates between the new N=1 AdS4 solution and the maximally supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum. Using holography, this result indicates the existence of an N=1 RG flow from the ABJM SCFT to a new strongly interacting conformal fixed point in the IR.

We study in detail the recently-found family of asymptotically AdS$_5\times S^5$ type IIB supergravity solutions dual to the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM theory with equal masses. The backgrounds exhibit a naked singularity and are labelled by a dimensionless parameter, $λ$, which is interpreted as the ratio of the gaugino condensate and the mass in the dual field theory. When $|λ|<1$ we show that the naked singularity is due to a smeared distribution of polarized $(p,q)$ five-branes. For this range of parameters we study the nature of the singularity using probe strings and show that the dual line operators exhibit screening behavior. These features are in line with the physics anticipated in the work of Polchinski-Strassler. For $|λ|=1$ the naked singularity has qualitatively different behavior which has no clear brane interpretation. We show that when $λ=1$ the singularity can be excised and replaced by a smooth Euclidean supergravity solution with an $S^4$ boundary.

The finite size of the sphere provides an IR cut-off for the gauge theory which is manifested in the supergravity solution as a smooth cap-off of the geometry. In the UV the size of the sphere plays no role and the backgrounds asymptote to the well-known supergravity solutions that describe the near-horizon limit of flat D$p$-branes. We study holographic renormalization group flows from four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs to either $\mathcal{N}=2$ or $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. Our approach is based on the framework of five-dimensional half-maximal supergravity with general gauging, which we use to study domain wall solutions interpolating between different supersymmetric AdS$_5$ vacua. We show that a holographic RG flow connecting two $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs is only possible if the flavor symmetry of the UV theory admits an ${\rm SO}(3)$ subgroup. In this case the ratio of the IR and UV central charges satisfies a universal relation which we also establish in field theory. In addition we provide several general examples of holographic flows from $\mathcal{N}=2$ to $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs and relate the ratio of the UV and IR central charges to the conformal dimension of the operator triggering the flow. Instrumental to our analysis is a derivation of the general conditions for AdS vacua preserving eight supercharges as well as for domain wall solutions preserving eight Poincare supercharges in half-maximal supergravity.

We exploit this fact to derive a universal formula which relates the planar limit of the topologically twisted index of these SCFTs and their three-sphere partition function. We then utilize this to account for the entropy of a large class of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_4$ magnetically charged black holes in M-theory and massive type IIA string theory. In this context we also discuss novel AdS$_2$ solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity which describe the near horizon region of large new families of supersymmetric black holes arising from M2-branes wrap** Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:
We show how to treat the superconformal algebras with eight Poincaré supercharges in a unified manner for spacetime dimension $2 < d\leq 6$. This formalism is ideally suited for analyzing the quadratic Casimir operator of the superconformal algebra and its use in deriving superconformal blocks. We illustrate this by an explicit construction of the superconformal blocks, for any value of the spacet…

We illustrate this by an explicit construction of the superconformal blocks, for any value of the spacetime dimension, for external protected scalar operators which are the lowest component of flavor current multiplets.

We study the partition function of odd-dimensional conformal field theories placed on spheres with a squashed metric. We establish that the round sphere provides a local extremum for the free energy which, in general, is not a global extremum. In addition, we show that the leading quadratic correction to the free energy around this extremum is proportional to the coefficient, $C_T$, determining the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT. For three-dimensional CFTs, we compute explicitly this proportionality constant for a class of squashing deformations which preserve an $SU(2)\times U(1)$ isometry group on the sphere. In addition, we evaluate the free energy as a function of the squashing parameter for theories of free bosons, free fermions, as well as CFTs holographically dual to Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We observe that, after suitable normalization, the dependence of the free energy on the squashing parameter for all these theories is nearly universal for a large region of parameter space and is well approximated by a simple quadratic function arising from holography. We generalize our results to five-dimensional CFTs and, in this context, we also study theories holographically dual to six-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

We focus on the supergravity description of this system and identify a "near horizon" limit in which we recover the recently classified supersymmetric seven-dimensional AdS solutions of massive type IIA supergravity. Using a consistent truncation to seven-dimensional gauged supergravity we construct a universal supersymmetric deformation of these AdS vacua. In the holographic dual six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal field theory this deformation describes a universal RG flow on the tensor branch of the vacuum moduli space triggered by a vacuum expectation value for a protected scalar operator of dimension four.

We evaluate the partition function of the free O(N) model on a two-parameter family of squashed three spheres. We also find new solutions of general relativity with negative cosmological constant and the same double squashed boundary geometry and analyse their thermodynamic properties. Remarkably, both systems exhibit a qualitatively similar behaviour over the entire configuration space of boundary geometries. Recent formulations of dS/CFT enable one to interpret the field theory partition function as a function of the two squashing parameters as the Hartle-Hawking wave function in a minisuperspace model of anisotropic deformations of de Sitter space. The resulting probability distribution is normalisable and globally peaked at the round three sphere, with a low amplitude of boundary geometries with negative scalar curvature.

We construct the five-dimensional supergravity dual of the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N} =4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use it to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit. The holographic RG flow solutions are smooth and preserve four supercharges. As a novel feature compared to the holographic duals of $\mathcal{N} = 1^*$ on $\mathbb{R}^4$, in our backgrounds the five-dimensional dilaton has a non-trivial profile, and the gaugino condensate is fixed in terms of the mass-deformation parameters. Important aspects of the analysis involve characterizing the ambiguities in the partition function of non-conformal $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theories on $S^4$ as well as the action of S-duality on the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory.

Along the way we uncover a universal relation between the conformal anomaly coefficients of four-dimensional and two-dimensional SCFTs connected by an RG flow across dimensions. We also observe an interesting novel phenomenon in which the superconformal R-symmetry mixes with baryonic symmetries along the RG flow.

The equivariant integration is defined with respect to the Cartan subalgebra of the global symmetry algebra that commutes with a given supercharge. We test our proposal extensively by computing the supersymmetric Casimir energy for large classes of superconformal field theories, with and without known Lagrangian descriptions, in two, four and six dimensions.
