Using a combination of neutron scattering, calorimetry, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and analytic results we uncover confinement effects in depleted, partially magnetized quantum spin ladders. We show that introducing non-magnetic impurities into magnetized spin ladders leads to the emergence of a new characteristic length L in the otherwise scale-free Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (serving as the effective low-energy model). This results in universal LT scaling of staggered susceptibilities. Comparison of simulation results with experimental phase diagrams of prototypical spin ladder compounds DIMPY and BPCB yields excellent agreement.

The local dynamic structure factor shows $\hbarω/T$ scaling behavior characteristic of a quantum critical point. The deviation of the measured critical exponent from spin wave theoretical expectations are attributed to disorder. Another effect of disorder is local excitations above the magnon band. Their energy, structure factor and temperature dependence are well explained by simple strong-bond dimers associated with Br-impurity sites.

We report low temperature electron spin resonance experimental and theoretical studies of an archetype $S=1/2$ strong-rung spin ladder material (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$. Unexpected dynamics is detected deep in the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid regime. Close to the point where the system is half-magnetized (and believed to be equivalent to a gapless easy plane chain in zero field) we observed orientation-dependent spin gap and anomalous $g$-factor values. Field theoretical analysis demonstrates that the observed low-energy excitation modes in magnetized (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ are solitonic excitations caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction presence.

It is suggested that the presaturation phase represents spin-nematic order or other multi-magnon condensate. The phase diagrams within the long-range ordered dome are qualitatively different for each geometry. In particular, multiple transitions are identified in the field along the chain direction.

We have found an unusual competition of two frustration mechanisms in the 2D quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. The key actors are the alternation of single-ion planar anisotropy direction of the individual magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, and their arrangement in a distorted triangular lattice structure. In particular, the uniquely oriented Ising-type anisotropy emerges from the competition of easy-plane ones, and for a magnetic field applied along this axis one finds a cascade of five ordered phases at low temperatures. Two of these phases feature magnetization plateaux. The low-field one is supposed to be a consequence of a collinear ground state stabilized by the anisotropy, while the other plateau bears characteristics of an "up-up-down" state exclusive for lattices with triangular exchange patterns. Such coexistence of the magnetization plateaux is a fingerprint of competition between the anisotropy and the geometric frustration in Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$.

A Faraday force magnetometer is presented for measurements of magnetization at temperatures down to 100~mK and in magnetic fields up to 14~T. The specimen is mounted on a flexible cantilever forming a force-sensing capacitor in combination with a fixed back plate. Two different cantilever designs are presented. A torsion resistant cantilever allows to measure magnetization of highly anisotropic single crystal samples. Measurements of the metal organic quantum magnets (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) and NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4 SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) demonstrate the device's capabilities. Routinely, a specimen's magnetic moment is measured with a resolution better than $10^{-7}$ A$\,$m$^2$ ($10^{-4}$ emu). The device in miniaturized to fit is almost any cryostat.

Starting from the fully frustrated ladder, for which we derive the low-energy spectrum, we show that bound states are generically present close to $k=0$ in the dynamical structure factor of spin ladders above $H_{c 1}$, and that they are characterized by a field-independent binding energy and an intensity that grows with $H-H_{c 1}$. These predictions are shown to explain quantitatively the split modes observed in BPCB.

Single crystal samples of the frustrated quasi one-dimensional quantum magnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ are investigated by magnetic, thermodynamic, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. Quantum phase transitions between the gapped, magnetically ordered and fully saturated phases are observed. Surprisingly, the former has a distinctive three-dimensional character, while the latter is dominated by one-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations. The entire $H$-$T$ phase diagram is mapped out and found to be substantially anisotropic. In particular, the lower critical fields differ by over 50\% depending on the direction of applied field, while the upper ones are almost isotropic, as is the magnetization above saturation. The ESR spectra are strongly dependent on field orientation and point to a helical structure with a rigidly defined spin rotation plane.

Magnetization, magnetocaloric, calorimetric, neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on single crystals of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The low-temperature crystal structure is found to be of a lower symmetry than previously assumed. The result is a more complicated model spin Hamiltonian, which we infer from measurements of the spin wave dispersion spectrum. The main finding is a novel spin state which emerges in high magnetic fields after antiferromagnetic order is terminated at $H_{c1}\simeq 4.0$ T. It is a distinct thermodynamic phase with a well-defined phase boundary at $H_{c2}\simeq 6.5$ T and is clearly separate from the fully saturated phase. Yet, it shows no conventional (dipolar) magnetic long range order. We argue that it is fully consistent with the expectations for a quantum bond-nematic state.

By comparison to a strong coupling expansion calculation of the triplet dispersion for a spin ladder with anisotropic exchange, weakly anisotropic leg interactions are identified as the dominant source of magnetic anisotropy in BPCB. Based on these results, we discuss the nature of magnetic exchange anisotropy in BPCB and in related transition-metal insulators.

By means of inelastic neutron scattering we investigate finite temperature dynamics in the quantum spin ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) near the magnetic field induced quantum critical point with dynamical exponent $z=2$. We observe universal finite-temperature scaling of the transverse local dynamic structure factor in spectacular quantitative agreement with long-standing theoretical predictions. At the same time, already at rather low temperatures, we observe strong non-universal longitudinal fluctuations. To separate the two, we make use of an intrinsic leg-exchange symmetry of the spin ladder. Complementary measurements of specific heat also reveal striking scaling behavior near the quantum critical point.

Critical correlations characteristic of the predicted $z=2$, $d=1$ quantum phase transition occurring at saturation are shown to be consistent with the observed neutron spectra. The data is well described with a scaling function computed using a free fermion description of the spins, valid close to saturation, and the corresponding scaling limits. One of the most prominent non-universal spectral features of the data is a novel thermally activated longitudinal mode that remains underdamped across most of the Brillouin zone.

Magnetic and lattice excitations in the quantum antiferromagnet (C$_4$H$_{12}$N$_2$)Cu$_2$Cl$_6$ (PHCC) are studied across two pressure-induced phase transition at $P_c=4.3~\mathrm{kbar}$ and $P_1=13.4~\mathrm{kbar}$ using Raman spectroscopy. It is confirmed that neither transition is a result of a structural transformation. Magnetic scattering is detected. It shows a pronounced pressure dependence and undergoes substantial changes at both transitions. The results are in clear contradiction with previous neutron studies, which detected only minor changes of the magnon spectrum at $P_1$. A number of phonons show anomalous frequency shifts at low temperatures. This effect is pressure dependent and for two of the observed phonons dramatically reverses sign at around $P_1$. The anomalous behavior is attributed to strong magnetoelastic coupling in PHCC.
