Abstract:
A planner aims to target individuals who exceed a threshold in a characteristic, such as wealth or ability. The individuals can rank their friends according to the characteristic. We study a strategy-proof mechanism for the planner to use the rankings for targeting. We discuss how the mechanism works in practice, when the rankings may contain errors.

Targeting in social networks with anonymized information

This paper studies whether a planner who only has information about the network topology can discriminate among agents according to their network position. The planner proposes a simple menu of contracts, one for each location, in order to maximize total welfare, and agents choose among the menu. This mechanism is immune to deviations by single agents, and to deviations by groups of agents of sizes 2, 3 and 4 if side-payments are ruled out. However, if compensations are allowed, groups of agents may have an incentive to jointly deviate from the optimal contract in order to exploit other agents. We identify network topologies for which the optimal contract is group incentive compatible with transfers: undirected networks and regular oriented trees, and network topologies for which the planner must assign uniform quantities: single root and nested neighborhoods directed networks.

Individuals, connected on a social network, only have local information about the ranking. We show that a planner can construct an ex post incentive compatible and efficient mechanism if and only if every pair of friends has a friend in common. We characterize the windmill network as the sparsest social network for which the planner can always construct a complete ranking.

Centrality Measures in Networks

We show that prominent centrality measures in network analysis are all based on additively separable and linear treatments of statistics that capture a node's position in the network. This enables us to provide a taxonomy of centrality measures that distills them to varying on two dimensions: (i) which information they make use of about nodes' positions, and (ii) how that information is weighted as a function of distance from the node in question. The three sorts of information about nodes' positions that are usually used -- which we refer to as "nodal statistics" -- are the paths from a given node to other nodes, the walks from a given node to other nodes, and the geodesics between other nodes that include a given node. Using such statistics on nodes' positions, we also characterize the types of trees such that centrality measures all agree, and we also discuss the properties that identify some path-based centrality measures.

Calderón-Zygmund decompositions of functions have been used to prove weak-type (1,1) boundedness of singular integral operators. In many examples, the decomposition is done with respect to a family of balls that corresponds to some family of dilations. We study singular integral operators $T$ that require more particular families of balls, providing new spaces of homogeneous type. Rotations play a decisive role in the construction of these balls. Boundedness of $T$ can then be shown via Calderón-Zygmund decompositions with respect to this space of homogeneous type. We prove weak-type (1,1) and $\LP^p$ estimates for operators $T$ acting on $\LP^p(G)$, where $G$ is a homogeneous Lie group. Our results apply to the setting where the underlying group is the Heisenberg group and the rotations are symplectic automorphisms. They also apply to operators that arise from some hydrodynamical problem involving rotations.

The photoproduction of pi0pi0 and pi0pi+/- pairs off 40Ca has been investigated with the TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. Data have been taken for incident photon energies in the energy range from 200 - 820 MeV. Total cross sections have been extracted from threshold up to the maximum photon energy and invariant mass distributions of the pion pairs have been obtained for incident photon energies between 400 - 500 MeV and 500 - 550 MeV. The double pi0 invariant mass distributions show some relative enhancement with respect to the mixed charge channel at small invariant masses. The effects are smaller than previously observed for lead nuclei and the distributions do not significantly deviate from carbon data. The data are in good agreement with the results of recent calculations in the framework of the BUU model, with careful treatment of final state interaction effects but without an explicit in-medium modification of scalar, iso-scalar pion pairs. This means that for Ca most of the experimentally observed effect can be explained by final state interactions. Only at low incident photon energies there is still a small low mass enhancement of the double pi0 data over the BUU results.

Recent experimental results for meson photoproduction from nuclei obtained with TAPS at MAMI are analyzed in view of the suppression of the second nucleon resonance region in total photoabsorption. The cross sections can be split into a component from the low density surface region of nuclei and a component which scales more like the nuclear volume. The energy dependence of the surface component is similar to the deuteron cross section, it shows a clear signal for the second resonance peak assigned to the excitation of the P11(1440), D13(1520), and S11(1535). The volume component behaves differently, it is lacking the second resonance peak and shows an enhancement at intermediate photon energies.

Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead) has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion production from nuclei.

Differential cross sections of the reactions $(γ,π^\circπ^\circ)$ and $(γ,π^\circπ^++π^\circπ^-)$ have been measured for several nuclei ($^1$H,$^{12}$C, and $^{\rm nat}$Pb) at an incident-photon energy of $E_γ$=400-460 MeV at the tagged-photon facility at MAMI-B using the TAPS spectrometer. A significant nuclear-mass dependence of the $ππ$ invariant-mass distribution is found in the $π^\circπ^\circ$ channel. This dependence is not observed in the $π^\circπ^{+/-}$ channel and is consistent with an in-medium modification of the $ππ$ interaction in the $I$=$J$=0 channel. The data are compared to $π$-induced measurements and to calculations within a chiral-unitary approach.
