Abstract:
We provide lower bounds for the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operator $|σ\cdot p_A|^{2s} - C_s/|x|^{2s} + V$ in three dimensions, where $s\in (0, 1]$, covering the interesting physical cases $s = 1$ and $s = 1/2$. Here $σ$ is the vector of Pauli matrices, $p_A = p - A$, with $p = -i\nabla$ the three-dimensional momentum operator and $A$ a given magnetic vector potential, and $C_s$ is the…

Here $σ$ is the vector of Pauli matrices, $p_A = p - A$, with $p = -i\nabla$ the three-dimensional momentum operator and $A$ a given magnetic vector potential, and $C_s$ is the critical Hardy constant, that is, the optimal constant in the Hardy inequality $|p|^{2s} \geq C_s/|x|^{2s}$. If spin is neglected, results of this type are known in the literature as Hardy-Lieb-Thirring inequalities, which bound the sum of negative eigenvalues from below by $-M_s\int V_{-}^{1 + 3/(2s)}$, for a positive constant $M_s$. The inclusion of magnetic fields in this case follows from the non-magnetic case by diamagnetism. The addition of spin, however, offers extra challenges that make the result more elusive. It is the purpose of this article to resolve this problem by providing simple bounds for the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operator in question. In particular, for $1/2 \leq s \leq 1$ we are able to express the bound purely in terms of the magnetic field energy $\|B\|_2^2$ and integrals of powers of the negative part of $V$.

Absence of Binding in the Nelson and Piezoelectric Polaron Models
Authors:

Abstract:
In the context of the massless Nelson model, we prove that two non-relativistic nucleons interacting with a massless meson field do not bind when a sufficiently strong Coulomb repulsion between the nucleons is added to the Hamiltonian. The result holds for both the renormalized and unrenormalized theories, and can also be applied to the so-called piezoelectric polaron model, which describes an ele…

In the context of the massless Nelson model, we prove that two non-relativistic nucleons interacting with a massless meson field do not bind when a sufficiently strong Coulomb repulsion between the nucleons is added to the Hamiltonian. The result holds for both the renormalized and unrenormalized theories, and can also be applied to the so-called piezoelectric polaron model, which describes an electron interacting with the acoustical vibrational modes of a crystal through the piezoelectric interaction. The result can then be interpreted as well as a no-binding statement about piezoelectric bipolarons. The methods used allow also for a significant reduction of about 30% over previously known no-binding conditions for the optical bipolaron model of H. Fröhlich.

A Lower Bound on the Renormalized Nelson Model
Authors:
Gonzalo A. Bley
Abstract:
We provide explicit lower bounds for the ground-state energy of the renormalized Nelson model in terms of the coupling constant $α$ and the number of particles $N$, uniform in the meson mass and valid even in the massless case. In particular, for any number of particles $N$ and large enough $α$ we provide a bound of the form $-Cα^2 N^3\log^2(αN)$, where $C$ is an explicit positive numerical consta…

We provide explicit lower bounds for the ground-state energy of the renormalized Nelson model in terms of the coupling constant $α$ and the number of particles $N$, uniform in the meson mass and valid even in the massless case. In particular, for any number of particles $N$ and large enough $α$ we provide a bound of the form $-Cα^2 N^3\log^2(αN)$, where $C$ is an explicit positive numerical constant; and if $α$ is sufficiently small, we give one of the form $-Cα^2 N^3\log^2 N$ for $N \geq 2$, and $-Cα^2$ for $N = 1$. Whereas it is known that the renormalized Hamiltonian of the Nelson model is bounded below (as realized by E. Nelson) and implicit lower bounds have been given elsewhere (as in a recent work by Gubinelli, Hiroshima, and Lörinczi), ours seem to be the first fully explicit lower bounds with a reasonable dependence on $α$ and $N$. We emphasize that the logarithmic term in the bounds above is probably an artifact in our calculations, since one would expect that the ground-state energy should behave as $-Cα^2 N^3$ for large $N$ or $α$, as in the polaron model of H. Fröhlich.

Abstract:
We provide a unified method for obtaining upper bounds for certain functional integrals appearing in quantum mechanics and non-relativistic quantum field theory, functionals of the form $E\left[\exp(A_T)\right]$, the (effective) action $A_T$ being a function of particle trajectories up to time $T$. The estimates in turn yield rigorous lower bounds for ground state energies, via the Feynman-Kac formula. The upper bounds are obtained by writing the action for these functional integrals in terms of stochastic integrals. The method is first illustrated in familiar quantum mechanical settings: for the hydrogen atom, for a Schrödinger operator with $1/|x|^2$ potential with small coupling, and, with a modest adaptation of the method, for the harmonic oscillator. We then present our principal applications of the method, in the settings of non-relativistic quantum field theories for particles moving in a quantized Bose field, including the optical polaron and Nelson models.
