Measurement of the topological Chern number by continuous probing of a qubit subject to a slowly varying Hamiltonian
Abstract: We analyze a measurement scheme that allows determination of the Berry curvature and the topological Chern number of a Hamiltonian with parameters exploring a two-dimensional closed manifold. Our method uses continuous monitoring of the gradient of the Hamiltonian with respect to one parameter during a quasi-adiabatic quench of the other. Measurement back-action leads to disturbance of the system… ▽ More

Macroscopic realism of quantum work fluctuations
Abstract: We study the fluctuations of the work performed on a driven quantum system, defined as the difference between subsequent measurements of energy eigenvalues. These work fluctuations are governed by statistical theorems with similar expressions in classical and quantum physics. In this article we show that we can distinguish quantum and classical work fluctuations, as the latter can be described by… ▽ More

Conditioned quantum motion of an atom in a continuously monitored 1D lattice
Abstract: We consider a quantum particle on a one dimensional lattice subject to weak local measurements and study its stochastic dynamics conditioned on the measurement outcomes. Depending on the measurement strength our analysis of the quantum trajectories reveals dynamical regimes reach- ing from quasi-coherent wave packet oscillations to a Zeno-type dynamics. We analyse how these dynamical regimes are d… ▽ More

Landau-Zener interference at bichromatic driving
Abstract: We investigate experimentally and theoretically the interference at avoided crossings which are repeatedly traversed as a consequence of an applied ac field. Our model system is a charge qubit in a serial double quantum dot connected to two leads. Our focus lies on effects caused by simultaneous driving with two different frequencies. We work out how the commensurability of the driving frequencies… ▽ More

Qubit interference at avoided crossings: The role of driving shape and bath coupling
Abstract: We derive the structure of the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interference pattern for a qubit that experiences quantum dissipation and is additionally subjected to time-periodic but otherwise general driving. A spin-boson Hamiltonian serves as model which we treat with a Bloch-Redfield master equation in Floquet basis. It predicts a peak structure that depends sensitively on the operato… ▽ More

Coherent backscattering of intense light by cold atoms with degenerate energy levels: Diagrammatic treatment
Abstract: We present a generalization of the diagrammatic pump-probe approach to coherent backscattering (CBS) of intense laser light for atoms with degenerate energy levels. We employ this approach for a characterization of the double scattering signal from optically pumped atoms with the transition $J_g\rightarrow J_e=J_g+1$ in the helicity preserving polarization channel. We show that, in the saturation… ▽ More

Entanglement creation in a quantum dot-nanocavity system
Abstract: We explore the possibility to entangle an excitonic two-level system in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) with a cavity defined on a photonic crystal by swee** the cavity frequency across its resonance with the exciton transition. The dynamic cavity detuning is established by a radio frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW). It induces Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions between the excitonic and the phot… ▽ More

Employing Circuit QED to Measure Nonequilibrium Work Fluctuations
Abstract: We study an interferometric method for the measurement of the statistics of work performed on a driven quantum system, which has been put forward recently [Dorner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 230601 (2013), Mazzola et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 230602 (2013)]. The method allows replacing two projective measurements of the energy of the driven system with qubit tomography of an ancilla that is appro… ▽ More

Negativity and quantum discord in Davies environments
Abstract: We investigate the time evolution of negativity and quantum discord for a pair of non-interacting qubits with one being weakly coupled to a decohering Davies--type Markovian environment. At initial time of preparation, the qubits are prepared in one of the maximally entangled pure Bell states. In the limiting case of pure decoherence (i.e. pure dephasing), both, the quantum discord and negativity… ▽ More
