Ferroelectric materials offer unprecedented ultrafast responses and are of great interest for the development of new polarizable media under the influence of an electromagnetic field. Recent research efforts have demonstrated the role of optical excitation and intense terahertz (THz) pulses in inducing a polar order and revealing a hidden phase transition in SrTiO3 (STO), respectively. Here we show that the surface of STO crystals at room temperature act as ultrafast sensors that enable sub-picosecond switching through the Kerr effect and multi-ps recording of polar THz intensity with spatial resolution below the diffraction limit through dipole alignment relaxation. The contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution achieved by in the STO sensor are significantly superior to those of present-day near-field THz sensors based on the linear Pockels effect, and more importantly, its ability to remain polarized for several picoseconds opens the door to a new strategy for building an ultrafast space-time THz memory.

Key points of this demonstration include the use of a pump pulse duration of 280 fs in combination with an echelon mirror. Our results present unmatched combined characteristics and are highly competitive with the existing THz sources pumped at the mJ range. This demonstration is a step towards the democratization of access to intense and powerful THz pulses.

The nature of light-matter interaction is governed by the spatial-temporal structures of a light field and material wavefunctions. The emergence of the light beam with transverse phase vortex, or equivalently orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been providing intriguing possibilities to induce unconventional optical transitions beyond the framework of the electric dipole interaction. The uniqueness stems from the OAM transfer from light to material, as demonstrated using the bound electron of a single trapped ion. However, many aspects of the vortex light-matter interaction are still unexplored especially in solids with extended electronic states. Here, we unambiguously visualized dipole-forbidden multipolar excitations in a solid-state electron system; spoof localized surface plasmon, selectively induced by the terahertz vortex beam. The results obey the selection rules governed by the conservation of the total angular momentum, which is numerically confirmed by the electromagnetic field analysis. Our results show light's OAM can be efficiently transferred to an elementary excitation in solids.

Abstract:
We show that in a topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ of positive entropy there exist proper (positively) asymptotic pairs, that is, pairs $(x,y)$ such that $x\not= y$ and $\lim_{n\to +\infty} d(T^n x,T^n y)=0$. More precisely we consider a $T$-ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy and prove that the set of points that belong to a proper asymptotic pair is of measure $1$. When $T$ is invertible…

More precisely we consider a $T$-ergodic measure $μ$ of positive entropy and prove that the set of points that belong to a proper asymptotic pair is of measure $1$. When $T$ is invertible, the stable classes (i.e., the equivalence classes for the asymptotic equivalence) are not stable under $T^{-1}$: for $μ$-almost every $x$ there are uncountably many $y$ that are asymptotic with $x$ and such that $(x,y)$ is a Li-Yorke pair with respect to $T^{-1}$. We also show that asymptotic pairs are dense in the set of topological entropy pairs.

We study the Fermi energy level dependence of nonlinear terahertz (THz) transmission of gated multi-layer and single-layer graphene transferred onto sapphire and quartz substrates. The two samples represent two limits of low-field impurity scattering: short-range neutral and long-range charged impurity scattering, respectively. We observe an increase in the transmission as the field amplitude is increased due to intraband absorption bleaching starting at fields above 8 kV/cm. This effect arises from a field-induced reduction in THz conductivity that depends strongly on the Fermi energy. We account for intraband absorption using a free carrier Drude model that includes neutral and charged impurity scattering as well as optical phonon scattering. We find that although the Fermi-level dependence in the monolayer and five-layer samples is quite different, both exhibit a strong dependence on the field amplitude that cannot be explained on the basis of an increase in the lattice temperature alone. Our results provide a deeper understanding of transport in graphene devices operating at THz frequencies and in modest kV/cm field strengths where nonlinearities exist.

This paper addresses the problem of extracting representative elements from a relational dataset. After defining the notion of degree of representativeness, computed using the Borda aggregation procedure, we present the extraction of exemplars which are the representative elements of the dataset. We use these concepts to build a network on the dataset. We expose the main properties of these notions and we propose two typical applications of our framework. The first application consists in resuming and structuring a set of binary images and the second in mining co-authoring relation in a research team.

We introduce the entropy rate of multidimensional cellular automata. This number is invariant under shift-commuting isomorphisms; as opposed to the entropy of such CA, it is always finite. The invariance property and the finiteness of the entropy rate result from basic results about the entropy of partitions of multidimensional cellular automata. We prove several results that show that entropy rate of 2-dimensional automata preserve similar properties of the entropy of one dimensional cellular automata.
In particular we establish an inequality which involves the entropy rate, the radius of the cellular automaton and the entropy of the d-dimensional shift. We also compute the entropy rate of permutative bi-dimensional cellular automata and show that the finite value of the entropy rate (like the standard entropy of for one-dimensional CA) depends on the number of permutative sites.
Finally we define the topological entropy rate and prove that it is an invariant for topological shift-commuting conjugacy and establish some relations between topological and measure-theoretic entropy rates.

The terahertz electric field efficiently drives the carriers, inducing large transparency in the near-infrared region. Theoretical calculations using the Boltzmann transport equation quantitatively reproduce the experimental findings. This good agreement suggests that the intense terahertz field should promote remarkable impact ioniza- tion process, which leads to suppression of optical phonon emission and results in efficient carrier transport in graphene.

Terahertz (THz) waves have been significantly developed in the last fifteen years because of their great potential for applications in industrial and scientific communities1,2. The unique properties of THz waves as transparency for numerous materials and strong absorption for water-based materials are expected to broadly impact biosensing3 such as medical imaging4, chemical identifications5, and DNA recognition6. In particular, for accessing information within a scale comparable to the cell size where interactions between cell membrane and other organelle structures occur, micron size spatial resolution is required. Due to the large wavelength, however, the joint capability of THz near-field imaging with real-time acquisition, which is a highly desirable ability for observing real-time changes of in vivo sample, remains undone. Here, we report a real-time THz near-field microscope with a high dynamic range that can capture images of a 370 x 740 μm2 area at 35 frames per second. We achieve high spatial resolution on a large area by combining two novel techniques: THz pulse generation by tilted-pulse-front excitation7 and electro-optic (EO) balanced imaging detection using a thin crystal. To demonstrate the microscope capability, we reveal the field enhancement at the gap position of a dipole antenna after the irradiation of a THz pulse. Our results are the first demonstration of a direct quantification of a 2-dimensional subwavelength THz electric field taken in real-time.

Abstract:
The anisotropic effective mass of electrons is directly measured using time-resolved THz- pump/THz-probe techniques in a n-doped InGaAs semiconductor thin film. A microscopic theory is used to attribute this anisotropy in the THz probe transmission to the nonparabolicity of the conduction band. Self-consistent light-matter coupling is shown to contribute significantly to the THz response.

In this paper we provide examples of topological dynamical systems having either finite or countable scrambled sets. In particular we study conditions for the existence of Li-Yorke, asymptotic and distal pairs in constant--length substitution dynamical systems. Starting from a circle rotation we also construct a dynamical system having Li--Yorke pairs, none of which is recurrent.
