A soliton ensemble is a particular kind of approximation of the solution of an initial-value problem for an integrable equation by a reflectionless potential that is well adapted to singular asymptotics like the small-dispersion limit. We show how soliton ensembles for the Benjamin-Ono equation can be analyzed in this limit via the construction of local approximations that capture highly oscillatory features of the solution and hence provide more information than weak convergence results that are easier to obtain. These local approximations are deduced from the distributions of eigenvalues of two related matrices, one Hermitian and another non-Hermitian. We perform careful numerical experiments to deduce the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of these matrices in the small-dispersion limit, and formulate conjectures reflecting our observations. Then we apply the conjectures to construct the local approximations of slowly varying profiles and rapidly oscillating profiles as well. We show that the latter profiles are consistent with the predictions of Whitham modulation theory as originally developed for the Benjamin-Ono equation by Dobrokhotov and Krichever.

We consider Toeplitz determinants whose symbol has: (i) a one-cut regular potential $V$, (ii) Fisher--Hartwig singularities, and (iii) a smooth function in the background. The potential $V$ is associated with an equilibrium measure that is assumed to be supported on the whole unit circle. For constant potentials $V$, the equilibrium measure is the uniform measure on the unit circle and our formulas reduce to well-known results for Toeplitz determinants with Fisher--Hartwig singularities. For non-constant $V$, our results appear to be new even in the case of no Fisher--Hartwig singularities. As applications of our results, we derive various statistical properties of a determinantal point process which generalizes the circular unitary ensemble.

In this paper we study the small-$λ$ spectral asymptotics of an integral operator $\mathscr{K}$ defined on two multi-intervals $J$ and $E$, when the multi-intervals touch each other (but their interiors are disjoint). The operator $\mathscr{K}$ is closely related to the multi-interval Finite Hilbert Transform (FHT). This case can be viewed as a singular limit of self-adjoint Hilbert-Schmidt integral operators with so-called integrable kernels, where the limiting operator is still bounded, but has a continuous spectral component. The regular case when $\text{dist}(J,E)>0$, and $\mathscr{K}$ is of the Hilbert-Schmidt class, was studied in an earlier paper by the authors. The main assumption in this paper is that $U=J\cup E$ is a single interval. We show that the eigenvalues of $\mathscr{K}$, if they exist, do not accumulate at $λ=0$. Combined with the results in an earlier paper by the authors, this implies that $H_p$, the subspace of discontinuity (the span of all eigenfunctions) of $\mathscr{K}$, is finite dimensional and consists of functions that are smooth in the interiors of $J$ and $E$. We also obtain an approximation to the kernel of the unitary transformation that diagonalizes $\mathscr{K}$, and obtain a precise estimate of the exponential instability of inverting $\mathscr{K}$. Our work is based on the method of Riemann-Hilbert problem and the nonlinear steepest-descent method of Deift and Zhou.

Abstract:
The Bessel process models the local eigenvalue statistics near $0$ of certain large positive definite matrices. In this work, we consider the probability \begin{align*} \mathbb{P}\Big( \mbox{there are no points in the Bessel process on } (0,x_{1})\cup(x_{2},x_{3})\cup\cdots\cup(x_{2g},x_{2g+1}) \Big), \end{align*} where $0<x_{1}<\cdots<x_{2g+1}$ and $g \geq 0$ is any non-negative integer. We obtain asymptotics for this probability as the size of the intervals becomes large, up to and including the oscillations of order $1$. In these asymptotics, the most intricate term is a one-dimensional integral along a linear flow on a $g$-dimensional torus, whose integrand involves ratios of Riemann $θ$-functions associated to a genus $g$ Riemann surface. We simplify this integral in two generic cases: (a) If the flow is ergodic, we compute the leading term in the asymptotics of this integral explicitly using Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. (b) If the linear flow has certain "good Diophantine properties", we obtain improved estimates on the error term in the asymptotics of this integral. In the case when the flow is both ergodic and has "good Diophantine properties" (which is always the case for $g=1$, and "almost always" the case for $g \geq 2$), these results can be combined, yielding particularly precise and explicit large gap asymptotics.

These operators arise when one studies the interior problem of tomography. The diagonalization of $\mathcal{H}_R,\mathcal{H}_L$ has been previously obtained, but only asymptotically when $b_L\neq-b_R$. We implement a novel approach based on the method of matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHP) which diagonalizes $\mathcal{H}_R,\mathcal{H}_L$ explicitly. We also find the asymptotics of the solution to a related RHP and obtain error estimates.

The Daniell Integral
Authors:

Abstract:
The basic properties of the Daniell integral are presented. We do not use the standard approach of introducing auxiliary spaces of the "over-functions" and "under-functions." Instead, we use a simple and direct approach based on approximating integrable functions by absolutely convergent series of simple functions.

We introduce random survival forests, a random forests method for the analysis of right-censored survival data. New survival splitting rules for growing survival trees are introduced, as is a new missing data algorithm for imputing missing data. A conservation-of-events principle for survival forests is introduced and used to define ensemble mortality, a simple interpretable measure of mortality that can be used as a predicted outcome. Several illustrative examples are given, including a case study of the prognostic implications of body mass for individuals with coronary artery disease. Computations for all examples were implemented using the freely available R-software package, randomSurvivalForest.
