The last decade witnessed an increasing interest in axions and axion-like particles with many theoretical works published and many new experimental proposals that started a real race towards their discovery. This paper is the Conceptual Design Report of the KLASH (KLoe magnet for Axion SearcH) experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF). The idea of this experiment has been stimulated by the availability of the large volume superconducting magnet, with a moderate magnetic field of 0.6 T, used in the KLOE detector at the DAFNE collider. The main conclusion we draw from this report is the possibility to build and put in operation at LNF in 2-3 years a large haloscope with the sensitivity to KSVZ axions in the low mass range between 0.2 and 1 $μ$eV, complementary to that of other experiments. Timeline and cost are competitive with respect to other proposals in the same mass region thanks to the availability of most of the infrastructure, in particular the superconducting magnet and the cryogenics plant.

The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of two leptonic Higgs doublets, can reduce the number of independent high-energy parameters of type-I seesaw to the minimum number compatible with non-vanishing neutrino mixings and CP violation. These symmetries are broken above the scale where the effective operator is generated and can thus remain covert, in the sense that no explicit evidence of the symmetry can be read off the neutrino mass matrix, and different symmetries can give rise to the same low-energy structure. We find that only two cases are viable: one yields a structure with two zero-textures already considered in the literature, the other has no zero-textures and has never been considered before. It predicts normal ordering, a lightest neutrino mass $ \sim 10$ meV, a Dirac phase $δ\sim \frac{3π}{2}$ and definite values for the Majorana phases.

The strongest upper bounds on the axion mass come from astrophysical observations like the neutrino burst duration of SN1987A, which depends on the axion couplings to nucleons, or the white-dwarf cooling rates and red-giant evolution, which involve the axion-electron coupling. It has been recently argued that in variants of DFSZ models with generation-dependent Peccei-Quinn charges an approximate axion-nucleon decoupling can occur, strongly relaxing the SN1987A bound. However, as in standard DFSZ models, the axion remains in general coupled to electrons, unless an ad hoc cancellation is engineered. Here we show that axion-electron decoupling can be implemented without extra tunings in DFSZ-like models with three Higgs doublets. Remarkably, the numerical value of the quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d\sim 1/2$ is crucial to open up this possibility.

We investigate the possibility of viable leptogenesis in an appealing $Δ(27)$ model with a universal texture zero in the (1,1) entry. The model accommodates the mass spectrum, mixing and CP phases for both quarks and leptons and allows for grand unification. Flavoured Boltzmann equations for the lepton asymmetries are solved numerically, taking into account both $N_1$ and $N_2$ right-handed neutrino decays. The $N_1$-dominated scenario is successful and the most natural option for the model, with $M_1 \in [10^9, 10^{12}]$ GeV, and $M_1/M_2 \in [0.002, 0.1]$, which constrains the parameter space of the underlying model and yields lower bounds on the respective Yukawa couplings. Viable leptogenesis is also possible in the $N_2$-dominated scenario, with the asymmetry in the electron flavour protected from $N_1$ washout by the texture zero. However, this occurs in a region of parameter space which has a stronger mass hierarchy $M_1/M_2 < 0.002 $, and $M_2$ relatively close to $M_3$, which is not a natural expectation of the $Δ(27)$ model.

We investigate to what extent a generic, generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetry acting on the quark Yukawa operators can reduce the number of free parameters by forcing some entries in the Yukawa matrices to vanish. The maximal reduction compatible with CP violation yields nine real parameters and one phase, which matches the number of physical observables, implying that such models have no free parameters. We derive a set of results: (i) the only possible structures have the form $M_4 \oplus M_5$, where the subscripts indicate the number of real parameters in the Yukawa matrices, (ii) there are only two inequivalent Yukawa structures, each one giving rise to six different models depending on quark flavour assignments, (iii) the $U(1)$ symmetries that generate these textures all have a QCD anomaly, and hence are Peccei-Quinn symmetries, reinforcing the idea of a possible connection between the quark flavour puzzle and the axion solution to the strong CP problem, (iv) in some cases the contributions to the QCD anomaly of two generations cancels out, and this opens the possibility that the axion coupling to nucleons could be strongly suppressed. Flavour-violating axion couplings to quarks are completely fixed, up to the axion decay constant, providing a non-trivial complementarity between low-energy flavour-violating processes and standard axion searches.

We present a comprehensive discussion of the phenomenology of flavourful axions, including both standard Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axions, associated with the solution to the strong $CP$ problem, and non-standard axion-like particles (ALPs). We give the flavourful axion-fermion and axion-photon couplings and calculate the branching ratios of heavy meson ($K$, $D$, $B$) decays involving a flavourful axion. We also calculate the mixing between axions and heavy mesons $ K^0 $, $ D^0 $, $ B^0 $ and $ B_s^0 $, which affects the meson oscillation probability and mass difference. Mixing also contributes to meson decays into axions and axion decays into two photons, and may be relevant for ALPs. We discuss charged lepton flavour-violating decays involving final state axions of the form $\ell_1 \to \ell_2 a (γ) $, as well as $ μ\to eee $ and $ μ-e $ conversion. Finally we describe the phenomenology of a particular "A to Z" Pati-Salam model, in which PQ symmetry arises accidentally due to discrete flavour symmetry. Here all axion couplings are fixed by a fit to flavour data, leading to sharp predictions and correlations between flavour-dependent observables.

Imposing only these discrete flavour symmetries, the axion solution to the strong $ CP $ problem is protected from PQ-breaking operators to the required degree. A QCD axion arises from a linear combination of $ A_4 $ triplet flavons, which are also responsible for fermion flavour structures due to their vacuum alignments. We find that the requirement of an accidental PQ symmetry arising from a discrete flavour symmetry constrains the form of the Yukawa matrices, providing a link between flavour and the strong $ CP $ problem. Our model predicts specific flavour-violating couplings of the flavourful axion and thus puts a strong limit on the axion scale from kaon decays.

We propose a natural $ S_4 \times SO(10) $ supersymmetric grand unified theory of flavour with an auxiliary $\mathbb{Z}_4^2 \times \mathbb{Z}_4^R$ symmetry, based on small Higgs representations (nothing larger than an adjoint) and hence a type-I seesaw mechanism. The Yukawa structure of all fermions is determined by the hierarchical vacuum expectation values of three $ S_4 $ triplet flavons, with CSD3 vacuum alignments, where up-type quarks and neutrinos couple to one Higgs $\mathbf{10}$, and the down-type quarks and charged leptons couple to a second Higgs $\mathbf{10}$. The Yukawa matrices are obtained from sums of low-rank matrices, where each matrix in the sum naturally accounts for the mass of a particular family, as in sequential dominance in the neutrino sector, which predicts a normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The model accurately fits all available quark and lepton data, with predictions for the leptonic $CP$ phase in 95$\%$ credible intervals given by $ 281^\circ < δ^\ell < 308^\circ $ and $ 225^\circ < δ^\ell < 253^\circ $. The model reduces to the MSSM, with the two Higgs doublets emerging from the two Higgs $\mathbf{10}$s without mixing, and we demonstrate how a $μ$ term of $\mathcal{O}$(TeV) can be realised, as well as doublet-triplet splitting, with Planck scale operators controlled by symmetry, leading to acceptable proton decay.

Although $SO(10)$ Supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unification Theories (GUTs) are very attractive for neutrino mass and mixing, it is often quite difficult to achieve successful leptogenesis from the lightest right-handed neutrino $N_1$ due to the strong relations between neutrino and up-type quark Yukawa couplings. We show that in a realistic model these constraints are relaxed, making $N_1$ leptogenesis viable. To illustrate this, we calculate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe $ Y_B $ from flavoured $ N_1 $ leptogenesis in a recently proposed $ Δ(27) \times SO(10) $ SUSY GUT. The flavoured Boltzmann equations are solved numerically, and comparison with the observed $ Y_B $ places constraints on the allowed values of right-handed neutrino masses and neutrino Yukawa couplings. The flavoured $SO(10)$ SUSY GUT is not only fairly complete and predictive in the lepton sector, but can also explain the BAU through leptogenesis with natural values in the lepton sector albeit with some tuning in the quark sector.

We discuss resonant leptogenesis arising from the decays of two nearly-degenerate right-handed neutrinos, identified as the inflaton and stabiliser superfields in a model of chaotic sneutrino inflation. We compare an analytical estimate of the baryon asymmetry $ η_B $ in the Boltzmann approximation to a numerical solution of the full density matrix equations, and find that the analytical result fails to capture the correct physics in certain regions of parameter space. The observed baryon asymmetry can be realised for a breaking of the mass degeneracy as small as $ \mathcal{O}(10^{-8}) $. The origin of such a small mass splitting is explained by considering supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in supergravity, which requires a constant in the superpotential of the order of the gravitino mass $ m_{3/2} $ to cancel the cosmological constant. This yields additional terms in the (s)neutrino mass matrices, lifting the degeneracy and linking $ η_B $ to the SUSY breaking scale. We find that achieving the correct baryon asymmetry requires a gravitino mass $ m_{3/2} \geq \mathcal{O}(100) $ TeV.

The symmetries, including $Δ(27)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{9} \times \mathbb{Z}_{12} \times \mathbb{Z}_{4}^{R}$, are broken close to the GUT breaking scale to yield the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with the standard R-parity. $SO(10)$ is broken via $SU(5)$ with doublet-triplet splitting achieved by a version of the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (missing VEV) mechanism. Constrained sequential dominance (CSD) is a natural framework for implementing the see-saw mechanism of neutrino masses which allows the mixing angles and phases to be accurately predicted in terms of relatively few input parameters. We analyze a class of CSD($n$) models where, in the flavour basis, two right-handed neutrinos are dominantly responsible for the "atmospheric" and "solar" neutrino masses with Yukawa couplings to $(ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)$ proportional to $(0,1,1)$ and $(1,n,n-2)$, respectively, where $n$ is a positive integer. These coupling patterns may arise in indirect family symmetry models based on $A_4$. With two right-handed neutrinos, using a $χ^2$ test, we find a good agreement with data for CSD(3) and CSD(4) where the entire PMNS mixing matrix is controlled by a single phase $η$, which takes simple values, leading to accurate predictions for mixing angles and the magnitude of the oscillation phase $|δ_{CP}|$. We carefully study the perturbing effect of a third "decoupled" right-handed neutrino, leading to a bound on the lightest physical neutrino mass $m_1 \lesssim 1$ meV for the viable cases, corresponding to a normal neutrino mass hierarchy. We also discuss a direct link between the oscillation phase $δ_{CP} $ and leptogenesis in CSD($n$) due to the same see-saw phase $η$ appearing in both the neutrino mass matrix and leptogenesis.
