Here, we present a review of the phenomenology of the spontaneous exchange bias effect, a phenomenon in which some materials exhibit unidirectional magnetic anisotropy even without the assistance of an external magnetic field applied during its cooling process. We review and discuss the most critical advances in this field of research that flourished more than a decade ago, pointing out its main features as well as its similarities and dissimilarities with the conventional exchange bias effect that has been vastly investigated since the 1950 decade. Finally, we briefly overview the obstacles to advancement in the field and discuss what we believe could be promising roads to overcome them.

Here, we present a study of the influence of microstructure on the magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of the La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 double perovskite, with primary attention to the spontaneous exchange bias effect, a fascinating recently discovered phenomena for which some materials exhibit unidirectional magnetic anisotropy after being cooled in zero magnetic fields. By sintering La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 at different temperatures, we obtained samples with distinct average grain sizes, ranging from 1.54 to 6.65 mu_m. A detailed investigation of the material's structural, morphologic, electronic, and magnetic properties using X-ray powder diffraction, powder neutron diffraction, X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and AC and DC magnetometry has revealed a systematic enhancement of the exchange bias effect with increasing the average grain size. This evolution is discussed in terms of changes in the material's porosity and grain morphology and its influence on the exchange couplings at the magnetic interfaces.

The highly insulating character of LaCaCoIrO$_6$ and its positive magnetoresistance further suggest that this antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction occurs through an indirect hybridization between the Co $e_g$ orbitals

Here we present a detailed investigation of the Co and Ir local electronic structures in La1.5A0.5CoIrO6 (A = Ba, Ca) compounds in order to unravel the orbital hybridization mechanism in these CoIr-based double perovskites. Our results of x-ray powder diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, Co and Ir L2,3-edges and Co K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism suggest a competition between magnetic interactions. A dominant antiferromagnetic coupling is found to be responsible for the ferrimagnetic behavior observed for A = Ca below approximately 96 K, the competing magnetic phases and the cationic disorder in this compound giving rise to a spin-glass state at low temperatures. For the A = Ba, on the other hand, there is no evidence of long range order down to its spin-glass transition temperature. The remarkably different magnetic properties observed between these two compounds is discussed in terms of the structural distortion that alters the strength of the Co - Ir couplings, with a relevant role played by the Co 3d eg - Ir 5d j = 1/2 hybridization.

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of La2-xBaxCoMnO6 (0.25 =< x =< 1.0) compounds were investigated employing x-ray powder diffraction and magnetometry. The crystal structure evolves from orthorhombic Pnma to rhombohedral R-3c and then to hexagonal P63/mmc space group as the Ba concentration increases. The magnetization as a function of temperature measurements revealed a ferromagnetic-like behavior for all samples, but antiferromagnetic interactions seem to also be present throughout the whole series. The competition between magnetic phases leads to the phenomenon of spontaneous exchange bias effect, observed in the zero field cooled magnetization as a function of applied magnetic field curves. The evolution of this effect along the series is discussed in terms of changes in the crystal structure.

Co and Ir are most likely in bivalent and tetravalent oxidation states, respectively, while Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that Fe is in a trivalent state. The ac and dc magnetization data suggest a ferrimagnetic behavior resulting from the presence of two antiferromagnetic sublattices at Co/Fe and Ir sites. The large coercive field H_C $\simeq$ 32 kOe observed at 10 K, comparable to that of other double perovskites of interest for hard magnets, is discussed in terms of the structural distortion and the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the transition metal ions.

Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of polycrystalline La2-xCaxCoMnO6 (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.75) compounds are investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetometry. All the samples have an orthorhombic structure and show a slight decrease in the unit cell with Ca-do**. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal a complex magnetic behavior with two ferromagnetic transitions. These transitions are ascribed to Co2+--Mn4+ and Co3+--Mn3+ couplings and suggest the presence of additional antiferromagnetic couplings in these disordered compounds. Field-dependent magnetization curves, measured after cooling the samples in a zero external magnetic field, reveal the spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect for the Ca-doped samples. The strengthening of the uncompensated magnetic coupling at the interfaces, caused by the increased antiferromagnetic phase, explains the increase of SEB with increasing the Ca-content.

Vibrational and elastic properties of the $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ skutterudites are investigated by, respectively, temperature $(T)$ dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and pressure $(P)$ dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The Fe $K$-edge EXAFS experiments of the $R=$ K, Ca and Ba materials were performed in the $T$-interval $6<T<300$ K and XRD experiments of the $R=$ Na, K, Ca, Sr and Ba materials were performed in the $P$-interval $1\text{ atm }<P<16$ GPa. From EXAFS, we obtained the correlated Debye-Waller parameters that were thus analyzed to extract effective spring constants connected with the Fe-$Y$ (where $Y=$ either $R$, Fe or Sb) scattering paths. Our findings suggest that in the case of the light cations, $R=$ K or Ca, the $R$ atoms are relatively weakly coupled to the cage, in a scenario reminiscent to the Einstein oscillators. From the XRD experiments, we obtained the bulk modulus $B_{0}$ for all $R=$Na, K, Ca, Sr and Ba materials, with values ranging from $77$ GPa ($R=$ K) to $R=99$ GPa ($R=$ Ba) as well as the compressibility $β$ as a function of $P$. The trend in $β$ as a function of the $R$ filler is discussed and it is shown that it does not correlate with simple geometrical considerations but rather with the filler-cage bonding properties.

In this work we synthesize La2CoMnO6, La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6, and La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 single crystals by the floating zone method and study their magnetic behavior. The three materials are ferromagnetic. Surprisingly, we observe no zero or even conventional exchange bias effect for the Ca and Sr doped single crystals, in sharp contrast to polycrystalline samples. This absence indicates that the lack of grain boundaries and spin glass-like behavior, not observed in our samples, might be key ingredients for the spontaneous exchange bias phenomena seen in polycrystalline samples.

The spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect is a remarkable phenomenon recently observed in some reentrant spin-glass materials. Here we investigate the SEB in La$_{1.5}$(Sr$_{0.5-x}$Ba$_{x}$)CoMnO$_{6}$ double-perovskites, a system with multifarious magnetic phases for which a notable increase in the exchange bias field is observed for intermediate Sr/Ba concentrations. The Ba to Sr substitution leads to the enhancement of the crystal lattice, which is accompanied by the raise of both the effective magnetic moment ($μ_{eff}$) and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature that is observed below the ferromagnetic ordering. Such increases are likely related to the increased fraction of Co$^{3+}$ in the high spin configuration, leading to the enhancement of Co$^{3+}$--O--Mn$^{4+}$ AFM phase and to the reduction in the uncompensation of the AFM coupling between Co and Mn. The combined effect of the increased $μ_{eff}$ and AFM phase plausible explains the changes in the SEB effect.

The delicate balance between spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb repulsion and crystalline electric field interactions observed in Ir-based oxides is usually manifested as exotic magnetic behavior. Here we investigate the evolution of the exchange coupling between Co and Ir for partial La substitution by Ca in La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$. A great advantage of the use of Ca$^{2+}$ as replacement for La$^{3+}$ is the similarity of its ionic radii. Thus, the observed magnetic changes can more easily be associated to electronic variations. A thorough investigation of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$CoIrO$_6$ system was carried out by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR), AC and DC magnetization, XAS, XMCD, Raman spectroscopy, electrical resistivity and dielectric permittivity. Our XAS results show that up to 25% of Ca substitution at the La site results in the emergence of Co$^{3+}$, possibly in high spin state, while the introduction of larger amount of Ca leads to the increase of Ir valence. The competing magnetic interactions resulting from the mixed valences lead to a coexistence of a magnetically ordered and an emerging spin glass (SG) state for the doped samples. Our $μ$SR results indicate that for La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$ a nearly constant fraction of a paramagnetic (PM) phase persists down to low temperature, possibly related to the presence of a small amount of Ir$^{3+}$ and to the anti-site disorder at Co/Ir sites. For the doped compounds the PM phase freezes below 30 K, but there is still some dynamics associated with the SG. The dielectric data obtained for the parent compound and the one with 25% of Ca-do** indicate a possible magnetodielectric effect, which is discussed in terms of the electron hop** between the TM ions, the anti-site disorder and the distorted crystalline structure.

A detailed analysis of the CDW modulation superlattice peaks as function of temperature is performed for both systems as the CDW transition temperature T_CDW is suppressed to zero by an non-thermal control parameter. Our results indicate an interesting crossover of the classical thermal-driven CDW order parameter critical exponent from a three-dimensional universality class to a mean-field tendency, as T_CDW vanishes. Such behavior might be associated with presence of quantum fluctuations which influences the classical second-order phase transition, strongly suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) at T_CDW = 0. This also provides experimental evidence that the effective dimensionality exceeds its upper critical dimension due to a quantum phase transition.

We explore the evolution of the structural phase transition of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$, a model system to study the interplay between structural quantum criticality and superconductivity, by means of high-energy x-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures and low temperatures. Our results confirm a rapid suppression of the superlattice transition temperature $T^*$ against pressure, which extrapolates to zero at a critical pressure of $\approx 1.79(4)$ GPa. The temperature evolution of the superlattice Bragg peak in $\rm{Ca_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ reveals a drastic decrease of the intensity and an increase of the linewidth when $T \rightarrow 0$ K and $p \rightarrow p_c$. Such anomaly is likely associated to the emergence of quantum fluctuations that disrupt the formation of long-range superlattice modulation. The revisited temperature-pressure phase diagram of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ thus highlights the intertwined nature of the distinct order parameters present in this system and demonstrates some similarities between this family and the unconventional superconductors.

La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ stands out as presenting the largest ZEB reported so far, while for La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ the exchange bias field ($H_{EB}$) is one order of magnitude smaller. Here we show that La$_{1.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ also exhibits a pronounced shift of its magnetic hysteresis loop, with intermediate $H_{EB}$ value in respect to Ca- and Sr-doped samples. In order to figure out the microscopic mechanisms responsible for this phenomena, these compounds were investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, muon spin rotation and relaxation, AC and DC magnetization, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The parent compound La$_{2}$CoMnO$_{6}$ was also studied for comparison, as a reference of a non-ZEB material. Our results show that the Ba-, Ca- and Sr-doped samples present a small amount of phase segregation, and that the ZEB effect is strongly correlated to the system's structure. We also observed that mixed valence states Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$/Mn$^{3+}$ are already present at the La$_{2}$CoMnO$_{6}$ parent compound, and that Ba$^{2+}$/Ca$^{2+}$/Sr$^{2+}$ partial substitution at La$^{3+}$ site leads to a large increase of Co average valence, with a subtle augmentation of Mn formal valence. Estimates of the Co and Mn valences from the $L$-edge XAS indicate the presence of oxygen vacancies in all samples (0.05$\leq δ\leq$0.1). Our XMCD results show a great decrease of Co moment for the doped compounds, and indicate that the shift of the hysteresis curves for these samples is related to uncompensated antiferromagnetic coupling between Co and Mn.

In this paper, we report on the Fe $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of the itinerant magnets $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($R=$ Na, K, Ca, Sr, Ba), aiming at exploring the electronic and structural properties of the octahedral building block formed by Fe and the Sb ligands. We find evidence for strong hybridization between the Fe $3d$ and Sb $5p$ states at the Fermi level, giving experimental support to previous electronic structure calculations of the $R$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ skutterudites. The electronic states derived from Fe 3$d$ Sb $5p$ mixing are shown to be either more occupied and/or less localized in the cases of the magnetically ordered systems, for which $R=$ Na or K, connecting the local Fe electronic structure to the itinerant magnetic properties. Moreover, the analysis of the extended region of the XAS spectra (EXAFS) suggests that bond disorder may be a more relevant parameter to explain the suppression of the ferromagnetic ordered state in CaFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ than the decrease of the density of states.

By means of magnetization as a function of temperature measurements, carried under different applied pressures and/or magnetic fields, we have found that the freezing temperature of the SG phase exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease with increasing $P$, and that the maximum $P$ = 7.9 kbar was not sufficient to prevent the formation of the frozen state. Since the ordering temperatures of the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases are also affected by $P$, we discuss the results here found in terms of changes on the balance between the magnetic phases.

The zero-field-cooled exchange bias (ZEB) effect is a remarkable phenomenon recently reported for some reentrant spin glass-like compounds. In this work, the time-evolution of magnetization is thoroughly investigated for two ZEB materials in order to figure out the role played by the spin glass-like phase on such effect. La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ and La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ were chosen as representative samples of ZEB systems, since the former compound presents the largest ZEB reported so far, while the second has a much smaller effect, despite being structurally/chemically similar. Comprehensive magnetic measurements were carried on both samples, and the results are discussed in terms of the amount and time-evolution of the spin glass-like phase under the influence of a varying field. We also propose a phenomenological model, based on the pinning of spin glass-like moments and on the dynamics of their magnetic relaxation, to explain the asymmetry observed in the hysteresis loops. The good agreement between the simulated and experimental results confirms our hypothesis that the spin glass-like phase is key to the ZEB effect.

La3Co4Sn13 is a superconducting material with transition temperature at Tc = 2.70 K, which presents a superlattice structural transition at T* ~ 150 K, a common feature for this class of compounds. However, for this material, it is not clear that at T* the lattice distortions arise from a charge density wave (CDW) or from a distinct microscopic origin. Interestingly, it has been suggested in isostructural non-magnetic intermetallic compounds that T* can be suppressed to zero temperature, by combining chemical and external pressure, and a quantum critical point is argued to be observed near these critical do**/pressure. Our study shows that application of pressure on single-crystalline La3Co4Sn13 enhances Tc and decreases T*. We observe thermal hysteresis loops for cooling/heating cycles around T* for P > 0.6 GPa, in electrical resistivity measurements, which are not seen in x-ray diffraction data. The hysteresis in electrical measurements may be due to the pinning of the CDW phase to impurities/defects, while the superlattice structural transition maintains its ambient pressure second-order transition nature under pressure. From our experiments we estimate that T* vanishes at around 5.5 GPa, though no quantum critical behavior is observed up to 2.53 GPa.

A mean field approximation to simulate the macroscopic properties along the series has been used. Neutron diffraction data in powdered sample of nominal concentration Tb$_{0.6}$Y$_{0.4}$RhIn$_5$ reveal AFM propagation vector $k=[\frac{1}{2}~0~\frac{1}{2}]$ with the magnetic moments oriented close to the tetragonal \textit{c} axis. We discuss the role of combined effects of crystalline electric field (CEF) perturbations and dilution in the magnetic properties evolution with Y content. In particular, we suggest that changes in the Tb-In first neighbors distances, i.e. the TbIn$_3$ cuboctahedra distortion, are responsible for changes in the Tb crystalline potential and the possible reorientation of Tb magnetic moments for $x>$0.4. This reflects non negligible variations of the $B^{m}_{n}$ crystal field parameters and the energy levels splitting with \textit{x}.

In this work we report the synthesis and structural, electronic and magnetic properties of La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6 double-perovskite. This is a re-entrant spin cluster material which exhibits a non-negligible negative exchange bias effect when it is cooled in zero magnetic field from an unmagnetized state down to low temperature. X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetometry results indicate mixed valence state at Co site, leading to competing magnetic phases and uncompensated spins at the magnetic interfaces. We compare the results for this Ca-doped material with those reported for the resemblant compound La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6, and discuss the much smaller spontaneous exchange bias effect observed for the former in terms of its structural and magnetic particularities. For La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6, when successive magnetization loops are carried, the spontaneous exchange bias field inverts its sign from negative to positive from the first to the second measurement. We discuss this behavior based on the disorder at the magnetic interfaces, related to the presence of a glassy phase. This compound also exhibits a large conventional exchange bias, for which there is no sign inversion of the exchange bias field for consecutive cycles.

Whereas at $y=0.11$ even a sensitive magnetic microprobe such as $μ$SR does not detect magnetism, all other samples display weak ferromagnetism with a magnetic moment of up to 0.22 $μ_B$ per Fe atom. As a function of do** and of temperature a crossover from short range to long range magnetic order is observed, characterized by a broadly distributed spontaneous internal field. However, the $y=0.14$ and $y=0.17$ remain in the short range ordered state down to the lowest investigated temperature. The transition from short range to long range order appears to be accompanied by a change of the character of the spin fluctuations, which exhibit spin wave excitations signature in the LRO part of the phase diagram. Mössbauer spectroscopy for $y=0.27$ and 0.32 indicates that the internal field lies in the plane perpendicular to the crystallographic $c$ axis. The field distribution and its evolution with do** suggest that the details of the Fe magnetic moment formation and the consequent magnetic state are determined not only by the dopant concentration but also by the way the replacement of the Ga atoms surrounding the Fe is accomplished.

We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization, depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions.

In the vicinity of T_N -> 0 the system shows non-Fermi liquid behavior due to antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations. For a high Sn content, x > 2.2, intermediate valence effects are present. In this work we show that Gd3+-doped electron spin resonance (ESR) probes a change in the character of the Ce 4f electron, as a function of Sn substitution. The Gd3+ ESR results indicate a transition of the Ce 4f spin behavior from localized to itinerant. Near the quantum critical point, on the antiferromagnetic side of the magnetic phase diagram, both localized and itinerant behaviors coexist.

No appreciable alteration in shape or energy position of this edge was observed with Co substitution. This result provides experimental support to previous ab initio calculations in which the extra Co electron is concentrated at the substitute site and do not change the electronic occupation of the Fe ions. Superconductivity may emerge due to bonding modifications induced by the substitute atom that weakens the spin-density-wave ground state by reducing the Fe local moments and/or increasing the elastic energy penalty of the accompanying orthorhombic distortion.

The As-Fe bond length is found to be slightly reduced (<~ 0.01 Angstroms) by both Co and K substitutions, without any observable increment in the corresponding Debye Waller factor. Also, this bond is shown to be compressible (k = 3.3(3)x10^{-3} GPa^{-1}). The observed contractions of As-Fe bond under pressure and chemical substitutions are likely related with a reduction of the local Fe magnetic moments, and should be an important tuning parameter in the phase diagrams of the Fe-based superconductors.

In contrast to the simultaneous structural and magnetic first order phase transition $T_{0}$ previously reported, our detailed investigation on an underdoped Ba$_{0.84}$K$_{0.16}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal unambiguously revealed that the transitions are not concomitant. The tetragonal ($τ$: I4/mmm) - orthorhombic ($\vartheta$: Fmmm) structural transition occurs at $T_{S}\simeq$ 110 K, followed by an adjacent antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at $T_{N}\simeq$ 102 K. Hysteresis and coexistence of the $τ$ and $\vartheta$ phases over a finite temperature range observed in our NMR experiments confirm the first order character of the structural transition and provide evidence that both $T_{S}$ and $T_{N}$ are strongly correlated. Our data also show that superconductivity (SC) develops in the $\vartheta$ phase below $T_{c}$ = 20 K and coexists with long range AFM. This new observation, $T_{S}\neq T_{N}$, firmly establishes another similarity between the hole-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ via K substitution and the electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductors.

We have investigated the effect of Cd substitution on the archetypal heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$ via magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. The suppression of the Neel temperature, T$_{N}$, with Cd do** is more pronounced than with Sn. Nevertheless, a do** induced quantum critical point does not appear to be achievable in this system. The magnetic entropy at $T_N$ and the temperature of the maximum in resistivity are also systematically suppressed with Cd, while the effective moment and the Curie-Weiss temperature in the paramagnetic state are not affected. These results suggest that Cd locally disrupts the AFM order on its neighboring Ce moments, without affecting the valence of Ce. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the specific heat below $T_N$ is not consistent with 3D magnons in pure as well as in Cd-doped CeIn$_3$, a point that has been missed in previous investigations of CeIn$_3$ and that has bearing on the type of quantum criticality in this system.

Low temperature magnetic properties of Cd-doped Ce2MIn8 (M = Rh and Ir) single crystals are investigated. Experiments of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that Cd-do** enhances the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature from TN = 2.8 K (x = 0) to TN = 4.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2RhIn8-xCdx and induces long range AFM ordering with TN = 3.8 K (x = 0.21) for Ce2IrIn8-xCdx. Additionally, X-ray and neutron magnetic scattering studies showed that Cd-doped samples present below TN a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with a propagation vector (1/2,1/2,0). The resolved magnetic structures for both compounds indicate that the Cd-do** tends to rotate the direction of the ordered magnetic moments toward the ab-plane. This result suggests that the Cd-do** affects the Ce3+ ground state single ion anisotropy modifying the crystalline electrical field (CEF) parameters at the Ce3+ site. Indications of CEF evolution induced by Cd-do** were also found in the electrical resistivity measurements. Comparisons between our results and the general effects of Cd-do** on the related compounds CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh and Ir) confirms the claims that the Cd-do** induced electronic tuning is the main effect favoring AFM ordering in these compounds.
