p-type do** from the dielectric/semiconductor interface of a SnO2 thin film transistor (TFT) has been utilized to develop high carrier mobility balanced ambipolar oxide-transistor. To introduce this interfacial-do**, bottom-gate top-contact TFTs have been fabricated by using two different ion-conducting oxide dielectrics which contain trivalent atoms. These ion-conducting dielectrics are LilnO2 and LiGaO2 respectively, containing mobile Li+ ion. During SnO2 thin film fabrication on top of the ionic dielectric, those trivalent atoms allow p- do** to the interfacial SnO2 layer to introduce the hole conduction in channel of TFT. To realize this interfacial do** phenomena, a reference TFT has been fabricated with Li2ZnO2 dielectric under the same condition that contains divalent zinc (Zn) atom. Our comparative electrical data indicates that TFTs with LilnO2 and LiGaO2 dielectric are ambipolar in nature whereas, TFT with Li2ZnO2 dielectric is a unipolar n-channel transistor which reveals the interfacial do** of SnO2. Most interestingly, by using LilnO2 dielectric, we are capable to fabricated 1.0 V balanced ambipolar TFT with a high electron and hole mobility values of 7 cm2 V-1 s-1and 8 cm2 V-1 s-1 respectively with an on/off ratio >102 for both operations which has been utilized for low-voltage CMOS inverter fabrication.

Rare earth Manganite Nickelite double perovskites are prepared by solgel assisted combustion route, where, R varies from La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Y, and Ho. The samples have been systematically investigated using powder xray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, magnetization, and synchrotron based xray absorption spectroscopy measurements. All compounds in the family crystallize in the monoclinic structure and the monoclinic distortion enhances with decreasing trivalent rare earth radii. The magnetic ordering temperature, Tc, decreases from 270 K for La to 80 K for Ho samples as the rare earth radii decrease from 0.116nm for La to 0.102nm in case of Ho. An additional anomaly is observed in samples containing Nd, Sm, Tb, and Dy at lower temperatures, which originates from the 3d to 4f coupling between Mn and Ni and Nd, Sm, Tb and Dy magnetic moments. Further, high saturation magnetization is achieved for all samples indicating that they are atomically ordered and have less anti site disorders. Upon decreasing the size of rare earth ions, the local structure shows an expansion of NiO6 octahedra and almost unchanged MnO6 octahedra. Xray absorption near edge spectroscopy reveals that majority of Ni and Mn ions are in positive 2 and positive 4 valence states in all the samples. Raman spectra of RNMO show a softening of phonon modes resulting in the elongation of Ni to O and Mn to O bond lengths. Finally, a correlation between lattice parameters, structural distortion, octahedral tilting, superexchange angle, and electronic band gap, Curie temperature, and the rare earth ionic radius is established.

Local and long range structure, optical and photoluminescence properties of sol-gel synthesized Ce1-xNixO2 nanostructures have been studied. The crystal structure, lattice strain and crystallite size have been analyzed. A decrease in lattice parameter may be attributed to substitution of Ce with smaller Ni ion. UV-Vis measurement is used for studying the effect of Ni substitution on bandgap and disorder. The bandgap decreases with Ni substitution and disorder increases. The PL spectra show five major peaks attributed to various defect states. The PL emission decreases with Ni substitution owing to increase in defects which acts as emission quenching centers. The lattice disorder and defects have been studied using Raman spectroscopy. Raman measurement shows that oxygen vacancies related defects are increasing with Ni substitution which causes changes in optical and PL properties. Local structure measurements show that Ni substitution leads to oxygen vacancies which does change host lattice structure notably. Ce4+ to Ce3+ conversion increases with Ni substitution.

Effect of uncompensated Ga-V co-do** on structural phase transition, grain growth process and optical properties of TiO2 is reported here. Inhibition of phase transition due to co-do** is confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurement. Activation energy of phase transition increases from 120KJ/mol (x=0) to 140 KJ/mol (x=0.046) due to Ga-V co-do**. In anatase phase, lattice constants increase by the effect of Ga3+ interstitials. This results in inhibition of phase transition. Anatase phase becomes stable up to ~650 C in co-doped sample whereas for pure TiO2 phase transition starts in between 450-500 C. In anatase phase, strain increases due to co-do** which reduces crystallite size. In rutile phase, grain growth process is enhanced due to co-do** and particles show a rod-like structure with majority 110 facets. Bandgap decreases in both phases and reduced to a visible light region. BET analysis shows that surface area increases from 4.55 m2/g (x=0) to 96.53 m2/g (x=0.046) by Ga-V incorporation which provide a large number of active site for photocatalytic activity. Hence, co-doped anatase nanoparticle can be used as a promising candidate for photocatalytic applications using visible light up to a higher temperature ~650 C.

The structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of lead-free (Na0.5-xKxBi0.5-xLax)TiO3 powders synthesized by sol-gel self-combustion method were investigated. Rietveld refinement of Synchrotron x-ray diffraction data confirms pure single phase rhombohedral crystal structure with R3c space group for all the compositions and anti-phase octahedral tilting angle decreased with increase in composition x. Homogeneity and elemental proportions were confirmed by Energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The temperature-dependent dielectric study has shown two diffuse type of dielectric anomaly for all the samples, due to A-site disorder in the lattice, which has been assigned to two-has transitions: ferroelectric to anti-ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase transition. The transition temperature of these phase transitions is found to decrease as a function of composition. Thermal stability range of dielectric constant increases from ~100C to 220C as a function of composition. Stable dielectric constant first increases, from 1557 10 % for parent compound, with the composition, highest for 6 % composition with emid ~ 2508 10 % for the temperature range ~180 C to 340C and after that decreases to 1608 10 % for 12 % but remain higher than the parent compound Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3. Ferroelectric measurements have shown monotonously decreasing coercive field as a function of the composition due to a decrease in grain size, confirmed by microstructural studies using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope. Exponential increases in the energy storage efficiency from ~ 17 % to 87 % as a function of composition have also observed. These types of materials, with stable high dielectric constant and low tan delta, have a vast scope in the field of the thermally stable dielectric constant materials and energy storage applications.

ZnO is co-doped with Na+ and Si4+ in the ratio 2:1. The ratio was intentionally chosen so that net valence state of dopant theoretically matches that of host. This is to avoid dependence in the amount of oxygen vacancies/interstitials arising out of cationic valence state of the dopant. With such a combination, modifications in structural and optical properties do not depend on excess or deficit of the dopant charge state. For lower do**, Na+ ions behave as interstitial sites which enhance strain, lattice disorder and thereby creating defects. Formation of interstitial defects leads to reduction in bandgap energy and produce orange-red luminescence. For higher do**, Na+ starts substituting at Zn2+ site which helps in reducing strain and lattice disorder and thereby increases bandgap. Inspite of presence of Si4+ with higher charge, there is a gradual increase in oxygen vacancies due to lattice disorder.

Rietveld analyses of powder x-ray diffraction data confirmed the tetragonal structure for compositions with more than 0.18 and cubic structure for the sample with 0.25 composition. Temperature-dependent XRD was performed to investigate the structural change from tetragonal to cubic structure phase transition. Raman spectroscopy at room temperature also confirmed this phase transition with composition. Field emission scanning electron provided information about surface morphology while an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer attached with FESEM confirmed the chemical compositions of samples. Temperature and frequency dependent dielectric studies showed that the tetragonal to cubic phase transition decreased from 680 K to 175 K with the increase in the x from 0.03 to 0.25, respectively. This is correlated with the structural studies. Electric field dependent spontaneous polarization showed proper ferroelectric loop for 0.06 to 0.18 belonging to a tetragonal phase while after 0.25 composition the spontaneous polarization vanishes.Bipolar strain versus electric field revealed a butterfly loop for 0.06 to 0.18 compositions. Energy storage efficiency initially increases nominally with substitution but beyond 0.18 composition enhances considerably.

Among multifunctional double perovskite oxides, La2NiMnO6 has recently drawn significant attention due to its importance both in terms of understanding of fundamental physics and potential for device applications. The relative alteration in Ni:Mn ratio strongly influences the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La2NiMnO6. In the present study, La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 sample with Ni:Mn = 3:1 ratio has been prepared using sol-gel method and modifications of the above physical properties from that of a stiochiometric sample of La2NiMnO6 are discussed. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data shows that La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 samples belong to a major monoclinic structural phase (P21/n), with partially disordered arrangement of Ni and Mn ions. Magnetic characterization and X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis reveal ferromagnetic ordering around 260 K between Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions while spin glass like behavior is revealed at ~45 K. Semiconducting nature of the sample was confirmed from temperature dependent resistivity measurements as well as from the I-V characteristics measured at room temperature.

Si doped ZnO has been reported to be a better conductor than pure ZnO. It is reported that carrier density increases and hence conductivity increases. However, the effect on optical transmission is yet not clear until our recent report [1]. Zn1-xSixO for x= 0, 0.013, 0.020 and 0.027 have been synthesized using sol-gel method (a citric acid-glycerol route) followed by solid state sintering. We found that there is a decrease in defect states due to Si do**. The correlation of strain to the decrement in vacancy sites is discussed in this report. In modern electronics and solar cell fabrication, transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are important components which conduct electrically without absorbing visible light. Known TCOs are extremely costly and are composed of non-abundant elements. Search for new ecofriendly, cheap and sustainable TCOs has been a recent research of attraction. Kee** in mind that most solar cells are exposed to natural conditions, the humidity tolerance becomes a determining factor. We report that sensitivity to moisture decreases drastically while the conductivity and optical transparency increases with do**. The reduction of strain and improvement of transport properties results in increased conductivity of Si doped ZnO pellets, tempting us to envisage this material as a probable alternate TCO.
