Interaction of liquid crystals with a rigid body
Abstract: This article investigates the interaction of nematic liquid crystals modeled by a simplified Ericksen-Leslie model with a rigid body. It is shown that this problem is locally strongly well-posed, and that it also admits a unique, global strong solution for initial data close to constant equilibria. The proof of the global strong solution relies on a new splitting method for the director in a mean… ▽ More

Uniqueness of weak solutions to the primitive equations in some anisotropic spaces
Abstract: We consider the 3D or 2D primitive equations for oceans and atmosphere in the isothermal setting. In this paper, we establish a new conditional uniqueness result for weak solutions to the primitive equations, that is, if a weak solution belongs some scaling invariant function spaces, and satisfies some additional assumptions, then the weak solution is unique. In particular, our result can be obtai… ▽ More

Rigorous analysis of the interaction problem of sea ice with a rigid body
Abstract: Consider the set of equations modeling the motion of a rigid body enclosed in sea ice. Using Hibler's viscous-plastic model for describing sea ice, it is shown by a certain decoupling approach that this system admits a unique, local strong solution within the $\mathrm{L}^p$-setting.

Interaction of the primitive equations with sea ice dynamics
Abstract: This article establishes local strong well-posedness and global strong well-posedness close to constant equilibria of a model coupling the primitive equations of ocean and atmospheric dynamics with Hibler's viscous-plastic sea ice model. In order to treat the coupling conditions, an approach involving the hydrostatic Dirichlet and Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator is developed. Map** properties of t… ▽ More

A convergent finite element algorithm for mean curvature flow in arbitrary codimension
Abstract: Optimal-order uniform-in-time $H^1$-norm error estimates are given for semi- and full discretizations of mean curvature flow of surfaces in arbitrarily high codimension. The proposed and studied numerical method is based on a parabolic system coupling the surface flow to evolution equations for the mean curvature vector and for the orthogonal projection onto the tangent space. The algorithm uses… ▽ More

An abstract framework for interior-boundary conditions
Abstract: In a configuration space whose boundary can be identified with a subset of its interior, a boundary condition can relate the behaviour of a function on the boundary and in the interior. Additionally, boundary values can appear as additive perturbations. Such boundary conditions have recently provided insight into problems form quantum field theory. We discuss interior-boundary conditions in an abs… ▽ More

A convergent finite element algorithm for generalized mean curvature flows of closed surfaces
Abstract: An algorithm is proposed for generalized mean curvature flow of closed two-dimensional surfaces, which include inverse mean curvature flow, powers of mean and inverse mean curvature flow, etc. Error estimates are proven for semi- and full discretisations for the generalized flow. The algorithm proposed and studied here combines evolving surface finite elements, whose nodes determine the discrete s… ▽ More

The primitive equations with stochastic wind driven boundary conditions
Abstract: The primitive equations for geophysical flows are studied under the influence of {\em stochastic wind driven boundary conditions} modeled by a cylindrical Wiener process. We adapt an approach by Da Prato and Zabczyk for stochastic boundary value problems to define a notion of solutions. Then a rigorous treatment of these stochastic boundary conditions, which combines stochastic and deterministic m… ▽ More

Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on manifolds
Abstract: We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated to a strictly elliptic operator on the space $\mathrm{C}(\partial M)$ of continuous functions on the boundary $\partial M$ of a compact manifold $\overline{M}$ with boundary. We prove that it generates an analytic semigroup of angle $\fracπ{2}$. This yields that the corresponding strictly elliptic operator with Wentzell boundary conditions g… ▽ More

Operators with Wentzell boundary conditions and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator
Abstract: In this paper we relate the generator property of an operator $A$ with (abstract) generalized Wentzell boundary conditions on a Banach space $X$ and its associated (abstract) Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $N$ acting on a "boundary" space $\partial X$. Our approach is based on similarity transformations and perturbation arguments and allows to split $A$ into an operator $A_{00}$ with Dirichlet-type… ▽ More

Loss of AP-3 function affects spontaneous and evoked release at hippocampal mossy fiber synapses
Abstract: Synaptic vesicle (SV) exocytosis mediating neurotransmitter release occurs spontaneously at low intraterminal calcium concentrations and is stimulated by a rise in intracellular calcium. Exocytosis is compensated for by the reformation of vesicles at plasma membrane and endosomes. Although the adaptor complex AP-3 was proposed to be involved in the formation of SVs from endosomes, whether its fu… ▽ More
