Abstract:
Due to the small photon momentum, optical spectroscopy commonly probes magnetic excitations only at the center of the Brillouin zone; however, there are ways to override this restriction. Due to the small photon momentum, optical spectroscopy commonly probes magnetic excitations only at the center of the Brillouin zone; however, there are ways to override this restriction. In the case of the distorted kagome quantum magnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, under scrutiny here, the magnon density of states can be accessed over the entire Brillouin zone through three-center magnon excitations. This mechanism is aided by the three different magnetic sublattices and strong short-range correlations in the distorted kagome lattice. The results of THz time-domain experiments agree remarkably well with linear spin-wave theory. Relaxing the conventional zone-center constraint of photons gives a new aspect to probe magnetism in matter.

Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu$_{5-x}$Zn$_x$V$_2$O$_{10}$(CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples ($x=0$) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the non-magnetic phases for $x> 0.25$ compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. Our results illustrate the effect of magnetic interactions in THz spectra of frustrated magnets.

In order to understand the physical properties of the series of organic conductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$X$ with $X$ = Cl, Br, and I, not only electronic correlations but also the effect of disorder has to be taken into account. In order to understand the physical properties of the series of organic conductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]$X$ with $X$ = Cl, Br, and I, not only electronic correlations but also the effect of disorder has to be taken into account. While for Cl- and Br-containing salts the influence of both parameters were investigated and a universal phase diagram was proposed, the position of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]I is still not settled. Here we have conducted transport, infrared, and dielectric measurements on single crystals of the title compound to clarify its electronic state at low temperatures. The correlation strength was determined as $U/W \approx 2.2$; thus this salt is placed deeper in an insulating state compare to the two sister compounds. We found that inherent disorder leads to a Coulomb localized insulating state similar to the moderately x-ray-irradiated $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl.

The quasi-one-dimensional spin ladder compounds, BaFe$_2$S$_3$ and BaFe$_2$Se$_3$, are investigated by infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We observe strong anisotropic electronic properties and an optical gap in the leg direction that is gradually filled above the antiferromagnetic (afm) ordering temperature, turning the systems into a metallic phase. Combining the optical data with the DFT calculations we associate the optical gap feature with the $p$-$d$ transition that appears only in the afm ordered state. Hence, the insulating ground state along the leg direction is attributed to Slater physics rather than Mott-type correlations.

A room-temperature infrared spectroscopy study of elemental tellurium at pressures up to 8.44 GPa in the energy range 0.015-2 eV is reported. Optical signatures of the high-pressure polymorphs are investigated and compared to the results of density-functional band-structure calculations. A Drude peak is first seen in the optical conductivity around 3.5 GPa indicating a semiconductor-to-metal transition within trigonal Te-I. A sharp increase in the Drude spectral weight and dc-conductivity around 4.3 GPa signals the transformation toward the triclinic Te-II polymorph. An absorption peak around 0.15 eV appears above 5 GPa concomitant with the gradual transformation of Te-II into the structurally similar but incommensurately modulated Te-III. Microscopically, this peak can only be reproduced within a sufficiently large commensurate approximant, suggesting the low-energy optical response as a fingerprint of the structural modulation.

Employing high-pressure infrared spectroscopy we unveil the Weyl semimetal phase of elemental Te and its topological properties. The linear frequency dependence of the optical conductivity provides clear evidence for metallization of trigonal tellurium (Te-I) and the linear band dispersion above 3.0 GPa. This semimetallic Weyl phase can be tuned by increasing pressure further: a kink separates two linear regimes in the optical conductivity (at 3.7 GPa), a signature proposed for Type-II Weyl semimetals with tilted cones; this however reveals a different origin in trigonal tellurium. Our density-functional calculations do not reveal any significant tilting and suggest that Te-I remains in the Type-I Weyl phase, but with two valence bandsin the vicinity of the Fermi level. Their interplay giving rise to the peculiar optical conductivity behavior with more than one linear regime. Pressure above 4.3 GPa stabilizes the more complex Te-II and Te-III polymorphs, which are robust metals.

The honeycomb Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ loses its low-temperature magnetic order by pressure. We report clear evidence for a dimerized structure at $P>1$ GPa and observe the breakdown of the relativistic $j_{\rm eff}$ picture in this regime strongly affecting the electronic properties. A pressure-induced Kitaev quantum spin liquid cannot occur in this broken symmetry state. We shed light on the new phase by broad-band infrared spectroscopy of the low-temperature properties of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ and ab initio density functional theory calculations, both under hydrostatic pressure.
