In this work, we derive a novel black hole solution surrounded by a Dehnen-(1,4,0) type dark matter halo by embedding a Schwarzschild black hole within the halo, constituting a composite dark matter-black hole system. The thermodynamics of the resulting effective black hole spacetime is then studied with particular attention to the influence of the dark matter parameters on various thermodynamic properties. We examine the specific heat and free energy to assess the thermodynamic stability of the model. Furthermore, the null geodesics and the effective potential of light rays are studied to investigate how the dark matter parameters affect these geodesics and the radii of circular orbits. The stability of circular null geodesics is analyzed using dynamical systems and Lyapunov exponents, which represents the dynamical behaviour of the circular photon orbits.

In this paper, we explore the possibility of the formation of a traversable wormhole geometry in General Relativity sustained by particle creation mechanism. Gravitational particle creation mechanism is a thermodynamic approach to generate repulsive back-reaction gravitational effects through the thermodynamic creation of particles. This repulsive back-reaction pressure can be thought of as a source of sustaining a traversable wormhole. In the first part of this paper, we systematically model a wormhole geometry through the process of particle creation by assuming an inverse square variation law of particle creation pressure within the wormhole geometry, and the shape function for the wormhole is obtained, assuming the redshift function as constant and finite. The obtained shape function is found to adhere to the feasibility conditions (flaring out condition and asymptotic flatness condition) of a viable wormhole geometry. In the second part of the paper, again by assuming a constant and finite redshift function, we studied the radial evolutionary behaviour of the particle creation pressures for three commonly utilized toy shape-functions. The examination of the energy conditions namely the Null Energy Condition (NEC) and the Dominant Energy Condition (DEC) for all these models reveal that the NEC is violated for the shape-function derived from the first principles of particle creation mechanism, as well as for the toy shape functions. The DEC is however found to be satisfied for all the aforementioned cases. In essence, NEC violation occurs through the particle creation phenomena inside the wormhole structure in spite of the existence of non-exotic matter.

In communication-deprived disaster scenarios, this paper introduces a Micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)- enhanced content management system. In the absence of cellular infrastructure, this system deploys a hybrid network of stationary and mobile UAVs to offer vital content access to isolated communities. Static anchor UAVs equipped with both vertical and lateral links cater to local users, while agile micro-ferrying UAVs, equipped with lateral links and greater mobility, reach users in various communities. The primary goal is to devise an adaptive content dissemination system that dynamically learns caching policies to maximize content accessibility. The paper proposes a decentralized Top-k Multi-Armed Bandit (Top-k MAB) learning approach for UAV caching decisions, accommodating geotemporal disparities in content popularity and diverse content demands. The proposed mechanism involves a Selective Caching Algorithm that algorithmically reduces redundant copies of the contents by leveraging the shared information between the UAVs. It is demonstrated that Top-k MAB learning, along with selective caching algorithm, can improve system performance while making the learning process adaptive. This paper presents a computationally efficient and distributed speaker diarization framework for networked IoT-style audio devices. The work proposes a Federated Learning model which can identify the participants in a conversation without the requirement of a large audio database for training. An unsupervised online update mechanism is proposed for the Federated Learning model which depends on cosine similarity of speaker embeddings. Moreover, the proposed diarization system solves the problem of speaker change detection via. unsupervised segmentation techniques using Hotelling's t-squared Statistic and Bayesian Information Criterion. In this new approach, speaker change detection is biased around detected quasi-silences, which reduces the severity of the trade-off between the missed detection and false detection rates. Additionally, the computational overhead due to frame-by-frame identification of speakers is reduced via. unsupervised clustering of speech segments. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed training method in the presence of non-IID speech data. It also shows a considerable improvement in the reduction of false and missed detection at the segmentation stage, while reducing the computational overhead. Improved accuracy and reduced computational cost makes the mechanism suitable for real-time speaker diarization across a distributed IoT audio network.

In this paper, in an FLRW background and a perfect fluid equation of state, we explore the possibility of the realization of an emergent scenario in a 4D regularized extension of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, with the field equations particularly expressed in terms of scalar-tensor degrees of freedom. By assuming non-zero spatial curvature ($k = \pm 1$), the stability of the Einstein static universe (ESU) and its subsequent exit into the standard inflationary system is tested through different approaches. In terms of dynamical systems, a spatially closed universe rather than an open universe shows appealing behaviour to exhibit a graceful transition from the Einstein static universe to standard cosmological history. We found that under linear homogeneous perturbations, for some constraints imposed on the model parameters, the Einstein static universe is stable under those perturbations. Moreover, it is noted that for a successful graceful transition, the equation of state $ω$ must satisfy the conditions $-1 < ω<0$ and $ω< -1$ for closed and open universes, respectively. Also, under density perturbations, the Einstein static universe is unstable if the fluid satisfies the strong energy condition but is stable if it violates it, for both closed and open universes. Furthermore, the Einstein static universe is seen to be stable under vector perturbations and tensor perturbations, regardless of whether the fluid obeys or violates the SEC.

This paper proposes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided content management system in communication-challenged disaster scenarios. Without cellular infrastructure in such scenarios, community of stranded users can be provided access to situation-critical contents using a hybrid network of static and traveling UAVs. A set of relatively static anchor UAVs can download content from central servers and provide content access to its local users. A set of ferrying UAVs with wider mobility can provision content to users by shuffling them across different anchor UAVs while visiting different communities of users. The objective is to design a content dissemination system that on-the-fly learns content caching policies for maximizing content availability to the stranded users. This paper proposes a decentralized Top-k Multi-Armed Bandit Learning model for UAV-caching decision-making that takes geo-temporal differences in content popularity and heterogeneity in content demands into consideration. The proposed paradigm is able to combine the expected reward maximization attribute and a proposed multi-dimensional reward structure of Top-k Multi-Armed Bandit, for caching decision at the UAVs. This study is done for different user-specified tolerable access delay, heterogeneous popularity distributions, and inter-community geographical characteristics. Functional verification and performance evaluation of the proposed caching framework is done for a wide range of network size, UAV distribution, and content popularity.

The death toll and monetary damages from landslides continue to rise despite advancements in predictive modeling. The predictive capability of these models is limited as landslide databases used in training and assessing the models often have crucial information missing, such as underlying failure types. Here, we present an approach for identifying failure types based on their movements, e.g., slides and flows by leveraging 3D landslide topology. We observe topological proxies reveal prevalent signatures of mass movement mechanics embedded in the landslide's morphology or shape, such as detecting coupled movement styles within complex landslides. We find identical failure types exhibit similar topological properties, and by using them as predictors, we can identify failure types in historic and event-specific landslide databases (including multi-temporal) from various geomorphological and climatic contexts such as Italy, the US Pacific Northwest region, Denmark, Turkey, and China with 80 to 94 % accuracy. To demonstrate the real-world application of the method, we implement it in two undocumented datasets from China and publicly release the datasets. These new insights can considerably improve the performance of landslide predictive models and impact assessments. Moreover, our work introduces a new paradigm for studying landslide shapes to understand underlying processes through the lens of landslide topology.

Automatic analysis of colonoscopy images has been an active field of research motivated by the importance of early detection of precancerous polyps. However, detecting polyps during the live examination can be challenging due to various factors such as variation of skills and experience among the endoscopists, lack of attentiveness, and fatigue leading to a high polyp miss-rate. Deep learning has emerged as a promising solution to this challenge as it can assist endoscopists in detecting and classifying overlooked polyps and abnormalities in real time. In addition to the algorithm's accuracy, transparency and interpretability are crucial to explaining the whys and hows of the algorithm's prediction. Further, most algorithms are developed in private data, closed source, or proprietary software, and methods lack reproducibility. Therefore, to promote the development of efficient and transparent methods, we have organized the "Medico automatic polyp segmentation (Medico 2020)" and "MedAI: Transparency in Medical Image Segmentation (MedAI 2021)" competitions. We present a comprehensive summary and analyze each contribution, highlight the strength of the best-performing methods, and discuss the possibility of clinical translations of such methods into the clinic. For the transparency task, a multi-disciplinary team, including expert gastroenterologists, accessed each submission and evaluated the team based on open-source practices, failure case analysis, ablation studies, usability and understandability of evaluations to gain a deeper understanding of the models' credibility for clinical deployment. Through the comprehensive analysis of the challenge, we not only highlight the advancements in polyp and surgical instrument segmentation but also encourage qualitative evaluation for building more transparent and understandable AI-based colonoscopy systems.

Integrating real-time artificial intelligence (AI) systems in clinical practices faces challenges such as scalability and acceptance. These challenges include data availability, biased outcomes, data quality, lack of transparency, and underperformance on unseen datasets from different distributions. The scarcity of large-scale, precisely labeled, and diverse datasets are the major challenge for clinical integration. This scarcity is also due to the legal restrictions and extensive manual efforts required for accurate annotations from clinicians. To address these challenges, we present \textit{GastroVision}, a multi-center open-access gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy dataset that includes different anatomical landmarks, pathological abnormalities, polyp removal cases and normal findings (a total of 27 classes) from the GI tract. The dataset comprises 8,000 images acquired from Bærum Hospital in Norway and Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden and was annotated and verified by experienced GI endoscopists. Furthermore, we validate the significance of our dataset with extensive benchmarking based on the popular deep learning based baseline models. We believe our dataset can facilitate the development of AI-based algorithms for GI disease detection and classification. Our dataset is available at \url{https://osf.io/84e7f/}.

Semantic segmentation is a pixel-level prediction task to classify each pixel of the input image. Deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been extremely successful in achieving excellent performances in this domain. However, mobile application, such as autonomous driving, demand real-time processing of incoming stream of images. Hence, achieving efficient architectures along with enhanced accuracy is of paramount importance. Since, accuracy and model size of CNNs are intrinsically contentious in nature, the challenge is to achieve a decent trade-off between accuracy and model size. To address this, we propose a novel Factorized Pyramidal Learning (FPL) module to aggregate rich contextual information in an efficient manner. On one hand, it uses a bank of convolutional filters with multiple dilation rates which leads to multi-scale context aggregation; crucial in achieving better accuracy. On the other hand, parameters are reduced by a careful factorization of the employed filters; crucial in achieving lightweight models. Moreover, we decompose the spatial pyramid into two stages which enables a simple and efficient feature fusion within the module to solve the notorious checkerboard effect. We also design a dedicated Feature-Image Reinforcement (FIR) unit to carry out the fusion operation of shallow and deep features with the downsampled versions of the input image. This gives an accuracy enhancement without increasing model parameters. Based on the FPL module and FIR unit, we propose an ultra-lightweight real-time network, called FPLNet, which achieves state-of-the-art accuracy-efficiency trade-off. More specifically, with only less than 0.5 million parameters, the proposed network achieves 66.93\% and 66.28\% mIoU on Cityscapes validation and test set, respectively. Moreover, FPLNet has a processing speed of 95.5 frames per second (FPS).

This paper proposes a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) MAC slot allocation protocol with efficient bandwidth usage in wireless sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoTs). The developed protocol has two primary components: a Multi-Armed Bandits (MAB)-based slot allocation mechanism for collision free transmission, and a Decentralized Defragmented Slot Backshift (DDSB) operation for improving bandwidth usage efficiency. The proposed framework is decentralized in that each node finds its transmission schedule independently without the control of any centralized arbitrator. The developed mechanism is suitable for networks with or without time synchronization, thus, making it suitable for low-complexity wireless transceivers for wireless sensor and IoT nodes. This framework is able to manage the trade-off between learning convergence time and bandwidth. In addition, it allows the nodes to adapt to topological changes while maintaining efficient bandwidth usage. The developed logic is tested for both fully-connected and arbitrary mesh networks with extensive simulation experiments. It is shown how the nodes can learn to select collision-free transmission slots using MAB. Moreover, the nodes learn to self-adjust their transmission schedules using a novel DDSB framework in order to reduce bandwidth usage.

This article explores the concepts of online protocol synthesis using Reinforcement Learning (RL). The study is performed in the context of sensor and IoT networks with ultra low complexity wireless transceivers. The paper introduces the use of RL and Multi Armed Bandit (MAB), a specific type of RL, for Medium Access Control (MAC) under different network and traffic conditions. It then introduces a novel learning based protocol synthesis framework that addresses specific difficulties and limitations in medium access for both random access and time slotted networks. The mechanism does not rely on carrier sensing, network time-synchronization, collision detection, and other low level complex operations, thus making it ideal for ultra simple transceiver hardware used in resource constrained sensor and IoT networks. Additionally, the ability of independent protocol learning by the nodes makes the system robust and adaptive to the changes in network and traffic conditions. It is shown that the nodes can be trained to learn to avoid collisions, and to achieve network throughputs that are comparable to ALOHA based access protocols in sensor and IoT networks with simplest transceiver hardware. It is also shown that using RL, it is feasible to synthesize access protocols that can sustain network throughput at high traffic loads, which is not feasible in the ALOHA-based systems. The ability of the system to provide throughput fairness under network and traffic heterogeneities are also experimentally demonstrated.

A deep learning-based monocular depth estimation (MDE) technique is proposed for selection of most informative frames (key frames) of an endoscopic video. In most of the cases, ground truth depth maps of polyps are not readily available and that is why the transfer learning approach is adopted in our method. An endoscopic modalities generally capture thousands of frames. In this scenario, it is quite important to discard low-quality and clinically irrelevant frames of an endoscopic video while the most informative frames should be retained for clinical diagnosis. In this view, a key-frame selection strategy is proposed by utilizing the depth information of polyps. In our method, image moment, edge magnitude, and key-points are considered for adaptively selecting the key frames. One important application of our proposed method could be the 3D reconstruction of polyps with the help of extracted key frames. Also, polyps are localized with the help of extracted depth maps.

Pulse transit time (PTT) has been widely used for cuffless blood pressure (BP) measurement. But, it requires more than one cardiovascular signals involving more than one sensing device. In this paper, we propose a method for continuous cuffless blood pressure measurement with the help of left ventricular ejection time (LVET). The LVET is estimated using a signal obtained through a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS)-based accelerometric sensor. The sensor acquires a seismocardiogram (SCG) signal at the chest surface, and the LVET information is extracted. Both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) are estimated by calibrating the system with the original arterial blood pressure values of the subjects. The proposed method is evaluated using different quantitative measures on the signals collected from ten subjects under the supine position. The performance of the proposed method is also compared with two earlier approaches, where PTT intervals are estimated from electrocardiogram (ECG)-photoplethysmogram (PPG) and SCG-PPG, respectively. The performance results clearly show that the proposed method is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods. Also, the computed blood pressure is compared with the original one, measured through a CNAP system. It gives the mean errors of the estimated systolic BP and diastolic BP within the range of -0.19 +/- 3.3 mmHg and -1.29 +/- 2.6 mmHg, respectively. The mean absolute errors for systolic BP and diastolic BP are 3.2 mmHg and 2.6 mmHg, respectively. The accuracy of BPs estimated from the proposed method satisfies the requirements of the IEEE standard of 5 +/- 8 mmHg deviation, and thus, it may be used for ubiquitous long term blood pressure monitoring.

The use of hand gestures can be a useful tool for many applications in the human-computer interaction community. In a broad range of areas hand gesture techniques can be applied specifically in sign language recognition, robotic surgery, etc. In the process of hand gesture recognition, proper detection, and tracking of the moving hand become challenging due to the varied shape and size of the hand. Here the objective is to track the movement of the hand irrespective of the shape, size, and color of the hand. And, for this, a motion template guided by optical flow (OFMT) is proposed. OFMT is a compact representation of the motion information of a gesture encoded into a single image. In the experimentation, different datasets using bare hand with an open palm, and folded palm wearing green-glove are used, and in both cases, we could generate the OFMT images with equal precision. Recently, deep network-based techniques have shown impressive improvements as compared to conventional hand-crafted feature-based techniques. Moreover, in the literature, it is seen that the use of different streams with informative input data helps to increase the performance in the recognition accuracy. This work basically proposes a two-stream fusion model for hand gesture recognition and a compact yet efficient motion template based on optical flow. Specifically, the two-stream network consists of two layers: a 3D convolutional neural network (C3D) that takes gesture videos as input and a 2D-CNN that takes OFMT images as input. C3D has shown its efficiency in capturing spatio-temporal information of a video. Whereas OFMT helps to eliminate irrelevant gestures providing additional motion information. Though each stream can work independently, they are combined with a fusion scheme to boost the recognition results. We have shown the efficiency of the proposed two-stream network on two databases.

In this work, a seismocardiogram (SCG) based breathing-state measuring method is proposed for m-health applications. The aim of the proposed framework is to assess the human respiratory system by identifying degree-of-breathings, such as breathlessness, normal breathing, and long and labored breathing. For this, it is needed to measure cardiac-induced chest-wall vibrations, reflected in the SCG signal. Orthogonal subspace projection is employed to extract the SCG cycles with the help of a concurrent ECG signal. Subsequently, fifteen statistically significant morphological-features are extracted from each of the SCG cycles. These features can efficiently characterize physiological changes due to varying respiratory rates. Stacked autoencoder (SAE) based architecture is employed for the identification of different respiratory-effort levels. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared with other standard classifiers for 1147 analyzed SCG-beats. The proposed method gives an overall average accuracy of 91.45% in recognizing three different breathing states. The quantitative analysis of the performance results clearly shows the effectiveness of the proposed framework. It may be employed in various healthcare applications, such as pre-screening medical sensors and IoT based remote health-monitoring systems.

Precise estimation of fiducial points of a seismocardiogram (SCG) signal is a challenging problem for its clinical usage. Delineation techniques proposed in the existing literature do not estimate all the clinically significant points of an SCG signal, simultaneously. The aim of this research work is to propose a delineation framework to identify IM, AO, IC, AC, pAC and MO fiducial points with the help of a PPG signal. The proposed delineation method processes a wavelet-based scalographic PPG and an envelope construction scheme is proposed to estimate the prominent peaks of the PPG signal. A set of amplitude histogram based decision rules is developed for estimation of SCG diastole phases, namely AC, pAC and MO. Subsequently, the systolic phases, IM, AO and IC are detected by applying diastole masking on SCG and decision rules. Experimental results on real-time SCG signals acquired from our designed data acquisition-circuitry and their analysis show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Additionally, these estimated parameters are analyzed to show the discrimination between normal breathing and breathlessness conditions.

Ultrafast Bessel beams demonstrate a significant capacity of structuring transparent materials with high degree of accuracy and exceptional aspect ratio. The ability to localize energy on the nanometer scale (bypassing the 100 nm milestone) makes them ideal tools for advanced laser nanoscale processing on surfaces and in the bulk. This allows to generate and combine micron and nano-sized features into hybrid structures that show novel functionalities. Their high aspect ratio and the accurate location can equally drive an efficient material modification and processing strategy on large dimensions. We review here the main concepts of generating and using Bessel non-diffractive beams and their remarkable features, discuss general characteristics of their interaction with matter in ablation and material modification regimes, and advocate their use for obtaining hybrid micro and nanoscale structures in two and three dimensions performing complex functions. High throughput applications are indicated. The example list ranges from surface nanostructuring and laser cutting to ultrafast laser welding and the fabrication of three dimensional photonic systems embedded in the volume.

In recent years, Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) have become the backbone of a large number of consumer electronic devices leading to a surge in their production. This has made it imperative to employ automatic inspection systems to identify manufacturing defects in PCB before they are installed in the respective systems. An important task in this regard is the classification of defects as either true or pseudo defects, which decides if the PCB is to be re-manufactured or not. This work proposes a novel approach to detect most common defects in the PCBs. The problem has been approached by employing highly discriminative features based on multi-scale wavelet transform, which are further boosted by using a kernalized version of the support vector machines (SVM). A real world printed circuit board dataset has been used for quantitative analysis. Experimental results demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method.

We present the effect of a nanostructured surface on the emission of ions and electrons from intense (5-36 Petwatt per sq.cm) femtosecond laser produced plasmas. Electrons from optically polished copper targets coated with copper nanoparticles (CuNP) are observed to be hotter than those from uncoated polished targets. A nearly two-fold enhancement is observed for ions in the range 14-74 keV, while ion yield decreases by a factor of 2 in the 74-2000 keV range. The total ion yields measured using a large area Faraday cup are more from CuNP targets than those from polished Cu targets, indicating increased ion beam divergence due to surface modulations.
