Microscopic description in the study of immiscibility and segregating properties of liquid metallic binary alloys has gained a renewed scientific and technological interests during the last eight years for the physicists, metallurgists and chemists. Especially, in understanding the basic mechanisms, from the point of interionic interaction, and how and why segregation in some metallic alloys takes place at and under certain thermodynamic state specified by temperature and pressure. An overview of the theoretical and experimental works done by different authors or groups in the area of segregation combining electronic theory of metals, statistical mechanics and the perturbative approach is presented in this review. Main attention in this review is focused on the static effects such as the effects of energy of mixing, enthalpy of mixing, entropy of mixing and understanding the critical behaviour of segregation of alloys from the microscopic theoretical approach. Investigation of segregating properties from the dynamic effects such as from the effects of shear viscosity and diffusion coefficient is just becoming available. However, we have restricted this review only on static effects and their variation of impacts on different alloys.

Local minimum appearing in the interionic pair interactions, when derived from local model pseudopotential, for Al (and some other polyvalent metals) remains as a long standing problem of clear understanding although some attempts are made by different authors. The origin of this feature of local minimum is systematically investigated in this article, considering both the chemical valence, Z, and the core radius, $R_{c}$ as variables. Ashcroft's empty core model is used to describe the interionic pair-potential, because, it depends on these two parameters only. Results of this investigation show that monovalent metals do not exhibit a local minimum at small $r$ but some polyvalent metals does where, the core radius plays the major role.

The free energy of mixing and the entropy of mixing for Cu$_{x}$Al$_{1-x}$ liquid binary alloys have been systematically investigated by using the electronic theory of metals along with the perturbation approach at a thermodynamic state $T=1373$ K. The interionic interaction and a reference liquid are the fundamental components of the theory. The interionic interaction is described by a local pseudopotential. A liquid of hard spheres (HS) of two different effective diametres is used to describe the reference system for alloys. The results of the calculations for energy of mixing agree well with the available experimental data. Calculation of entropy of mixing is parameter free and, the agreement with experiment, in this case, is found to be fairly good.

The shift of density of Bose gas due to the mean field potential (MFP) and the Casimir effect is systematically investigated in the $d$-dimensional configuration space from the point of thermodynamic consideration. We show that, for $d=3$, the shift of density arises completely due to the Casimir effect and, the MFP remains totally ineffective regardless of the state, condensate or non-condensate. But for dimension $d>3$ the MFP plays an active role in shifting the density of Bose gas along with the Casimir interaction. The sign of density shift becomes positive in the present case. So, the corresponding critical temperature shift would be negative, because these two shifts are related as $Δn_{c}$/$n_{c}$ $\approx$ -$ΔT_{c}$/$T_{c}$. It is important to note that, the MFP causes a shift of density for $d>3$ even when the Casimir effect is not there, and the sign of shift becomes negative then; consequently, the critical temperature shift would be positive with MFP alone in this particular situation.

Some properties of an ideal gas of massive bosons in a mean field potential and, confined between two infinite parallel slabs in a d-dimensional configuration space are investigated systematically. Here, one particle density of states approach is employed to study the critical temperature, shift of density, Casimir effects and critical exponents, starting from the evaluation of the grand canonical free energy in d-dimension. We have found that, the shift of density, Casimir force and the critical temperature depend on the space dimensionality. But the Casimir force decays as an inverse power law of the distance between two slabs in the condensate and, decays exponentially in the non-condensed state situated very close to the point of phase transition. Most importently, this study enabled us to predict the shift of the density of excited bosons due to mean field potential, and also the dimensional dependence of the critical exponent. The form of the critical exponent is found to be $\frac{1}{d-2}$ for the imperfect Bose gas. This leads to a value of critical exponent $1$ for $d=3$.

Thermodynamics of ideal Fermi gas trapped in an external generic power law potential $U=\sum_{i=1} ^d c_i |\frac{x_i}{a_i}|^{n_i}$ are investigated systematically from the grand thermodynamic potential in $d$ dimensional space. These properties are explored deeply in the degenerate limit ($μ>> K_BT$), where the thermodynamic properties are greatly dominated by Pauli exclusion principle. Pressure and energy along with the isothermal compressibilty is non zero at $T=0K$, denoting trapped Fermi system is quite live even at absolute zero temperature. The nonzero value of compressibilty denotes zero point pressure is not just a constant but depends on volume.

Several static and dynamic properties of liquid Cu, Ag and Au at thermodynamic states near their respective melting points, have been evaluated by means of the orbital free ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation method. The calculated static structure shows good agreement with the available X-ray and neutron diffraction data. As for the dynamic properties, the calculated dynamic structure factors point to the existence of collective density excitations along with a positive dispersion for l-Cu and l-Ag. Several transport coefficients have been obtained which show a reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.
