Nanomechanical resonator-based sensing devices are used in medical diagnostics based on their high-frequency dynamic behavior. Cantilevers fall into the category of Nanomechanical resonators. It also resembles a resonator whose shape is like that of a nanowire clamped at one end. As the surface-to-volume ratio of a nanowire resonator increases due to scaling down, surface stress plays a crucial role in the mechanical behavior of a resonator. Piezoresistive MEMS cantilevers are used for vapor phase analysis of volatile compounds and gas. Studies were done to address the mass sensitivity issues and fractures associated with bioceramic and nanocomposite coatings-based cantilever resonators. The studies show how the sensing performance can be determined or tuned. Nanomechanical studies of thin films of SiCN on silicon were performed. The sharpness of the tip was found to have an influence on the tip-sample conduction mechanism useful for MEMS applications

Abstract:
Raman studies of nanocomposite SiCN thin film by sputtering showed that with an increase of substrate temperature from room temperature to 500oC, a transition from mostly sp2 graphitic phase to sp3 carbon took place which was observed from the variation of ID/IG ratio and the peak shifts. This process resulted in the growth of C3N4 and Si3N4 crystallites in the amorphous matrix which led to an increase in hardness and modulus obtained through nanoindentation. However, at a further higher temperature of 600oC, again an increase of sp2 C concentration in the film was observed and the H and E values showed a decrease due to increased growth of graphitic carbon phase. The whole process got reflected in a modified four stage Ferrari Robertson model of Raman spectroscopy.

Coatings of ternary nanocomposite Si-C-N ceramic coatings have shown newer and improved mechanical and functional properties over the coarser and monolithic coatings. Properties like high hardness, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, tunable band gap and chemical inertness have been observed for Si-C-N which makes its potential for numerous applications. Although lot of research has taken place in Si-C-N coatings, proper understanding of the effect of different parameters on the coating properties are still not resolved. The changes occurring in fraction of Si, C and N and the phases forming in the coatings with variation in deposition conditions require investigations. This research paper gives a systematic study of the role of different deposition parameters like substrate temperature, pressure, power on the nucleation and growth, structure, microstructural bonding and mechanical properties of the film deposited by magnetron sputtering which adds significantly to the fundamental knowledge of nanocomposite Si-C-N coatings as well as its applications.

Nanoindentation is an effective way of finding mechanical properties at nanoscale. They are especially useful for thin films where elimination of the substrate effect is required. The mechanism is based upon depth sensing indentation based on Oliver and Pharr modeling. Nanoindentation was used to evaluate the nanomechanical and fractographic properties of hard coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering. Radial and lateral cracks accompanied by delamination of the coatings were observed during the indentation tests. A novel phenomenon of stress induced crystallization was observed in case of the CNx films which resulted in crack deflection. Indentations at micro scale using Vickers Indenter were also done and the cracking phenomena were analyzed.

BMI is commercially available as Homide 250. BMI coating has also been used for the corrosion protection. Metallization (AL) of BMI using vacuum evaporation was done which serves the purpose of prevention of space charge accumulation in aircraft bodies. Addition of inorganic materials like metal oxides can influence the properties of the polymer as an inorganic-organic composite. The organic-ionorganic composites have wide applications in electronics, optics, chemistry and medicine. Titanium dioxide (TiO2, Titania) has a wide range of applications starting from photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells to optical coatings and electronics. A BMI-TiO2 composite was prepared by chemical route. Atmospheric Plasma Jet (APPJ) using Helium gas was also treated on BMI. XRD and FTIR studies of the composite system prepared at different temperatures showed its crystalline and structural configuration.

Soft films on hard substrate showed more pile up than usual which was attributed to the dislocation pile up at the film substrate interface. The effect of tip blunting on the load depth and hardness plots of nanoindentation was shown. The experimental date of variation of Vickers hardness with film thickness and loads were fitted and new parameters were analyzed. The delaminated area was analyzed using geometrical shapes using optical view of the failure region along with the load displacement Indentation fracture using Nanoindentation using Berkovich indenter has been studied. Indentation fracture toughness (KR) was analyzed based on computational programs. The contact mechanics during nanoindentation was studied with parameters related to indenter shape and tip sharpness. Elastic, plastic and total energies were computationally determined. The energy difference was related to shear stress being generated with elastic to plastic transition. Change in the nature of residual stress was related to film thickness.

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins are a new breed of thermosetting resins used mainly for high temperature applications and have major usage in aerospace. FTIR studies have shown the signatures of imide, CNC stretching, malemide and N-H stretching. These BMI polymer coatings were deposited on aluminum and mild steel substrates by sprinkling powers followed by baking. Thermo gravimetric analysis and Differential scanning calorimetric studies showed the degradation temperature of these polymers around 370oC. Aluminum coatings were deposited on BMI previously deposited on Al and mild steel to make a metal-BMI-metal trilayer. These trilayers can solve the problem charging of the aircraft bodies at high altitudes. Atomic force microscopy was done to determine the morphology of the surface. Roughness and thickness measurements of the BMI coatings were carried out by surface profilometer. Vickers microhardness tests showed an increase in hardness of the metal-BMI-metal trilayer. FTIR spectrum showed signature of imides, CNC stretching, maleimide and N-H stretching in BMI. We observed that peak broadens at which shows the release of the stress during thermal treatment of the coating. The coating is subject to variable APPJ conditions which improve the properties at high temperature.
