[Abridged] We carried out optical polarimetry of five dense cores, (IRAM 04191, L1521F, L328, L673-7, and L1014) which are found to harbour VeLLO. This study was conducted mainly to understand the role played by the magnetic field in the formation of very low and substellar mass range objects using optical polarisation. The angular offsets between the envelope magnetic field direction (inferred from optical polarisation measurements) and the outflow position angles from the VeLLOs in IRAM 04191, L1521F, L328, L673-7, and L1014 are found to be 84$^\circ$, 53$^\circ$, 24$^\circ$, 08$^\circ$, and 15$^\circ$, respectively. The mean value of the offsets for all the five clouds is $\sim37^\circ$. If we exclude IRAM 04191, the mean value reduces to become $\sim25^\circ$. In IRAM 04191, the offset between the projected envelope and the inner magnetic field (inferred from the submillimetre data from SCUPOL) is found to be $\sim68^\circ$. The inner magnetic field, however, is found to be nearly aligned with the projected position angles of the minor axis, the rotation axis of the cloud, and the outflow from the IRAM 04191-IRS. We discuss a possible explanation for the nearly perpendicular orientation between the envelope and core scale magnetic fields in IRAM04191. The angular offset between the envelope magnetic field direction and the minor axis of IRAM 04191, L1521F, L673-7, and L1014 are 82$^\circ$, 60$^\circ$, 47$^\circ$, and 55$^\circ$, respectively. The mean value of the offsets between the envelope magnetic field and the minor axis position angles for the four cores is found to be $\sim60^\circ$. The results obtained from our study on the limited sample of five cores with VeLLOs show that the outflows in three of them tend to nearly align with the envelope magnetic field.

We wish to map the magnetic field geometry and to study the dust properties of the starless cloud, L1570, using multi-wavelength optical polarimetry and photometry of the stars projected on the cloud. We made R-band imaging polarimetry of the stars projected on a cloud, L1570, to trace the magnetic field orientation. We also made multi-wavelength polarimetric and photometric observations to constrain the properties of dust in L1570. We estimated a distance of 394 +/- 70 pc to the cloud using 2MASS JHKs colours. Using the values of the Serkowski parameters namely $σ_{1}$, $\bar ε$, λmax and the position of the stars on near infrared color-color diagram, we identified 13 stars that could possibly have intrinsic polarization and/or rotation in their polarization angles. One star, 2MASS J06075075+1934177, which is a B4Ve spectral type, show the presence of diffuse interstellar bands in the spectrum apart from showing Hα line in emission. There is an indication for the presence of slightly bigger dust grains towards L1570 on the basis of the dust grain size-indicators such as λmax and Rv values. The magnetic field lines are found to be parallel to the cloud structures seen in the 250μm images (also in 8μm and 12μm shadow images) of L1570. Based on the magnetic field geometry, the cloud structure and the complex velocity structure, we believe that L1570 is in the process of formation due to the converging flow material mediated by the magnetic field lines. Structure function analysis showed that in the L1570 cloud region the large scale magnetic fields are stronger when compared with the turbulent component of magnetic fields. The estimated magnetic field strengths suggest that the L1570 cloud region is sub-critical and hence could be strongly supported by the magnetic field lines.

We estimated a distance of $360\pm65$ pc to LBN 437 (also one additional cloud, CB 238) using near-IR photometric method. Foreground contribution to the observed polarisation values was subtracted by making polarimetric observations of stars that are located in the direction of the cloud and with known distances from the Hipparcos parallax measurements. The magnetic field geometry of LBN 437 is found to follow the curved shape of the globule head. This could be due to the drag that the magnetic field lines could have experienced because of the ionisation radiation from the same exciting source that caused the cometary shape of the cloud. The orientation of the outflow from the Herbig A4e star, LkH$α$ 233 (or V375 Lac), located at the head of LBN 437, is found to be parallel to both the initial (prior to the ionising source was turned on) ambient magnetic field (inferred from a star HD 214243 located just in front of the cloud) and the Galactic plane.

Here we examine the evolution of irradiated clouds using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics ({\small SPH}) algorithm coupled with a ray-tracing scheme that calculates the position of the ionisation-front at each timestep. We present results from simulations performed for three choices of {\small IR}-flux spanning the range of fluxes emitted by a typical {\small B}-type star to a cluster of {\small OB}-type stars. The extent of photo-ablation, of course, depends on the strength of the incident flux and a strong flux of {\small IR} severely ablates a {\small MC}. Consequently, the first star-formation sites appear in the dense shocked layer along the edges of the irradiated cloud. Radiation-induced turbulence readily generates dense filamentary structure within the photo-ablated cloud although several new star-forming sites also appear in some of the densest regions at the junctions of these filaments. Prevalent physical conditions within a {\small MC} play a crucial role in determining the mode, i.e., filamentary as compared to isolated pockets, of star-formation, the timescale on which stars form and the distribution of stellar masses. The probability density functions ({\small PDF}s) derived for irradiated clouds in this study are intriguing due to their resemblance with those presented in a recent census of irradiated {\small MC}s. Furthermore, irrespective of the nature of turbulence, the protostellar mass-functions({\small MF}s) derived in this study follow a power-law distribution. When turbulence within the cloud is driven by a relatively strong flux of {\small IR} such as that emitted by a massive {\small O}-type star or a cluster of such stars, the {\small MF} approaches the canonical form due to Salpeter, and even turns-over for protostellar masses smaller than $\sim$0.2 M$_{\odot}$.

Context. Emission and absorption line profiles which are formed in the interaction of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars and their circumstellar environment are found to be variable at various timescales. Aims. We investigate the patterns and timescales of temporal line profile variability in order to explore the dynamical circumstellar environment of the PMS Herbig Ae star V351 Ori. Methods. We obtained 45 high-resolution (R~28,000) spectra of V351 Ori at timescales of hours, days, and months. We analysed the Hαline profiles and also examined the Hβ, NaD1 and NaD2 line profiles to explore the nature of the spectroscopic variability. Results. The Hαline profiles showed strong variations over all timescales. The shape of the profiles changed over timescales of a day. Single as well as simultaneous event(s) of blue-shifted and red-shifted transient absorption components (TACs), i.e. signatures of outflow and infall, were also observed in the Hαline profiles. The shortest period of variation in the TACs was < 1 hour. All transient absorption events were found to decelerate with a rate of a few to fractions of m s-2. The depth and width of the TACs were also changing with time. The presence of elongated red-shifted components at some epochs supports the episodic nature of accretion. Conclusions. Variable emission and absorption components detected in Hαline profiles show the dynamic nature of interaction between V351 Ori and its circumstellar environment. The Hαnon-photospheric profiles of the star most probably originate in the disk wind. Episodic accretion of gaseous material at a slow rate and outflow of clumpy gaseous material are still occurring in V351 Ori at an age of ~6.5 Myr. Dynamic magnetospheric accretion and disk wind emerge as the most satisfactory model for interpreting the observed line profile variations of V351 Ori.

Aims: We aim to develop a method to determine distances to molecular clouds using JHK near-infrared photometry. Methods: The method is based on a technique that aids spectral classification of stars lying towards the fields containing the clouds into main sequence and giants. In this technique, the observed (J-H) and (H-K_s) colours are dereddened simultaneously using trial values of A V and a normal interstellar extinction law. The best fit of the dereddened colours to the intrinsic colours giving a minimum value of Chi^2 then yields the corresponding spectral type and A_V for the star. The main sequence stars, thus classified, are then utilized in an A V versus distance plot to bracket the cloud distances. Results: We applied the method to four clouds, L1517, Chamaeleon I, Lupus 3 and NGC 7023 and estimated their distances as 167+-30, 151+-28, 157+-29 and 408+-76 pc respectively, which are in good agreement with the previous distance estimations available in the literature

Molecular clouds (MCs) are stellar nurseries, however, formation of stars within MCs depends on the ambient physical conditions. MCs, over a free-fall time are exposed to numerous dynamical phenomena, of which, the interaction with a thin, dense shell of gas is but one. Below we present results from self-gravitating, 3-D smoothed particle hydrodynamics ({\small SPH}) simulations of the problem; seven realisations of the problem have been performed by varying the precollision density within the cloud, the nature of the post-collision shock, and the spatial resolution in the computational domain. Irrespective of the type of shock, a complex network of dense filaments, seeded by numerical noise, readily appears in the shocked cloud. Segregation of the dense and rarefied gas phases also manifests itself in a bimodal distribution of gas density. We demonstrate that the power-spectrum for rarefied gas is Kolomogorov like, while that for the denser gas is considerably steeper. As a corollary to the main problem, we also look into the possibly degenerative effect of the {\small SPH} artificial viscosity on the impact of the incident shell. It is observed that stronger viscosity leads to greater post-shock dissipation, that strongly decelerates the incident shock-front and promotes formation of contiguous structure, albeit on a much longer timescale. We conclude that too much viscosity is likely to enhance the proclivity towards gravitational boundedness of structure, leading to unphysical fragmentation. On the other hand, insufficient resolution appears to suppress fragmentation. Convergence of results is tested at both extremes, first by repeating the test case with more than a million particles and then with only half the number of particles in the original test case.

We have investigated the young stellar population in and around SFO 38, one of the massive globules located in the northern part of the Galactic HII region IC 1396, using the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations (3.6 to 24 micron) and followed up with ground based optical photometric and spectroscopic observations. Based on the IRAC and MIPS colors and H-alpha emission we identify ~45 Young Stellar Objects (Classes 0/I/II) and 13 probable Pre Main Sequence candidates. We derive the spectral types (mostly K- and M-type stars), effective temperatures and individual extinction of the relatively bright and optically visible Class II objects. Based on optical photometry and theoretical isochrones, we estimate the spread in stellar ages to be between 1--8 Myr with a median age of 3 Myr and a mass distribution of 0.3--2.2 Msun with a median value around 0.5 Msun. Using the width of the H-alpha emission line measured at 10% peak intensity, we derive the mass accretion rates of individual objects to be between 10^{-10} to 10^{-8} Msun/yr. From the continuum-subtracted H-alpha line image, we find that the H-alpha emission of the globule is not spatially symmetric with respect to the O type ionizing star HD 206267. We clearly detect an enhanced concentration of YSOs closer to the southern rim of SFO~38 and identify an evolutionary sequence of YSOs from the rim to the dense core of the cloud, with most of the Class II objects located at the bright rim. The YSOs appear to be aligned along two different directions towards the O6.5V type star HD 206267 and the B0V type star HD 206773. This is consistent with the Radiation Driven Implosion (RDI) model for triggered star formation. (Abridged)

An analysis of proper motion measurements of the Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) associated with the Cometary Globules (CGs) in the Gum Nebula is presented. While earlier studies based on the radial velocity measurements of the CGs suggested expansion of the system of the CGs, the observed proper motion of the YSOs shows no evidence for expansion. In particular the kinematics of two YSOs embedded in CGs is inconsistent with the supernova explosion of the companion of $ζ$ Pup about 1.5 Myr ago as the cause of the expansion of the CG system. YSOs associated with the CGs share the average proper motion of the member stars of the Vela OB2 association. A few YSOs that have relatively large proper motions are found to show relatively low infrared excesses.

At a distance of 250 pc, MWC 297 is one of the closest, young massive stars (M$_{\star}$ $\sim$10 M$_{\odot}$) to us. Compact continuum emission is detected towards MWC 297 from which we estimate a disk mass (gas+dust) of 0.07 M$_{\odot}$ and a disk radius of $\le$ 80 AU. Our result demonstrates that circumstellar disks can survive around massive stars well into their main sequence phase even after they have become optically visible. Complementing our observations with the data compiled from the literature, we find the submm dust opacity index $β$ to be between 0.1 and 0.3. If the emission is optically thin, the low value of $β$ indicates the presence of relatively large grains in the disk, possibly because of grain growth. We do not detect any CO emission associated with the continuum source. We argue that the $^{13}$CO emission from the disk is likely optically thin, in which case, we derive an upper limit to the gas mass which implies significant depletion of molecular gas in the disk. The mass of this disk and the evolutionary trends observed are similar to those found for intermediate mass Herbig Ae stars and low mass T Tauri stars.

We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being responsible for the cessation of accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also find that the accretion activity in these stars drops substantially by ~ 3 Myr. This is comparable to the timescale in which most intermediate mass stars are thought to lose their inner disks, suggesting that inner disks in intermediate mass stars are dissipated rapidly after the accretion activity has fallen below a certain level. We, further find a relatively tight correlation between strength of the emission line and near-infrared excess due to inner disks in HAeBe stars, indicating that the disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars cannot be entirely passive. We suggest that this correlation can be understood within the frame work of the puffed-up inner rim disk models if the radiation from the accretion shock is also responsible for the disk heating.

We present a detailed study of the post-outburst phase of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori) using optical B,V,R,I and NIR J,H,K photometric and low resolution optical spectroscopic observations. The observations were carried out with the HFOSC, NIRCAM, TIRCAM and NICMOS cameras on the 2m HCT and 1.2m PRL telescopes during the period 2004 Feb-2005 Dec. The optical/NIR observations show a general decline in brightness of the exciting source of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori). Our recent optical images show that V1647 Ori has faded by more than 3 mags since Feb 2004. The optical/NIR photometric data also show a significant variation in the mags (Delta V = 0.78 mag, Delta R = 0.44 mag, Delta I = 0.21 mag, Delta J = 0.24 mag and Delta H = 0.20 mag) of V1647 Ori within a period of one month, which is possibly undergoing a phase similar to eruptive variables, like EXors or FUors. The optical spectra show a few features such as strong Halpha emission with blue-shifted absorption and the CaII IR triplet (8498A, 8542A and 8662A) in emission. As compared to the period just after outburst, there is a decrease in the depth and extent of the blue-shifted absorption component, indicating a weakening in the powerful stellar wind. The presence of the CaII IR triplet in emission confirms that V1647 Ori is a PMS star. The long-term, post-outburst photometric observations of V1647 Ori suggest an EXor, rather than an FUor event. An optical/IR comparison of the region surrounding McNeil's nebula shows that the optical nebula is more widely and predominantly extended to the north, whereas the IR nebula is relatively confined (dia ~ 60 arcsec), but definitely extended, to the south, too.

We have used the velocity dispersion as an age indicator to constrain the ages of a large sample of main sequence Vega-like stars in order to study the lifetimes and temporal evolution of the dust disks around them. We use HIPPARCOS measurements to compute stellar velocities in the sky plane. The velocity dispersion of Vega-like stars is found to be systematically smaller than that of the normal main sequence field stars for all spectral types, suggesting that the main sequence dusty systems, on average, are younger than normal field stars. The debris disks seem to survive longer around late type stars as compared to early type stars. Further, we find a strong correlation between fractional dust luminosity ((f_{d} \equiv L_{dust}/L_{\star})) and velocity dispersion of stars with dust disks. Fractional dust luminosity is found to drop off steadily with increasing stellar age from early pre-main sequence phase to late main sequence phase.

The geometrical relationship between the distribution of circumstellar matter, observed optical linear polarization, outflows and binary orbital plane in Herbig Ae/Be stars is investigated. Optical linear polarization measurements carried out for a number of Herbig Ae/Be stars that are either known to be in binary systems and/or have bipolar jets are presented in this paper. Available information on the position angles of polarization, outflows and binary companions for Herbig Ae/Be stars is compiled and analysed for any possible correlations. In $\approx 85%$ of the sources the outflow position angle is within $30^{\circ}$ of being parallel or perpendicular to the polarization position angle. In $\approx 81%$ of the sources the binary position angle is within $30^{\circ}$ of being parallel or perpendicular to the polarization position angle. Out of 15 sources with bipolar outflows, 10 sources have the binary position angle within $30^{\circ}$ of being perpendicular to the outflow position angle. These results favour those binary formation mechanisms in which the binary components and the disks around individual stars or circumbinary disks are coplanar.

We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far infrared wavelengths. Fractional infrared luminosity $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$ and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than that found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may then represent the youngest examples of Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star as evident from the low $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$, scarcity of circumstellar dust, low polarization, presence of H$α$ emission and near infrared excess and far infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free-free emission similar to other well known classical Be stars.

The Galactic distribution of the high-latitude molecular clouds is considered. It is suggested that the majority of these clouds are clustered in two large shells around the two closest OB associations, Per OB3/Cas-Tau and Sco OB2. The most prominent shell of high-latitude clouds is centred around the Per OB3/ Cas-Tau association which is also at the centre of the Gould's Belt. However, the Per OB3/Cas-Tau group of high-latitude clouds appears as an elliptical shell at nearly right angles to the plane of the Gould's Belt. Its kinematic age (~10 Myr) is much smaller than the expansion age (~35 Myr) of the ring of intertellar matter associated with the Gould's Belt. It is suggested that while, as is generally understood, the larger expanding ring of gas associated with the Gould's Belt was created by stellar winds and supernova explosions of the more massive OB stars of the Per OB3/Cas-Tau association ~35 Myr ago, the Per OB3 shell of high-latitude clouds was formed from the back-falling gas as it was swept up by a more recent supernova explosion of an early B type star in Per OB3 ~10 Myr ago. More distant OB associations also produce similar shells of clouds at large heights from the Galactic plane having relatively smaller angular sizes due to their greater distances. These can be seen as higher latitude extensions of cloud complexes at lower Galactic latitudes as, for example, in the case of Vela OB2.

Abstract:
Optical linear polarization measurements are presented for about 30 Vega-like stars. These are then compared with the polarization observed for normal field stars. A significant fraction of the Vega-like stars are found to show polarization much in excess of that expected to be due to interstellar matter along the line of sight to the star. The excess polarization must be intrinsic to the star,…

A significant fraction of the Vega-like stars are found to show polarization much in excess of that expected to be due to interstellar matter along the line of sight to the star. The excess polarization must be intrinsic to the star, caused by circumstellar scattering material that is distributed in a flattened disk. A correlation between infrared excess and optical polarization is found for the Vega-like stars.

The evolution of a protostellar binary system is investigated while it is embedded in its parent molecular cloud core and acted upon by gas drag due to dynamical friction. Approximate analytical results are obtained for the energy and angular momentum evolution of the orbit in the limiting cases, where the velocity is much smaller than, and much larger than the velocity dispersion of the gas. The general case is solved numerically. Dissipation causes a decay of the orbit to smaller separations and orbital eccentricity increases with time. As a binary probably spends about a few $10^6$ years embedded in the cloud, significant evolution of the orbit is expected before the dispersal of the cloud. Binary populations have been statistically generated and evolved for comparison with observations of MS and PMS binaries. Dynamical friction changes the initial frequency distribution with period of the binaries, and a maximum is obtained in the distribution as seen observationally. Decay of the orbit due to gas drag causes an evolution of long-period orbits to shorter periods and thus enables the formation of close binaries.
