Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering is used to study spin wave excitations in the fully polarized state of the frustrated quantum ferro-antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The data analysis is based on a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian that includes as many distinct nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor interactions as allowed by crystal symmetry. All 8 such exchange constants are obtained in a simultaneous fit to over 150 scans across the dispersion manifold. This establishes a definitive quantitative model of this material. It turns out to be substantially different from the one assumed in numerous previous studies based on powder experiments.

Magnetization, magnetocaloric, calorimetric, neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on single crystals of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The low-temperature crystal structure is found to be of a lower symmetry than previously assumed. The result is a more complicated model spin Hamiltonian, which we infer from measurements of the spin wave dispersion spectrum. The main finding is a novel spin state which emerges in high magnetic fields after antiferromagnetic order is terminated at $H_{c1}\simeq 4.0$ T. It is a distinct thermodynamic phase with a well-defined phase boundary at $H_{c2}\simeq 6.5$ T and is clearly separate from the fully saturated phase. Yet, it shows no conventional (dipolar) magnetic long range order. We argue that it is fully consistent with the expectations for a quantum bond-nematic state.

Abstract:
The $S=1/2$ spin ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) is studied by means of high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. In agreement with previous studies we find a band of triplet excitations with a spin gap of $\sim0.8$~meV and a bandwidth of $\sim0.6$~meV. In addition, we observe a distinct splitting of the triplet band of $50(1)$~$μ$eV or $40(2)$~$μ$eV at the band minimum or…

In addition, we observe a distinct splitting of the triplet band of $50(1)$~$μ$eV or $40(2)$~$μ$eV at the band minimum or maximum, respectively. By comparison to a strong coupling expansion calculation of the triplet dispersion for a spin ladder with anisotropic exchange, weakly anisotropic leg interactions are identified as the dominant source of magnetic anisotropy in BPCB. Based on these results, we discuss the nature of magnetic exchange anisotropy in BPCB and in related transition-metal insulators.

We report the magnetic and calorimetric measurements in single crystal samples of the square lattice $J_{1}-J_{2}$ quantum antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. An investigation of the scaling of magnetization reveals a "dimensionality reduction" indicative of a strong degree of geometric frustration. Below a characteristic temperature of $T^{\ast}\simeq150$~mK we observe the emergence of an additional strongly fluctuating quantum phase close to full magnetic saturation. It is separated from the magnetically ordered state by first- and second-order phase transitions, depending on the orientation of the applied magnetic field. We suggest that this phase may indeed be related to the theoretically predicted spin-nematic state.

By means of inelastic neutron scattering we investigate finite temperature dynamics in the quantum spin ladder compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) near the magnetic field induced quantum critical point with dynamical exponent $z=2$. We observe universal finite-temperature scaling of the transverse local dynamic structure factor in spectacular quantitative agreement with long-standing theoretical predictions. At the same time, already at rather low temperatures, we observe strong non-universal longitudinal fluctuations. To separate the two, we make use of an intrinsic leg-exchange symmetry of the spin ladder. Complementary measurements of specific heat also reveal striking scaling behavior near the quantum critical point.

We introduce a microscopic model aimed at describing the behavior of fermionic excitations in the background of a magnetic texture called "spin-vortex checkerboard". This texture was proposed previously as a possible alternative to stripes to interpret the experimental phenomenology of spin and charge modulations in 1/8-doped lanthanum cuprates. The model involves two kinds of interacting fermionic excitations residing in spin-rich and spin-poor regions of the modulated structure. It is a generalization of another model developed earlier for the so-called "grid checkerboard". The principal terms of our model describe the decay of fermionic pairs belonging to spin-poor regions into single fermions occupying spin-rich regions and vice versa. These terms induce intricate fermionic correlations throughout the system but fall short of inducing superconductivity unless arbitrarily small hop** terms are added to the model Hamiltonian. We present the mean-field solution of the model, including, in particular, the temperature dependence of the energy gap. The latter is found to be in a good overall agreement with available experimental data for high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors.
