We present the results of a thorough study of the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of a ludwigite crystal Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60 - 350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (92 K), capacity possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of capacity is observed in the temperature range of 95 - 160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The magnetocaloric effect (i.e. the adiabatic temperature change) was assessed through a direct measurement or an indirect method using the capacity data. Owing to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, an anisotropic MCE or the rotating MCE is observed in Cu2MnBO5. A deep minimum in the rotating MCE near the TC is observed and may be associated with the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility.

It has been found that the thermal conductivity is nearly isotropic and very large in zero field and that the thermal conductivity due to phonons is dominant in CuB2O4. The temperature and field dependences of kc and k110 have markedly changed at phase boundaries in the magnetic phase diagram, which has been understood to be due to the change of the mean free path of phonons caused by the change of the phonon-spin scattering rate at the phase boundaries. It has been concluded that thermal conductivity measurements are very effective for detecting magnetic phase boundaries.

Excitation of four coherent phonon modes of different symmetries has been realized in copper metaborate CuB$_2$O$_4$ via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). Phonons were detected by monitoring changes in the linear optical birefringence using the balanced-detection (BD) technique. We compare the results of BD-ISRS experiment to the polarized spontaneous Raman scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between the two sets of data obtained by these allied techniques in a wide phonon frequencies range of 4-14 THz can be achieved by rigorously taking into account the symmetry of the phonon modes, and the corresponding excitation and detection selection rules. It is also important to account for the difference between incoherent and coherent phonons in terms of their contributions to the Raman scattering process. This comparative analysis highlights the importance of the ratio between the frequency of a particular mode, and the pump and probe spectral widths. We demonstrate analytically that the pump and probe pulse durations of 90 and 50 fs, respectively, used in our experiments, limit the highest frequency of the excited and detected coherent phonon modes to 12 THz, and define their relative amplitudes.

Electric manipulation of magnetic properties is a key problem of materials research. To fulfil the requirements of modern electronics, these processes must be shifted to high frequencies. In multiferroic materials this may be achieved by electric and magnetic control of their fundamental excitations. Here we identify magnetic vibrations in multiferroic iron-borates which are simultaneously sensitive to external electric and magnetic fields. Nearly 100% modulation of the terahertz radiation in an external field is demonstrated for SmFe3(BO3)4. High sensitivity can be explained by a modification of the spin orientation which controls the excitation conditions in multiferroic borates. These experiments demonstrate the possibility to alter terahertz magnetic properties of materials independently by external electric and magnetic fields.

Crystal field (CF) transitions within the ground multiplet 3H6 of Tm3+ ions are observed and they are identified as magnetic-dipole transitions from the ground singlet A1 to the next excited doublet E of Tm3+ ions. Unexpected fine structure of the transitions is detected at low temperatures. The new modes are assigned to local distortions of the sites with D3 symmetry by Bi3+ impurities, which resulted in the splitting of A1 -> E transition. Two types of locally distorted sites are identified and investigated. The main contribution to the static magnetic susceptibility is shown to be determined by the matrix elements of the observed magnetic transitions. We demonstrate that even in case of local distortions the symmetry of the undistorted crystal is recovered for magnetic and for quadratic magnetoelectric susceptibilities.

In contrast to well studied multiferroic manganites with a spiral structure, the electric polarization in multiferroic borates is induced within collinear antiferromagnetic structure and can easily be switched by small static fields. Because of specific symmetry conditions, static and dynamic properties in borates are directly connected, which leads to giant magnetoelectric and magnetodielectric effects. Here we prove experimentally that the giant magnetodielectric effect in samarium ferroborate SmFe3(BO3)4 is of intrinsic origin and is caused by an unusually large electromagnon situated in the microwave range. This electromagnon reveals strong optical activity exceeding 120 degrees of polarization rotation in a millimeter thick sample.

We report on the thermodynamic, magnetic properties and the magnetic structure of ludwigite-type Cu2MnBO5. The specific heat, the low-field magnetization and the paramagnetic susceptibility were studied on a single crystal and combined with powder neutron diffraction data. The temperature dependence of the specific heat and the neutron diffraction pattern reveal a single magnetic phase transition at T=92 K, which corresponds to the magnetic ordering into a ferromagnetic phase. The cation distribution and the values and directions of magnetic moments of ions in different crystallographic sites are established. The magnetic moments of Cu2+ and Mn3+ ions occupying different magnetic sites in the ferrimagnetic phase are pairwise antiparallel and their directions do not coincide with the directions of the principal crystallographic axes. The small value of the magnetic moment of copper ions occupying site 2a is indicative of partial disordering of the magnetic moments on this site. The magnetization measurements show a strong temperature hysteresis of magnetization, which evidences for field-dependent transitions below the phase transition temperature.

The effect was observed in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of a multiferroic easy-axis antiferromagnet $PrFe_3(BO_3)_4$ in magnetic fields $\textbf{B}_{ext}||c$. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the base of the equation derived in the frame of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant $|W| = 14.8 cm^{-1}$.

Many technological applications are based on electric or magnetic order of materials, for instance magnetic memory. Multiferroics are materials which exhibit electric and magnetic order simultaneously. Due to the coupling of electric and magnetic effects, these materials show a strong potential to control electricity and magnetism and, more generally, the properties and propagation of light. One of the most fascinating and counter-intuitive recent results in multiferroics is directional anisotropy, the asymmetry of light propagation with respect to the direction of propagation. The absorption in the material can be different for forward and backward propagation of light, which in extreme case may lead to complete suppression of absorption in one direction. Another remarkable effect in multiferroics is directional birefringence, i.e. different velocities of light for different directions of propagation. In this paper, we demonstrate giant directional birefringence in a multiferroic samarium ferroborate. The effect is easily observed for linear polarization of light in the range of millimeter-wavelengths, and survives down to very low frequencies. The dispersion and absorption close to the electromagnon resonance can be controlled and fully suppressed in one direction. Therefore, samarium ferroborate is a universal tool for optical control: with a magnetic field as an external parameter it allows switching between two functionalities: polarization rotation and directional anisotropy.

Magnetic properties of heterometallic warwickites $MgFeBO_4$, $Mg_{0.5}Co_{0.5}FeBO_4$, and $CoFeBO_4$ are presented, highlighting the effect of Co substitution on the magnetic properties of these compounds. The analysis of magnetization and heat capacity data has shown that these compounds exhibit a spin-glass transition below $T_{SG}$=10, 20 and 22 K, respectively. Using zero field ac susceptibility as entanglement witness we find that the low dimensional magnetic behavior above $T_{SG}$ show quantum entanglement behavior $χ(T)\varpropto T^{-α(T)}$ up to $T_E$ = 130K. The $α$ parameters have been deduced as a function of temperature and Co, indicating the existence of random singlet phase in this temperature region. Above $T_E$ the paramagnetism is interpreted in terms of non-entangled spins giving rise to Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. The different intra- and inter-ribbon exchange interaction pathways have been calculated within a simple indirect coupling model. It is determined that the triangular motifs in the warwickite structure, together with the competing interactions, induce frustration. The spin-glass character is explained in terms of the substitutional disorder of the Mg, Fe and Co atoms at the two available crystallographic sites, and the frustration induced by the competing interactions. The Co substitution induces uniaxial anisotropy along the b axis, increases the absolute magnetization and increases the spin-glass freezing temperature. The entanglement behavior is supported in the intermediate phase irrespective of the introduction of anisotropy by the Co substitution.

Our high-resolution measurements reveal A coexistence of two different magnetic phases, which can be triggered effectively by external electric fields. More in detail, the volume fraction of the collinear magnetic phase is found to strongly increase at the expense of helically ordered regions when an electric field is applied. These results confirm that the collinear magnetic phase is responsible for the ferroelectric polarization of NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and, more importantly, demonstrate that magnetic phase coexistence provides an alternative route towards materials with a strong magnetoelectric response.

The space and time symmetry breaking at magnetic phase transitions in multiferroics results in a number of strongly pronounced optical effects. Our high-resolution spectroscopic study of 3d- excitons in a complex multi-sublattice magnetoelectric CuB2O4 demonstrates that, among those, a large antiferromagnetic linear dichroism is observed which is highly sublattice-sensitive to subtle changes in the spin subsystems. We prove that the discovered linear dichroism is related microscopically to the magnetic Davydov splitting of the exciton states. We announce a novel magnetic phase transition and argue that an elliptical spiral structure rather than a simple circular helix is realized in the incommensurate phase, these findings being overlooked in previous studies by optical and other techniques. We claim that this spectroscopic method can be effectively applied to other materials for revealing hidden features of magnetic structures and phase transitions.

The reststrahlen band corresponding to the A2 symmetry nondegenerate phonon mode near 50 cm-1 (1.5 THz) splits into two bands at about 100 K, well above TN = 32 K. These bands shift and narrow progressively with further lowering the temperature, demonstrating pronounced peculiarities at TN. The observed effects were explained by an interaction of the A2 phonon mode with the 4f crystal-field electronic excitation of Pr3+ whose frequency falls into the TO - LO frequency region of the phonon mode. Inversion of the TO and LO frequencies for the electronic excitation and a formation of coupled electron-phonon modes are discussed. Fitting of the TO frequency vs temperature experimental plots by theoretical curves revealed the value 14.6 cm-1 for the electron-phonon coupling constant.

We report the low-temperature coexistence in NdFe3(BO3)4 of an incommensurate magnetic phase with a strained commensurate magnetic phase that is primarily at the surface of the crystal. Increasing the temperature or magnetic field decreases the incommensurability and stabilizes the commensurate magnetic phase above Tic ~14 K or Hic = 0.9 T. A comparison to published studies indicates the onset of longitudinal magnetostriction and electric polarization at the magnetic-field-induced transition, which may arise due to a basal plane spin-flop and canting of the moments along the field direction.

We present an element selective resonant magnetic x-ray scattering study of NdFe3(BO3)4 as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. Our measurements show that the magnetic order of the Nd sublattice is induced by the Fe spin order. When a magnetic field is applied parallel to the hexagonal basal plane, the helicoidal spin order is suppressed and a collinear ordering, where the moments are forced to align in a direction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field, is stabilized. This result excludes a non-collinear spin order as the origin of the magnetically induced electric polarization in this compound. Instead our data imply that magnetic frustration results in a phase competition, which is the origin of the magneto-electric response.

In the temperature range, in which an incommensurate phase exists with the formation of a long-period antiferromagnetic helix, the strongly pronounced jumps in the field dependence of birefringence are revealed and identified as a firstorder spin-orientation phase transition. The phase transition was accompanied by a hysteresis in the field dependences of birefringence. The $H-T$ phase diagram for a $NdFe_3(BO_3)_4$ single crystal has been plotted in the case where the magnetic field is oriented along the crystal axis $C_2$ ($H\|C_2$).

We show a systematic increase of the magnetoelectric effect with decreasing magnetic anisotropy of the rare earth moment. A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in the magnetically (nearly) isotropic $HoAl_3(BO_3)_4$. The polarization value in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 $μC/m^2$ which is significantly higher than reported values for the field-induced polarization of linear magnetoelectric or even multiferroic compounds. The results indicate a very strong coupling of the f-moments to the lattice. They further indicate the importance of the field-induced ionic displacements in the unit cell resulting in a polar distortion and a change in symmetry on a microscopic scale. The system $RAl_3(BO_3)_4$ could be interesting for the technological utilization of the high-field magnetoelectric effect.

Hard x-ray scattering (HXS) experiments with a photon energy of 100keV were performed as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field on selected compounds of the RFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ family. The results show the presence of several unexpected diffraction features, in particular non-resonant magnetic reflections in the magnetically ordered phase, and structural reflections that violate the diffraction conditions for the low temperature phase $P3_121$ of the rare-earth iron borates. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic superlattice reflections corroborate the magnetic structures of the borate compounds obtained by neutron diffraction. The detailed analysis of the intensity and scattering cross section of the magnetic reflection reveals details of the magnetic structure of these materials such as the spin domain structure of NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and GdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. Furthermore we find that the correlation length of the magnetic domains is around 100 Å for all the compounds and that the Fe moments are rotated $53^\circ\pm3^\circ$ off from the hexagonal basal plane in GdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$

The magnetic properties, the magnetostriction, and the magnetoelectric effect in the d-electron free rare-earth aluminum borate TmAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated between room temperature and 2 K. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a strong anisotropy with the hexagonal c-axis as the hard magnetic axis. Magnetostriction measurements show a large effect of an in-plane field reducing both, the a- and c-axis lattice parameters. The magnetoelectric polarization change in a- and c-directions reaches up to 300 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 70 kOe with the field applied along the a-axis. The magnetoelectric polarization is proportional to the lattice contraction in magnetic field. The results of this investigation prove the existence of a significant coupling between the rare earth magnetic moment and the lattice in $R$Al$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ compounds ($R$ = rare earth). They further show that the rare earth moment itself will generate a large magnetoelectric effect which makes it easier to study and to understand the origin of the magnetoelectric interaction in this class of materials.

The thermodynamic, magnetic, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties of HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated. Both compounds show a second order Neél transition above 30 K and a first order spin reorientation transition below 10 K. HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ develops a spontaneous electrical polarization below the Neél temperature (T$_N$) which is diminished in external magnetic fields. No magnetoelectric effect could be observed in HoFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. In contrast, the solid solution Ho$_{0.5}$Nd$_{0.5}$Fe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ exhibits both, a spontaneous polarization below T$_N$ and a magnetoelectric effect at higher fields that extends to high temperatures. The superposition of spontaneous polarization, induced by the internal magnetic field in the ordered state, and the magnetoelectric polarizations due to the external field results in a complex behavior of the total polarization measured as a function of temperature and field.

We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)4. Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd LII,III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at TN ~ 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below TN, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T ~ 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at TSR ~ 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated ~45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

We have studied the thermodynamic properties of single-crystalline TbFe3(BO3)4. Magnetization measurements have been carried out as a function of magnetic field (up to 50 T) and temperature up to 350K with the magnetic field both parallel and perpendicular to the trigonal c-axis of the crystal. The specific heat has been measured in the temperature range 2-300K with a magnetic field up to 9 T applied parallel to the c-axis. The data indicate a structural phase transition at 192 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at 40 K. A Schottky anomaly is present in the specific heat data around 20 K, arising due to two low-lying energy levels of the Tb3+ ions being split by f-d coupling. Below TN magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis drive a spin-flop phase transition, which is associated with a large magnetization jump. The highly anisotropic character of the magnetic susceptibility is ascribed mainly to the Ising-like behavior of the Tb3+ ions in the trigonal crystal field. We describe our results in the framework of an unified approach which is based on mean-field approximation and crystal-field calculations.

We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)4 trigonal single crystal which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering TN = 33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g-factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular) = 2.385, g(parallel) = 1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain Bloc=7.88 T and |JFN|= 0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd - Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm-1. To check reliability of our set of crystal field parameters we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions Jnn = -6.25 K (intra-chain interactions) and Jnnn = -1.92 K (inter-chain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

It has been found that neodymium iron borate, as well as gadolinium iron borate, is a multiferroic. It has much larger (above 3 10^(-4) C/m^2) electric polarization controlled by the magnetic field and giant quadratic magnetoelectric effect. The exchange field between the rare-earth and iron subsystems (~50 kOe) has been determined for the first time from experimental data. The theoretical analysis based on the magnetic symmetry and quantum properties of the Nd ion in the crystal provides an explanation of an unusual behavior of the magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic properties of neodymium iron borate in strong magnetic fields and correlation observed between them.

Inelastic light scattering spectra of several members of the RFe3(BO3)4 family reveal a cascade of phase transitions as a function of temperature, starting with a structural, weakly first order, phase transition followed by two magnetic phase transitions. Those consist of the ordering of the Fe-spin sublattice revealed by all the compound, and a subsequent spin-reorientational transition for GdFe3(BO3)4. The Raman data evidence a strong coupling between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom in these borates. The Fe-sublattice ordering leads to a strong suppression of the low energy magnetic scattering, and a multiple peaked two-magnon scattering continuum is observed. Evidence for short-range correlations is found in the `paramagnetic' phase by the observation of a broad magnetic continuum in the Raman data, which persists up to surprisingly high temperatures.

The spin rotation phase transition is proven to be of the first-order nature through the magnetic analogue of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation.
