We prove the long-standing conjecture regarding the existence of infinitely many high-frequency modulational instability ``isolas" for a Stokes wave in arbitrary depth $ \mathtt{h} > 0 $, subject to longitudinal perturbations. We completely describe the spectral bands with non-zero real part away from the origin of the $L^2(\mathbb{R})$-spectrum of the water waves system linearized at a Stokes waves of small amplitude $ ε> 0 $. The unstable spectrum is the union of isolas of elliptical shape, parameterized by integers $ \mathtt{p}\geq 2 $, with semiaxis of size $ |β_1^{(\mathtt{p})} (\mathtt{h})| ε^\mathtt{p}+ O(ε^{\mathtt{p}+1} )$ where $β_1^{( \mathtt{p})} (\mathtt{h})$ is a nonzero analytic function of the depth $ \mathtt{h} $ that depends on the Taylor coefficients of the Stokes waves up to order $\mathtt{p}$.

This result is obtained by reducing the Klein-Gordon equation to a diagonal constant coefficient system with purely imaginary eigenvalues. The main difficulty is the presence in the perturbation $ Q (ωt) $ of the second order differential operator $ a^{(2)}(ωt, x)\partial_{xx} $. In suitable coordinates the Klein-Gordon equation is the composition of two backward/forward quasi-periodic in time perturbed transport equations with non-constant coefficients, up to lower order pseudo-differential remainders. A key idea is to straighten this first order pseudo-differential operator with bi-characteristics through a novel quantitative Egorov analysis.

We prove high-frequency modulational instability of small-amplitude Stokes waves in deep water under longitudinal perturbations, providing the first isola of unstable eigenvalues branching off from $\mathtt{i}\frac34$. Unlike the finite depth case this is a degenerate problem and the real part of the unstable eigenvalues has a much smaller size than in finite depth. By a symplectic version of Kato theory we reduce to search the eigenvalues of a $2\times 2$ Hamiltonian and reversible matrix which has eigenvalues with non-zero real part if and only if a certain analytic function is not identically zero. In deep water we prove that the Taylor coefficients up to order three of this function vanish, but not the fourth-order one.

In this paper we paralinearize the contour dynamics equation for sharp-fronts of $α$-SQG, for any $ α\in (0,1) \cup (1,2) $, close to a circular vortex. This turns out to be a quasi-linear Hamiltonian PDE. After deriving the asymptotic expansion of the linear frequencies of oscillations at the vortex disk and verifying the absence of three wave interactions, we prove that, in the most singular cases $ α\in (1,2) $, any initial vortex patch which is $ \varepsilon $-close to the disk exists for a time interval of size at least $ \sim \varepsilon^{-2} $. This quadratic lifespan result relies on a paradifferential Birkhoff normal form reduction and exploits cancellations arising from the Hamiltonian nature of the equation. This is the first normal form long time existence result of sharp fronts.

We present a comprehensive set of forecasts for the cross-correlation signal between 21cm intensity map** and galaxy redshift surveys. We focus on the data sets that will be provided by the SKAO for the 21cm signal, DESI and Euclid for galaxy clustering. We build a likelihood which takes into account the effect of the beam for the radio observations, the Alcock-Paczynski effect, a simple parameterization of astrophysical nuisances, and fully exploit the tomographic power of such observations in the range $z=0.7-1.8$ at linear and mildly non-linear scales ($k<0.25 h/$Mpc). The forecasted constraints, obtained with Monte Carlo Markov Chains techniques in a Bayesian framework, in terms of the six base parameters of the standard $Λ$CDM model, are promising. The predicted signal-to-noise ratio for the cross-correlation can reach $\sim 50$ for $z\sim 1$ and $k\sim 0.1 h/$ Mpc. When the cross-correlation signal is combined with current Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from Planck, the error bar on $Ω_{\rm c}\,h^2$ and $H_0$ is reduced by a factor 3 and 6, respectively, compared to CMB only data, due to the measurement of matter clustering provided by the two observables. The cross-correlation signal has a constraining power that is comparable to the auto-correlation one and combining all the clustering measurements a sub-percent error bar of 0.33% on $H_0$ can be achieved, which is about a factor 2 better than CMB only measurement. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we test the full pipeline on the real data measured by the MeerKat collaboration (Cunnington et al. 2022) presenting some (weak) constraints on cosmological parameters.

The current standard cosmological model is constructed within the framework of general relativity with a cosmological constant $Λ$, which is often associated with dark energy, and phenomenologically explains the accelerated cosmic expansion. Understanding the nature of dark energy is one of the most appealing questions in achieving a self-consistent physical model at cosmological scales. Modification of general relativity could potentially provide a more natural and physical solution to the accelerated expansion. The growth of the cosmic structure is sensitive in constraining gravity models. In this paper, we aim to provide a concise introductory review of modified gravity models from an observational point of view. We will discuss various mainstream cosmological observables, and their potential advantages and limitations as probes of gravity models.

This paper fully answers a long standing open question concerning the stability/instability of pure gravity periodic traveling water waves -- called Stokes waves -- at the critical Whitham-Benjamin depth $ \mathtt{h}_{\scriptscriptstyle WB} = 1.363... $ and nearby values. We prove that Stokes waves of small amplitude $ \mathcal{O}( ε) $ are, at the critical depth $ \mathtt{h}_{\scriptscriptstyle WB} $, linearly unstable under long wave perturbations. This is also true for slightly smaller values of the depth $ \mathtt{h} > \mathtt{h}_{\scriptscriptstyle WB} - c ε^2 $, $ c > 0 $, depending on the amplitude of the wave. This problem was not rigorously solved in previous literature because the expansions degenerate at the critical depth. In order to resolve this degenerate case, and describe in a mathematically exhaustive way how the eigenvalues change their stable-to-unstable nature along this shallow-to-deep water transient, we Taylor expand the computations of arXiv:2204.00809v2 at a higher degree of accuracy, derived by the fourth order expansion of the Stokes waves. We prove that also in this transient regime a pair of unstable eigenvalues depict a closed figure "8", of smaller size than for $ \mathtt{h} > \mathtt{h}_{\scriptscriptstyle WB} $, as the Floquet exponent varies.

We construct an infinite-dimensional family of smooth integrable magnetic systems on the two-torus which are Zoll, meaning that all the unit-speed magnetic geodesics are periodic. The metric and the magnetic field of such systems are arbitrarily close to the flat metric and to a given constant magnetic field. This extends to the magnetic setting a famous result by Guillemin on the two-sphere. We characterize Zoll magnetic systems as zeros of a suitable action functional $S$, and then look for its zeros by means of a Nash-Moser implicit function theorem. This requires showing the right-invertibility of the linearized operator $\mathrm{d} S$ in a neighborhood of the flat metric and constant magnetic field, and establishing tame estimates for the right inverse. As key step we prove the invertibility of the normal operator $\mathrm{d} S\circ \mathrm{d} S^*$ which, unlike in Guillemin's case, is pseudo-differential only at the highest order. We overcome this difficulty noting that, by the asymptotic properties of Bessel functions, the lower order expansion of $\mathrm{d} S \circ \mathrm{d}S^*$ is a sum of Fourier integral operators. We then use a resolvent identity decomposition which reduces the problem to the invertibility of $\mathrm{d} S \circ \mathrm{d} S^*$ restricted to the subspace of functions corresponding to high Fourier modes. The inversion of such a restricted operator is finally achieved by making the crucial observation that lower order Fourier integral operators satisfy asymmetric tame estimates.

From these magnitude-limited mocks we select mock luminous red galaxy (LRG) samples according to the $(r-z)$-based (optical) and $(r-W1)$-based (infrared) selection criteria for the LRG sample of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Survey. Our models reproduce the number densities, luminosity functions, color distributions, and projected clustering of the DESI Legacy Surveys that are the basis for DESI LRG target selection. We predict the halo occupation statistics of both optical and IR DESI LRGs at fixed cosmology, and assess the differences between the two LRG samples. We find that IR-based SHAM modeling represents the differences between the optical and IR LRG populations better than using the $z$-band, and that age distribution matching overpredicts the clustering of LRGs, implying that galaxy color is uncorrelated with halo age in the LRG regime. Both the optical and IR DESI LRG target selections exclude some of the most luminous galaxies that would appear to be LRGs based on their position on the red sequence in optical color-magnitude space. Both selections also yield populations with a non-trivial LRG-halo connection that does not reach unity for the most massive halos. We find the IR selection achieves greater completeness ($\gtrsim 90\%$) than the optical selection across all redshift bins studied.

We prove an almost global in time existence result of small amplitude space periodic solutions of the 1D gravity-capillary water waves equations with constant vorticity. The result holds for any value of gravity, vorticity and depth and any surface tension belonging to a full measure set. The proof demands a Hamiltonian paradifferential Birkhoff normal form reduction for quasi-linear PDEs in presence of resonant wave interactions: the normal form may be not integrable but it preserves the Sobolev norms thanks to its Hamiltonian nature. A major difficulty is that usual paradifferential calculus used to prove local well posedness (as the celebrated Alinhac good unknown) does not preserve the Hamiltonian structure. A major novelty of this paper is to develop an algorithmic perturbative procedure à la Darboux to correct usual paradifferential transformations to symplectic maps, up to an arbitrary degree of homogeneity. The symplectic correctors turn out to be smoothing perturbations of the identity, and therefore only slightly modify the paradifferential structure of the equations. The Darboux procedure which recovers the nonlinear Hamiltonian structure is written in an abstract functional setting, in order to be applicable also in other contexts.

In a General Relativistic framework, Gravitational Waves (GW) and Electromagnetic (EM) waves are expected to respond in the same way to the effects of matter perturbations between the emitter and the observer. A different behaviour might be a signature of alternative theories of gravity. In this work we study the cross-correlation of resolved GW events (from compact objects mergers detected by the Einstein Telescope, either assuming or excluding the detection of an EM counterpart) and EM signals (coming both from the Intensity Map** of the neutral hydrogen distribution and resolved galaxies from the SKA Observatory), considering weak lensing, angular clustering and their cross term ($\mathrm{L \times C}$) as observable probes. Cross-correlations of these effects are expected to provide promising information on the behaviour of these two observables, hopefully shedding light on beyond GR signatures. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis with the aim of constraining the $\{μ_0,η_0,Σ_0\}$ parameters, either opening or kee** fixed the background parameters $\{w_0,w_a\}$. We find that, although lensing-only forecasts provide significantly unconstrained results, the combination with angular clustering and the cross-correlation of all three considered tracers (GW, IM, resolved galaxies) leads to interesting and competitive constraints. This offers a novel and alternative path to both multi-tracing opportunities for Cosmology and the Modified Gravity sector.

The measurement of the large scale distribution of neutral hydrogen in the late Universe, obtained with radio telescopes through the hydrogen 21cm line emission, has the potential to become a key cosmological probe in the upcoming years. We explore the constraining power of 21cm intensity map** observations on the full set of cosmological parameters that describe the $Λ$CDM model. We assume a single-dish survey for the SKA Observatory and simulate the 21cm linear power spectrum monopole and quadrupole within six redshift bins in the range $z=0.25-3$. Forecasted constraints are computed numerically through Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques. We extend the sampler \texttt{CosmoMC} by implementing the likelihood function for the 21cm power spectrum multipoles. We assess the constraining power of the mock data set alone and combined with Planck 2018 CMB observations. We include a discussion on the impact of extending measurements to non-linear scales in our analysis. We find that 21cm multipoles observations alone are enough to obtain constraints on the cosmological parameters comparable with other probes. Combining the 21cm data set with CMB observations results in significantly reduced errors on all the cosmological parameters. The strongest effect is on $Ω_ch^2$ and $H_0$, for which the error is reduced by almost a factor four. The percentage errors we estimate are $σ_{Ω_ch^2} = 0.25\%$ and $σ_{H_0} = 0.16\%$, to be compared with the Planck only results $σ_{Ω_ch^2} = 0.99\%$ and $σ_{H_0} = 0.79\%$. We conclude that 21cm SKAO observations will provide a competitive cosmological probe, complementary to CMB and, thus, pivotal for gaining statistical significance on the cosmological parameters constraints, allowing a stress test for the current cosmological model.

Whitham and Benjamin predicted in 1967 that small-amplitude periodic traveling Stokes waves of the 2d-gravity water waves equations are linearly unstable with respect to long-wave perturbations, if the depth $\mathtt h$ is larger than a critical threshold $\mathtt h_{WB} \approx 1.363$. In this paper we completely describe, for any value of $\mathtt h > 0$, the four eigenvalues close to zero of the linearized equations at the Stokes wave, as the Floquet exponent $μ$ is turned on. We prove in particular the existence of a unique depth $\mathtt h_{WB}$, which coincides with the one predicted by Whitham and Benjamin, such that, for any $0 < \mathtt h < \mathtt h_{WB}$, the eigenvalues close to zero remain purely imaginary and, for any $\mathtt h > \mathtt h_{WB}$, a pair of non-purely imaginary eigenvalues depicts a closed figure "8", parameterized by the Floquet exponent. As $\mathtt h \to \mathtt h_{WB}^+$ this figure "8" collapses to the origin of the complex plane. The proof combines a symplectic version of Kato's perturbative theory to compute the eigenvalues of a $4 \times 4$ Hamiltonian and reversible matrix, and KAM inspired transformations to block-diagonalize it. The four eigenvalues have all the same size $O(μ)$ - unlike the infinitely deep water case in [6]- and the correct Benjamin-Feir phenomenon appears only after one non-perturbative block-diagonalization step. In addition one has to track, along the whole proof, the explicit dependence of the entries of the $4 \times 4$ reduced matrix with respect to the depth $\mathtt h$.

We prove the existence of time quasi-periodic vortex patch solutions of the 2$d$-Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$, close to uniformly rotating Kirchhoff elliptical vortices, with aspect ratios belonging to a set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure. The problem is reformulated into a quasi-linear Hamiltonian equation for a radial displacement from the ellipse. A major difficulty of the KAM proof is the presence of a zero normal mode frequency, which is due to the conservation of the angular momentum. The key novelty to overcome this degeneracy is to perform a perturbative symplectic reduction of the angular momentum, introducing it as a symplectic variable in the spirit of the Darboux-Carathéodory theorem of symplectic rectification, valid in finite dimension. This approach is particularly delicate in a infinite dimensional phase space: our symplectic change of variables is a nonlinear modification of the transport flow generated by the angular momentum itself. This is the first time such an idea is implemented in KAM for PDEs. Other difficulties are the lack of rotational symmetry of the equation and the presence of hyperbolic/elliptic normal modes. The latter difficulties -- as well as the degeneracy of a normal frequency -- are absent in other vortex patches problems which have been recently studied using the formulation introduced in this paper.

Small-amplitude, traveling, space periodic solutions -- called Stokes waves -- of the 2 dimensional gravity water waves equations in deep water are linearly unstable with respect to long-wave perturbations, as predicted by Benjamin and Feir in 1967. We completely describe the behavior of the four eigenvalues close to zero of the linearized equations at the Stokes wave, as the Floquet exponent is turned on. We prove in particular the conjecture that a pair of non-purely imaginary eigenvalues depicts a closed figure eight, parameterized by the Floquet exponent, in full agreement with numerical simulations. Our new spectral approach to the Benjamin-Feir instability phenomenon uses Kato's theory of similarity transformation to reduce the problem to determine the eigenvalues of a $ 4 \times 4 $ complex Hamiltonian and reversible matrix. Applying a procedure inspired by KAM theory, we block-diagonalize such matrix into a pair of $2 \times 2 $ Hamiltonian and reversible matrices, thus obtaining the full description of its eigenvalues.

We explore constraints on dark energy and modified gravity with forecast 21cm intensity map** measurements using the Effective Field Theory approach. We construct a realistic mock data set forecasting a low redshift 21cm signal power spectrum $P_{21}(z,k)$ measurement from the MeerKAT radio-telescope. We compute constraints on cosmological and model parameters through Monte Carlo Markov chain techniques, testing both the constraining power of $P_{21}(k)$ alone and its effect when combined with the latest Planck 2018 CMB data. We complement our analysis by testing the effects of tomography from an ideal mock data set of observations in multiple redshift bins. We conduct our analysis numerically with the codes EFTCAMB/EFTCosmoMC, which we extend by implementing a likelihood module fully integrated with original codes. We find that adding $P_{21}(k)$ to CMB data provides significantly tighter constraints on $Ω_ch^2$ and $H_0$, with a reduction of the error with respect to Planck results at the level of more than $60\%$. For the parameters describing beyond $Λ$CDM theories, we observe a reduction in the error with respect to the Planck constraints at the level of $\lesssim 10\%$. The improvement increases up to $\sim 35\%$ when we constrain the parameters using ideal, tomographic mock observations. We conclude that the power spectrum of the 21cm signal is sensitive to variations of the parameters describing the examined beyond $Λ$CDM models and, thus, $P_{21}(k)$ observations could help to constrain dark energy. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we construct traveling nonlinear waves which pass through each other slightly deforming and retaining forever a quasiperiodic structure. These solutions exist for any fixed value of depth and gravity and restricting the vorticity parameter to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.

We present new measurements of the clustering of stellar mass-complete samples of $\sim40,000$ SDSS galaxies at $z\sim0.03$ as a joint function of stellar mass and specific star formation rate (sSFR). Our results confirm what Coil et al. (2017) find at $z\sim0.7$: galaxy clustering is a stronger function of sSFR at fixed stellar mass than of stellar mass at fixed sSFR. We also find that galaxies above the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) with higher sSFR are less clustered than galaxies below the SFMS with lower sSFR, at a given stellar mass. A similar trend is present for quiescent galaxies. This confirms that main sequence scatter, and scatter within the quiescent sequence, is physically connected to the large-scale cosmic density field. We compare the resulting galaxy bias versus sSFR, and relative bias versus sSFR ratio, for different galaxy samples across ${0<z<1.2}$ to mock galaxy catalogs based on the empirical galaxy evolution model of Behroozi et al. (2019). This model fits PRIMUS and DEEP2 clustering data well at intermediate redshift, but agreement with SDSS is not as strong. We show that increasing the correlation between galaxy SFR and halo accretion rate at $z\sim0$ in the model substantially improves agreement with SDSS data. Mock catalogs suggest that central galaxies contribute substantially to the dependence of clustering on sSFR at a given stellar mass and that the signal is not simply an effect of satellite galaxy fraction differences with sSFR. Our results are highly constraining for galaxy evolution models and show that the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) depends on sSFR.

We prove a rigorous reduction of this system to Birkhoff normal form up to cubic degree. Due to the possible presence of 3-waves resonances for general values of gravity, surface tension and depth, such normal form may be not trivial and exhibit a chaotic dynamics (Wilton-ripples). Nevertheless we prove that for all the values of gravity, surface tension and depth, initial data that are of size $ε$ in a sufficiently smooth Sobolev space lead to a solution that remains in an $ε$-ball of the same Sobolev space up to times of order $ε^{-2}$. We exploit that the $3$-waves resonances are finitely many, and the Hamiltonian nature of the Birkhoff normal form.

Previous work has demonstrated that at a given stellar mass, quiescent galaxies are more strongly clustered than star-forming galaxies. The contribution to this signal from central, as opposed to satellite, galaxies is not known, which has strong implications for galaxy evolution models. To investigate the contribution from central galaxies, here we present measurements of the clustering of isolated primary (IP) galaxies, used as a proxy for central galaxies, at ${0.2<z<0.9}$ with data from the PRIMUS galaxy redshift survey. Using a sample of spectroscopic redshifts for $\sim60,000$ galaxies with ${M_*\gtrsim10^9~M_\odot}$ covering 5 deg$^2$ on the sky, we define IP galaxies using isolation cuts in spatial proximity and stellar mass of nearby galaxies. We find that at fixed stellar mass, quiescent IP galaxies are more strongly clustered than star-forming IP galaxies at $z\sim0.35$ $(10σ)$. Using mock galaxy catalogs based on recent halo occupation models of Behroozi et al. (2018) and designed to replicate the parameters of the PRIMUS survey dataset, we find that these clustering differences are due in part to quiescent central galaxies being more strongly clustered than star-forming central galaxies. This is consistent with either distinct stellar-to-halo mass relations for quiescent and star-forming central galaxies, and/or central galaxy assembly bias. We additionally use mock catalogs to assess the dependence of both incompleteness and satellite galaxy contamination in the IP galaxy samples on redshift, galaxy type, and stellar mass, and demonstrate how isolation criteria yield biased subsamples of central galaxies via {\it environmental incompleteness}, or the preferential exclusion of central galaxies in overdense environments.

We consider a class of linear time dependent Schrödinger equations and quasi-periodically forced nonlinear Hamiltonian wave/Klein Gordon and Schrödinger equations on arbitrary flat tori. For the linear Schrödinger equation, we prove a $t^ε$ $(\forall ε>0)$ upper bound for the growth of the Sobolev norms as the time goes to infinity. For the nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs we construct families of time quasi-periodic solutions. Both results are based on "clusterization properties" of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a flat torus and on suitable "separation properties" of the singular sites of Schrödinger and wave operators, which are integers, in space-time Fourier lattice, close to a cone or a paraboloid. Thanks to these properties we are able to apply Delort abstract theorem [Del10] to control the speed of growth of the Sobolev norms, and Berti-Corsi-Procesi abstract Nash-Moser theorem [BCP15] to construct quasi-periodic solutions.

We consider the gravity water waves system with a periodic one-dimensional interface in infinite depth, and prove a rigorous reduction of these equations to Birkhoff normal form up to degree four. This proves a conjecture of Zakharov-Dyachenko [55] suggested by the formal Birkhoff integrability of the water waves Hamiltonian truncated at order four. As a consequence, we also obtain a long-time stability result: periodic perturbations of a flat interface that are of size $\varepsilon$ in a sufficiently smooth Sobolev space lead to solutions that remain regular and small up to times of order $\varepsilon^{-3}$. This time scale is expected to be optimal. Main difficulties in the proof are the presence of non-trivial resonant four-waves interactions, the so-called Benjamin-Feir resonances, the small divisors arising from near-resonances and the quasilinear nature of the equations. Some of the main ingredients that we use are: (1) a reduction procedure to constant coefficient operators up to smoothing remainders, that, together with the verification of key algebraic cancellations of the system, implies the integrability of the equations at non-negative orders; (2) a Poincaré-Birkhoff normal form of the smoothing remainders that deals with near-resonances; (3) an a priori algebraic identification argument of the above Poincaré- Birkhoff normal form equations with the formal Hamiltonian computations of [55, 19, 27, 17], that allows us to handle the Benjamin-Feir resonances.

We prove the existence and the linear stability of Cantor families of small amplitude time quasi-periodic standing water wave solutions - namely periodic and even in the space variable x - of a bi-dimensional ocean with finite depth under the action of pure gravity. Such a result holds for all the values of the depth parameter in a Borel set of asymptotically full measure. This is a small divisor problem. The main difficulties are the quasi-linear nature of the gravity water waves equations and the fact that the linear frequencies grow just in a sublinear way at infinity. We overcome these problems by first reducing the linearized operators obtained at each approximate quasi-periodic solution along the Nash-Moser iteration to constant coefficients up to smoothing operators, using pseudo-differential changes of variables that are quasi-periodic in time. Then we apply a KAM reducibility scheme which requires very weak Melnikov non-resonance conditions (losing derivatives both in time and space), which we are able to verify for most values of the depth parameter using degenerate KAM theory arguments.

The goal of this monograph is to prove that any solution of the Cauchy problem for the capillarity-gravity water waves equations, in one space dimension, with periodic, even in space, initial data of small size $ε$, is almost globally defined in time on Sobolev spaces, i.e. it exists on a time interval of length of magnitude $ε^{-N}$ for any $N$, as soon as the initial data are smooth enough, and the gravity-capillarity parameters are taken outside an exceptional subset of zero measure. In contrast to the many results known for these equations on the real line, with decaying Cauchy data, one cannot make use of dispersive properties of the linear flow. Instead, our method is based on a normal forms procedure, in order to eliminate those contributions to the Sobolev energy that are of lower degree of homogeneity in the solution. Since the water waves equations are a quasi-linear system, usual normal forms approaches would face the well known problem of losses of derivatives in the unbounded transformations. In this monograph, to overcome such a difficulty, after a paralinearization of the capillarity-gravity water waves equations, necessary to obtain energy estimates, and thus local existence of the solutions, we first perform several paradifferential reductions of the equations to obtain a diagonal system with constant coefficients symbols, up to smoothing remainders. Then we may start with a normal form procedure where the small divisors are compensated by the previous paradifferential regularization. The reversible structure of the water waves equations, and the fact that we look for solutions even in $x$, guarantees a key cancellation which prevents the growth of the Sobolev norms of the solutions.

We test for galactic conformity at $0.2<z<1.0$ to a projected distance of 5 Mpc using spectroscopic redshifts from the PRism MUlti-object Survey (PRIMUS). Our sample consists of $\sim60,000$ galaxies in five separate fields covering a total of $\sim5.5$ square degrees, which allows us to account for cosmic variance. We identify star-forming and quiescent "isolated primary" (i.e., central) galaxies using isolation criteria and cuts in specific star formation rate. We match the redshift and stellar mass distributions of these samples, to control for correlations between quiescent fraction and redshift and stellar mass. We detect a significant $(>3σ)$ one-halo conformity signal, or an excess of star-forming neighbors around star-forming central galaxies, of $\sim5$% on scales of 0-1 Mpc and a $2.5σ$ two-halo signal of $\sim1$% on scales of 1-3 Mpc. These signals are weaker than those detected in SDSS and are consistent with galactic conformity being the result of large-scale tidal fields and reflecting assembly bias. We also measure the star-forming fraction of central galaxies at fixed stellar mass as a function of large-scale environment and find that central galaxies are more likely to be quenched in overdense environments, independent of stellar mass. However, we find that environment does not affect the star formation efficiency of central galaxies, as long as they are forming stars. We test for redshift and stellar mass dependence of the conformity signal within our sample and show that large volumes and multiple fields are required at intermediate redshift to adequately account for cosmic variance.

We prove that small, semi-linear Hamiltonian perturbations of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (dNLS) equation on the circle have an abundance of invariant tori of any size and (finite) dimension which support quasi-periodic solutions. When compared with previous results the novelty consists in considering perturbations which do not satisfy any symmetry condition (they may depend on $x$ in an arbitrary way) and need not be analytic. The main difficulty is posed by pairs of almost resonant dNLS frequencies. The proof is based on the integrability of the dNLS equation, in particular the fact that the nonlinear part of the Birkhoff coordinates is one smoothing. We implement a Newton-Nash-Moser iteration scheme to construct the invariant tori. The key point is the reduction of linearized operators, coming up in the iteration scheme, to $ 2 \times 2 $ block diagonal ones with constant coefficients together with sharp asymptotic estimates of their eigenvalues.

The tame estimates required for the inverse linearised operators at each step of the iterative scheme are deduced via a multiscale inductive argument. The Cantor like set of parameters where the solution exists is defined in a non inductive way. This formulation completely decouples the iterative scheme from the measure theoretical analysis of the parameters where the small divisors non-resonance conditions are verified. As an application, we deduce the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for forced NLW and NLS equations on any compact Lie group or manifold which is homogeneous with respect to a compact Lie group, extending previous results valid only for tori. Abstract:
We prove existence and multiplicity of small amplitude periodic solutions of the completely resonant wave equation u_tt - u_xx + f(x,u)=0 with Dirichlet boundary conditions where f(x,u)=a_2 u^2 + a_3(x) u^3 + O(u^4) or f(x,u)= a_4 u^4 + O(u^5) for a Cantor-like set of frequencies omega of asymptotically full measure at omega=1.

Authors:

Abstract:
We prove existence of quasi-periodic solutions with two frequencies of completely resonant, periodically forced nonlinear wave equations with periodic spatial boundary conditions. We consider both the cases the forcing frequency is: (Case A) a rational number and (Case B) an irrational number.

Abstract:
We prove existence and regularity of periodic in time solutions of completely resonant nonlinear forced wave equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions for a large class of non-monotone forcing terms. Our approach is based on a variational Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. It turns out that the infinite dimensional bifurcation equation exhibits an intrinsic lack of compactness. We solve it via a min…

Our approach is based on a variational Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. It turns out that the infinite dimensional bifurcation equation exhibits an intrinsic lack of compactness. We solve it via a minimization argument and a-priori estimate methods inspired to regularity theory of Rabinowitz

We prove existence of small amplitude, $2π\slash \om$-periodic in time solutions of completely resonant nonlinear wave equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions, for any frequency $ \om $ belonging to a Cantor-like set of positive measure and for a new set of nonlinearities. The proof relies on a suitable Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition and a variant of the Nash-Moser Implicit Function Theorem. In spite of the complete resonance of the equation we show that we can still reduce the problem to a {\it finite} dimensional bifurcation equation. Moreover, a new simple approach for the inversion of the linearized operators required by the Nash-Moser scheme is developed. It allows to deal also with nonlinearities which are not odd and with finite spatial regularity.

In this paper we give an extension of the Birkhoff--Lewis theorem to some semilinear PDEs. Such periodic orbits bifurcate from resonant finite dimensional invariant tori of the fourth order normal form of the system. Besides standard nonresonance and nondegeneracy assumptions, our main…

In this paper we give an extension of the Birkhoff--Lewis theorem to some semilinear PDEs. Accordingly we prove existence of infinitely many periodic orbits with large period accumulating at the origin. Such periodic orbits bifurcate from resonant finite dimensional invariant tori of the fourth order normal form of the system. Besides standard nonresonance and nondegeneracy assumptions, our main result is obtained assuming a regularizing property of the nonlinearity. We apply our main theorem to a semilinear beam equation and to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with smoothing nonlinearity.

We prove, under suitable non-resonance and non-degeneracy ``twist'' conditions, a Birkhoff-Lewis type result showing the existence of infinitely many periodic solutions, with larger and larger minimal period, accumulating onto elliptic invariant tori (of Hamiltonian systems). We prove the applicability of this result to the spatial planetary three-body problem in the small eccentricity-inclination regime. Furthermore, we find other periodic orbits under some restrictions on the period and the masses of the ``planets''. The proofs are based on averaging theory, KAM theory and variational methods.
