We report a resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) study of antiferromagnetic neptunium compounds NpCoGa_5 and NpRhGa_5 at the Np M_4 and Ga K-edges. Large resonant signals of magnetic dipole character are observed below the Neel temperatures at both edges. The signals at the Np edges confirm the behaviour determined previously from neutron diffraction, i.e. the moments along [001] in NpCoGa_{5} and in NpRhGa_5 a reorientation of the moments from the c-axis direction to the ab plane. In the latter material, on application of magnetic field of 9 Tesla along the [010] direction we observe a change in the population of different [110]-type domains. We observe also a magnetic dipole signal at the Ga K-edge, similarly to the reported UGa_3 case, that can be interpreted within a semi-localized model as an orbital polarization of the Ga 4p states induced via strong hybridization with the Np 5f valence band. Quantitative analysis of the signal shows that the Ga dipole on the two different Ga sites follows closely the Np magnetic moment reorientation in NpRhGa_5. The ratios of the signals on the two inequivalent Ga sites are not the same for the different compounds.

We observed the field-induced antiferromagnetic dipole moment with the propagation vector {\textit{\textbf{q}}} = (1 0 0) for the applied field direction both {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0] and [0 0 1]. For {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0] at 8 T, it should be noted that the induced antiferromagnetic moment of 0.16(10) $μ_{\rm B}$/Pr orients parallel to the field within our experimental accuracy. This observation is strong evidence that the $O_{xy}$ electric quadrupole to be the primary order parameter for {\textit{\textbf{H}}}${\parallel}$[1 1 0]. A mean-field calculation, based on $Γ_1$ singlet and $Γ_4^{(2)}$ excited triplet with the $O_{xy}$ quadrupolar interaction, reproduces the induced moment direction and its field response. These facts indicate the predominance of $O_{xy}$-type antiferroquadrupolar interaction in PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$.

Magnetic diffraction patterns which exhibit more than one discrete set of symmetry related peaks have been explained by the simultaneous coexistence of more than one magnetic polarisation and propagation vector, k, in the scattering amplitude. In this work we suggest using such multi-k magnetic structures as prototypical multiple order parameter systems. The examples studied are uranium rocksalts, which exhibit magnetic diffraction patterns, the indexing of which requires three orthogonal propagation wavevectors. In the cubic phase these systems exhibit, in addition to the three sets of symmetry related magnetic diffraction peaks, a set of additional Bragg peaks which have been observed by both neutron and x-ray resonant scattering. An interpretation of the neutron diffraction form factor of these peaks is presented, identifying these peaks as signatures of quantum coherence between the three orthogonal order parameters.

Low temperature ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of the coexistent antiferromagnetic superconductor YbPd2Sn have been made in hydrostatic pressures < 74 kbar in moissanite anvil cells. The superconducting transition temperature is forced to T(SC) = 0 K at a pressure of 58 kbar. The initial suppression of the superconducting transition temperature is corroborated by lower hydrostatic pressure (p < 16 kbar) four point resisitivity measurements, made in a piston cylinder pressure cell. At ambient pressure, in a modest magnetic field of ~ 500 G, this compound displays reentrant superconducting behaviour. This reentrant superconductivity is suppressed to lower temperature and lower magnetic field as pressure is increased. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, which was measured at T(N) = 0.12 K at ambient pressure is enhanced, to reach T(N) = 0.58 K at p = 74 kbar. The reasons for the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism is discussed in the light of these and previous findings. Also considered is why superconductivity on the border of long range magnetic order is so much rarer in Yb compounds than in Ce compounds. The presence of a new transition visible by ac magnetic susceptibility under pressure and in magnetic fields greater than 1.5 kG is suggested.

We show that the superconductivity observed recently in the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 [C. Pfleiderer et al., Nature (London) 412, 58 (2001)] is due to remnants of a superconducting layer induced by spark erosion. Results of resistivity, susceptibility, specific heat and surface analysis measurements on high-quality ZrZn2 crystals show that cutting by spark erosion leaves a superconducting surface layer. The resistive superconducting transition is destroyed by chemically etching a layer of 5 microns from the sample. No signature of superconductivity is observed in rho(T) of etched samples at the lowest current density measured, J=675 Am-2, and at T < 45 mK. EDX analysis shows that spark-eroded surfaces are strongly Zn depleted. The simplest explanation of our results is that the superconductivity results from an alloy with higher Zr content than ZrZn2.

We present the first study of a magnetic quantum phase transition in the itinerant-electron ferromagnet Ni3Al at high pressures. Electrical resistivity measurements in a diamond anvil cell at hydrostatic pressures up to 100 kbar and temperatures as low as 50 mK indicate that the Curie temperature collapses towards absolute zero at a critical pressure pc=82(2) kbar. Over wide ranges in pressure and temperature, both in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, the temperature variation of the resistivity is found to deviate from the conventional Fermi-liquid form. We consider the extent to which this deviation can be understood in terms of a mean-field model of enhanced spin fluctuations on the border of ferromagnetism in three dimensions.

This paper, I, presents new results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The focus is on the experimental position whilst the sequel, II, advances theoretical perspectives. We present a detailed and complete characterisation of the wavevector- and energy-dependent magnetisation dynamics in UPd2Al3 as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been previously published by two independent groups. In this way we emphasize the commonality and robust nature of the data which indicate the intricate nature of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of this material. Our results yield unique insight into the low temperature ground state which exhibits a microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity making UPd2Al3 one of the most accessible heavy-fermion superconductors that can be fully characterised by neutron spectroscopy.

Earlier neutron diffraction and Mössbauer studies had shown the presence of long-range AF order below T$_{N}$ = 19 K, with sizeable magnetic moment both on the U and the Np ions. RXS results confirm the presence of an ordered dipole magnetic moment on the Np ions, but also reveal the presence of an anti-ferro arrangement of the electric quadrupole moments on both U and Np ions, with the same propagation vector that defines the magnetic structure. From the azimuthal dependence of the intensities we are able to determine the exact configuration of the quadrupolar ordering. The intensities of Bragg peaks associated with magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole order have different temperature dependences. On cooling below T$_{N}$, the magnetic dipole order develops faster on the uranium ions, with magnetic order on the Np ions increasing at a lower rate. At the same temperature, quadrupolar order on both the U and Np ions occurs along with an internal Jahn-Teller lattice distortion.

Using resonant x-ray scattering to perform diffraction experiments at the U M$_{4}$ edge novel reflections of the generic form $<kkk>$ have been observed in UAs$_{0.8}$Se$_{0.2}$ where $\vec{k} = < k00>$, with $k = {1/2}$ reciprocal lattice units, is the wave vector of the primary (magnetic) order parameter. The $<kkk>$ reflections, with $10^{-4}$ of the $<k00>$ magnetic intensities, cannot be explained on the basis of the primary order parameter within standard scattering theory. A full experimental characterisation of these reflections is presented including their energy, azimuthal and temperature dependencies. On this basis we establish that the reflections most likely arise from the electric dipole operator involving transitions between the core 3d and partially filled $5f$ states. The temperature dependence couples the $<kkk>$ peak to the triple-$\vec{k}$ region of the phase diagram: Below $\sim 50$ K, where previous studies have suggested a transition to a double-$\vec{k}$ state, the intensity of the $<kkk>$ is dramatically reduced. Whilst we are unable to give a definite explanation of how these novel reflections appear, this paper concludes with a discussion of possible ideas for these reflections in terms of the coherent superposition of the 3 primary (magnetic) order parameters.

Both $μ$SR and neutron data indicate a slowing-down of the spin-fluctuations, upon lowering the temperature, similar to that observed in Kondo lattices. The temperature dependence of the quasi-elastic neutron signal is compatible with a crystal-electric field scheme having a $Γ_7^{\rm CEF}$ ground state. The muon depolarization rate exhibits an additional contribution upon decreasing the temperature below $T_{\rm c}$ suggesting a close interplay between magnetic fluctuations and the superconducting state.

We report the results of resonant X-ray scattering experiments performed at the Np M_4,5 edges in NpO_2. Below T_0 = 25 K, the development of long-range order of Np electric quadrupoles is revealed by the growth of superlattice Bragg peaks. The electronic transition is not accompanied by any measurable crystallographic distortion, either internal or external, so the symmetry of the system remains cubic. The polarization and azimuthal dependence of the intensity of the resonant peaks is well reproduced assuming Templeton scattering from a triple-q longitudinal antiferroquadrupolar structure. Electric quadrupole order in NpO_2 could be driven by the ordering at T_0 of magnetic octupoles of Gamma_5 symmetry, splitting the Np ground state quartet and leading to a singlet ground state with zero dipole magnetic moment.
