An incommensurate elliptical helical magnetic structure in the frustrated coupled-spin-chain system FeTe2O5Br is surprisingly found to persist down to 53(3) mK (T/T_N ~ 1/200), according to neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. In this state, finite spin fluctuations at T -> 0 are evidenced by muon depolarization, which is in agreement with specific-heat data indicating the presence of both gapless and gapped excitations. We thus show that the amplitude-modulated magnetic order intrinsically accommodates contradictory persistent spin dynamics and long-range order and can serve as a model structure to investigate their coexistence.

We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in single crystals of the Rashba spin-splitting compound BiTeI, from both longitudinal ($R_{xx}(B)$) and Hall ($R_{xy}(B)$) magnetoresistance. We present the investigation of a monoclinic compound SeCuO3 using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, torque and electron-spin-resonance (ESR). Structurally based analysis suggests that SeCuO3 can be considered as a 3D network of tetramers. The values of intra-tetramer exchange interactions are extracted from the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and amount to ~200 K. The inter-tetramer coupling leads to the development of long-range antiferromagnetic order at TN = 8 K. An unusual temperature dependence of the effective g-tensors is observed, accompanied with a rotation of macroscopic magnetic axes. We explain this unique observation as due to site-selective quantum correlations.

We present interferometric diameter measurements of 21 K- and M- dwarfs made with the CHARA Array. This sample is enhanced by literature radii measurements to form a data set of 33 K-M dwarfs with diameters measured to better than 5%. For all 33 stars, we compute absolute luminosities, linear radii, and effective temperatures (Teff). We develop empirical relations for \simK0 to M4 main- sequence stars between the stellar Teff, radius, and luminosity to broad-band color indices and metallicity. These relations are valid for metallicities between [Fe/H] = -0.5 and +0.1 dex, and are accurate to ~2%, ~5%, and ~4% for Teff, radius, and luminosity, respectively. Our results show that it is necessary to use metallicity dependent transformations to convert colors into stellar Teffs, radii, and luminosities. We find no sensitivity to metallicity on relations between global stellar properties, e.g., Teff-radius and Teff-luminosity. Robust examinations of single star Teffs and radii compared to evolutionary model predictions on the luminosity-Teff and luminosity-radius planes reveals that models overestimate the Teffs of stars with Teff < 5000 K by ~3%, and underestimate the radii of stars with radii < 0.7 R\odot by ~5%. These conclusions additionally suggest that the models overestimate the effects that the stellar metallicity may have on the astrophysical properties of an object. By comparing the interferometrically measured radii for single stars to those of eclipsing binaries, we find that single and binary star radii are consistent. However, the literature Teffs for binary stars are systematically lower compared to Teffs of single stars by ~ 200 to 300 K. Lastly, we present a empirically determined HR diagram for a total of 74 nearby, main-sequence, A- to M-type stars, and define regions of habitability for the potential existence of sub-stellar mass companions in each system. In an experimental geometry with the E-field parallel to the [111] axis, and the magnetic field parallel to the [1-10] axis, we demonstrate that the effect of applying an E-field is to controllably rotate the skyrmion lattice around the magnetic field axis. Our results are an important first demonstration for a microscopic coupling between applied E-fields and the skyrmions in an insulator, and show that the general emergent properties of skyrmions may be tailored according to the properties of the host system.

The complex dielectric function and optical properties along all three principal axes of the orthorhombic cell were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lorentz model. Below 115 K, 16 additional modes (8(E$\parallel\hat{a}$)+6(E$\parallel\hat{b}$)+2(E$\parallel\hat{c}$)) appear in the phonon spectra; however, powder x-ray diffraction measurements do not detect a new structure at 85 K. Potential explanations for the new phonon modes are discussed. Transmission in the far infrared as a function of temperature has revealed magnetic excitations originating below the magnetic ordering temperature ($T_{c}\sim$24 K). The origin of the excitations in the magnetically ordered state will be discussed in terms of their response to different polarizations of incident light, behavior in externally-applied magnetic fields, and the anisotropic magnetic properties of Cu$_{3}$Bi(SeO$_{3}$)$_{2}$O$_{2}$Cl as determined by d.c. susceptibility measurements.

We report a detailed single crystal investigation of a magnetoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3 using dc magnetization and ac susceptibility along the three principal directions [100], [110] and [111]. We have observed that in small magnetic fields two magnetic transitions occur, one at Tc = 57 K and the second one at TN = 58 K. At Tc the non-linear susceptibility reveals the emergence of the ferromagnetic component and below Tc the magnetization measurements show the splitting between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled regimes. Above 1000 Oe the magnetization saturates and the system is in a single domain state. The temperature dependence of the saturation below Tc can be well described by m(T) = m(0)[1 - (T/Tc)^2]^β, with m(0) = 0.56 (mu)B/Cu, corresponding to the 3-up-1-down configuration. The dielectric constant measured on a thin single crystal shows a systematic deviation below the transition, indicating an intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in bulk and surface states of the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases it intersects spin-polarized bands, in the corresponding surface depletion and accumulation layers. The momentum splitting of these bands is not affected by adsorbate-induced changes in the surface potential. These findings demonstrate that two properties crucial for enabling semiconductor-based spin electronics -- a large, robust spin splitting and ambipolar conduction -- are present in this material.

Electronic structure of crystalline materials is their fundamental characteristic which is the basis of almost all their physical and chemical properties. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is the main experimental tool to study all electronic structure aspects with resolution in k-space. However, its application to three-dimensional (3D) materials suffers from a fundamental problem of ill-defined surface-perpendicular wavevector kz. Here, we achieve sharp definition of kz to enable precise navigation in 3D k space by pushing ARPES into the soft-X-ray photon energy range. Essential to break through the notorious problem of small photoexcitation cross-section was an advanced photon flux performance of our instrumentation. We explore the electronic structure of a transition metal dichalcogenide VSe2 which develops charge density waves (CDWs) possessing exotic 3D character. We experimentally identify nesting of its 3D Fermi surface (FS) as the precursor for these CDWs. Our study demonstrates an immense potential of soft-X-ray ARPES (SX-ARPES) to resolve various aspects of 3D electronic structure.

We present magnetodielectric measurements in single crystals of the cubic spin-1/2 compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. A magnetic field-induced electric polarization ($\vec{P}$) and a finite magnetocapacitance (MC) is observed at the onset of the magnetically ordered state ($T_c = 59$ K). Both $\vec{P}$ and MC are explored in considerable detail as a function of temperature (T), applied field $\vec{H}_a$, and relative field orientations with respect to the crystallographic axes. The magnetodielectric data show a number of anomalies which signal magnetic phase transitions, and allow to map out the phase diagram of the system in the $H_a$-T plane. Below the 3up-1down collinear ferrimagnetic phase, we find two additional magnetic phases. We demonstrate that these are related to the field-driven evolution of a long-period helical phase, which is stabilized by the chiral Dzyalozinskii-Moriya term $D \vec{M} \cdot(\bs{\nabla}\times\vec{M})$ that is present in this non-centrosymmetric compound. We also present a phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg theory for the ME$_H$ effect, which is in excellent agreement with experimental data, and shows three novel features: (i) the polarization $\vec{P}$ has a uniform as well as a long-wavelength spatial component that is given by the pitch of the magnetic helices, (ii) the uniform component of $\vec{P}$ points along the vector $(H^yH^z, H^zH^x, H^xH^y)$, and (iii) its strength is proportional to $η_\parallel^2-η_\perp^2/2$, where $η_\parallel$ is the longitudinal and $η_\perp$ is the transverse (and spiraling) component of the magnetic ordering. Hence, the field dependence of P provides a clear signature of the evolution of a conical helix under a magnetic field. A similar phenomenological theory is discussed for the MC.

The temperature dependence of the specific heat of Cu2OSeO3 is characteristic of nearly critical spin fluctuations at the helimagnetic transition. This provides putative evidence for effective spin currents as the origin of enhancements of the magneto-dielectric response instead of atomic displacements considered so far.

The difference between signals with the polarization \textbf{E}$\perp$\textbf{c} and \textbf{E}$\parallel$\textbf{c} (linear dichroism) changes with temperature. Besides increasing intensity of one of the maxima, a new structure appears in the pre-edge region below the metal-insulator transition. More careful examination brings to light that the changes start already with pretransitional charge density wave fluctuations. Simple symmetry analysis suggests that the effect is related to rearrangements in $E_{g}$ and $A_{1g}$ states, and is compatible with the formation of four inequivalent V sites along the V-S chain.

By measuring the THz electron spin resonance (ESR) transmission spectra and high-field magnetization on the spin-gapped system CuTe$_2$O$_5$, we identified the singlet-triplet excitations in the dimerized non-magnetic ground state. The determined spin-gap value of $hν_0=4.94$ meV at the $Γ$ point ($\mathbf{Q}\simeq\mathbf{0}$) is significantly smaller than the strongest antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Cu ions predicted by theoretical investigations. We also observed the critical field $H_{c1}^{a^*}=37.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\bot$ \emph{bc}-plane and $H_{c1}^{bc}=40.6$ T for \textbf{H} $\|$ \emph{bc}-plane at the onset of non-zero magnetization, consistent with the gap value and corresponding anisotropic \emph{g}-factors determined previously. The observed singlet-triplet excitations in Faraday and Voigt configurations suggest a mixing of the singlet state with the $S_z=0$ triplet state and the $S_z=\pm 1$ triplet states, respectively, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction with a DM vector perpendicular to the crystalline \emph{bc}-plane.

The spin-web compound Cu3TeO6, belongs to an intriguing group of materials where magnetism is governed by 3d9 copper Cu2+ ions. This compound has been sparsely experimentally studied and we here present the first investigation of its local magnetic properties using muon-spin relaxation/rotation (μ+SR). Our results show a clear long-range 3D magnetic order below TN as indicated by clear zero-field (ZF) muon-precessions. At TN = 61.7 K a very sharp transition is observed in the weak transverse-field (wTF) as well as ZF data. Contrary to suggestions by susceptibility measurements and inelastic neutron scattering, we find no evidence for either static or dynamic (on the time-scale of μ+SR) spin-correlations above TN.

We present specific-heat data on the type-II superconductors V3Si, LuNi2B2C and NbSe2 which were acquired with a low-temperature thermal analysis (DTA) technique. We compare our data with available literature data on these superconductors. In the first part we show that the DTA technique allows for fast measurements while providing a very high resolution on the temperature scale. Sharp features in the specific heat such as at the one at the transition to superconductivity are resolved virtually without instrumental broadening. In the second part we investigate the magnetic-field dependence of the specific heats of V3Si and LuNi2B2C at a fixed temperature T=7.5K to demonstrate that DTA techniques also allow for sufficiently precise measurements of absolute values of cp even in the absence of a sharp phase transition. The corresponding data for V3Si and LuNi2B2C are briefly discussed.

In a wide temperature range above the Néel temperature $T_N=17$ K we observe strong and anisotropic frequency dependence of a resonance linewidth. Although sizeable interchain interaction $J_{IC}\approx 0.1 J$ ($J$ is the intrachain interaction) is present in this system, the ESR results agree well with the Oshikawa-Affleck theory for one-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet. This theory is used to extract the anisotropies present in CuSe$_2$O$_5$. We find that the symmetric anisotropic exchange $J_c=(0.04 \pm 0.01) \:J$ and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction $D=(0.05\pm 0.01)\:J$ are very similar in size in this system. Staggered-field susceptibility induced by the presence of the DM interaction is witnessed in the macroscopic susceptibility anisotropy.

We report high-pressure low-temperature Raman studies of the Verwey transition in pure and Al-doped magnetite (Fe_3O_4). The low temperature phase of magnetite displays a number of additional Raman modes that serve as transition markers. These transition markers allow one to investigate the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the Verwey transition temperature. Al-doped magnetite Fe_2.8Al_0.2O_4 (TV=116.5K) displays a nearly linear decrease of the transition temperature with an increase of pressure yielding dP/dT_V = -0.096 GPa/K. In contrast pure magnetite displays a significantly steeper slope of the PT equilibrium line with dP/dT_V = -0.18 GPa/K. The slope of the PT equilibrium lines is related to the changes of the molar entropy and molar volume at the transition. We compare our spectroscopic data with that obtained from the ambient pressure specific heat measurements and find a good agreement in the optimally doped magnetite. Our data indicates that Al do** leads to a smaller entropy change and larger volume expansion at the transition. Our data displays the trends that are consistent with the mean field model of the transition that assumes charge ordering in magnetite.

For all three compounds the plasmon dispersion is found to be negative for small momentum transfers. This is in contrast to the generic behavior observed in simple metals as well as the related system 2H-NbS2, which does not exhibit charge order. We present a semiclassical Ginzburg-Landau model which accounts for these observations, and argue that the vicinity to a charge ordered state is thus reflected in the properties of the collective excitations.

Magnetic dynamics of a bulk ferromagnet, a new single crystalline compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6, was studied by ac susceptibility and the related techniques. Very large Arrhenius activation energy of 17.2 meV (201 K) and long attempt time (2x10^(-4)s) span the full spectrum of magnetic dynamics inside a convenient frequency window, offering a rare opportunity for general studies of magnetic dynamics. Within the experimental window the ac susceptibility data build almost ideally semicircular Cole-Cole plots. Comprehensive study of experimental dynamic hysteresis loops of the compound is presented and interpreted within a simple thermal-activation-assisted spin lattice relaxation model for spin reversal. Quantitative agreement between the experimental results and the model's prediction for dynamic coercive field is achieved by assuming the central physical quantity, the Debye relaxation rate, to depend on frequency, as well as on the applied field strength and sample temperature. Cross-over between minor- to major hysteresis loops is carefully analyzed. Low-frequency limitations of the model, relying on domain wall pinning effects, are experimentally detected and appropriately discussed.

The former indicates a certain symmetry of a scattering process, which results in strongly kω-dependent contribution to the imaginary part of the self-energy that changes sign while crossing both the dispersion curves and the energy of the Dirac point. The latter is hard to describe by one particle spectral function while a final state interference seems to be plausible explanation.

An internal magnetic field B_int(T=0) = 85.37(25) mT was found, in agreement with a ferrimagnetic state below Tc = 57.0(1) K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic order parameter is well described by the relation B_int = B(0)(1-(T/Tc)^2)^b with an effective exponent b = 0.39(1) which is close to the critical exponent B ~ 1/3 for a three dimensional (3D) magnetic system. Just above Tc the muon relaxation rate follows the power low λ(T)\propto (T/Tc - 1)^ωwith ω= 1.06(9), which is characteristic for 3D ferromagnets. Measurements of B_int(T) with and without an applied electrostatic field E = 1.66 x 10^5 V/m suggest a possible electric field effect of magnitude ΔBv = Bv(0 V)-Bv(500 V) = - 0.4(4) mT.

Multiple charge density wave (CDW) phases in 2H-TaSe2 are investigated by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. In a narrow temperature range immediately above the commensurate CDW transition, we observe a multi-q superstructure with coexisting commensurate and incommensurate order parameters, clearly distinct from the fully incommensurate state at higher temperatures. This multi-q ordered phase, characterized by a temperature hysteresis, is found both during warming and cooling, in contrast to previous reports. In the normal state, the incommensurate superstructure reflection gives way to a broad diffuse peak that persists nearly up to room temperature. Its position provides a direct and accurate estimate of the Fermi surface nesting vector, which evolves non-monotonically and approaches the commensurate position as the temperature is increased. This behavior agrees with our recent observations of the temperature-dependent Fermi surface in the same compound [Phys. Rev. B 79, 125112 (2009)].

This is the first study of the effect of pressure on transition metal dichalcogenides intercalated by atoms that order magnetically. Co$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ is a layered system where the intercalated Co atoms order antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ = 26 K at ambient pressure. We have conducted a detailed study of dc-resistivity ($ρ$), thermoelectric power (S) and thermal conductivity ($κ$). We found that at ambient pressure the magnetic transition corresponds to a well pronounced peak in dS/dT, as well as to a kink in the dc-resistivity. The effect of ordering on the thermal conductivity is rather small but, surprisingly, more pronounced in the lattice contribution than in the electronic contribution to $κ$. Under pressure, the resistivity increases in the high temperature range, contrary to all previous measurements in other layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). In the low temperature range, the strong dependences of thermopower and resistivity on pressure are observed below TN, which, in turn, also depends on pressure at rate of dT$_N$/dp $\approx$ -1 K/kbar. Several possible microscopic explanations of the reduction of the ordering temperature and the evolution of the transport properties with pressure are discussed.

Charge density waves (CDWs) underpin the electronic properties of many complex materials. Near-equilibrium CDW order is linearly coupled to a periodic, atomic-structural distortion, and the dynamics is understood in terms of amplitude and phase modes. However, at the shortest timescales lattice and charge order may become de-coupled, highlighting the electronic nature of this many-body broken symmetry ground state. Using time and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with sub-30-fs XUV pulses, we have mapped the time- and momentum-dependent electronic structure in photo-stimulated 1T-TaS2, a prototypical two-dimensional charge density wave compound. We find that CDW order, observed as a splitting of the uppermost electronic bands at the Brillouin zone boundary, melts well before relaxation of the underlying structural distortion. Decoupled charge and lattice modulations challenge the view of Fermi Surface nesting as a driving force for charge density wave formation in 1T-TaS2.

The dominant spectral features were assigned to $dd$ excitations and we extensively studied their polarization and scattering geometry dependence. In a pure ionic picture, we calculated the theoretical cross sections for those excitations and used them to fit the experimental data with excellent agreement. By doing so, we were able to determine the energy and symmetry of Cu-3$d$ states for the four systems with unprecedented accuracy and confidence. The values of the effective parameters could be obtained for the single ion crystal field model but not for a simple two-dimensional cluster model. The firm experimental assessment of $dd$ excitation energies carries important consequences for the physics of high $T_c$ superconductors. On one hand, having found that the minimum energy of orbital excitation is always $\geq 1.4$ eV, i.e., well above the mid-infrared spectral range, leaves to magnetic excitations (up to 300 meV) a major role in Cooper pairing in cuprates. On the other hand, it has become possible to study quantitatively the effective influence of $dd$ excitations on the superconducting gap in cuprates.

The low-temperature magnetic phase diagram of the multiferroic system FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br down to 300 mK and up to 9 T is presented. Short-range magnetic correlations within the crystal layers start to develop already at $\sim$50 K, i.e., far above $T_{N1} \sim$ 11.0 K, where the system undergoes a magnetic phase transition into the high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM) phase. Only 0.5 K lower, at $T_{N2}$, the system undergoes a second phase transition into the low-temperature incommensurate amplitude-modulated (LT-ICM) phase accompanied by a spontaneous electric polarization. When the magnetic field is applied, the transition temperatures shift depending on the field orientation. In the case of $B||b$ and $B >$ 4.5 T, the HT-ICM phase disappears along with the electric polarization in the LT-ICM phase. The field dependence of the magnetic transition temperatures is explained in the context of the magnetic susceptibility behavior. Similarities and differences between the novel amplitude-modulated and well-established helicoidal magnetoelectrics are discussed.

We present a thorough $^{77}$Se NMR study of a single crystal of the magnetoelectric compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. The temperature dependence of the local electronic moments extracted from the NMR data is fully consistent with a magnetic phase transition from the high-T paramagnetic phase to a low-T ferrimagnetic state with 3/4 of the Cu$^{2+}$ ions aligned parallel and 1/4 aligned antiparallel to the applied field of 14.09 T. The transition to this 3up-1down magnetic state is not accompanied by any splitting of the NMR lines or any abrupt modification in their broadening, hence there is no observable reduction of the crystalline symmetry from its high-T cubic \textit{P}2$_1$3 space group. These results are in agreement with high resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetization data on powder samples reported previously by Bos {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 78}, 094416 (2008)]. We also develop a mean field theory description of the problem based on a microscopic spin Hamiltonian with one antiferromagnetic ($J_\text{afm}\simeq 68$ K) and one ferromagnetic ($J_\text{fm}\simeq -50$ K) nearest-neighbor exchange interaction.

The anharmonic response of charge-density wave (CDW) order to strong laser-pulse perturbations in 1T-TaS_2 and TbTe_3 is investigated by means of a multiple-pump-pulse time-resolved femtosecond optical spectroscopy. We observe remarkable anharmonic effects hitherto undetected in the systems exhibiting collective charge ordering. The efficiency for additional excitation of the amplitude mode by a laser pulse becomes periodically modulated after the mode is strongly excited into a coherently oscillating state. A similar effect is observed also for some other phonons, where the cross-modulation at the amplitude-mode frequency indicates anharmonic interaction of those phonons with the amplitude mode. By analyzing the observed phenomena in the framework of time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we attribute the effects to the anharmonicity of the mode potentials inherent to the broken symmetry state of the CDW systems.

We determine an average cluster reddening of E(B-V)=0.37 +- 0.05 mag and a cluster distance of 741 +- 36 pc. The cluster probably contains some very young stars that may include a reddened M3 III star, IRAS~20161+4035.

Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric effect near the transition temperature ($T_{c}\sim 60$~K). Assignments to strong far infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibiting anomalous behavior around the transition temperature.

Here, we describe optimal imaging conditions for optical detection of ultrathin, two-dimensional dichalcogenide nanocrystals containing single, double and triple layers of MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2. A simple optical model is used to calculate the contrast for nanolayers deposited on wafers with varying thickness of SiO2. The model is extended for imaging using the green channel of a video camera. Using AFM and optical imaging we confirm that single layers of MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2 can be detected on 90nm and 270 nm SiO2 using optical means. By measuring contrast under broad-band green illumination we are also able to distinguish between nanostructures containing single, mono and triple layers of MoS2, WSe2 and NbSe2.

Using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we performed a momentum-resolved study of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr_2CuCl_2O_2. We identify both a single-spin-wave feature and a multi-magnon continuum, and show that the X-ray polarization can be used to distinguish these two contributions in the cross-section. The spin-waves display a large (70 meV) dispersion between the zone-boundary points ($π$,0) and ($π$/2,$π$/2). Employing an extended $t$-$t'$-$t"$-$U$ one-band Hubbard model, we find significant electronic hop** beyond nearest-neighbor Cu ions. We conclude that sizeable extended magnetic interactions are present in \scoc{} and probably important in all undoped cuprates.

Abstract:
Powered by effective parquet nesting a commensurate chiral honeycomb superstructure in a trigonally packed transition metal dichalcogenide TaSe$_2$ results in a Dirac cone anomaly in one-particle excitation spectrum. However, the formation of the well defined Dirac point seems to be hindered by effective scattering on 2D plasmons.

It is found that a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CdCr2S4 is triggered by the electrical field. In magnetic fields, the resistivity of CdCr2S4 responds similarly to that of CMR manganites. Combing previous reports, these findings make CdCr2S4 the unique compound to possess all four properties of the colossal magnetocapacitive (CMC), colossal electrocapacitive (CEC), CER, and CMR. The present results open a new venue for searching new materials to show CMR by tuning electric and magnetic fields.

The data evidence a dramatic renormalization of the conduction band below 100K, whose origin can be explained with the exciton condensate phase model. The renormalization translates into a substantial effective mass reduction of the dominant charge carriers and can be directly related to the low temperature downturn of the resistivity of 1T-TiSe2. This observation is in opposition to the common belief that strong interactions produce heavier quasiparticles through an increased effective mass.

There are three differently coordinated Ni atoms in the unit cell. Two of them form an almost planar honeycomb lattice, while the third one is placed between the layers. Magnetization and specific heat measurements revealed a single magnetic ordering at TN = 52 K. Below TN the susceptibility with the magnetic field parallel to the c-axis drops towards zero while the perpendicular susceptibility remains constant, a characteristic of antiferromagnetic materials. Neutron diffraction confirmed that the system is antiferromagnet below TN with ferromagnetic ab-planes stacked antiferromagnetically along the c-axis. All Ni moments are in the S = 1 spin state and point along the c-axis.

The charge density wave phase transition of 1T-TiSe2 is studied by angle-resolved photoemission over a wide temperature range. An important chemical potential shift which strongly evolves with temperature is evidenced. In the framework of the exciton condensate phase, the detailed temperature dependence of the associated order parameter is extracted. Having a mean-field-like behaviour at low temperature, it exhibits a non-zero value above the transition, interpreted as the signature of strong excitonic fluctuations, reminiscent of the pseudo-gap phase of high temperature superconductors. Integrated intensity around the Fermi level is found to display a trend similar to the measured resistivity and is discussed within the model.

The exotic physics in condensed matter systems, such as high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates, is due to the properties of the elementary excitations and their interactions. The dispersion of the electronic states revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) provides a chance to understand these excitations. Recently, a "high energy anomaly" or "waterfall-like" feature in cuprates' dispersion has been reported and studied theoretically. Most of the current views argue that it is the result of some many-body effect at a specific high energy scale (e.g. ~ 0.3eV), though there are other arguments that this is an artificial effect. Here, we report a systematic ARPES study on the "high energy anomaly" in Bi2212 samples over multiple Brillouin zones and with a large variety of ARPES matrix elements. We find that the incoherent weight of the electron spectral function at high binding energy is intimately linked to the energy of the dispersive coherent weight through an unexpected but simple relationship with no special energy scales. This behavior in concert with strong k-dependent matrix element effects gives rise to the heavily studied "waterfall" behavior.
