Abstract:

In this article, we study a commutative Banach algebra structure on the space $L^1(\mathbb{R}^{2n})\oplus \mathcal{T}^1$, where the $\mathcal{T}^1$ denotes the trace class operators on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. The product of this space is given by the convolutions in quantum harmonic analysis. Towards this goal, we study the closed ideals of this space, and in particular its Gelfand theory. We additionally develop the concept of quantum Segal algebras as an analogue of Segal algebras. We prove that many of the properties of Segal algebras have transfers to quantum Segal algebras. However, it should be noted that in contrast to Segal algebras, quantum Segal algebras are not ideals of the ambient space. We also give examples of different constructions that yield quantum Segal algebras.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) profiling can identify body fluids present in a stain, yielding information on what activities could have taken place at a crime scene. To account for uncertainty in such identifications, recent work has focused on devising statistical models to allow for probabilistic statements on the presence of body fluids. A major hurdle for practical adoption is that evidentiary stains are likely to contain more than one body fluid and current models are ill-suited to analyse such mixtures. Here, we construct a likelihood ratio (LR) system that can handle mixtures, considering the hypotheses H1: the sample contains at least one of the body fluids of interest (and possibly other body fluids); H2: the sample contains none of the body fluids of interest (but possibly other body fluids). Thus, the LR-system outputs an LR-value for any combination of mRNA profile and set of body fluids of interest that are given as input. The calculation is based on an augmented dataset obtained by in silico mixing of real single body fluid mRNA profiles. These digital mixtures are used to construct a probabilistic classification method (a 'multi-label classifier'). The probabilities produced are subsequently used to calculate an LR, via calibration. We test a range of different classification methods from the field of machine learning, ways to preprocess the data and multi-label strategies for their performance on in silico mixed test data. Furthermore, we study their robustness to different assumptions on background levels of the body fluids. We find logistic regression works as well as more flexible classifiers, but shows higher robustness and better explainability. We test the system's performance on lab-generated mixture samples, and discuss practical usage in case work.

We construct a spectral triple on a quantum Heisenberg manifold, which generalizes the results of Chakraborty and Shinha, and associate to it an energy functional on the set of projections, following the approach of Mathai-Rosenberg to non-linear sigma models. The spectral triples that we construct extend the We derive a lower bound for this energy functional that is linked on the topological charge of the projection which depends on the curvature of a compatible connection. A detailed study of this lower bound is given for the Kang projection in quantum Heisenberg manifolds. These results display an intriguing interplay between non-linear sigma models and Yang-Mills theory on quantum Heisenberg manifolds, unlike in the well-studied case of noncommutative tori.

Abstract:
This article has two main objectives. The first one is to show Kuttler-Sigillito's type inequalities involving the mixed Neumann-Dirichlet, mixed Steklov-Dirichlet, and mixed Robin-Dirichlet eigenvalue problems. We will provide examples on e.g. squares and balls for the inequalities presented. Next we will show a Rellich identity for the mixed Neumann-Dirichlet problem. This identity will be used…

On the three ball theorem for solutions of the Helmholtz equation

Abstract:
Let $u_k$ be a solution of the Helmholtz equation with the wave number $k$, $Δu_k+k^2 u_k=0$, on a small ball in either $\mathbb{R}^n$, $\mathbb{S}^n$, or $\mathbb{H}^n$. For a fixed point $p$, we define $M_{u_k}(r)=\max_{d(x,p)\le r}|u_k(x)|.$ The following three ball inequality $M_{u_k}(2r)\le C(k,r,α)M_{u_k}(r)^αM_{u_k}(4r)^{1-α}$ is well known, it holds for some $α\in (0,1)$ and $C(k,r,α)>0$ i…

We show that the constant $C(k,r,α)$ grows exponentially in $k$ (when $r$ is fixed and small). We also compare our result with the increased stability for solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation on Riemannian manifolds.

We examine the affine Wigner distribution from a quantization perspective with an emphasis on the underlying group structure. One of our main results expresses the scalogram as (affine) convolution of affine Wigner distributions. We strive to unite the literature on affine Wigner distributions and we provide the connection to the Mellin transform in a rigorous manner. Moreover, we present an affine ambiguity function and show how this can be used to illuminate properties of the affine Wigner distribution. In contrast with the usual Wigner distribution, we demonstrate that the affine Wigner distribution is never an analytic function. Our approach naturally leads to several applications, one of which is an approximation problem for the affine Wigner distribution. We show that the deviation for a symbol to be an affine Wigner distribution can be expressed purely in terms of intrinsic operator-related properties of the symbol. Finally, we present an affine positivity conjecture regarding the non-negativity of the affine Wigner distribution.

It is known that the $L^{2}$-norms of a harmonic function over spheres satisfies some convexity inequality strongly linked to the Almgren's frequency function. We examine the $L^{2}$-norms of harmonic functions over a wide class of evolving hypersurfaces. More precisely, we consider compact level sets of smooth regular functions and obtain a differential inequality for the $L^{2}$-norms of harmonic functions over these hypersurfaces. To illustrate our result, we consider ellipses with constant eccentricity and growing tori in $\mathbf{R}^3.$ Moreover, we give a new proof of the convexity result for harmonic functions on a Riemannian manifold when integrating over spheres. The inequality we obtain for the case of positively curved Riemannian manifolds with non-constant curvature is slightly better than the one previously known.

Abstract:
For a second order operator on a compact manifold satisfying the strong Hörmander condition, we give a bound for the spectral gap analogous to the Lichnerowicz estimate for the Laplacian of a Riemannian manifold. We consider a wide class of such operators which includes horizontal lifts of the Laplacian on Riemannian submersions with minimal leaves.
